a palestinian rocket strike in israel the south of the country has been targeted by hundreds of missiles fired from gaza some are destroyed by defense systems some find that target. hamas also attacks an israeli bus using what it claimed was a guided anti-tank missile. one israeli soldier was seriously hurt in this attack how mass is not shying from taking on israel after israeli special forces killed a senior militant on sunday but he says an open battle between us and the zionist enemy only responsible for this crime and its ramifications. so the hamas rockets continue and as long as that threat remains the attacks on gaza will continue to. our correspondent tanya kramer is in gaza city and joins us on the line tanya any sign of deescalation there in gaza. it's very hard to tell you at the moment
8:04 am
because it changes all of our it was a very difficult night for people in gaza don't across the border and south in israel there have been seven and strike in the area in gaza city in the past hour with the. rockets again the. two of them in a ten action has been in the morning that they would expand the range of rockets if it's not. then i think if i had carried out over one hundred. throughout the gaza strip. the gaza strip is going to. be on the three hundred sixty rockets against communities and doesn't it for. now as we mentioned the u.n. is calling on the warring parties to show maximum restraint has there been any attempt at mediation so far well there are reports.
8:05 am
trying to mediate as they've done before but unlike other previous rounds of the siege in the past couple of months there is no sign yet that those efforts will actually lead to a period of calm again i think it's really crucial to see what happens in the coming hours both sides have said in the past week that they don't want to go to an all out war but what they're doing right now is that both sides want to try and now the people of gaza town you're living in desperate conditions in this latest bottoms only makes things worse are there any prospects for things improving there in gaza under hamas control. why it's actually quite interesting this nation because it comes actually in the middle of a period where by your and special according. to reach a common between it's going to come up which included for example that my electricity came in about. that time we treat my page that cash from.

8:14 am
between the two ministers but the chinese had to answer a question about the camps at the press conference that took place after what the foreign ministers sat is pretty much what we have heard before that this was china's internal affair that everybody in the world should support china in combating religious extremism and that to join lists he said and he lectured the join in a sense that they should not listen to what any organization outside of china said but rather consider the information that the government itself is gives well german politicians frequently raise the issue of human rights in their meetings with chinese officials is there any indication that china pays attention. well it is a very frustrating time in terms of human rights the human rights situation has worsened in the last few years but this does not mean of course that these

interferences are completely used lists imagine if this topic had not been raised by him or by other people by organizations by the international press then china would have come gone through with it just denying it now they are at least forced to admit that these camps exist although they try to give it their own spin and there are a few hopefully examples for example the wife of the nobel peace prize the widow off nobel peace prize laureate you shall boy she was freed last time and this was entirely due to persistent efforts by international deccan diplomats to get her out of the country so what else came out of that meeting materials between the german and chinese foreign ministers. at the moment the chinese court the germans somewhat that. has to do with the international situation with the hostility off the trump administration to china one times the chinese foreign

decades ago. well apple was the big loser on wall street monday with worries about a tiny electronic component leading to a staggering forty billion dollars from being wiped off its value shares were down more than five percent after supply a world of drastically lowered shipments of laser diodes used in the i phones facial recognition technology investors became nervous and that's been troubling markets in asia too with technology shares among the biggest losers the nikkei is down two percent hong kong and singapore are also in the red with only shanghai trading flat. while here in europe all eyes are on rome and brussels the deadline for italy to present a revised budget plan today the e.u. is that worries about plans by its. these coalition government to take out more debts to pay for expensive election campaign promises promises planning big cuts in

taxes to boost growth but the e.u. says that's unacceptable given it is enormous mountain of debt the biggest in real terms in europe italy is the euro zone's third largest economy and the second largest manufacturer in here up but despite the country's potential italian economic growth has been weak and it's been lagging behind the e.u.'s average but more borrowing could jeopardize italy's credit worthiness and even put the entire eurozone at risk. now germany has earmarked one billion euros to support a consortium looking to produce electric car battery cells here in the country the measure is expected to be announced later today by common any minister peter maya are designed to reduce the dependence of german carmakers on asian battery supplies protected german jobs at risk from the shift away from combustion engines. the

future of the automobile sector is electric a message that's finally hitting home in germany the country now has just fifty four thousand electric cars on the road that's not many but twenty thousand more than just a year ago. more and more german carmakers are producing electric models folks and has announced a total sales target for all its brands of three million units per year by twenty twenty five but to meet those goals manufacturers need huge amounts of battery cells and there are not enough of them in germany the largest battery producers are in japan china and south korea and so far they have the market effectively cornered . up to now carmakers have shied away from the huge investments needed for battery cell production preferring instead to focus on meeting the costs of new electric and self driving models and stricter emission standards they'd like to see their suppliers taking up battery production but they are just some willing to commit

themselves. imo rumblings efforts to form a multi company consult c m for domestic battery sales production i'm joined by guns and i want program director at the european school of management and technology here in berlin good to have you with us the first question that comes to mind of course is does germany really need its very own electric battery sales production facility well you have to think that. batteries are a commodity nowadays so you can buy them anywhere and they were. predominantly obviously in asia and south korea japan china and we have had some experience with trying to establish a commodity production in germany with the photovoltaic solar photovoltaic cells and that was that it not layout you well know all the companies that were heavily subsidized then quiet by asian competitors and so that. miserably failed
8:25 am
so in that respect i would say trying to get into a commodity market is something different than for example trying to build a complex airplane like apple is with a national champion or european champion. and so i would say it is not necessary. to put a lot of money into this pot and especially i mean this is this is a real push by the government also on the level to bring electric battery sales production into europe and into germany is that why is that right well we would like to have a bit more money being spent on innovation d.-u. is already very good in. r. and d. but there are other technologies that are looming for example sort of state batteries which have a high energy density it means a longer range which are safe than the currently used lithium ion batteries this is a technology which is just five maybe ten years away from commercialization if we spent enough money on that we would be able to accelerate that process and go to
8:26 am
the next level and then maybe we'd have a leading edge in terms of technologies well having a leading edge certainly when it comes to electability is not exactly what is happening in germany germany's lagging behind famously lacking behind but is electability really the way to go for it given that we have a lot of photovoltaic and wind energy that produces electricity at times when we may not need it all and we have to export it to our neighbors and they don't want it that it might make sense to have some large storage capacities where we can put all the electricity that comes from the renewable energies and then use it for transport or i just very briefly are you driving an electric khalidi no i'm cycling are you waiting for the batteries six weeks six years ok yes program director at the european school of management and technology here in berlin thanks for joining us in the studio thank you. and here's a reminder now of the top stories we're following for you. palestinian militants in
