the streets no. that's right color you'll see that we're no longer on the shoals and he's a where around twenty meters away we moved from that position because we got caught up in a cloud of tear gas which was fairly unexpected bearing in mind that we weren't seeing scuffles at that stage that certainly wasn't the looting or the ransacking of shops that we saw the previous weekend here largely peaceful demonstration around three thousand yellow vests taking to the streets this weekend here in paris a small but determined protests but there were eight thousand police officers here on the streets of paris including riot police a very determined response from then a stun grenades used tear gas used and perhaps some questions over the robustness over that response in light of more peaceful demonstrations. well no less than a week ago we saw mcallen address the nation he made

a raft of promises to try to reduce people's anger in the streets did that work out . well not according to some of the people that i've been speaking to here one yellow vest processes said to me fairly calmly these concessions come from a former invest invest ment louis the fourteenth style leader who is out of touch with the french population they've also said to me that although the french president has tried to find a way to increase the minimum wage that will only affect one in four people who actually receive the minimum wage what they say they want to see is tax a decreases across the board however that puts them then the french government at all it's with the euro zone budget constraint so little wiggle room there for the french president and he could look further embattled yet many yellow vest protesters shouting mcmullen to micio. michael resigned so what started out as
6:04 pm
economic protests have really become political protests here in france and what about people in france who are not they are marching with what is their level of support for this movement it hasn't shifted at all now after five weeks of protests . it's changed somewhat we're now seeing a level of fifty six percent of the population who say that they would actually like to see these protests come to an end french president emmanuelle michael process it is safe to say that life could go on the interior minister kisses testin a who was just in strasbourg where we also were for the terrorist attack on a cheese day said you supported all foresees that you congratulated them for the response and and yet you helped them so perhaps among the general public now the consensus is starting to change somewhat however the people i spoke to here said we will continue in cities we will continue to occupy roundabouts as they have done in

towns on the countryside at least until january until of the french president makes the concessions that we're all seeing for. free in the streets of paris for us thank you very much. turning now to a kind of it's a poland but a marathon united nations climate talks are in overtime but a deal appears to be in reach delegates from nearly two hundred countries have been trying for more than two weeks to hammer out rules aimed to save the world from the worst effects of global warming but they're stuck on how countries should report productions and greenhouse emissions and how to finance the fight against climate change in poor nations a small group of countries are said to be holding up the deal. joining us now is george marshall he's the founder of climate outreach an organization that aims to improve the understanding of climate change he's back now in london after attending a conference george we know it's not unprecedented that these talks go into overtime who can we blame at this time. we tend to have the same
6:06 pm
three factors operating again and again there are very very powerful. political and industrial interest especially in production which deliberately built a process. we have consistently now for a generation to abject failure of political leadership but then there's a third factor as well which is what politicians and governments can only take action with the the mandate that they've given for doing so and really i wouldn't say blame but i mean but i think we all hold responsibility for not having sufficiently mom did action from from governments and industry to time to reveal the tunes you know i think is for people to really step up and say no we insist on this at the ballot box we talk about it all friends and family and all workplaces and if necessary we go out and we demolish it with protest and say we need to see it was happening george you have lots of experience speaking to people who don't
6:07 pm
believe in global warming what would you say to the countries there maybe the u.s. and russia that are holding up this deal. i think we need to recognize what just having thousands and thousands of scientists giving the message isn't strong enough people tend to understand climate change as something which speaks as a part of that personal national journey so for these coaches we have to find a way that they see this is part of a national story that's going to be different in every country for for america it might be one of you know opportunity and growth for russia might be one of stability and security for the middle eastern countries it might be one of the rooted in islamic values every country needs its own story and this process really needs to get moving we need to start writing this now i think and again we need precious i think in these countries we need people who have the money not to form and you mentioned pressure mentioned stories me what kind of stories should we be telling people right now this problem has become so urgent that it doesn't seem
6:08 pm
though the be quite get that. there is a danger of cool. psychological danger of the more you tell people hey this thing for it was bad it's even worse when we said it was the most people rich treats and so full of collective tomorrow so i think we have to be finding positive ways of talking about it there are huge changes already underway which are all very positive in the in energy systems and in transportation these need to weave much faster and we need to make people feel about. that the energy transformation which is already underway is something positive which is going to bring all kinds of benefits for them in terms of health and equality of opportunity those stories are there but what is failing is public engagement necessary and i will say i think governments are really failed in their responsibility to reach out and gauge make a public about what's happening what needs to happen george marshall of climate outreach in london thank you very much. thank you. now to some the other stories
