much and i want. to talk. this is d. w.'s lie from bonnie and i day to remember the wars europe pledged never to repeat the french president just close to call for a shipment ballenger examinees mocking germany today for mentoring he said to take steps in that direction in talks with chancellor angela merkel will have full coverage also coming up. ahead of european leaders meeting tomorrow to

discuss breaks it d.w. visits one english town where the neve evoke was among the strongest and what some people and now switching sides. i'm having a home free glad you could join me germany is marking remembrance day with a number of ceremonies hit in the bundestag french president took part in a special service to all of the victims of war and violent oppression in both wildman the one world war two france and germany fought on opposite sides those conflicts expand explore bandaids across the globe where hundreds of millions of lives were lost and destroyed because of the. and during an address to german new makers michael emphasized the importance of france germany and all european

countries working together today. that is why europe must be stronger that is why it must be more sovereign because it will not be able to play its role if it becomes the placing of the world's top powers if it doesn't take more responsibility for its defense and security and its content to play a secondary role on the world stage. too many states now want to erase us from the game. and with me in the studio now to talk more about this is the political correspondent peter craven and kate brady is standing by outside the chants of the re welcome to you both kate to you first now chancellor merkel and president michel are holding talks but they talk to the media beforehand tell us more about what you had. well what we really heard this afternoon was to the leaders i think who definitely showed that they were ready now to take
6:03 pm
on that responsibility now when it comes together as well as the united front when it comes to reform in the e.u. of course there is a number of challenges facing the european union right now and a number of those were named today by emmanuel mccloy and merkel but of course this unity in the european union that is fraying at the edges and right now we see what we saw this afternoon is a really renewed push for those franco german relationships but the big question then will be depending on what the german chancellor and. the french president work on this they say evening here in the chancellery behind me it's whether or not the other european member states will then be ready to play along in their push for reforms in the european union ok how would you assess the franker german relationship at this point of
6:04 pm
a point in time because it has been under considerable strain recently hasn't it briefly if you would. it has indeed as you mentioned being under strain and that's largely due to these reforms of course as i mentioned that they see at the moment that they all the leading countries radio and the two biggest kind of powerhouses radio in the european union that compose that can really begin to reunite europe have to some very difficult months and difficult years and of course that would be really important as well with the european parliamentary elections coming up in may which could then see a surge in the or pm parliament from the right wing populists so the message right now from the koran is very clearly unity and togetherness going forward in the european union. peter over to you then eh talking about the message there from the lead is a lot of talk can they walk the walk and believe delivered the meaningful reforms that the european union needs really is
6:05 pm
a very big question you know the extent to which they've got the leverage they require to tackle wasn't to do the heavy lifting required to deal with some of the massive problems that europe is facing and then there's also the fark of course the dangler mouth was a bit of a wounded chancellor here in germany because of political developments recently she's often being described rightly or wrongly as a bit of a lame duck in the context of german politics maybe even on the international stage and then there's also the problems that the president crowing is facing back home in front of us is popularity rating ratings have gone down to just thirty percent at this point in time nine percent unemployment and strikes across the country so that you've got to we can be leaders with very ambitious goals and it's very difficult to see how they're going to realize those those goals in a very tough environment which is the you know the e.u. at this point in time not just because of bragg's it sent me a hard sell craven political correspondent and kate brady outside the chancellor a thank you to. let's take

a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world france's environment minister has defended plans for taxes which would lead to a rise in fuel prices he says measures are needed to fight climate change it comes the day after hundreds of thousands of demonstrators blocked roads across the country to protest the move. israel's prime minister has warned against holding elections benyamin netanyahu is making a last ditch last ditch effort to avoid the collapse of his governing coalition it's been weakened by the resignation of his defense minister who set down in protest over a ceasefire deal reached with hamas off to a flare up of violence in gaza central american migrants traveling together through mexico have reach the city of tijuana on the u.s. border they plan to apply for asylum in the u.s. that city or thora they say they are unprepared to deal with a number of people expected to arrive in the coming months. ukrainian police have

