this is deja vu news live from berlin another head rolls of the trump white house attorney general jeff sessions hands in his resignation after being asked to step down by the u.s. president sessions removal could have a far reaching implications for the russian probe the news comes as trump sells the midterm elections as an historic success for his republican party they were tame control of the senate even though they lost the house and she was handpicked by

germany's chancellor to take her place today the woman known as a k k officially entered the race to be the next head of the c.d.u. party will she be able to fend off the two other leading contenders for the top job . i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us u.s. attorney general jeff sessions has been forced out of office by president trump a move comes straight after the midterm elections of president trump as long expressed frustration with sessions after he recused himself from the investigation into links between trump's presidential campaign and russia trump tweeted that session's chief of staff matt whitaker will replace him until a permanent successor is chosen democrats are now concerned that sessions removal may be a prelude to limiting or even ending the russia probe something they're warning would trigger a constitutional crisis. well sessions' firing comes as trump sells the midterms as

a major success for his party other republicans look likely to expand their majority in the senate and also one key governor races the democrats managed to win back the house of representatives but it wasn't quite the big blue wave many of them were hoping to see. trump think on in typically bombastic form boasted of a historic victory in the midterms focusing primarily on republican gains in the senate he largely shrugged off the democrats regaining the majority in the house of representatives though he did offer an olive branch of sorts now is the time for members of both parties to join to give put partisanship aside and keep the american economic miracle going strong but that offer of bipartisanship was quickly undercut the tone turned competent as the president tussle with reporters and he threatened government gridlock if democrats pursue

investigations into his administration. almost from the time i announced i was going to run they've been giving us this investigation fatigue it's been a long time. they've got nothing zero you know why because there is nothing but they can play their game but we can play a better bracing for that contest is the democrats jubilant ties leader nancy pelosi she said voters wanted her party to hold the trump of ministration to account and back to deliver. american people have put want to put into unchecked g.o.p. control of washington and restoring again the checks and balances ilias democrats are here to strengthen the institution in which we serve and not to have it be a rubber stamp for the president trying to do this but palosi also promised efforts to work with republicans who will strive for bipartisanship we believe that we have

a responsibility to seek common ground for the us these midterm elections market timing point but opinions differ on whether road goes from here many votes as a boy by the surge of representation for women and minorities well it's really exciting to see all the change and it's not just in new york it's all over the countryside that's really empowering citing you that others less optimistic i definitely think they'll be some great locket more animosity and sadly you know that's what the tenor of the country's because on capitol hill two thoughts are turning to what my eyes i had the twenty twenty presidential race starts not. first let's talk about the midterms with bill fry morier he is a senior advisor and director of government affairs at stuart and stuart law in washington and he's a specialist in trade bill thank you for joining us here on t.w. first off what is your take on the midterm election results. well i think it was

a good day for democrats in the house with at least a thirty seat pick pick up we still have ten they're looking at in the governors' races as well very importantly six seat pick up so that six of the ten most populous states are controlled by democrats and this is all very important to restore the balance in our country in the wake of today's events in particular visa vi jeff sessions resignation and bill i do want to ask you about your specialty the economy also trade the u.s. economy has been doing pretty well how much of a role has the president played in that trend is it really his tax reform or are there longer term development that play here. oh it's much longer term it's really the obama recovery there's been more and more job growth in the past the last year and a half of obama compared to tromp number one number two the tax cuts are obviously
12:06 am
not good for the long term but number three the economy is strong and employer unemployment is low it's mystifying to the democrats that the president didn't stress economic issues because that's what matters in the suburbs the suburbs are what flipped the house and it was because they were concerned about trump's excesses on issues like immigration i believe yeah he did focus mainly on immigration as a centerpiece of his campaigning leading up to this election you talked about the tax reform and the long term not necessarily being good for the economy some economists are predicting a recession down the road because of the trade we're also china's interest rates going up what is your take. on trade i think we're entering precarious ground and this is another reason why it's important to have democratic control the house the democrats really don't like this approach of putting tariffs steel aluminum terrace for example on allies they understand the need for
12:07 am
a comprehensive china strategy that would include tariffs but believe trump has gone too far and the excesses could tip the world economy into a more precarious position bill what can we expect here in europe trump has indicated he would double down on some of his policies are we going to see for example the trade dispute with the e.u. escalate. i don't think you will i think you've got the trade representative bob white hires or is very good very competent and i think the negotiations u.s. e.u. the president's invested in those primaries need to be set you've got to have a plan to go broad and include sectors like uyghur culture and autos long term but to start with manufacturing tariffs and regulation that's a good approach the u.s. agrees with that and i think in the next year we're going to see major progress in this area democrats will strongly support that as well given again the nature of

the negotiation with a very strong ally all right bill from a lawyer a senior adviser and director of government affairs at stuart and stuart law in washington thank you very much thanks for the opportunity now these midterms like a presidential vote in two thousand and sixteen laid bare the deep divisions within the u.s. around issues like immigration health care and trump suitability to be president to get a feel for the post-election split well away from washington let's hear from some voters in a small town in west virginia. it's the morning after at all trees restaurant in buchan on west virginia people here expect the democrats to make trump's life difficult especially if they launch official investigations into his behavior there's not to be an improvement we're not going to be able to the president still not going to be able to move this country the way he wanted to and when i say move
12:09 am
it i mean better the democrat side is just going to continue until they finally break it and it that's the way it's a. button on his trump country almost eighty percent of voters here cast their ballots for him two years ago when he promised to revive the coal industry they have no time here for what they see as urban democrat voters and we're a diverse country but in some of the metropolitan areas where people depend on social services they vote more socialist than they do you know conservatives so that's why some of those areas went blue two years after the presidential election and the day after the midterms this remains a trump stronghold while donald trump is in the middle of his first term as president i'm glad marco here in germany is in her final term as chancellor and today one of michael's closest allies launched her campaign to leave the chancers

in that position crown carabao has effectively been merkel's right hand woman but with many in the party disillusioned with merkel and her governing coalition her challenge will be to step out of merkel shadow and sharpen her own profile. today she said it was time to open a new chapter. yet she refused to criticize the chancellor's controversial immigration policy saying the challenge now is to find solutions and you know. when somebody knocks on our door and we take their men and give them protection if they then abuse that protection to commit crimes here how should we deal with that and those are the questions that people expect answers to but they don't text back to us to discuss three years later whether what happened in two thousand and fifteen was right or wrong without. america's refugee policy has come under heavy criticism not least from one of crum current powers
