listen. you can win. harmony magazine. from d.w. . this is d w news life from bunny snap elections after all medias velvet revolution acting prime minister nicole alliance takes an early neat way to vote counting still underway he's hoping the parliamentary colleagues will cement his agenda to reform the country also coming up as a signal damaging paris often more violent protests yellow vests demonstrators
9:01 pm
demand further reforms as french president and mine went back on the ground to address the nation and meet with union groups in the coming days. the looming. front of the home free glad you could join me for years of being counted off today's parliamentary elections in all may on the media state media report that the acting prime minister in a call question yan's alliance is needing in the early preliminary results he had pushed for this not bad at all for a peaceful anti corruption uprising swept into power the of this year it was the most sweeping transformation in the south caucasus country since its independence from the soviet union nearly thirty years ago and international election observers were monitoring today's vote in which passion yet is seeking a stronger mandate for his planned reform drive. to his supporters he's
9:02 pm
a true man of the people a former journalist turned politician nicole passion jaan has a way with words and an unassuming style that has won the hearts and minds of many armenians pushing young was elected prime minister by parliament in may after galvanizing a civil disobedience movement to protest a power grab by the country's prime minister sergey sarkozy on donning his trademark backpack and baseball cap pushing and led weeks of mass protests that ultimately forced sarkozy on's resignation. but the longer willing republican party retained its majority in parliament in october pushing on step down as prime minister to trigger early elections during his campaign he blasted the old elite as corrupt and pledged to revive the economy in a country where a third of the population lives in poverty principally some of the economic agenda is our priority you have a very important and ambitious plan to transform i mean your grammarian into an industrial country. into
9:03 pm
a technological and industrial state is. a strongly passion jaan remains popular if you doubt that his my stuff alliance will come out on top of the race among eleven parties and political blocs. isn't doing both for nicole passion young his virtue as an honest during his seven months in office his hands were tied because the former ruling party still dominated parliament. until he gets rid of all the corrupt thieving politicians from the previous government he won't be able to do any good news. the capitol yerevan may look gloomy shrouded in december fog but on the street there is real hope among armenians that this election could mark the advent of real democratic change. and for more i'm joined now by journalist joshua kuchera he is in the capital yerevan hi that joshua we have the first preliminary results coming in what are you hearing that. well it looks like from
9:04 pm
the other preliminary results which are quite early at this point they're more or less tracking what we expected what opinion polls were saying and that's that. is my step alliance is is when you know it's a pretty commanding victory. i don't think we'll know complete results for a while now but everyone expected and these results are showing that he's going to have the overwhelming majority in parliament and what about a voter turnout how's that looking. that's been interesting we do have more concrete numbers on that the central election commission announced the turnout was forty nine percent which compared to the last parliamentary elections which was last year that was sixty one percent so it's down quite a bit and there's been a lot of speculation about why that might be part of it is certainly that that the old regime used a variety of of unsavory about that's to get people to the polls they would
9:05 pm
organize government workers to go on to go together or or in many cases just bribing them and that's not happening this time around so that's sort of the accounts for some of that some pro pasha yon analysts were suggesting but there also might be some complacency among the electorate because the polls showed him with such a huge victory that a lot of people thought maybe they just stay home or as these votes come in then take a brief look ahead what are the real challenges that passion young faces if he does indeed gain that part of the tree majority. well the u.s. going to have a lot of challenges i mean that he's made very big promises. and especially in terms of the economy yeah i mean as economy has been stagnant for a very long time and he has raised expectations quite high and talked a lot about. jobs and higher salaries and doing that by bringing foreign investment
9:06 pm
and so far in the seven months that he has been prime minister the economy hasn't really changed in there hasn't been any significant new foreign investment he's always been able to say well this is because i don't have control of the parliament and they're blocking my and shouldn't ask you this what you should have full control of everything and that's going to make you not have any more excuses journalists to joshua caetera in the media capital yerevan thank you and let's get you up to date now on some of the of the stories making news around the world saudi arabia says it will not extradite two suspects wanted in turkey for the killing of journalist jamal khashoggi prosecutors have filed warrants for the arrest of a top saudi aid on the country's deputy head of foreign intelligence she was last seen alive who came to the saudi consulate in istanbul in october.

