. travelling opera troops have been crisscrossing china from east to west and from north to south for thousands of years only a handful remain today. mr lou's troop is one of the few that are left. there traveling through shanxi a province in central china that is often seen as the birthplace of chinese civilization it's a rural area that has somehow missed out on china's economic boom and the explosion of megacities taking over the country. the troop is like a family all ages and each with their own story and reasons for choosing this i ten or at lifestyle at times bringing husbands wives and children with them around the world. like i'm twenty years old.

and i'm from a small village in china. i had to leave my parents when i was twelve and i joined the company after studying at an opera school. in the beginning i was so young that i really missed my parents. i remember crying a lot back then. i've been here for four years now and how can i put it things have changed. i don't know if i like this life but i've gotten used to it. already up. we don't have much time to set up the stage. oh. this is a typical village one where farmers spend their time in their fields and entertainment is rare. the one or two times a year that the opera comes to town are still

a big event a moment of a scape and welcome or spike from the calm of life in the countryside. the. the troops will stay for two days maybe three they live out of suitcases no where is home but everywhere is home this time they found lodgings in an abandoned school lee is the youngest performer in the group she didn't choose this life for herself her family decided for her in an attempt to help her avoid a future of labor and poverty. what time are we going on tonight around eight thirty pm. ok say we should be done around eleven pm moment night. that means we'll probably only get to bed around one am it's going to be a long tiring night. how long are we staying here four or five days i think last

time we stayed five days so it will probably be the same thing. the last place where we performed was much better. the village has been expecting the troupe the opera is by no means just fun it's seen as an offering to the gods of barter in exchange for amusing them the people hope their wishes for a prosperous harvest good health or the birth of a boy will be granted. in its own way the opera is as much a religious service as it is entertainment. and it's more fun to watch a performance then to go to the temple. which now they are going to have ladies and gentlemen first timers and upper regulars good evening

i. believe he is about to go on stage every night she plays the same part an imperial guard a small supporting role. that's because she's not only the youngest in the troupe but also the latest recruit she still has a long way to go before she can take center stage and perhaps one day with the queen's costume. if you can even sample the logic of course i dream a success. but to get that one has to work very hard. and it's difficult for young people to walk their way up. we generally go to bed very late. and his heart and tiring to get up so early and to get to work quickly.

villages the arrival of the offer is a huge event. that farmers rarely stop working they have such a difficult life. we offer them a moment of respite. distractions are rare here but they allow themselves to get comfortable and enjoy the show we put on. people from neighboring villages have also come the songs and dances the costumes and the ancient story lines offer a three hour a skate from the hard daily grind of life on the farm and work in the fields in the heat of a summer day it's an older crowd that gathers for the show along with a few children.

every year the audiences seem to have shrunk a reflection of the rural exodus that has left entire regions empty and which has no end in sight. for those who remain all generations of a family lived together in one small home and they do not share the same opinions nor see eye to eye when it comes to opera and maintaining traditions. so my neighbor told me the operas here. that i have too much work i can't go. and that's not all of it i'm not sure i want to go you're right it's always the same especially when we don't understand the story. that way you young people don't

far from everything it's not very lively you. so how long are we staying here. about four days i imagine. boring. and not a lot to do it feels really remote. and. setting up the stage takes almost an entire day. the artists who agreed to handle this long and tedious task are rewarded with a small bonus. the others drop off their bags where they'll be staying with some villagers who agreed to put them up in exchange for some money. in the for the making man stuff tomatoes it smells really good the

can provide for myself and also help my family. i'm even able to save a little money and help my mother. provided i'm careful about my spending and. i come from a very poor family so i do whatever i can and work hard to help all of. that is my destiny opera has given me a better life. than the further. we managed to adapt. and always end up getting used to this way of life. this country's enormous it's like a never ending journey. but it's a chance for us to discover new cultures. the public is full of praise and always compliment us. it's a wonderful reward because the work is extremely difficult. we're very lucky.
4:32 pm
that's what motivates us to continue. the next stop is almost one hundred kilometers to the east even farther from beijing and its prestigious operas a forgotten region it's a bit like the soft underbelly of a very large dragon if i don't know what that when do you think we'll finish this tour. we still have four operas to do maybe five. so we have about twenty days to go. look at explore nas on park we could have some
4:33 pm
fun once the tour is over then go home and finally get some rest. and do you what do you plan to do. later. i'm going to rest fast and i have back in travel a bit where to. beijing. in beijing you can visit the imperial palace it's a fantastic place. it's very beautiful inside. if i had a bit of time i'd love to go to shanghai i've never been before. people say they have beautiful shops and boutiques there. i hope we can have some fun once the tories over who work is so tiring yes under stress with him. i situation is pitiful it's so hard we don't have a minute of rest not a moment to relax or decompress.
4:34 pm

our. ed. thanks thanks. thanks. to. our. in the old days the longest opera performances could last several days today they've been reduced to three or four hours and encompass all genres from melodrama to burlesque to tragedy to circus our actors have to spend around seven hours a day on stage to make as much as a blue collar worker. but the opera is a colorful contrast to the gloom of a factory or mine and performers travel for eight months at a time making people laugh and cry all over the country. for.

