but they face fierce opposition from traditional lists women among them protests are expected to continue as both sides voice their outrage. let's bring indeed abuse nimish while she is following the story for us from delhi hina misha this is such a divisive issue tell us more about some of the reactions that you've seen to the women entering the temple today well some of the moment the news broke that the women may have made history and enter the temple protests broke out across the state of law in the capital city itself clashes broke out between two different political groups than the millions in a bind the sunni in movies political party the party a party court for protests across the state and clashed with the ruling government in that state the left wing the left of communist party of india and castles

mission for some of our viewers who are not familiar with this debate explain why this is a so controversial to have women of menstruating age entered this temple well so we do understand this it's important to understand the board that this temple is dedicated to it is the temple of god and his followers consider this to be celibate this means that the men between ten and fifty years of age should not enter the stem but as it would be fighting the temple avenging it impure and disrespecting the god celibacy men in fact have been saying the women what to do what do you all thought i should themselves north want to and of the simple if they are of menstruating age but of course women rights are of runes rights activists as well as of what do you have fought for the strive supreme court have granted it but the pushback from the woodies of not just the physical they have actually challenge the supreme court ruling and the supreme court will be here in the challenge to with on

ruling that of this month. as well tracking the latest developments for us from delhi nimish i thank you very much. now six people have been killed and sixteen injured in a train accident on a bridge between two danish islands authorities say a passenger train has a truck trailer that had fallen off a freight train there were strong winds in the area at the time. the accidental occurred early in the morning on the western side of the bridge it looked like a strong storm had loosened up cargo being transported on a train belonging to the german rail operator dock shabaan debris was then ripped loose and smashed into the oncoming passenger train the police weren't able to give any further details at a press conference they held later because to force high frost on the most important thing for us was to help the passengers and crew on board we asked everyone who was on board the train to contact their next of kin. if someone doesn't have a cell phone so they should ask to use someone else's b.b.q.
3:08 pm
if. even in the meantime cell phone footage taken onboard shows some of the damage the police have now confirmed six dead and sixteen injured. at the time of the crash the bridge had been closed to car and truck traffic because of the strong winds it's there for unclear why the freight train from deutsche bahn was allowed on to the crossing considering it was also hauling trucks semi trailers. let's catch have found some other stories making news around the world parts of finland have experienced the strongest winds ever recorded in the country a powerful winter storm swept through from the north authorities have urged people to stay indoors tens of thousands of people have been without power cell phone service and transport have also been disrupted. chinese president xi jinping says it is inevitable that the self-will in island of taiwan will be reunited with china she delivered a marked speech rather marking forty years since the start of improving ties and

young she's gone. we were told we have so many of us have lost loved ones we must be strong to. rescue work at the scene continues but given the freezing temperatures and russia's year old mountains region hopes are fading to find those missing still alive. i've been here with business now and it's trying to us most prestigious infrastructure projects road initiative it's worth about a trillion dollars in proposed chinese investment to build roads railways ports and oil pipelines from beijing to berlin and make a project was launched five years ago and it's attracted a best is from all over the world including german companies all eager to get a sizeable piece of the action. the new silk road china's belt and road initiative as
3:12 pm
a source of wealth precious gems for pakistan faster processing of shipping containers in europe and cheaper energy in sri lanka everyone should benefit that's the promise delivered by the singers in this choir. chinese president xi jinping has been pushing the new silk road for the past five years more than one hundred projects have been completed along the route including high speed rail ports for container ships and fiber optic connections for faster internet access. german industrial giant siemens sees the new silk road as a major opportunity siemens has recently put up a new office in beijing focused on the new trade groups it's headed by cotton hospice he coordinates major transport projects in more than ten countries.
