future we'll bring you the latest her lovely. place. i'm on the thought she might great to have your company. the u.s. government is partially shut down after lawmakers missed a deadline for approving a spending then president donald trump and congress could not agree on the five billion don a bill for a border wall between the u.s. and mexico the democrats say they are more effective solutions to border security the tramp refused to sign a bipartisan stopgap bill to avert the shutdown. it was one of donald trump's most divisive election promises a wall running the length of the three thousand kilometer border between the u.s. and mexico to keep illegal migrants out of america still insists the wall is needed to counter drugs and human trafficking and gang violence on friday he took to

twitter our great country must have border security we don't want people coming in that aren't supposed to be here the only thing that's going to stop that is great border security with a wall or a slot or whatever you want to call it but we need a great barrier the fortification would be totally effective and also beautiful according to trump. but u.s. lawmakers are not convinced democrats and republicans have failed to reach agreement on funding the government democrats held out against trump's demand for five billion dollars to pay for the wall i don't think. there is any. funding for border. national security for us. unanimously say.

around a quarter of the u.s. federal government has gone into shutdown the senate and house of representatives but you to reconvene at midday in washington in the hope of averting a full scale crisis over the holiday period. the only. ones in washington i said what implications will this shutdown have. all of the implications are for four hundred thousand government workers that will not receive a paycheck thank goodness for those people. the senate yesterday before it went home for the nights without a deal on the border wall or the five billion dollars for the water law. decided law or decided on a law that those people furloughed will receive back pay for the time they have to work but not get paid so that's a good thing the government is impacted by a quarter sort of speak because
12:04 pm
a quarter of the funding is not there and that impacts for example the department of justice the problem of homeland security but also for example the department of urban development. this is where we stay so far what's really going on here is that it's all about the money follow the money five billion dollars this is what mr president wants and what he so far does not get and the debate was reshare due to today is there a deal that could still be made do you think. this is washington there's always a deal to be mates but it would be highly speculative on my part to say oh yeah there will be a deal today on saturday or to say no there won't be any deal possible at all what's really going on here is that this is that we are in the waning hours of the waning days of a republican majority in the house they have been in the in the senate of course and they will have more for the more so in the senate next year when the democrats take the house after gaining forty seats in the midterm elections however this is

the last chance for president trump to make good on a critical crucial and huge campaign promise that he will push for the wall that he will build the wall and the mexicans pay for it now that's off the table mates because they're not paying for it so he needs the money from congress and is the last chance for him with republican majority in the in congress in the house of representatives to get his money after that there's no chance of all and this is what it's all about and it's just been as you said building a border of what was one of trump's main and most cherished election promises given that how likely is it that he would give up on this idea. it's not like at all if we're living in the in the times of. president trump after all and of course he was first. warming up to the idea to get actually an extension for funding for the government and to be somewhat flexible regarding the wall in terms of how the
12:06 pm
funding is located so this but that changed after watching conservative television here and talking to actually conservative pundits who basically want him over the airwaves if you do this you will risk your reelection in two thousand and twenty so he changed course again now having said this is it possible that he can change course again after saving face but how do you say face now. absolutely possible but that would be absolute speculation on my part to say you know this is going to happen this way so we'll have to wait and see what happens. on this saturday or tomorrow or the days after. in washington thank you very much for that. thousands of people have taken to the streets of the hungarian camp to budapest for another night of anti-government protests it was the latest in a string of demonstrations that began last week over controversial reforms to labor

laws and the judiciary but the testers are now voicing why did discontent with the policies of prime minister brown's government demonstrators also andrew restrictions an academic in press freedom as well as increasing corruption case to press ahead with their protests into the new year here's what some of them have to say we want democracy we want america seen hunger we want democracy and we we hope we can change we can change it here so nights tomorrow we're going to stay on to that's going to change now days the processes that are going on in this in this country are really bad for the poor and the most deprived groups so i'm here to protest for damn also. fight for five years we didn't have this kind of crowds and this kind of the restoration but that diverse people are together i mean. people from different points of backgrounds people from different social backgrounds i'm

