you know from one small. piece he. starts december twelfth. this is news coming to you live from one of germany's biggest political change. has led the conservative c.d.u. for eighteen years today the party elects a new leader and whoever that is could end up becoming germany's new chancellor also on the program the eiffel tower and other marks for clothes as french authorities brace for more violence this weekend. protesters are planning more

rallies despite the government's u. turn on a controversial fuel tax. and asian investors put on a brave face says the arrest of a top executive at chinese telecoms giant huawei threatens to torpedo efforts to ease u.s. american u.s. chinese trade relations. hello i'm terry martin good to have you with us germany's conservatives c.d.u. party elect a new leader at its annual conference today has been party chair for eighteen years she says she intends to remain chancellor until her term ends in two thousand and twenty one but she could find herself bowing out sooner rather than later depending on who now takes the helm as party chief. before it kicks off the boss takes

a look to make sure everything is said this tour has become a tradition at the seaview party congress it will be until america's last one through this time quite grateful i was the party leader for over eighteen years that is a long time. america will be treading a fine line at the party congress for a goal is to unite the party and yet share the power she is wielded as party leader and his chancellor achieving party unity will be both the linchpin and the litmus test for her successor. but the chancellor has yet to make an endorsement of two thousand i think this is an important today for the one thousand one delegates to set the tone for the future team that will lead the party movement which is why i am looking forward to this and of course i am just as anxious as everyone else that it is democracy in its purest form when there is a range of candidates to choose from everything else will be decided by the

delegates and. it will be a tight race but for now machall can relax. an early christmas gift. a chocolate farewell present for the c.d.u. party leader but for the candidates vying for her position the stack of presents won't be opened until later. well let's bring in a did obvious variant nina from our political desk good morning nina now this is a crucial moment for germany's conservatives with leadership of the c.d.u. party up for grabs what can we expect from that conference and today i think it's really important to stress the significance if they stay it's a historic day in so many ways festival machall cook to come the fast.

to really have control of house the exits politics that has never happened usually people sort of driven out of politics but she determined that she wasn't going to run again as party chief then of course they see to you has never seen a democratic process like this one before where they have three candidates who are vying to become a success though so it's tremendously important what's happening today because the party chief and seventy is an extremely important position and i'm sure that will elaborate just how and why in the minutes to come the big focus of course is on who is going to take over medicals mantel there at within the c.d.u. let's take a closer look now so three candidates buying for the leadership of the c.d.u. party. least of the three candidates want to replace uncle america less c.d.u. party leader they've been crisscrossing the country making their pitch for the

leading role migration and the european union have been big issues where do the candidates stand first up the comeback kid. twenty years ago he was the rising star of the party until merkel snatched away a key post for itself and he ended up leaving politics now he's back and as tough words for germany's asylum laws he's been shown that line not long be my opinion that we should be ready to discuss openly the right to silence where they can really stay this way if we are serious about a european refugee and migration policy. political. he softened his stance in the face of intense criticism but matts remains a migration hardliner party members wanting a younger face for conservative values may go for the new kid on the block inspan the thirty eight year old has given me a healthy dose of grief blaming the party's bad poll numbers on the refugee policy at times including the parties for rule of law and domestic security we are for

public safety in the parks on the street and also on the borders we are the party for europe a europe that protects and protects itself protects its citizens that defends its values a europe that helps us because germany alone is too small. but not everyone is out to bury the past those looking for continuity could lean towards the favorite daughter and the great come come power position she shares with merkel relying less on the u.s. for germany's defense. steep side open there are not too will view the days when we would say to nato and the us so whoever sends the materials and the people and we as germany look on from outside or do little things those days are over. we have to take more responsibility for security and that also means spending more