3:13 pm
you have different languages cultures and time zones so finding a common denominator takes some time. the smaller companies can piggyback on a major multinational like siemens says german chamber of commerce representative yet it's hit a bit on and that's because gaining access to the chinese market is challenging due to a lack of transparency. that. there's a lot of uncertainty when it comes to the silk road project to process how to apply where to apply and which ministry is responsible all of that's unclear. and chinese companies are us an advantage they are state owned or receive government supporters see success rests a loss on the new silk road he promotes the project as international summits german companies in china are also interested in the silk road what's unclear is
3:14 pm
just how much they'll benefit from this in the end you. talk about this with your correspondent in singapore how is beijing strategy seen in other asian nations. well ben initially these strategies were of course met with a lot of excitement because they presented the future business prospects as well as ease of trade but they're singing a different tune know due to some disillusionment countries like malaysia sri lanka me and ma even pakistan china's long time ally singing criticism of. misconduct as well as suspension of projects among other issues so there's some push back i guess some countries have finally bred small print what about companies that they still get to in bits. all countries in general are now more cautious as
3:15 pm
a result of all this pushback on companies likewise are facing the same situation they are shame to see negative sentiment governments are questioning whether the currencies has. seen ability and with a new waddle will take place so until then companies will be remain wary before investing too eagerly into building go initiative projects from the financial terms of both in these contracts and the debts as well some critics say a lot of beijing's built road initiative only exists on paper projects actually happened. well done in the case of of them all these and malaysia they've wrecked up enormous debt as you mentioned just to give you an example malaysia had to favor one hundred forty million dollars bit to china for a hospital project this is a fifty four million dollars bit so all of the reports of these unfavorable incidents are going to tarnish chinese china's reputation if they are not careful
3:16 pm
chances are the projects will still go on because the region does desperately need china's eagerness and money and resources but with very stringent checks and processes from here on just like japan and australia are currently practicing in the wake of all these allegations and china in most cases needs their resources thank you andre for us there in singapore what is the coming clothing another troubled italian bank sumi all right thank you ben now at twenty one thousand is off to a rocky start for netflix the streaming china has come under fire for pulling an episode of the popular comedy show patriot act in saudi arabia the reason the saudi crown prince was not amused at a joke about the killing of journalists. wherever social media editor carl naslund with us here in the studio kuhl tell us what happened is this is a comedy show it's hosted by the u.s. comedian. as you know one of his first episodes that focused on saudi arabia in
3:17 pm
particular the crown prince mohammed bin some on and is involvement allegedly in a show she's killing we actually have a clip from an episode so you kind of get a sense of what he was a here it is they look. just a few months ago crown prince mohammed bin salon aka m.p.'s was hailed as the reformer of the arab world needed but the revelations about to show his killing have shattered that image in a blows my mind that it took the killing of the washington post journalist for everyone to go on oh i guess he's really not a reformer meanwhile every muslim person you know was like yeah you know. he's the crown prince of saudi arabia. ok apparently the saudis didn't think that was very funny so the country's communications watchdog they basically forced netflix to take that episode down in saudi arabia and when news of that got out people around the world were not happy about it and here's what some people were saying in fact these are some pretty big names the executive director of human rights watch in the
3:18 pm
middle east says netflix's claim to supporter cystic freedom means nothing if it bows to demands of government officials who believe in no freedom for their citizens not artistic not political and not comedic even jamal khashoggi is former editor at the washington post speaking out here and she says when she wrote about the need for free expression in the arab world that freedom is not just about journalists it's about freedom for artists comedians cartoonists musicians activists and anyone who wants to express their views on society some though taking kind of a more nuanced view here one person saying look if they want to operate in a country they need to obey by its laws a better position for netflix would be to boycott saudi arabia altogether and that might help increase pressure for reform as for netflix it actually defended its decision in a written statement it said sue me we strongly support artistic freedom worldwide only remove this episode in saudi arabia after we received a valid legal request and to comply with local law ok so netflix in general getting a lot of flack for this but this can't be an isolated and say you know saudi arabia
3:19 pm
is really notorious from going after critics yet totally and you know essentially the saudis don't like something they'll censor it right and so overall the state of media freedom in saudi. arabia is really not very good in fact reporters without borders released this study and they write the country one hundred sixty nine out of one down on blasphemy insulting religion inciting chaos in danger and national unity mean that could mean pretty much anything and even defaming the king and maybe that was what flag that episode on the flick starts at twenty one thousand starting at rocky for not netflix but not just netflix right now it's not just netflix i mean the bigger issue here is about media censorship when it comes to these digital companies i mean they're expanding around the world i think that slick is in something like two hundred countries now so they're going to have to start prioritizing profits or freedom of speech and we saw what happened there in saudi arabia the next country potentially is vietnam just yesterday they passed their own version of this online cyber crime bill and what it would do is