really happy that every party are proud to present itself and this is. hopefully where we make a difference. now to some other stories making news around the wild a double car bombing in somalia's capital mogadishu has killed at least five people the first blast struck a checkpoint at the presidential palace the second came minutes later at a nearby intersection the insurgent group al-shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attacks. in london authorities say they've killed one of the country's most wanted fugitives police. known as was behind the killings of three journalists in march as well as a string of other deaths the former leftist rebel desert of the country speace process and allegedly established a drug trafficking ring. vest protesters in france have returned to the

streets but in paris and other cities the numbers were shocking down from the previous weeks at a traffic ticket in the south of the country one person was killed in a car accident and the protests president in modern mccraw has made a series of concessions to quell weeks of violent anti-government protests. german astronaut alexander guest is addressing a press conference in cologne today now that he's back on earth guest spent more than six months aboard the international space station during that time he became the first german to take command of the i s s also known as astro alex guest undertook various science experiments and spoke out of the need to protect our planet he landed back on earth two days ago. he was really looking at live pictures off of the man known as astra alex has begun talking in cologne but for law on his mission i'm it's my great pleasure to welcome
12:10 pm
derek williams from our science desk welcome derek now this was astro alex or get a gets second. mission to the i s s why did the e.s.a. the european space agency choose him to become commander in chief during his mission well i think that for a number of different reasons not least because alexander guest is and is a very charismatic and and media savvy person and yes he spent a lot of time in a lot of energy also trying to bring this time that he spent on the i asked as close to the people down on earth in particular to children so he's been he's been a real boon for for a number of years now simply in terms of of press relations so i think that that's one of the big one of the big reasons but of course he's also an extremely accomplished scientist and he's a he's a very good he appears to have done a very good job of leading in the i assess during at times
12:11 pm
a fairly what at times became a fairly critical mission here's here's a look back at the last couple of months on the i.r.s. as leading up to the landing. and that from space after spending months in zero gravity alexander gassed had to be helped out of the tiny so used capsule that ferry to him and his crew back to earth through to fifty years on the feels like coming home although i am in kazakhstan in a place i haven't been to before it still feels like coming home. you know. his fellow astronauts the russian surrogate procopio off and american serina anon chancellor both seemed exhausted but all are said to be doing well. the capsule was docked onto the international space station in the i.s.a.'s which has been home to the astronauts for the past six and a half months despite several setbacks the crew performed dozens of scientific

experiments on board and guest later became the first german to take over command of the i assess he used his unique perspective to offer insight on environmental issues via social media before he left the i assess guess sends a message to future generations. when looking down to earth i feel that i have to apologize. it looks like my generation is not going to leave the planet in the best condition. back on earth guess just ready to celebrate christmas with his family and remains determined to fight for the future of humankind. so dedicated till he gets rotated wouldn't create cows and times around the earth he would talk to them not so long back and he seems to have a message doesn't he when he really does i interviewed him for our science fair tomorrow today and the message actually i talk to several astronauts and
12:13 pm
a lot of them convey the same couple of messages the first one that they convey is is that the earth is actually borderless from space all of these all of these ideas they say when they come back of of societies and and the idea that we draw these lines that none of that exists from space and this idea of one world in the second idea that they all conveying which alex and i guess also repeated over and over again was the idea that it's the fragility of the earth when you could really see it this this type this tiny blue dot that was the name of his of the first mission that he was on through floating through the vastness of this hostile realm of space and how and how fragile the entire environment as and as we saw this very emotional message to his grandchildren saying he doesn't think that we're doing a good idea as caretakers of our world because from space you can see things you can see the droughts you can see the wildfires you can see the marine pollution you
12:14 pm
can see the deforestation so it was actually a fairly a fairly somber note that he struck there at the end of this mission but also one that i think that he feels very strongly needed to be said and beefy did it is his mission over or does sound a guess have more to do now he's got a lot more to do with now is when the mission the mission that it's just ended that's the active aspect of being an astronaut now it's going to be more about the press aspect and the. media aspect getting people excited about space getting people excited about the i os as getting people excited about possibly going on further missions to the moon and then on possibly to mars pretty interesting thank you very much eric williams for talking to us about this he watching the news coming to you live from london we have more news coming up for you at the top of the alba do remember you can or wrist check out our website for the latest news and information that's dot com and also you can follow us on