4:41 pm
4:42 pm
they dream of heading back home to their villages and families the bus takes them farther and farther away each day to faraway corners in the north of the country to conquer new audiences. it's the first time the opera has ventured into this region located in between shanxi and inner mongolia where and how will they find a place to sleep will the audience turn out for their show. how many days and nights will they need to stay before continuing their journey. a trip just arrived in the neighboring village. they perform operas.
4:43 pm
i've heard they're very good would you like to go ok. all right let's see if we can convince a grandmother to join us. let's get to it we still have a bit of work to finish first and that is. did you hear about tonight show in the nearby village. i don't have money to go. so you're not going. i doubt it even if they only come once a year well then pay me what you owe me ok. let's hear we couldn't go the harvest was too poor did you go how was it. it was great really excellent well i hope i can make it this time. you know. only i know. right you're wrong.
4:44 pm
i have enough well to look old not at all but it would be good for you to have a little fun your grandson will be happy. the last time i saw or not pray or father was still alive that was a long time ago we were gone for a few days it was a long trip. come on don't stay at home. my grandson is a good boy. back again. in these parts not many people move away from their villages. but the fact that the gentry troop have stopped by in the neighboring village is a good excuse to escape every day life and go on an adventure take
4:45 pm
a break from harsh reality and opportunity to enjoy life and to experience a bit of cultural magic and beauty that is thousands of years old an opportunity to reconnect with others and come together with a community and a chance to rediscover history whether real or fantasy through splendor that will live on as long as the ginger troops continue their travels. in eastern culture the stories of our ancestors and those of modern life are inextricably linked never separated. therefore traditional chinese opera will never disappear. we give life to characters of a bygone era us of course all of this is beautified on stage to provide maximum enjoyment to help us remember our origins and those who came before us so they can remain in our memories but nothing will ever replace traditional opera it will live

think if there were a god surely he would do something about it. the rules say you may call home on christmas and one other time during the year. isn't that really tough on you. we thank you for bringing know what to us. is it's nearly seven in the morning not exactly my favorite time of day i'm meeting two young women whose day always starts at six thirty am and ends at ten thirty pm they've come to germany from the us they're missionaries for the church of jesus christ of latter day saints better known as the mormon church. they're spending eighteen months here trying to convert people. and they follow what i think are some pretty strict rules. they're not allowed visitors and definitely not male visitors so there will be chaperones at our meeting as if one should i take my shoes off we also needed to get official approval from the church to make
5:06 pm
a report on the left is sister baker on the right sister case the two in the middle are the chaperones. this is all a camera man. ok i'll just leave this here to breakfast sure. of the could idea everyone seems a bit nervous. but. i am too to be honest oh and by the way the missionaries only had six weeks of german language classes before they came here sister baker and sister case are nineteen and twenty they've been in germany a few months now while they're here they're only allowed to use their missionary names we always pray before we so that's ok with you we'll pray now. yeah sure what do i need to do. this we close our eyes.
5:07 pm
we thank you lord for what we are about to receive and we ask you to bless our food we thank you for being know what to us we thank you for our new day in the name of jesus christ amen. if you pray before every meal. i can't remember when i last tried to talk to god i'm an atheist i've never been religious so this awful is a bit strange. sister qassem sister baker spend several hours a day preparing for their mission which mainly consists of proselytizing they didn't choose to come to germany that was decided by the church headquarters in utah this guy next to me is joseph smith the founder of the church. it must be hard work. every day the mormon missionary spent about three hours studying the book of mormon. then they do language practice and then they read aloud the missionary

rules every single day but they don't seem stressed out here at least not in front of the camera. with me. thank you for everything you have given us father we thank you for the opportunities you have given us a plan and so much. it seems like they're praying all the time and to my surprise i let them write me into a second try later on. if you so much help us become more like jesus christ every day in the name of jesus christ. there are roughly sixteen million mormons worldwide though most of them are in the us about forty thousand are in germany mormons believe that after the resurrection jesus taught on the american continent.
5:09 pm
this is the book of mormon work. for mormons the book of mormon is as important as the bible the church was founded about two hundred years ago in new york. out to the rules say you may call home and christmas and one other time during the year. here for further goes with friends or family you need permission from the mission president. does miss you as president and only calling your family twice a year. isn't that really tough on you being allowed so little contact with your family in a compartment of a from you. it's really hard at the beginning but it gets easier but. we're very focused on what we're doing. so we really don't have much time to think about our families. that. give us and us we know that we'll always have
5:10 pm
our families and to me that means so so much. now that we're here on a mission we have a chance to share that message to other people. so that they also know that family is there for all eternity that family is important. and that makes us less sad about not being with our own families because we're helping others. have a mention. and so when we need it now her name is. ok. she's a member of our church. pastoral care is an important aspect of missionary work we're meeting a single mother the two young missionaries often pay home visits in general they definitely keep themselves busy mormon missionaries a ten missionaries training centers before their time abroad the two young women are good listeners and they always seem to know what to say you know. i did