thousands of people have taken to the streets of london in opposing rallies and tea breaks it marches call for britain to remain in the twenty eight nation bloc meanwhile the far right ukip party organized a brags that betrayal march to protest against the exit deal prime minister to resign may has negotiated with the new. france is reeling off to another saturday a violent protest by the so-called yellow vest movement police detained almost two thousand demonstrators with dozens reported injured in clashes that french president a minor and because on the growing pressure to address the anti-government unrest and now says that he plans to speak to the nation on monday. scenes of destruction paris burned out cars broken store fronts. the property damage is believed to be even higher this time around. some persians are frustrated that instead of course sauce and flowers they have to smell tear gas
9:08 pm
every week and. you can understand the yellow vests movement but this is completely unacceptable it's been several weekends in a row now look around you everything's broken it damaged all the shops had to close and spend money to shut everything up and it happens every week most countries. many people blame a car for not talking to the protesters. i think it's very hard but it's. the people that french people. think. the president's call has remained silent so far he showed his face after the worst riots one week ago but refused to dialogue with the yellow vest protesters. now after a fourth consecutive weekend of violence it looks like my kong can't avoid confrontation any longer to find ways to mollify protesters his office announced
9:09 pm
a public consultation and a meeting with representatives of trade unions on monday citizens all over france also waiting impatiently for his life address to the nation in the week ahead. but with my cost of prove a rating hovering just over twenty percent and the unrest expected to dent the french economy the damage will be difficult to wash away. well the yellow vests movement has been organized almost exclusively over social media with no official leadership or an official facebook account this is opened up space for remus sometimes known these days as fake news to circulate and all report to be an essay of has been looking into this for us good to have you with us here in the studio and tell us first what kind of room is a secular moment one of the most blatantly false claims out there right now is this claim that france is about to sign away its sovereignty to the united nations by inviting millions of refugees into europe it's unclear what the origin of this myth
9:10 pm
is but it was propagated by a conversation among two spokespeople of the yellow vest movement on facebook as the facebook live this was maxime new code and if it to weigh every toy is credited with organizing the first protests or at least calling for the first protests let's take a look at the. one thing about the united nations is that mcchrystal is supposed to sign a pact to relocate four hundred eighty million migrants to eight different countries and give up his seat at the u.n. to someone else. now nothing he said right there was actually true there are only two hundred sixty million international migrants worldwide so only about half as many as he was talking about coming into europe but there will be a migration pacts on the table. this weekend trying u.n. nations what they're going to be discussing though is the human rights of refugees
9:11 pm
and they're going to be sketching international cooperation between countries but not actually relocating any migrants so fake news then spreading among the yellow vests as we could see i mean it does beg the question i have to wonder is that then this fake news that casing about the movement itself yes there is actually there was controversy just yesterday when u.s. president donald trump tweeted that protesters in france are actually chanting we want trump the french press agency said this was not true they gave it a false rating on the fact checker our correspondent on the ground so that neither did she see nor hear any reports of people actually showing support for trump in this way in paris tropez a ten percent approval rating among the french so that also seems to be fake news and actually the origin of this this kind of claim was probably a video that was circulating on right wing web sites in the u.s. showing a video purporting to be in france but actually it was in london earlier this year
9:12 pm
and the thing is that room is full so it's fake news whatever you want to call it it can have a significant impact on movements i mean are we seeing that now is this influencing the the protest movement well it is kind of curious that you have people who are at the heart of this movement i mean this is we're talking about people who started this movement. messing with the facts propagating fake news but this remains a leaderless movement so there's a dynamic here that you don't see and a lot of other movements there's nobody calling the shots these people who are probably in the fake news don't have as much of a reach as maybe the. head of a organization a union or something like that which these people are not leading the protests and it's i mean the protests have the gentleman concerns one of the major ones that cause out of touch with the french people and this is not something you can attribute to fake fascinating all reports s. of looking into this for us thank you very much indeed.
