adi. da da da da. da da da da. audio. this is d w news live from berlin a massive hack attack here in germany hundreds of german politicians fall victim to a data breach with their private phone numbers credit card information and other data published online will have the latest on this developing story. also coming up and on certain state for dozens of migrants stuck on rescue ships off malta aid groups say conditions are deteriorating on board as e.u. officials are urging member states to let them laugh or speak to

a problem in tarion on board the german n.g.o.s see watch. democrats reclaim power in the u.s. house of representatives with more diversity and more women than ever before the first order of business ending the government shutdown without funding the president's border wall. plus he's only been president for three days but brazil's a new leader. isn't wasting any time his government has begun up the courage of officials who don't share his far right ideology will have analysis coming up. plus one of the world's great cities are the risk of losing a unique part of its identity konkani as famous neon signs have been lighting up the islands for decades but cheaper and modern alternatives are becoming more popular we need activists trying to protect hung on to neon heritage. the idea.
3:02 pm
i'm sumi someone's gotta thank you for joining us hundreds of german politicians have had their personal information hacked the stolen data includes cell phone numbers and credit card details which were posted to twitter germany security agencies are investigating but who is responsible isn't yet known and the government says the hackers targeted lawmakers at all levels. even german chancellor angela merkel has been affected the late day to includes a fax number e-mail address and several letters purported to come out of her office it's not clear if the league documents are authentic sits in flight it does say however that even if a large part of the data concerned rail fence sick experience says that in such cases falsified data may also have been mixed in. hundreds of other german politicians from every german political party were targeted by the hackers they
3:03 pm
then use to make public personal data such as phone numbers is empty fixation documents chats invoices and even photos of the children germany's justice minister cutting up bali come down the leaks as an attack on the country's democracy the left faction co-leader ceci steeply shocked. this is an actual it's an attack on the social cash in a far country i've read and heard that many artists join the list and politicians are a fact it isn't the amos obviously to create a climate of fear a climate of insecurity in our country. the leak was first discovered thursday evening however it appears the first document started appearing in december with a twitter account releasing information daily in the style offered at the end callender none of the internal documents that were released are reported to be highly sensitive at the moment there is no known suspect number two that action
3:04 pm
starts not to see for ourselves where evidentially transparent and that the mercy of such a tax debt is intolerable is calm but least so far as i know it's not the first time that german politicians have been hacked russia was sick used to facilities of cyber attacks that stole data from computers into chairman parliament in twenty fifteen and last year the german government's i t network came under a fresh attack russian hackers well let's diddley also to play. our political correspondent maximiliano kosik is following the latest updates for us max personal data here as we've heard has been leaked cell phone numbers credit card details the government spokesman has said that no highly sensitive data and leaked out what i mean by that. well there's always different categories in which you can consider data leaks or hack attacks like the suspected one that we're currently talking about the attack or the leak that we currently talking about is
3:05 pm
one that contains a lot of like a mass of data and in that is a mixture of a lot of personal data but experts have already confirmed that some of the information has been publicly available for example has been drawn from public websites such as the german parliament's website some of the information that has been supposedly leaked has come from all the leaks for example from two thousand and twelve facebook hack attack where personal data has already been leaked and some has been falsified so experts are currently looking into it and it's important to note that the original leak twitter account has already been shut down but of course there still circulation of the links that have been distributed on the internet max this is a serious breach we saw in our report also the chance are being affected what are authorities doing to deal with this well currently we know that the federal agency for information security is meeting with intelligence services the german
3:06 pm
government has also been informed and they're now launching an investigation we have it on good authority that the american services are helping on that and of course as important to note very crucial for internet users out there the links are still circulating and it's advice that you should not open them because even though it's quite tempting there seems to be information also on celebrities german celebrities but also potentially well known figures such as german chancellor angela merkel that you do not open these links because they could contain malicious software max this is not the first tack on german politicians on german government networks in recent years a russian group were suspected behind the attacks is there any indication who was behind this data leak. no there isn't the has been a quick sort of remarkable notes that it was looking like the far right party if he has not been affected from the league but now politicians of the party have come
3:07 pm
forward and said that they have been. affected too however this what it seems like this is an attack or a leak that is aimed to sort of look at like psychological warfare so personal data everybody can be affected even the most powerful people in germany and so what is different to previous leaks is that those were for example attacking critical infrastructures public services or the german parliamentary technical infrastructure and those kind of attacks the ones that have been have been previously were always attacks that were looking like for an espionage this one seems to be more of something that is like aimed at showing how easily everybody can be targeted and how everybody in germany and everywhere in the world should be taken care of their personal cyber security all right our political correspondent max me and of course you're covering the story for us thank you very much we stay in germany members of the bavarian c.s.u. party the sister party to uncle michael's conservative c.d.u.
3:08 pm
party are holding their annual meeting of the conservative c.s.u. or christian social union is holding their annual conference and they are not far from munich it's the second day of the three day event every year the party invites prominent figures to speak and this year special guest is irish prime minister leo bard carr is expected to make a speech later in the day. and he did use chief political editor michelle if you snore is covering the conference in they on for us he joins us for more michelle a good to see you tell us more about the irish prime minister's visit today. yes he's invited here in stark contrast to viktor orbán probably the european migration critic in chief who was here last year ok to hear this is a demonstration of solidarity with allah and in this tricky weeks leading up to what could be an uncontrolled bricks at an exit of the u.k. from the european union of course that crucial vote coming up in the british
3:09 pm
parliament whether m.p.'s will accept the brics it deal here this is you who is actually taking a stance that it's all the way with the irish and also sending a signal that it's on top of the political agenda because we are in the first week of the year and this is the almost traditional chance for the c.s.u. the system party of anglo-american c.d.u. party to set the political agenda an opportunity they certainly try and seize every single year michelle you are saying this is a show of solidarity with the irish prime minister the c.s.u. however has in the past shown sympathy for more euro skeptic positions even criticizing the e.u. for example for being too hard on britain in bragg's that negotiations are we seeing a shift now and why. well absolutely the not really shifting position just a couple of details to consider the varia is where germany's automotive industry is
3:10 pm
it has a lot to lose if there is an uncontrolled breck's it and this you see as you has always been the voice basically calling on german leaders not to be too tough on britain at the same time also the c.d.c. was never question the european union itself that is political consensus here in germany reaching into every bit of the forests varia as well but quite clearly the sees you as never shied away from being very critical also when it came to that greek rescue package that ran out just very recently that's also why we saw the leader of the greek opposition will cut here here in on as well of course there are elections coming up in greece as well. our chief political correspondent michelle i could not for us thank you very much. now to

