indonesia thank you so much for making time to speak to us. four indonesian tsunami is a constant threat just part of living in a seismic region but this latest one followed an eruption of krakatoa volcano which has been especially active since june the volcanic island from the sea off to one of the largest eruptions in recorded history the legendary krakatoa more than a century ago. and i'm now joined in the studio by frederick tillman he is the head of the seismology program at the german research center for geosciences thank you for joining us today a sephardic it seems this tsunami was triggered by a volcano what do you know as the cause behind it so we're just trying to get our heads or on what what actually happened it is that this isn't a krakatoa which is located if it's just emerging above a surface of a sea has been erupting for some time and there's not

a very clear seismic signal so we're just going through very carefully for records and seems there was some activity but very small we wonder if you have you can see the effects of a landslide but we have only a very big picture currently but when you think of tsunamis we always hear of warning systems once there any in this particular area so the warning systems are essentially designed to record and locate the earthquakes in terms of magnitude and then if it's a very large earthquake under the sea then it will trigger most likely a tsunami we are still not really able to get four hundred forty seven types of tsunamis which are more rare most large tsunamis of course but of quakes but occasionally events like this this tragic event that happened today where it's it does not clear seismic signal associated with it and how rare such events. there are few examples of a willing slave triggered once i mean did you model of the pole remember the quake in indonesia early in the year which was

a large earthquake but the real tsunami was also most likely triggered. landslide there was a case in one thousand nine hundred eighty up on new guinea. and so these lengths to get tsunamis to occur sometimes was associated with all kind of activity ok so could anything that have been done in this situation to either prevent it. or to forecast it in advance of the current state of the art i'm afraid no of course feel already beginning to think well how could we have done better as a community of two physicists and there are some weak sick notes but maybe could have been picked up if we had had a very dense network of ocean and precious sends us then just could have also been detected but these are prohibitively expensive so there was a need to look at new technical approaches to that all right now krakatoa volcano which we've been talking about has been erupting for months now but this is the first tsunami it seems to have triggered how much danger is that that this could happen again is very difficult to say i mean i don't want to cause panic but of