3:20 pm
criminalize any criticism of the government requires tech companies to hand over use a data and user data that could be important for something like facebook so we could see more off for tarion regimes really cracking down and even censoring content like we saw in saudi arabia and write something to keep an eye on our social media editor karl naslund with us thank you so much karl now for german chancellor angela merkel twenty eighteen was one of the toughest years of her career it took her months to form a new government she faced definition from populist at home and abroad and after taking a blow in the polls she stepped down as chair of her conservative party will twenty nine thousand be any easier here's a look at what's ahead for the tour later. so far i'm going to america as gradual exit from politics appears to be going to plan but remaining chance low over the coming year won't be that easy with a whole list of potential pitfalls. in an eclipse come kavin by our america
3:21 pm
got the successor as party leader she wanted a k.-k. as she is known is a much needed ally who will help keep nichols in a party critics say. but the political comeback of merkel's former rival free to fish mats has loosened her hold on the party mats aim to join the magical cabinet has been rebuffed for now but many back his claim to power direct threat to america. europe's crunch time elections in may could also be a turning point for the stability of germany's government. if angela merkel's coalition partner the social democrats take yet another beating at the polls they may see no other way forward than withdrawing from the government that would most likely end i'm going to americans time as chancellor.
3:22 pm
those polls are expected to see a further rise of the populist right across europe an angle americal is set to feel those effects back home. here in germany the f.t. publicly closed ranks with the rightwing extremist during street protests in the eastern city of candidates last summer united by a determination to end the magical era the populist movement in germany make gain new momentum. with three eastern states going to the polls this coming autumn the a if t. will have to prove whether it can become the strongest political force in any of these states. if the far right are targeted for germany manages to replicate its general election results from twenty seventeen it could become the strongest political force in saxony defeat for the c.d.u. and yet more state elections would also be seen as
3:23 pm
a rebuke for chancellor merkel's leadership. all of those factors will also play a role in the hof time assessment of the coalition partner of america's government the social democrats wrote an exit clause into their coalition deal if they trigger that. could crash out of her last term in office. let's bring in our chief political correspondent melinda crane for more on the story hi melinda so are we going to see uncle america leading germany a year from now. very very difficult to say as you could hear in that report there are a number of different factors that will have an influence on whether she is still at the helm in a year and whether this government is still in power but the fact is there is no majority in germany at this time for a change of leadership one in three germans said in
3:24 pm
a recent poll that they would like to see uncle americal step down early but many many authors are satisfied and in fact since she handed over the leadership of her christian democratic party the conservative party to the great kind of common power her successor her own popularity has gone up in the polls and ms com combo is also quite popular among germans as a whole so for the moment at least there isn't any clear current of support for a change in government but as we heard a number of factors could pursue potato change one of the factors that's being seen as a challenge that we also saw in the report is that the rise of the far right in germany what is the government doing to tackle this. well it is very much also an issue of local politics we have three important eastern states where the a.f.d. party the right wing nationalist party is strong that will all be holding the state elections next year and many of the issues with which voters are
3:25 pm
dissatisfied are many of the issues that will be important in those states are local issues and so one of the big points that was made at the christian democratic party conference in december when they chose the new leader of the party is that it will be very important for the local chapters to tackle the issues that worry people those are issues like security the sense that the streets of many german cities are not adequately safe also issues that include migration but simple bread and butter issues as well like jobs and pensions all of those are very very important to voters in the east so certainly look to see both local and national parties focusing on those and then beyond that there will also i think definitely in the run up to the e.u. elections and also throughout this year there will be
3:26 pm
a push to stop misuse of social media including by outside forces whether it's chat bots or other forms of intervention by countries that perhaps or powers that hope to to profit from instability both in germany and in the e.u. as a whole so we've seen national legislation passed here in germany we're likely to see action in brussels that well with an aim to undermining at least that form the support for the right animal and on the international stage what it's facing angle of acol there. well germany now is has a seat in the u.n. security council and much of uncle america's new year's address focused on foreign policy issues with a very very clear call from her for multilateral solutions to complex problems and also for germany to take more responsibility as she put it now that would include also higher defense spending something that the u.s.