rescue of the libyan coast in december this is spending reality for about fifty microns they are in limbo in the narrow confines of the two ships operated by eight organizations sea watch and c i q a peon countries have so far refused to let them disembark but mayors of several large italian cities refused to obey the country's official tough anti immigration law slamming it as unconstitutional. in naples us and other cities we apply the laws only if they conform with the constitution thus the constitution prevails are the ordinary laws for you to get people's rights are restricted according to the color of the skin by the constitution must prevail. in this official letter the majesty offered to let the watch come to the heart of naples assuring them that the refugees will be able to disembark. but according to see watch this is easier said than done official
3:14 pm
rescue centers have to assign available ports and the weather conditions are simply too bad deeply affecting the people on board. but the biggest problem is also that . the thirty two people that we have here on board know already for thirteen days. the show mental problems florence and palermo as well as several german cities have also offered the migrants refuge as more and more official to unite in solidarity with the refugees hoping creases for those in desperate need of help. well one of the rescue boats is operated by the german n.-g. o. sea watch it is just off the southern coast of malta right now and as a member of the german parliament a member of the green party here in germany he is on board right to. the crew's mission and help find a safe harbor and he joins us on the line and mr quintal thank you very much for joining us on g.w. there are concerns as we said that conditions on board are deteriorating especially
3:15 pm
for the migrants how have you found the conditions to be onboard. well thank you for having me i just think migrants just this minute and of course shows that they're on board for for two days not only when they go over they can go on land and. told to a fellow. here and they have a call but i think. they set them up to be here but there was a list you can you can. look very good shape but you know it's a shame that they have to pee on this boat for forty days mr greville how urgent do you think it is to find a safe harbor. well it's very urgent i think the european union has to come to consideration how to handle things to the thing but you have to just tell people
3:16 pm
certainly they're just trying to cheat that's the first thing for these people here but for like for the future the european governments have to come to a conclusion how they want to handle this because they'd just go or or prevent people from landing keeping him on a boat and everybody knows it's not going to last multimillion they know are refusing to take in migrants mr going to work can the ship actually go. well i think i'm a teacher i'm in the german parliament to talk to our minister of. the state of your city over you can they can come to germany that will consume lucia that's thirty three thousand german you have also helped pick two to take the refugees to take these people so they can be determined solution a quick tour of intuition but decide to try and other such
3:17 pm
a short. protests are happening now and they can they show that the governments have to work together to find a solution for people come over the mediterranean can be the task of these private organizations these n.g.o.s. they do a great job but it should be the job of the governments of europe mr greville i do have to ask you not just italy but also france other european countries have been critical of these n.g.o.s run rescue boats in the mediterranean think that encourage people smugglers to put migrants in harm's way by putting them on the boat what do you think of that perspective. well you know. i'm i'm i'm just a dry land and a lot of these people who are stranded here ought to do the refugees and i think it's a great sort of visit or read a ski trip going across the street across the street in the wintertime and i think
3:18 pm
there is there has to be a solution now for these and. it's no longer able to say that you pick up people who are lost and that's the first thing and you can to decide there has to be a solution i'm not sure it's going to be one way and that's true but it doesn't help the situation right now and i don't think very encouraged in going across the street because that's what they want to do anyway. right now going to a member of the german on the right now on board of the sea wasp rescue boat off the coast of them all to thank you so much for joining us here. ok dennis you're with business now and two thousand nine hundred ten starting off with a new chapter in the u.s. china trade dispute that's exactly what it is new chapter and not an end to the trade dispute which everyone would hope for it's been rumbling on of course since march last year and to continue well into the new year has traders on age china