something really awful i realized my mistake. and that was really hard for you know i cried like a waterfall all the time but it's interesting that since i've been able to talk about it i don't cry anymore i mean. that's when it's here and then here but when you have sinned and confessed and repented truly repented then god says ok i believe you and you can move on from god go. last year on your thought maybe even tiffany's mom. because we are about ties thanks to our savior is atonement we can be forgiven. not just for our sense. it can help when we're sad or lonely to know about the end of that life yes. jesus comfort that's right.

5:13 pm
we don't have to follow them we made the decision to. get made as we had for me they help me know how i can feel closer to god being in all of these things you can't do i can do them how do you feel about that of think it on the. child of god i would think that i mean do you see me as a center how does that work. for you one everyone since. you don't judge me. even though you're not the first person we've met to stuff. i think so v.v. how important is your faith to you. i mean. it's everything. in a way i wish i believed in god or at least was religious because i can see that people who are religious and i can see it in you have a strength it gives you direction so i actually envy you that but when i say to you
5:14 pm
i don't believe in god what would you say to me how would you start a conversation with me it's a combination of both so we. would start by asking if you believe in god and. if you said no would probably ask something else. well let's try that. and moment ok just a minute ok. so how so do you believe in god no i'm ok why not how did you come to this decision i don't know. the mullahs guns the lights or just look at all the suffering in the world. everything that's happening everything that could happen all this crap is going on and will continue when i'm dead i mean when you look at all that suffering in the world you think if there is a god and if he's almighty he would do something about it. but we know that god is our father and the teach truly loves us he loves everyone on earth he's our

learned that everyone can become answer for everyone everyone if if so it's like programming is that if we have the right mindset of course and second if we are persistent enough and why do you think that the young indonesian people don't have risk taking mindset. it's cycle. from a lot of those factors first is parents so parents still thing like if we work in the very big car for a and we have a stable job it is yeah very prestigious so our last will be very good enough but a lot of parents still have the mindset that all we cannot have failure but failure is exactly what lee. we need to learn to get better yeah just like this one like
6:36 pm
you have to configure it to robot so many times you know. and you need to fail so many of us until we find the right configuration and my parents specifically it doesn't really one need to get any failure just like on the first try but if we don't have the core interest to take risks or to have failed learned then we cannot achieve great things do you think that's because you're a woman your parents might be more critical of you being an entrepreneur than if you were a boy yeah sure sure soul is so in my position like i am the only child that's that's become harder also all soul i built my first thought until now since i was still in university. and bad then my parents think i'm crazy i'm crazy and stupid but. i want to prove them that this thing actually can be
6:37 pm
a successful spawn of. that can save more lives saul yeah there was like a lot of conflicts but. so my goal to actually solve the blood donation sure beats in the future we don't want to see any more patients are those families who are really really annie and feel suffering looking for blood donations i mean i wonder every time every second or every minute that. we have bundle blocked already a family of a. lot of blood brothers add that we
6:38 pm
started on two thousand and fifty and. so we find out that a lot of people want to donate blood but they don't know when and where if we found it a lot of people know when and where fifty percent of them are getting rejected by the red cross because they cannot pass the health check up so the numbers get smaller and smaller and that's why we never have enough blood beds every year so that's why we build a platform that actually make the information about blood donation more accessible florida blood donors. you need to be the first person and the biggest fan of yourself and of your idea and you need to be the one who should be able to defend the idea no matter what.
6:39 pm
and you should do that because that's the confidence level you need in order. to succeed because when you enter this world of entrepreneurship you have this idea nobody has done this before and you will face a lot of people who will tell you that this is not going to work out of. the. good you also have to look for investors at one point or it is that all bootstrapped in the second year we start raising fund and we start with a lot of investor yes and at that time too i already. have a baby. and yet in some point i feel that. maybe not really much but there is yes there is some incest or see me as a female phone there is and you already have

