servicemen and civilians attended services in hong kong and in india. millions united to mark the silence that fell one hundred years ago. joining us now from paris is max often. a rainy day in paris somber setting there for the ceremonies that just wrapped up what sort of most for you. it was probably the bull they're all from from the european union youth orchestra that really they had and that was the only moment by the way of the whole ceremony where you had a little applause afterwards but of course you know it's not every day that you see some sixty plus heads of state and government reunited in the same place so that in itself was quite impressive to see as well lots of speeches today too of course in his address french president and i know mccraw he didn't just talk about the events
2:04 pm
one hundred years ago he also spoke about applying the lessons of the past to the present and to the future how would you summarize his main message. yes exactly he made a stark contrast between nationalism and patriotism actually saying that patriotism was the opposite of nation nationalism and that was a pretty thinly veiled message to some of the world leaders that were sitting there besides him. for example the u.s. president donald trump he also made the case for multi-lateralism saying that what was responsible also for those years of peace that the european union in europe of course has enjoyed in the you know ever since the second world war were multilateral organizations he specifically mentioned for example united nations he mentioned the european union and he said this is proof that together we can achieve much more than alone and this again this was a thinly veiled message boards donald trump who has repeatedly said that he doesn't

care much for multilateralism but he prefers to do things bilaterally max it's been a long week of festivities of ceremonies it's not over yet of course this afternoon we'll see the first edition of this paris peace forum it was created by president. for a new global platform to be talks of some of the most pressing challenges for many of these dozens of politicians that will be there of course one notable president will not be attending just walk us through what can we expect from this gathering. the opening is very high level not only a matter when the call will speak but also the german chancellor i get a medical and then you have a couple of pals well you will have a number of heads of state and government which you don't have every day there are actually just a number of certain you know events like this in the world where you can have this kind of attendance so this new peace forum is getting a very good start with everybody being in town for the commemoration but we'll have

to see over the next years if it really can get a foothold let's let's say the munich security conference or the world economic forum in davos it takes years for these things to establish themselves but the message of the form according to my call will be the same one as his speech it will be there to promote multilateralism in the world because my call is a firm believer that this is the foundation for peace and of course as we've heard president donald trump will not be attending that formats often in paris thanks very much well to mark this weekend's send ten or a d w has produced a series of reports delving into the history of what was then called the war to end all wars. in history show the story of the first we are told from different perspectives by peter green from the eastern european perspective from the african perspective from the perspective to keep on the our new book. d.w.