says u.s. representatives will visit beijing on monday for two days of talks to try easing trade tensions president donald trump and his chinese counterpart xi jinping at agreed to hold traditional tariffs as of december the first you agree that lasts ninety days while the two nations work out a more permanent solution the negotiations will start by focusing on steel agricultural products and cars so far hundreds of billions of dollars worth of materials and merchandise have been affected by reciprocal tarps. and the talks to come with some urgency fears of a cooling global economy are becoming real inflation in the eurozone has dropped to its lowest level in eight months consumer prices rose just one point six percent year on year in december fall short of the european central bank's target of two percent analysts blame a slump in oil prices in the final months of last year but inflation in the eurozone has been stubbornly low for years now prompting the e.c.b.
3:20 pm
to keep interest rates at historic lows. let's talk about all of this with our financial correspondent in frankfurt and we keep hearing about fear is of a slowdown are we going to actually see a slowdown twenty ninety. from. well buying just as the european central bank winds down its assets purchasing program we're seeing some discouraging figures especially from december i'm not going to make a personal prediction but i can tell you what the comments are saying and some of them are saying that one of the worst things we have to fear is fear itself if we worry too much too much about unjustified things and we might just worry ourselves into a into a recession because we're spending too little so looking at these data that we've seen what we have here is headline inflation that includes energy prices and it's a very volatile goes up and down while core inflation is stable the manufacturing
3:21 pm
numbers that we've seen include in december the protests in france also negative of course we have negative things happening like the trade dispute but we also got to be careful not to let that way down to have really if you say you got the numbers down what you're saying is this is all psychological what about the trade school next week what's the likelihood of result there because i'm sure a lot of that is also very psychological. a lot of that is very psychological and donald trump has just lost a lot of leverage because apple came out the one big brand that stands for america you know that has been successful in the past years just came out saying you know this trade trouble that you're creating it's actually hurting us and so that is a lot of leverage john similar situation in the in the chinese economy that's also not fairing very great so there is an incentive to get back to the table not that