6:41 pm
pay who laid myself but i can still believe are the result because i'm still can work from home yes it's challenging sometimes i don't want to go anywhere but i have to face it and i have to very. understanding about what i'm doing and what is more the fish and. to me a feminist is a person who believes that in the end when men are created equally and i really
6:42 pm
gifted. i think every woman should be a feminist and every man should be a feminist and the perception in the world is by far i'm not there yet. so i think we need to elevate the perception of women to be equal to men and therefore we all should be feminist. like. i am proud of being a woman i like being a woman i'm not going to hide it but at the same time you need to understand what you have to say and how you have to say things in order to be heard.

i'm calling osman thanks for joining us indonesian rescue workers are searching for survivors in the aftermath of a devastating tsunami which struck a busy tourist region on saturday night the official death toll has risen to two hundred twenty two with more than eight hundred reported injured dozens more are unaccounted for the tsunami swept the coastline along the sunda straits between sumatra and java was apparently triggered by the eruption of an island volcano which sent a wall of water crashing onshore. this is the moment the tsunami hit without warning. it caused people to flee in panic. the local rock band seventeen were performing on the beach when the wave struck.
6:51 pm
in a tearful instagram message the band's front man confirmed that several members of the group had been killed and that others at the concert were missing including his own wife it seems many have not found anything to hold on to. in the light of day the scale of the damage has started to emerge. hundreds of houses and other buildings have been destroyed. by witnesses have said they were taken aback by the force and speed of the way. that water came so fast. so many people were running washed away. some were struck down. the president offered his condolences to those who have lost loved ones and asked people to be patient as the search and
6:52 pm
rescue effort gets underway. this man was freed from the rubble by emergency workers it's unclear how many people are still trapped across the island he thought the tsunami could have been sparked by underwater landslides caused by an erupting volcano. experts say this could explain why the water appeared to just come out of nowhere. teams of aid workers are trying to get on top of the situation in the disaster zone here's a spokesperson for indonesia's red cross. ok let the situation is there i'm sure still a lot of people are staying in a shelter because they are afraid to come back to come back to their home but some of their already went back to their home but they are still living in the higher ground with their families and right now i would want to tears is still doing assessments and evacuation are all also give still medical assistance. on the needs
6:53 pm
right now on the ground is that people they need to do what they need there for needs they need the blankets because they are now let out some of the about staying outside their home and also a shelter let's take a look now at what we know about this tsunami which left a trail of destruction through the region we know that the wave was powerful but it wasn't all that big only about one meter high it followed an eruption of the knock krakatoa volcano which has been especially active since june but scientists are still investigating the cause of the tsunami they suspect it could have been triggered by a landslide on the volcanoes steep slope they also say an abnormally high tide may have played a factor as well unlike tsunamis triggered by earthquakes those caused by volcanic eruptions are rare and they give agencies next to no time to issue a warning that might explain why residents were caught by surprise.
6:54 pm
earlier we spoke to stanley with dion tow he's a freelance journalist in jakarta and he talked about the situation on the ground when the tsunami hit. and he said before there was a day and playing. what i do this gentleman is one of the events happening during the night but you know when he talked to me it was it happened in the middle of it at around nine pm. yeah so there was just no warning people going are about their daily lives even even concerts happening. yeah even concerts are happening but yeah people are just going to be. you know yet there is no build up to. how about this region itself can you describe it for us i mean we understand that this is a major tourist destination. yeah to do region is around jakarta
6:55 pm
. putative beaches mainly to tell you of the sumed beach in a char you have beach are just like three to four hour drive away from jakarta website and there are popular tourist destinations. there visited by a lot of people every year and especially especially now with the peak cap he didn't got it because prince this season is rolling around so yeah so they're a popular beach for spot. now today the day after we were seeing some of the scenes of the aftermath there can you describe to me just how badly was this region hit. her that you could have been made to feel her destroyed. right if you know me but to which extent their damage. they were not clear cut maybe for you or you couldn't ship their cattle there better to target it really hard to explain how
6:56 pm
to what extent to do it you go. home of the search and rescue operation now underway how quickly were these teams able to reach the site and what's the situation going forward. on what they should do if you fear that you'd be right there pretty quickly or the fact that it's not cricket if it is a region. i just heard from oxfam. there there go there already to graduating from people over to their work work it would mean if you were to do that. let's at least a bit of good news there in that region stanley with you and so in jakarta for us thank you very much. the video of that indonesian banda seventeen beings off stage is one of the most dramatic to emerge from the disaster zone it's put a human face on this unfolding tragedy in a country that has seen far more than its fair share recently and for more on that
6:57 pm
band and its fate we're joined in the studio by william know who coughed. yeah so that dratted video that is now we've now shown on our network has been circulating all around the world it's quite it's quite the graphic image we have it here to show of as we saw in the report earlier of the band performing on stage on a beach at a year end party for the local electric company stable extra company they were just celebrating having a good time and as we can see in the video here the wave comes crashing in and. and and then the video goes black. so we we don't quite know what happened with everybody we know from the instagram post of the lead vocalist he's one of the few known survivors of the band his band mates are either confirm.
6:58 pm
or. reporting from tendril. last bassist benny and road manager hammond okie and andy. andy hammons new john haven't been found it. and we also feel chris. hopefully my wife will be found quickly. well this was safe thank god even though they broke their heads. that my wife dylan and john and herman be found quickly. you'll soon see a prayer for benny and okie. thank you. you cannot be moved by a video like that especially when you keep in mind that that is just one example of something happening now all across the region in addition to that band local media
6:59 pm

