one team. not gone do w.'s november focus. this is d w news live from berlin and they are being called the most important bin turmel lections in a generation and the most fiercely contested president trump has made his final appeal to voters telling them that tuesday's poll will determine the fate of his agenda. there's only one way to stop the democrat led a solo automatic assault routine you have to vote republican tomorrow.
11:01 am
for the democrats former president obama also says there is more at stake than ever before. to do this country's who is on the phone. with early voting already underway we'll explain why these elections matter not just in the united states but also here in europe also coming up fears grow for the safety of some eighty students and teachers kidnapped by armed separatists in cameroon the hostage takers say they will not be released until their demands are met plus the nazi concentration camp cult was a place of pure heart and as one of this expected guards goes on trial in germany today at camp survivor tells t w why this is so important to keep talking about the past.
11:02 am
i'm sara kelly welcome to the program americans are voting in one of the most crucial midterm elections in decades today the first polls open in roughly an hour president trump is calling the ballot a referendum on his agenda democrats are hoping that a good result for them would force the president to rein in his policies the battle promises to be close. early voting has begun for the u.s. midterm elections and early polling suggests it will be a record year for turnout. and it's all because of this man he's divisive and he's energizing for those that love him and for those that don't this election is won't be being seen as a referendum on the man everyone can't look away from if he doesn't say so himself . i mean who ever even heard of mid term they don't even know what it is i've had
11:03 am
a lot of people say i don't know what big term is but now i'm watching every single minute and i'm going out to vote but the key is you have to go out to vote because in a sense i am on the ticket you got to go out to. republicans our town seeing a booming economy. and accusing democrats of being weak on migration democrats are inviting caravan to have to caravan of illegal aliens to pour into our country overwhelming the school your hospital and your communities. u.s. networks have withdrawn this trump ad about a mexican migrant convicted of murdering two police offices it originally claimed democrats allowed him into the country and c.n.n. called it racist. the democrats' not so secret weapon former president barack obama has been on the campaign trail taking aim at the president's often

abrasive personality. the character this country's on the bell who we are is on the ballot. what kind of. what kind of politics we expect is on the ballot how we conduct ourselves in public life is on the ballot how we treat other people is on the ballot. so there are likely to be swings to both sides across america in deeply conservative texas a surprisingly strong showing for democrats. seeking election to the senate. just a few weeks ago democrats felt fairly sure of recapturing both the senate and the house but poll suggests the race is now wide open here. and with me here in the studio is having break ahead of the transatlantic relations program at the german council on foreign relations welcome good morning. this is being called the most
11:05 am
important midterm election in generations in the united states walk us through what's at stake trying to trump says so himself because he feels that this is a lot about his presidency his style. this is about the framework conditions of his presidency in the future if the democrats win the house of representatives which is plausible and likely they can block all his legislative agenda he cannot bring through anything he wants with health care of the projects that he has he might win them over for infrastructure program but he has to also win over the conservatives for raising the money for it so it's going to be very very difficult for him to do something domestically and he will probably go on raising this internal civil war that that he's using to improve his position and it's interesting that these elections they're getting a lot more attention than usual especially internationally here in europe perhaps
11:06 am
people looking at it's a gauge to see if it might impact foreign relations going forward we actually had the opportunity to gauge some opinions on the streets i'd just like to play those briefly and then get your reaction there after your is getting pretty persuasion just. in the world and i think. i don't have so many hopes i just think. it could be good for the world and for the u.s. if it's close to loose the next time. yes this behavior is kind of scary especially for turkey we don't have very good relations right now so i hope to get that his soon since i think the good thing is that the u.s. has become more. about going to me being that the economy is going down and they need to you know sort of bring back jobs and they're doing it for themselves which is not bad i would say is india was also close economy back before ninety one so we were you know we are everybody has these jobs might get to be good and so it's a pledge to me yet i would say if anything the current u.s.
