this is. the beginning of. germany's chancellor. angela merkel also resigned as head of her conservative party in december disastrous returns for her governing coalition in two recent regional elections of course. after more than a decade in power also on the program brazil a new president. to celebrate since the night for. the man they call the tropical trouble it's the first time in decades that a right wing populist has taken. the result that leaves the country.

no sign of survivors rescue workers in indonesia locate dead bringing remains of a one hundred eighty nine people on board the crushed flight. welcome to the program germany has announced she will relinquish the leadership of the party and step down as chancellor the next election the move comes after disastrous results for her conservatives in the recent state elections. german politics for more than a decade but has been under siege domestically for some time. early in the morning after the bavarian station elections made one thing very clear germans are fed up with their coalition government. we'll dange anyone here and had their warnings i

must know that this was a dummy show i mean a complex but it was an improper can find on this and the one thing that is very lonely is that things cannot go on the way they are always trying to carry consequences to see if it's ok that is mission vital i'm going to michael has been on the end of sharp criticism she sees mistakes made in berlin as a contributing factor to the losses of his sister party in bavaria. the us and i thought i'm good looking back at the formation of the government in the last twelve months it's clear that people have lost a lot of trust in us but also goes for the union party use the c.u. and the c. as you would expect common ground. and that's why until now we have not been able to be clear about what the grand coalition has achieved doig least mom quanta but it was the social democrats who suffered most on the night losing half of their voters i'm a very of. the party leaders it's increasingly difficult to justify why the s.p.d.

is still propping up the coalition government that's kind of s.m.s. what we do get out of my what must we avoid telling us we don't have control and everything and governments are bad images links are contributed to the fact that issues that were asked to the populace didn't get through it didn't mention the stick that was the wrong place so let us get analysis from the dublin chief political correspondent melinda crane i welcome belinda so effectively to announcements that the chancellor started out as chair of her party and will not fight for the chancellorship of the next election so what do those two announcements mean for her party at this stage first of all for the party it means that it theoretically at least can begin to govern proactively rather than reactively and that. disentangle its fate and its future from the chancellor and begin to look toward the future rather to than toward the past she has become so
4:04 pm
controversial for her decision in the twenty fifteen to admit hundreds of thousands of refugees that it has provoked ceaseless internal party strife particularly with the cd use of area in a sister party the c s u and that strife has simply drowned out other topics other achievements to the point that many germans are thoroughly sick of the bickering and we've seen voters both in bavaria and in hessen saying sending a message saying we want this to stop one of the conservative sorry one of the government how does it affect the government of germany well in many respects in a similar way the government is also riven with divisions it is perceived as extremely self absorbed and here too the idea is that uncle americal removes herself and her controversial decision back in two thousand and fifteen from the

equation and essentially sets in motion a new dynamic that could perhaps allow the government to get back to the business of governing certainly that's what she has in mind she said quote unquote in her announcement today the image this government has been conveying is completely unacceptable and the fact is they're better than their reputation they have actually introduced a number of legislative initiatives with important socio economic consequences but that message has been utterly obscured by all of this bickering and division so her step is a step to get back out in front but whether it changes the dynamic depends on a couple of things first of all who will take over in her place and will we see a more unified christian democratic party emerging from that secondly will there now becomes a quinces from this action in. other parties what's going to happen to the interior minister mr say hope for who sets so much of this conflict in motion all of that very much remains to be determined and the consequences for the government will
4:06 pm
depend in part on that not least of also for the junior coalition partner the social democrats are they going to get their act together or will they remain also riven by divisions let us leave a question hanging in the as we hear from the lady at the center of today's momentous events here is i'm going to my. words through an interpreter. firstly in december at the studio party congress i will not be running again as chair of a cd use secondly this fourth parliamentary term will be my last parliamentary term as chancellor of germany in a national election twenty twenty one i will not be running as a candidate for this you do you again and i will also not be running as a candidate for the lower house upon the bundestag and i'd also like to note i will not be taking on any other political positions either thirdly for the rest of this parliamentary term i'm prepared to continue to serve as chancellor and forth yes
4:07 pm
that means that to a large extent i am turning away from what i've always said which is that i believe that the chair of the party and the chancellorship should go together yes this is a bit of a risk but i believe having weighed things out very carefully it is. a risk that any i ought to take and want to take and if i wanted to run. as chancellor again then i wouldn't have taken this decision. this is all about the votes germany's major party is a losing support in the mind the party is getting stronger the far right is not present in all of germany state parliament so sum up for us the change to german party landscape you know there's been so much focus on the far right and it's correct to watch its rise with a concern but the fact is there's another message that we see coming out of these
4:08 pm
two very very important state elections the big winner is the green party the green party is a party firmly anchored in the democratic spectrum it is a party of liberal democratic values it has a lot of very forward looking policies voters in bavaria voters in hasn't said they like where that party is going. and where it could take their states and presumably germany as well so one thing that we may be seeing in all of this current disorder or in the shifting political landscape is the rise of a party that can become a serious contender on the national level in a potential future coalition possibly with a newly reformed christian democratic party the chancellor's party under new leadership that would be a coalition that many people in this country find very interesting in terms of putting in place a politics that is both oriented to the needs of citizens and voters but
4:09 pm
also possibly with real new wind in terms of how to get the german economy ready for the future whether it's in the area of digitalisation investment energy policy that is truly sustainable all of that could be a strength of such a new party with the greens in place so there's some very good news to be seen here in all of this shift as well as the troubling rise of the far right chief political correspondent linda craig thank you. officials in indonesia say the one hundred eighty nine people on board a plane that crashed into the sea are likely to be dead the lion their domestic flight lost contact with air traffic control ten minutes after taking off from the capital jakarta emergency crews are still looking for the main wreckage but have located a brain and human remains. as darkness fell in indonesia rescuers started the grim task of carrying the bodies of those killed to sure. they