7:20 pm
because he's convinced that people who order for it if it don't just take better care of their teams. winning smile can change your whole life. a bright smile is not only beautiful it's important for your health to everybody knows that on the other hand many people are freight to go to the dentist and some of them are so fraid that they don't go at all. where does this into phobia come from. the psychologist i'm hugs emma ling is meeting with tanya galle for their first session . this is actually a dental surgery tanya is due to have work done on how teeth but first she's learning to relax. we came up with an image a sandy beach with the sun shining that's very important yes it's pleasantly warm
7:21 pm
not too hot it's a gentle breeze and what are you doing on the beach i'm just relaxing. and then we thought of something else to help strengthen the whole process. what was that. phrase that i thought of to boost my confidence. exactly and what's the phrase i'm being taken seriously. how much of a difference does this kind of thinking make this is it's these phrases are designed to support the treatment through positive thinking but it has to be tailored to the individual in the past she felt that her dentist didn't take her concerns seriously so that's why she chose this sentence which i've incorporated into our sessions with our good old. time here knows exactly where her fear of dentists comes from physics. when i was about six years old the dentist
7:22 pm
wanted to give me an injection but i said i didn't want it for people held me down while he went ahead. she's now ready to meet her new dentist who spent years working with patients who suffer from dental phobia she seems common enough. that it's often because i now feel that i'm being taken seriously i'm much more relaxed . and. she's brought her neck pillow from home which gives her something to clutch some patients bring cuddly toys everything is allowed. the dentist explains the impact the dental phobia has on his patients. i would say about eighty percent of the patients with phobia just completely ignore their teeth they don't take care of them at all anymore which results in to stick a periodontal disease or infections their teeth become loose or fall out they break
7:23 pm
off everything does and. today the dentist just wants to discuss how to progress with his new patient big grin on ways that tanya can communicate during treatment if she starts to panic for example which of course she won't be able to talk so non-verbal signs using your hand work past. i'm sitting here and working on your teeth so i can see your left hand best if you raise your hand just like that yes i'll stop immediately erica so do you think we can do this you can read yes we can. focusing on the image of the beach and how mind and in the knowledge that he or she is are taken seriously next week tanya galle she will be back for work to be done on her teeth for the first time in years. i hear it kate you sixty four but you see huge dental practice in the heart of

7:26 pm
they're really trying to keep the attributes level we choose and trigger fear in patients but there's something like this where are you different from from the normal fears a phobia is much more and we estimate that about ten percent of population have a dentist. these people avoid treatments for years sometimes for more than ten years this isn't the real big problem we have to stop the treatment very different . here before you today you can just look up the ceiling that sadly this is the t.v. screen so it's so wise that we have this t.v. above all of our treatment chairs especially very helpful for children but if this is a firm what is fitting. goes so much into this film that they attention is not any more than the mouth and we can treat them much easier well i am not

afraid of dentists but afraid of the pain the dentist calls around so what you do. now we have it in our facilities to avoid pain comp you see at the dentist that's not to need to be painful anything here we have says. if injections we have also a nice pills that give you a feeling of extreme begin to relax a little before it even so you really do need to be free but then i was going to told me to go to the right dentist so there's really no need to be afraid of the dentist anymore yes no need. no need to feel any pain at the dentist. so it's a good way when. you can focus on the cosmetic. and the right. to. do such things fight. or even bleaching.

a response we're not even twenty four hours into it yet it looks like we're going to be there for quite a while right now it is the government of indonesia which is leading the response and then of course agencies such as the indonesian red cross support that response at the moment they have deployed approach thirty volunteers and staff we are also sending in the fourteen water trucks the indonesian red cross has become somewhat of an expert in purifying and distributing water since the indian ocean tsunami back in two thousand and four so they're using that in their response here and then just their ways we and now in the current disaster response and then as you might expect people are going to need first aid they them injured there's always a lot of debris which is moving around in a disaster the force of the wave even though the wave itself was less than a metre high from what we understand at this moment it still packs a punch there's