11:07 am
president donald trump doesn't have any influence on the state of u.s. russian relations his personal relationship towards russia can change anything at all. so some mixed reviews there quite interestingly let's look a little bit more at those international relations because you know trump calls his foreign policy and anti globalist agenda and i'm wondering what concerns you more as somebody who's an expert in this field a possible shift in power perhaps going to the democrats in congress or a continuation of the status quo. it's very hard to forsee what trump makes out of the situation because it could be that the block congress forces him brings him in a position where he sees it necessary to to raise conflicts elsewhere outside of america to to stand up as a strong leader to stand up to somebody who is who is tough on north korea or iran he's already doing that because he promised that in his in his they complain but. i
11:08 am
think if he had strong support with votes for republicans he would go on with his anti globalist agenda he would also be. seen as or he wants to be seen as somebody who's who's who's tough on trade who closes the borders and forces companies to come back in and i think if if he. is left in the face with it with a clear democratic win. he might reconsider that actually he might he might he might he might play to that of the seat necessary to play to the middle ground to the to the people in the center of the electorate for them for the two thousand and twenty elections over his presidency just briefly before we go what do you think that the democrats specifically would bring to the table. i think the they would of course. force him to. open up some of the secrets that surrounding his presidency they would use the gauge of power the subpoena posed to
11:09 am
the house of representatives. with that they might actually look especially into the u.s. russian fears they might. force them to come up with. conflicts of interest and they will demand not necessarily free trade because this is not the democratic agenda but they will be able to mom the foreign policy of the president must be more reliable and full so you will. want to thank you so much having rick as we mentioned head of the transatlantic relations program at the german council on foreign relations with that view of how these midterm elections in the united states could impact foreign policy internationally we appreciate it. and here on d.w. we have extensive coverage of the midterms throughout the day bringing you all the results and various perspectives from around the globe you can follow us for updates on our web site www dot com and also on social media. but in the meantime

let's get a check of some other stories making news around the world u.s. secretary of state might pump aoe has said that the united states of over let's sleep purse to iran this after president trump ordered renewed sanctions on the country washington wants tehran to end its list of missed program and abandon regional conflicts iranian president hassan rouhani says that tehran will defy american demands. in peru a truck crashed head on into a passenger bus on monday local media reporting saying that at least eighteen people are dead among them twelve women and children the bus had been travelling along a highway near lake titicaca. you're watching news still to come on the program the nazis killed more than sixty thousand people and don't hold concentration camps as one of the camp guards goes on trial here in germany we need a woman who has survived its horrors. but first to cameroon where
11:11 am
a separatist gunmen has kidnapped or rather separatist gunmen have kidnapped seventy nine students and three staff members at a school separatist in the anglo phone region are fighting an armed campaign for independence from the majority french speaking country the kidnappers say that the students will only be freed after they achieve a new state. this footage purportedly shows the dozens of students kidnapped it was released by the perpetrators. those. who lost money media on the loose. and. one member of the separatist group who is filming the boys also appears on camera before turning it back to the children. telling them they will be going to school there are no. was still. good to school yet
11:12 am
the kidnapped students are from them and in the western english speaking part of cameroon separatist groups like the boys are waging an armed struggle for independence in the majority french speaking country groups have longed to destabilize the region and have attacked and killed teachers for disobeying orders to keep schools closed. the armed separatists broke into the school building before dawn and abducted the children from their dormitories as well as three stuff members of. the local governor came to the school to meet with some of the parents assuring them their children would be brought back home. despite what happened she. states government we're no sir and. didn't get. to the next. student the people in the book to
11:13 am
write about the classrooms. but the security men that have got. the incident deepens the atmosphere of fear and is likely to lead to more students staying at home in the future. for more let's bring in our correspondent on to encrease who is standing by in nigeria he just came back from cameroon and i try to do we have any more news about the possible whereabouts of these kidnapped children . at the moment unfortunately in knots although according to the school authorities they have met the demands of the abductors to close down the schools we're still not sure where the kids are and extensive search mission has started by the authorities nonetheless what we do know however is what actually happens in the night between sunday and monday a couple of men showed up at the school this is what some eyewitnesses some kids
11:14 am
who managed to escape told us they managed to get access to one of the dormitories rounded up the people there the children their beds up some of them and before taking them to the bush they also tried to get access to more rooms to more dormitories where the boys and girls were hiding fortunately they did not manage that otherwise it was it would have been likely that more of the kids would have been missing by now. wow so tell us one bit more about this group because i mean these are separatists here they are engler phone we understand they kidnapped fellow angle phone children why would they do that. so most of the schools in the entire region have been closing for more than two years now because of the pressure of separatist groups who told parents and children to boycott it because they don't want the children to go through the francophone education system but the obvious answer would be basically to say well they keep those kids to a show of
11:15 am
a school that they have to close as well nonetheless none of the separatist groups in the region and there's about ten of them have declared responsibility of the boys that we've had before is the term that is use false separatist it doesn't describe any specific group and that is the reason why there's a lot of speculation going on in cameroon now and some people even blame the government they argue they could be. behind it to justify more force more violence not only against separatist but also against civilians what we've been seeing in the past month and what the authorities and the government has been criticized heavily for but this is up until now this is pure speculation we're not sure if this is true or not it is very difficult to find out the truth because you can't just go to this area of cameroon you have a very restrictive government international observers and journalists can't just access the region and so the search now for those seventy nine students and these three staff members who were kidnapped continues chris bring us up to date thank you. well here in germany