there is any breakthrough expected on the vice minister a level for this meeting next week but the incentive is certainly higher than before as inputs thank you very much. a japanese court says it will hold a hearing into the case of next tuesday after lawyers for the former chairman requested an explanation for his detention has been locked up in turkey. arrested him in november charges of financial misconduct. carlos ghosn has been behind bars in this tokyo prison for the last six weeks japanese prosecutors accuse the former nixon boss of financial misconduct the specific accusations against him include under reporting his salary for years enabling him to avoid paying tax on. using company money to pay for personal expenses and shifting seventeen million dollars worth of his own losses on to nissen go on

hundred seventy of the nineteen thousand containers the vessel had been carrying fell overboard. over the years the size of cargo ships and their capacity has increased significantly when accidents happen the containers often end up washed ashore that was the case for the cargo on board the m.s.c. though it too some twenty containers have so far been washed up on dutch and german shores three of the containers lost by the m.s.c. though we are said to contain peroxide a potentially harmful chemical. there are no official figures showing how often accidents like this happen but some experts estimate that as many as ten thousand containers fall overboard every year. to see me and i call it city might be losing part of its unique identity and we're talking about hong kong course it's famous for its neon signs they've been lighting up rows of shops and restaurants on

very strong measures in their action of his from the cities and for instance the minister of agriculture now will be responsible for the my cation of indigenous lands for the management of forests the minister of environment would only. have no political power basically the ministry of education has abolished the secretary for diversity which have fought for gender class racial equality. the ministry of women family. and human rights has said that boys should dress blue and girls should dress think and gender ideology will be fought against some more conservative measures were seen being taken already you're saying yes we could say that in the social area it's like it's a very strong moral crusade against most social movements progressive movements

where we can see already the economic reforms coming up so it's a cultural no liberal direction as well what do you think this means for personal democracy i think that it's going to be hard to test though i think the democratic institutions have already failed in allowing such a figure to reach office as. and i think that the hardest test will be to pass no liberal reforms such as the pencil reform and the minister for infrastructure has announced a very large providers ation program. affecting transport energy and bank the banking system so we have to see how the parliament will collaborate with his government or not it sounds like you are concerned what about a brazilian so this is a deeply divided country how does this new leader unite the country under him. i

think what he's announced measures must keep which we can expect more inequalities more social inequalities racial inequality gender inequality is if he were only contribute to even more divisions in the historical. fragmentation the country will only be missed you just couldn't expect that those affected by his measures would then unite themselves in solidarity but not that he will be able to do so i think you contribute to further the visions in the country so you see the country might be even more divided brazil does have democratic institutions what about the role of opposition who can fight and challenge both sonars power i think the the the political opposition is still trying to figure out how to what's their role in this new. in this new regina it's everything is sort of no one can guess what what's happening and they are trying to unite in

invest in the workforce and on materials but nowadays with high taxation and banks that explosions we don't make the same profits anymore there's no lack of work it's the taxes that are killing entrepreneurship they're too high with acid. basically slow economic recovery since the financial crisis still weighs on entrepreneurs some say they're tired of living under the e.u.'s strict fiscal rules. and i still think that the e.u. is a good thing. but in asking too much of a silly i don't see this is a good thing. but leaving the e.u. i don't know. despite growing disaffection with the e.u. most entrepreneurs would prefer to stay in the common marcus. i believe that the problem with the e.u. is the one size fits all rules from member states but we're all in different situations we need more flexibility to different situations of every state need to