a lot of power behind it and so we're hearing that people have not just cuts and scrapes but a lot of broken bones so the indonesian red cross is sending in twenty two ambulances fully trained medical volunteers and staff to be able to provide some of that first aid we mentioned at the beginning of our conversation the cheering pal you obviously ground zero for the devastating tsunami back in october where you were monitoring recovery efforts how we quipped would you say indonesia is to cope with yet another major natural disaster. well and we also can't forget they were also we're bonding still to a series of devastating earthquakes and lombok that occurred in late july and august so. the capacity of the country and the indonesian red cross has really grown since that indian ocean tsunami. fortunately it is a country that experiences a lot of. the ring of fire so they do get

survivors in the aftermath of a devastating tsunami which struck a busy tourist region on saturday night the official death toll has risen to two hundred twenty two with more than eight hundred reported injured dozens more are unaccounted for now the tsunami swept the coastline along the street between sumatra and java it was a privately triggered by the eruption of an island volcano which sent a wall of water crashing on shore. this is the moment the tsunami hit without warning. it caused people to flee in panic. the local rock found seventeen performing on the beach when the wave struck. in a tearful instagram message the band's front man confirmed that several members of the group had been killed and that elvis at the concert was missing including his

he thought the tsunami could have been sparked by underwater non slights caused by an erupting volcano. experts say this could explain why the water paid to just come out of nowhere. well actually i spoke with freelance journalist question. he's based in jakarta and i asked him what the situation was like for people as the tsunami struck late saturday night yeah. this is the holiday season so all of the nation and the idea it's also. been dismissed and since it's one of. beach. every. when i heard. us that it's just. the. east coast off mr. davis and us that. people are aware

thank you some official reaction to the tsunami disaster the indonesian president a joke we don't have tweeted this deep condolences for the victims in the three regions hit by the tsunami last night or did all relevant government officials to immediately take and the agency action set and find victims and treat the injured and then there is this from the german chancellor as official spokesperson american express to deepest sympathies on behalf of germany the news and images from indonesia a shocking we mourn the victims families and hope many people can be saved and the relief effort is intensifying in the aftermath of the deadly tsunami i spoke to catherine when a from the international federation of red cross she joined us from the wishes monitoring we cover the efforts of to indonesia's last major disaster and i asked what's the situation was after this latest tragedy. i have to let the indonesian
8:57 pm
red cross deployed teams of volunteers immediately after the tsunami last night they were on the ground again this morning and had the photos that they're sharing with us show why scene of devastation something you would expect to see after a tsunami but harrowing nonetheless there there's debris everywhere there are cars that are washed there are motorcycles that are crushed houses which are collapsed or partially collapsed there's just degree all over the place trees have fallen down and this is what we're trying to work and i can see you sounds like there's a lot of work which needs to go in for relief efforts how many aid with his have you been able to get a. yeah we're just starting there's a response we're not even twenty four hours into it yet it looks like we're going to be there for quite a while right now it is the government of indonesia which is leading the response
8:58 pm
and then of course agencies such as the indonesian red cross the court that response at the moment they have deployed approach thirty volunteers and staff we are also sending in fourteen water trucks as the indonesian red cross has become somewhat of an expert in purifying and distributing water since the indian ocean tsunami back in two thousand and four so they're using out in their response here in central still await me and now in the current disaster response and then as you might expect people are going to need first aid they've been injured there's always a lot of debris which is moving around in a disaster the force of the wave even though the wave itself was less than a metre high from what we understand at this moment it's still packs a punch there's a lot of power behind it and so we're hearing that people have not just cuts and scrapes but a lot of broken bones so the indonesian red cross is sending in twenty two ambulances fully trained medical volunteers and staff to be able to provide
8:59 pm
some of that first aid we mentioned at the beginning of our conversation the tearing pal you obviously ground zero for the devastating tsunami back you know to where you were monitoring recovery efforts how we quipped would you see indonesia is to cope with yet another major natural disaster. and we also can't forget they were also responding still to a series of devastating earthquakes in lombok that occurred in late july and into august so. the capacity of the country and then tunisian red cross has really grown since that indian ocean tsunami and fortunately it is a country that experiences a lot of disasters it sits on the the ring of fire so they do get a lot of earthquakes. so that that expertise has really grown exponentially since that indian ocean tsunami. kathy mueller from the international red cross in