3:27 pm
president has been pushing hard for that certainly will also create some tensions within the government with the junior coalition partner but expect to see some movement on that issue as well all right our chief political correspondent melinda crane covering the story for us melinda thank you very much. you're watching d.w. news still to come on the program is saving lives of crime syrian refugees pardine how to rescue migrants at each but greek authorities have charged her with people smuggling. look at some of the year's most eagerly awaited movie blockbusters including director tim burton updated take on both of a classic walt disney animation. shtick those stories and much more coming up in two minutes time stay with us here and happy.

seeking safety has returned to the same island to help other people we have been deeply concerned that the humanitarians including santa and other people whom we are see i have been charged and faced this baseless charges that reschooling them jail for twenty five whole years these people smartlink this and speer now as we have studied the file on the case very slowly and come spoken to the lawyers and the family to your sorrow and shan't be there and we believe that they are completely baseless the construct helping refugees as a crime and that sense as cheating effect to their humanity the audience obviously dying to go and save lives. and i want to ask you about those charges because according to our report as we just saw you don't have to establish financial benefit as as a requirement to prove migrants smuggling so according to greek authorities sars
3:36 pm
work can be considered smuggling can you understand that perspective according to the laws that exist. i can increase this is and according to called the construct that there's no evidence whatsoever to prove that they have benefited they have constructed there's a way but there's nothing there to do use against them why do you think that is what needs to be changed or why do you think that the authorities are seeking this angle. i think the authorities know and this is not the first time that they are accusing other humanitarian people smuggling this is last year last year we have the same issue with the three spanish fire fighters from crime aid and two other suppression yours from and humanity and they have you known what you've been acquitted last summer so this is not this is a part there and not just from greece but other e.u. countries where they criminalize censor wrenched you or they did terry do so are such effect that it stops. they stop people who conduct interest you such as

sam cowie he's been following the story for us from south paulo sam good to have you with us so jarba also now has now taken office what are his first steps and one of the challenges that he's facing. well he faces many challenges of course because despite being a popular president he's also a divisive president so he will face challenges particularly in congress which is very fractured. way will also face fierce opposition. first of all we've seen mr bowles on our has in fact given responsibility demarcation of indigenous lands he has given that now to the agriculture ministry which some critics say is a little bit. proceeding the fox is in charge of the hanes house so that's one of the things that happened straight away and that was

something that he's allies in the agricultural. cool because we're very keen to happen it seems that he will move to loosen gun ownership a citizen that was on a bleak place you know the big pledge of his campaign the most important thing that he does that most people agree on the left and on the right is some kind of pension reform. that seems that he will be the most difficult because nobody wants to retire in brazil so that's going to require the police who perhaps was get that one through this and just very briefly if you if you can among those opponents how concerned are they that this shift to the right will actually threaten the country's democracy. get that say and overrule opinion all from his opponents that if you have somebody with these very hard liable thoughts area it starts even if you know people want less corruption people want less