a force an end to a transgender rally in kiev to prevent clashes with counter protesters two women and a journalist were attacked by unknown assailants police have deployed a heavy presence at bt events into yet seen a twenty fifteen march was disrupted by violent attacks british prime minister theresa may says the next seven days in the breaks that process will be critical for britain in an interview she said that she wouldn't give her backing to a plan to leave the european union until the two sides agree on what their future relationship will be or european ministers are set to discuss that plan this week but as briggs it begins to take shape many who voted to leave the e.u. don't like what they see they don't believe it's an english town where it seems a number have changed their minds. this is one of britain's most years skeptic communities here just to the east of london seventy percent of people voted to
6:08 pm
leave the many of them were young people after a week of drama at westminster but did the under thirty's think now was the point i believe in this is going to be a lot of hassle we want to preach it we want to europe. are far more benefit from leave. i don't think we want to stop arguing and. young adults have been following the political show in london closely the result is that many are not sure whether leaving the you is the right thing to do after all. i was in favor of leaving and when i vote it's a leave. i knew that there would be struggles all of the mess that's going on is has brought me to a point where i almost regret the decision to leave twenty four year old mitchell in the technology industry he had trusted british politicians to deliver on their promise to secure a good deal now he has doubts about whether that is possible to see how much of
6:09 pm
a mess of things actually come into there's no structure and no one knows where it's going to go there's lots of uncertainty but the moment i feel that we should probably we should stay not far away connelly of the local conservative party is just as unhappy with the draft breaks a deal as mentioned but for her the answer cannot be to stay in the i think the. green men this is rubbish basically it's not what we want it's not what we voted for we didn't vote for a load of idiots up in westminster. the whole deal they've made a total mess of the and that's not so we won't we will we want to now. so you can really things for young people from a wrong undoubting believe vote but back in the snooker club mitchell and i believe that britain's perhaps shouldn't have been on. asked to vote on the issue in the first place i want to kind of the decision like this was something as complex of
6:10 pm
europe has been put in my hands because being honest i don't understand. the prime minister understands it so how are we making the decisions. this is the thing everyone has an opinion but no one knows what should happen now with all of the unfolding uncertainty and chaos from pretty young people i'm not sure that the bracks it game can be won any more. now for more i'm joined here in the studio by my colleague reporter alex forrest white and welcome to you alex now we know that prime minister cerise in may is on the immense pressure from within her own party she spoke on television today she gave an interview what was her message she is fighting for her political life at the moment and there are m.p.'s within her party bracks it is who won out and they are trying to secure forty eight conservative m.p.'s that's fifteen percent of the conservative party to write a letter saying there has to be a no confidence vote now they haven't got those numbers yet they've got around about twenty five that she is in danger and because of that she used that interview
6:11 pm
to warn them that they could be risking breck's it altogether you know change of leadership at this point isn't going to make the negotiations any easier it's not going to change the parliamentary arithmetic what it will do what it will do is bring in a degree of uncertainty that's uncertainty for people and their jobs what it will do is mean that is a risk that actually we delay the negotiations and that's a risk that wrecks it gets frustrated. and even dominic robb who was the brett six secretary and till thursday when he quipped over this deal has said that he thinks that the leadership contest could be a distraction so at the moment she she just about seems ok i listen about brussels then for a moment how do you think brussels will respond say for example if britain then tries to renegotiate the draft deal that is obviously
6:12 pm
a huge amount of pressure on theresa made to get a renegotiation going and she is going to brussels this week she's going to meet the e.u. president. and she did make it very clear in that interview that she would only sign off on this divorce deal if she can get it absolutely secure that the that the u.k. will get a good relationship with the e.u. in the future they want this free trade agreement in some form however let's face it at the e.u. they've been trying to do this so town all the details on this for two and a half years with the u.k. maybe they will make a few more compromises but i think it's very difficult. unlikely that they are going to go back to the drawing board that isn't the time for them to do that so i think it's pretty much going to be you take it or you leave it all right that alex let's go through the if then if she survives in her own party and then the with short agreement is signed off next sunday will she get it through british parliament so she would then have to go to push parliament and today we heard the leader of the labor party jeremy corbyn say that labor would not support this deal
6:13 pm
so she hasn't got labor behind her she hasn't got the scottish nationalist party she hasn't got those ten irish unionists the d u p members who prop up the government with her she hasn't got the liberal democrats and she hasn't got many bricks it is it's going to be very tight but there will be a lot of pressure on m.p.'s to make sure that we're not in a situation of a no deal because that could cause we'll have it within the british economy and i mean resistance doesn't just come in one political stripe and resistance is. growing tell us about the potential the idea and the backing for a second referendum people's vote there are people certain we heard in that report didn't way that some people are changing their minds and it is growing across the u.k. and certainly there are m.p.'s who are moving over to that view as well we saw boris johnson the former foreign secretary his brother joe johnson quit government saying the had to be a people's vote so there was definitely
6:14 pm
a rally of support for one however i do not think at the moment that we are there yet to resume a has absolutely ruled it out jeremy corbyn leader of the labor party today said that's not for now that might be for something in the future so they're certainly not there at the moment but they obviously those people behind it want that to happen because i think whatever happens over the u.k. leaving the e.u. is going to be worse than what the u.k. has at the moment. of forest whiting thank you very much indeed. in tennis germany's number one alexander is that it has shocked legendary player roger federer to advance to the championship match at the a.t.p. finals in london the twenty one year old one of the first set seven five that was dealt a blow early in the second when federer broke his serve but was that of iraqi to win the second set in a tie break he will now face it in about a joke of it all kevin anderson.
6:15 pm
of course facing novak djokovic in the final the world number one he cruised past kevin anderson in straight sets six two six two djokovic she's aiming to win a record equalizing sic a.t.p. finals title. you're watching the news from berlin plenty more coming up at the top of the hour of course you can always get the latest around the clock on our web site that is the w dot com i'm going to humphrey in berlin thanks for your company c.c. . history shows the story of the first movement we're told from different perspectives by peter craven from the eastern european perspective from the comfort zone construct from the perspective turkey from the arab world. t w dot com slash w w.