indonesia thank you so much for making time to speak to us. four indonesian tsunami is a constant threat just part of living in a seismic region but this latest one followed an eruption of krakatoa volcano which has been especially active since june the volcanic island from the sea off to one of the largest eruptions in recorded history the legendary krakatoa more than a century ago. and i'm now joined in the studio by frederick tillman he is the head of the seismology program at the german research center for geosciences thank you for joining us today a sephardic it seems this tsunami was triggered by a volcano what do you know as the cause behind it so we're just trying to get our heads or on what what actually happened it is that this isn't a krakatoa which is located if it's just emerging above a surface of a sea has been erupting for some time and there's not
9:01 pm
a very clear seismic signal so we're just going through very carefully for records and seems there was some activity but very small we wonder if you have you can see the effects of a landslide but we have only a very big picture currently but when you think of tsunamis we always hear of warning systems once there any in this particular area so the warning systems are essentially designed to record and locate the earthquakes in terms of magnitude and then if it's a very large earthquake under the sea then it will trigger most likely a tsunami we are still not really able to get four hundred forty seven types of tsunamis which are more rare most large tsunamis of course but of quakes but occasionally events like this this tragic event that happened today where it's it does not clear seismic signal associated with it and how rare such events. there are few examples of a willing slave triggered once i mean did you model of the pole remember the quake in indonesia early in the year which was
9:02 pm
a large earthquake but the real tsunami was also most likely triggered. landslide there was a case in one thousand nine hundred eighty up on new guinea. and so these lengths to get tsunamis to occur sometimes was associated with all kind of activity ok so could anything that have been done in this situation to either prevent it. or to forecast it in advance of the current state of the art i'm afraid no of course feel already beginning to think well how could we have done better as a community of two physicists and there are some weak sick notes but maybe could have been picked up if we had had a very dense network of ocean and precious sends us then just could have also been detected but these are prohibitively expensive so there was a need to look at new technical approaches to that all right now krakatoa volcano which we've been talking about has been erupting for months now but this is the first tsunami it seems to have triggered how much danger is that that this could happen again is very difficult to say i mean i don't want to cause panic but of
9:03 pm
course it's very difficult to exclude for events it was after remembered an eight hundred eighty free krakatoa due to option and that was of course a huge tsunami of course it's not up to that i said so i think that was not not happen but. just yeah it is very difficult to to. get to pick morning you. know we've been talking about the size of the waves that that came in as being one meter high is this unusually low or high in the world all of tsunamis how does that play. i would say intermediate i mean it's not as catastrophic as these to me to hide tsunamis which you saw in japan and those in indonesia in two fours and four but it's just you know just enough to cause devastation on a local scale it's better as a song but the effect of regions that were quite close to was also. very briefly why is indonesia so prone to natural disasters whether it is on this we have this

without warning and now in the light of day the devastation is becoming clear the death toll has climbed to more than two hundred and is expected to rise or come to the rubble hundreds more are injured. thank you for joining us indonesian rescue workers a searching for survivors in the aftermath of a devastating tsunami which struck a busy tourist region on saturday night the official death toll has risen to two hundred twenty two with more than eight hundred reported injured dozens more are unaccounted for now the tsunami swept the coastline along the sun to straight between sumatra and java it was apparently triggered by the eruption of an island volcano which sent a wall of water crashing on shore. the place where someone used to live now

destroyed by the powerful way. it's just one of hundreds of homes and buildings flattened by the tsunami along the coast. the water hit with such force that it lifted cars and other vehicles. one woman spoke of the horror of the moment when the tsunami struck. and sara to the left of the i was at home watching television at the time. then i heard a rumbling sound and i thought it was the wind and the fact i open the door water came in quickly and dragged me out when i saw outside the sea was receding i decided to run and go as the water came again for the second time this is all. one thing that many of the survivors say is that there was no warning and they didn't see it coming. i feel traumatized as

people are also aware that there is an earthquake or not but that it's nobody. feel of the earthquake. and. this yellow announced one was that it wasn't a tsunami but only the high tide because it's a one but then it was revised by the office you know that it was a tsunami to go by and not by the say snake if you believe but by four canning act if you see caused by it. and. since then i don't know if someone didn't want that than two hundred and one but it's the only thing. more than if i'm fifty and you're in the they are like nine hundred out of bed in the. morning the house is also badly damaged

