this is g.d.p. news live from berlin yellow best of protesters hit the streets of france for a fifth straight weekend thousands of police have been deployed to prevent or violence about protesters vow to keep pressuring residents from. the. my un climate change talks shoot into overtime in poland campaigners urged deadlocked negotiators to get their act together but after debating through the night there are still deep divisions on how to curb global warming.
4:01 pm
i'm calm assman thanks for joining us police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in the french capital paris as so-called gallow vests demonstrators take to the streets for the fifth weekend in a row scuffles broke out on the sidelines of a largely peaceful demonstration thousands of police have been deployed to contain any outburst of violence demonstrators say that life in france is an affordable enough presence of menu mccrone is not doing enough to respond to their concerns. helen humphrey has been following the events in paris earlier asked how today's protest compared to those of the past several weeks from people i've spoken to they have told me that the mood is calm and that there are a few people that said the mood has definitely shifted aid in the last hour we were down amongst the crowd that you can see behind me on the show isn't easy and t. a gas was there. least we breathed in
4:02 pm
a little bit of that ourselves as so far i've counted thirteen cracks thirteen loud bangs as a stun grenades have been used we've also seen sirens as you can see a heavy police presence here on the show eight thousand members of the police force have been deployed to the french capital including these riot police and in the last hour the songs that body language has shifted somewhat they've been writing in themselves some of them have been raising their riot shields that said people i've spoken to have said that their message is one of passive resistance if you take a look at this lone yellow vest protester behind me waving the tree the french flag on the back of her yellow vests it says the word pay quite simply peace and a hot there as well so so far the marines shifting slightly but ok for now we're going to have to see how these protests continue to evolve over the course of the day not the violence and not the looting that we're seeing here on the show is
4:03 pm
that he's a last weekend we've heard about those attacks and wage concessions from the president what else could he offer to these protesters. it seems that the french president to manually michael is in a tight spot right now five days ago he offered those concessions to the french people those concessions though could end up putting him at odds with yuri's their own budget deficit regulations so he doesn't have much more that he could given still be in line with those regulations politically though he's in a very tight spot we had a chance here of machall to me see on mccall resigned so what's gone from being an economic protest is now a political protest people say that he's worried about things like the environment and the fuel tax hit that worry he's worried about the end of the world people here say they're worried about the end of the month they can barely get by and they say things like can. sessions such as the raising of the minimum wage don't go far
4:04 pm
enough anyway the way that it will work is actually affect one in four people on that minimum wage anyway so they say it's a symbolic gesture and it's simply too little too late for them what's next i mean this is the fifth straight weekend now how long will these protests go on. will people here remain resolute they say they will continue coming out to remember of course this is just one scene from paris in the countryside and in other towns we've seen of people take to roundabouts to you who've created roadblocks every day day in day out and they say that they will continue doing that until the first of january the government on the other side has said that it is now in a consultation period on issues such as taxation the environment and immigration and that that consultation period will be wrapped up as well on the first of january until then though it seems that many of these protesters who insist on
4:05 pm
coming out will remain here so then i may be no one inside the hell of humphrey in paris thank you very much. turning now to poland where marathon united nations climate talks are in overtime but a deal appears to be in reach the delegates from nearly two hundred countries have been trying for more than two weeks to hammer out rules aimed to save the world from the worst effects of global warming or their stock on how countries should report to production is in greenhouse emissions and how to finance the fight against climate change and poor nations a small group of countries including the u.s. russia and brazil are holding up the deal joining us now is george marshall he's the founder of climate outreach an organization that aims to improve the understanding of climate change he's back now in london after attending a conference george we know it's not unprecedented that these talks going to overtime who can we blame this time. we tend to have the same three factors operating again and again there are very very powerful. political and
4:06 pm
industrial interest especially in production which deliberately built the process. we have consistently now for a generation so you know an abject failure of political leadership but then there's a third factor as well which is what politicians and governments can only take action with. the mandates what they've given for doing so and really i wouldn't say blame but i mean but i think we all hold a responsibility from not having sufficiently demond it action from from government and industry and really the opportunity now i think is for people to really step up and say no we insist on this at the ballot box we talk about it all friends and family in our workplace and if necessary we go out and we demand it with protests and say we need to see it was happening george you have lots of experience speaking to people who don't believe in global warming what would you say to the countries
4:07 pm
there maybe the us and russia that are holding up this deal. i think we need to recognise we're just having thousands and thousands of scientists giving us just not strong enough people to understand climate change is something which speaks as a narrative as part of their personal and national journey so for these countries we have to find a way that they see this is part of a national story that's going to be different in every country for for america it might be one of you know opportunity and growth for russia might be one of stability and security for the middle eastern countries it might be one of them rooted in the islamic values every country needs his own story and this process really needs to get moving we need to start writing this now i think and again we need to crush i think in these countries we need people who are demanding a form and you mentioned pressure mentioned stories mean what kind of stories should we be telling people right now this problem has become so urgent that it doesn't seem though they have to be quite get that. there is
4:08 pm
a danger of course the psychological danger of the more you tell people hey this thing for was bad it's even worse when we said it was the moment people really treat and form a collective tomorrow so i think we have to be finding posted ways of talking about it there are huge changes already underway which all very positive in the energy systems and in transportation these need to weave much faster and we need to make people feel about the that the energy transformation which is already underway is something positive which is going to bring all kinds of benefits for them in terms of how an equity you know those stories are there but what is failing is public engagement necessary and i will say i think governments are really failed in their responsibility to reach out and gauge my educated public about what's happening what needs to happen george marshall of climate outreach and london thank you very much. thank you. now to some of the other stories making news around the world australia has formally recognized west roussillon as the capital of israel

most direct threat to peace and stability in the region serbia doesn't recognize kosovo and says it could even intervene militarily a threat which failed to deter kosovo in lawmakers. a reason to celebrate many kosovan see the creation of a proper standing army as a necessary step towards full nationhood. sure this is a historic agreement for us and a deserved one. has its own army and a state that is being further consolidated and strengthened every day. who will make his presence in the kosovo parliament who are in favor of converting the four thousand strong security force into a fully fledged domi. the government wasted no time ministers you know ceremony to moan to historic decision. kosovo was born out of conflict twenty years ago the nato alliance intervened to protect the ethnic albanians of kosovo during the bid for independence from serbia. nato has been there ever since keeping the peace

ukrainian church organizations met saturday to elect a leader who can spearhead a united and independent church in ukraine that's something that some sections of ukrainian society have been calling for since at least the hundreds. but this is a great historical event our own independent church is being created in ukraine we've been waiting for this wonderful historical event for hundreds of years we're happy and joyful because we have our own independent church in an independent state . ukrainian religious support for the russian orthodox church has been waning for a long time support for an independent church has grown since the rumbling conflict on the border between the ukraine and russia began in two thousand and fourteen. yeah. i think a lot will change. god willing the war in the east of our country will come to an end. because we want this and pray for this. and the independence ukrainian