money for it. and it could come come by our big staked out where they stand another party gets to choose and it's conference on friday where every place is anglo-american now as party chair may replace as chancellor candidate in future elections until then the two will have to work together. so there they are the three candidates who are trying to take over from chancellor merkel hoping to be elected to the party leadership tell us what or the main differences between these three candidates what really gives them their profiles i think of years of broad what's important to know is that in terms of foreign policy cetera they don't defend that but they do differ when it comes to the style of politics and how they are planning to lead the policy and that they come would be very much a continuation of what how maxwell has been leading the policy in in the very
7:08 am
pragmatic way as sort of centrist and trying to get everybody on board to make mattes is a much better and has much more rhetorical and a shopper in it is in his tone etc and all of them would probably move the polity further to the conservative side again because this is something that machall has done with the party some people who support us say that she's modernized the policy other people say that she's essentially tended to far to the left opening and white gap for the right wing populist party to enter the political stage that this is something to closely watch just how the candidates will eat that posse people are watching very closely indeed just going to kind of gear a viewers an idea of how this is going to happen the new cd you party leader will be chosen by about a thousand delegates who are gathering there at the party conference in hamburg they're drawn from the party's regional organizations all over germany it's
7:09 am
uncertain how they will decide at this point but we do have some numbers on who c.d.u. supporters want to see in charge and they were surveyed in recent days by the polling company in for a test deal for the new a r d deutschland ten survey here in germany and the winner is clear forty seven percent of seaview party members prefer on a plate comp common bowel. that's what the poll revealed thirty seven percent want to want fleetly maps to succeed michael as party leader and only twelve percent would all for health minister yes. so nina come. on behind is still topping the opinion polls there in that three way will weight race but earlier this week fleetly maps was endorsed by the bundestag president both going shaurya blow the former finance minister who is a heavyweight in the party it must be said he has quite a lot of authority could that help tip the scales in his favor. well the
7:10 am
wasn't the only important c.d.u. posse member to speak out in favor of one of the candidates and mackel and on the clay come who is seen as ungrammatical favorite have. support from other leading c.d.u. posse members like for example the. state premier of a sleazy five stand on you're going to who spoke out in favor of the come come by so many people have said let's have the delegates decide and of course lists decision to speak out in favor of placemats could influence but then everybody knew that these two go back a long time and that's the who is probably known abroad most famously because he was finance minister during the great crisis. that he is a long ally of that they've met this is no no secret. now the opinion poll that i'm
7:11 am
mentioned earlier it also shows that the battle for the conservative party leadership is boosting the sea views popularity here are the latest figures looking at all the parties main parties in germany's landscape if elections were held across germany today the survey shows the chancellor was conservative c.d.u. c.s.u. alliance would get thirty percent of the vote that's four percentage points from just a couple of weeks ago the social democrats the junior party in. merkel's coalition the center left party they stay up fourteen percent as do the far right party fourteen percent for them and the free market f d p r also holding steady at eight percent the left party would get eight percent as well or down one percentage point and the greens dropped slightly to twenty percent but that still keeps them ranked as the second strongest political force in germany at least in terms of the opinion polls. so i mean a hussar from our political desk is still with us nida what do these numbers mean
7:12 am
how do you explain the gain for chancellor merkel's party in this context i think it does have a lot to do with a decision to actually take responsibility for the loss that the c.d.u. the biggest party in any so in state elections in this year she came out the next day where the c.d.u. lost tremendously and says or writes i've heard the message i am going to step down i'm going to give the party a chance to reinvent itself and see do you has seen like i hinted at in the beginning a truly democratic process where they set forth how they've been battled over opinions they've actually talked openly about what they want to do with michael's legacy when it comes to the refugee policy for example which of course is something that is a very controversial decision in twenty fifteen to keep the borders open to the
7:13 am
migrants and here and so the c.d.u. will have to find a way of dealing with all of these issues in the future and i'm going back and said it's up to somebody else deal with it now and i think that is being appreciated by his you know after this party conference that's happening right now you'll have this awkward situation we're going to michael is still leading germany still leading the country as translator but not leading her own party could that pose a problem for her it's not that unusual but for the c.v. year it certainly isn't fungal americal it was always a red line she always said these two posts belong in the same hand but it's it wouldn't be the first time that these two positions are separate it will depend on just how much revenge simply matz's would be out to get for example because he of course was ousted essentially by anglo american who lost in the competition against her. decades ago. this is something what we have would have to look at
7:14 am
if the place mats succeeds and going back as party chief can see remains. the answer would be yes if they come succeeds most likely anglo-american can continue it's a big question that's being asked right now course will the medical stay in the office says chancellor for the full length of her term will she last until two thousand and twenty one or could she leave earlier and make room for her successor as party leader well the polling figures show that a clear majority fifty seven percent of people want medical to stay in office for the full term thirty nine percent want her to make wait for new leadership and to leave early or so on the medical has been chancellor for nearly thirteen years now nina how has she managed to retain her popularity for so long i mean a lot of other leaders after just a few years their popularity ratings just drop she's remained popular for soul i think she just made
7:15 am
a loss of requirements what gentlemen voters like is somebody at the helm of the country who is a pragmatic leader who looks for consensus and who really looks at the details of the decisions that have to be made so people appreciate her across the board not just within the c.d.u. for her unpretentious style for the pragmatic leadership and to have the feeling that jenny is in safe hands in tabula in times that's the only reason that i can come up with and i'm. from our political desk will be talking about this of course a lot more today i thank you so much. and we will have full coverage of the seaview vote when it happens we'll also have coverage of michael's last speech as party leader that's all coming up later today on. this now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today the aquarius migrant rescue ship has ended its operations the charity that ran the vessel blames

michael's with online calls for further action france is bracing for more protests and perhaps more violence. over more of us bringing a journalist a jake cigar in paris jake the yellow vests have become a magnet for people with all sorts of grievances new groups are joining the movement every day do they really share common goals. that's right i mean earlier this week we saw more than one hundred ambulances blocking class like encore and next week farmers are planning to join this week students also join high school students that is the real hundred high schools were affected by protests this week and young protesters and calm us in france even burned a car in clash with police you know they all have different complaints whether it's taxes wages or education which amounts to the feeling that it all amounts to this feeling that their living standards and their opportunities in france are on the decline these groups don't necessarily have a common goal but they all do have
7:21 am
a common target for their protest and that would be president and manual and his government the president by calling has made concessions to the yellow best movement why have those concessions failed to appease the voters right he's not only made concessions i mean he's completely axed the green taxes on fuel and energy that you originally sparked these protests a month a month ago but many of the protesters and political opposition say it's too little too late they feel like they still have a president who is completely out of touch of the people a president of the rich as they call him since before he was elected will himself hasn't even publicly addressed the crisis the last time he made a public statement was last sunday from the g twenty summit and window scientists to condemn the violence of the riots on saturday but the government announced this morning that math hold will speak next week. some other politicians are trying to make political capital of this far right leader marine le pen claimed in french