a very brief we've now seen the scale of the devastation you obviously have a better view of that how bad is it looking. i. i can well. first i see. what i've heard that that's what i mean it's not that big also like on the one with a little soul. but then because there is no order which means that is. all are we also then many people as i say would be in the course so i mean. tap into place and i'm swept by the by the way and are also. saved that if there is this might be. another tsunami because that's all going to be like beef right now but so hot and i just know a lot of others. question that in jakarta thank you.
9:56 pm
thank you some official reaction to the tsunami disaster the indonesian president we don't know tweeted this deep condolences for the victims in the three regions he by the tsunami last night i wanted all relevant government officials to immediately take imagine c. action such and find victims and treat the injured and this one from the german chancellor as official spokesperson angela merkel expressed how deep the sympathies on behalf of germany the news and images from indonesia a shocking we mourn the victims' families and hope that many people can be saved and the relief effort is intensifying in the aftermath of the deadly tsunami earlier i spoke to kathy mina from the international federation of red cross she joined us from palo suno with the wishes monitoring recovery efforts have to indonesia's the last major disaster and i asked what the situation was after this
9:57 pm
latest tragedy. i have to let the indonesian red cross deployed teams of volunteers immediately after the tsunami last night they were on the ground again this morning and the photos that they're sharing with us show why scene of devastation something you would expect to see after a tsunami but harrowing nonetheless there there's debris everywhere there are cars that are flash there are motorcycles that are crushed how does which are collapsing or partially collapsed there's just degree all over the place trees have fallen down and this is what we're trying to work and i can see you sounds like there's a lot of work which needs to go in for relief efforts how many aid workers have you been able to get in. yeah we're just starting there's a response we're not even twenty four hours into it yet it looks like we're going
9:58 pm
to be there for quite a while right now it is the government of indonesia which is leading the response and then of course agencies such as the indonesian red cross support that response at the moment they have deployed a boat of thirty volunteers and staff we are also sending in the fourteen water trucks the indonesian red cross has become somewhat of an expert in purifying and distributing water since the indian ocean tsunami back in two thousand and four so they're using that in their response here in central still whately and now in this current disaster response and then as you might expect people are going to need first aid they can injure there's always a lot of debris which is moving around in a disaster the force of the wave even though the wave itself was less than a metre high from what we understand at this moment it still packs a punch there's a lot of power behind it and so we're hearing that people have not just cuts and scrapes but
9:59 pm
a lot of broken bones so the indonesian red cross is sending in twenty two ambulances fully trained medical volunteers and staff to be able to provide some of that first aid we mentioned at the beginning of a conversation that you're in palu obviously ground zero for the devastating tsunami back in october where you were monitoring recovery efforts how we quipped would you say indonesia is to cope with yet another major natural disaster. and we also can't forget they were also responding still to a series of devastating earthquakes and lombok that occurred in late july and engine august so. the capacity of the country and the nation red cross has really grown since that indian ocean tsunami and fortunately it is a country that experiences a lot of disasters that sits on the the ring of fire so they do get a lot of earthquakes. so that that expertise has really grown exponentially since
10:00 pm
that indian ocean tsunami. catherine wheeler from the international red cross in indonesia thank you so much for making time to speak to us. for indonesia's tsunami is a constant threat just part of living in a seismically volatile region this latest one followed an eruption of on a cockatoo a volcano which has been especially active since june the volcanic island imagine from the c.f. to one of the largest eruptions in recorded history the legendary krakatoa more than a century ago. and i'm now joined in the studio by frederick tillman he is the head of the seismology program at the german research center for geosciences thank you for joining us today sir frederick it seems this tsunami was triggered by a volcano what do you know as the cause behind it so we're just trying to get our heads or own what what actually happened it is that this isn't a krakatoa which is volcano it's just emerging above the surface of the sea has
10:01 pm
been rotting for some time and there's not a very clear seismic signal so we're just going through very carefully for the records and since there was some activity but very small we wonder if you have you can see the effects of a landslide but we have only a very big picture currently but when you think of tsunamis we always hear of warning systems once they're any in this particular area so the warning systems are essentially designed to record and locate do you have quakes in terms of magnitude and then if it's a very large earthquake under the sea then it will trigger most likely a tsunami we are still not really able to give four names for the several types of tsunamis which are more rare most large the numbers of course of quakes but occasionally we have events like this this tragic event that happened today where it's it does not clear seismic signal associated with it and very briefly why is indonesia so prone to natural disasters whether it is on this we have this ring of
10:02 pm
fire in the pacific battles of this one here is on the indian ocean side it is a zone where one plate goes into new from ever brings up a lot of water into the system the course of volcanoes and these plates like passage of also a lot of quakes well thank you so much for dicto money from the german research center for geosciences full trying to run the helping us make sense of this disaster thank you. time now for some of the other stories making news around the world rescue teams in russia zero mountains have found the bodies of nine construction workers who were trapped inside a burning for tash mine a fire up to that today at the mine operated by a fertilizer company russia's mining industry is accident prone due to poor safety standards. another day of yellow vest antigovernment protests took place in paris on saturday french police arrested more than one hundred people following clashes at reports indicate turnout is lower than in previous weeks the government has
10:03 pm
given in to some of the yellow vests demands. lawmakers in italy's upper house have approved the government's twenty one thousand budget was passed with little time for debate provoking acrimonious scenes in the senate the european commission had rejected the budget which promised universal basic income rapt attention reform it must now be approved by the lower house of parliament before years and. and a reminder now of the top story that we're following for you rescue teams are searching for survivors after tsunami struck the coast of indonesia on saturday night killing at least two hundred twenty two people.
