well you. this is g.w. news live from berlin tonight an emergency meeting of germany's cyber defense agency is called after the data of hundreds of politicians and public figures is released online private phone numbers documents and credit card details have been published on twitter was this the work of a foreign power or someone inside germany so far there are no leads also coming up fifty migrants on the ship but not allowed to disembark in europe tonight we'll talk to the mayor of an italian city who says migrants are welcome in his town.
9:01 pm
it's good to have you with us it is one of the biggest data breaches ever in germany it happened last month and only now are we learning about the personal details of hundreds of german politicians was stolen and published on twitter in the form of an admin's calendar in december today an emergency meeting of the country's cyber defense agency was called and there remain unanswered questions what we do know is that lawmakers from every political party were targeted every party except the far right. the data breach goes right to the top german chancellor angela merkel veit information includes a fax number email addresses and several less is purported to be from her office and it's not just the chancellor. has done personal data. documents from
9:02 pm
hundreds of politicians and public figures were published on the internet internet for if unleashed would. based on the first analysis politicians and officials from all levels were affected from the european parliament the german parliament means regional state parliaments and local officials of cornell in mind that. politicians from every german political party were targeted except the right wing populist. the leakers used twitter to publish personal data such as phone numbers identification documents charts invoices and even photos of their children just as minister cancer in a ballet said the leak was a deliberate attempt to damage faith in the country's democracy the left parties call for a full investigation. of the it's an attack on the social cohesion of our country i've read and heard that many artists journalists and politicians are affected. the aim is obviously to create a climate of fear
9:03 pm
a climate of insecurity in our country. the leak was first discovered as the evening but it seems the first documents started appearing in december with a twitter account releasing information daily in the style of an advent calendar none of the internal documents that were released a thought to be highly sensitive at the moment there's no known suspects or any clear motives. let's not kid ourselves there's no such thing as personal privacy and we're all vulnerable to attacks like this but they need to be stopped before aside this isn't the first time german politicians have been hacked in twenty fifteen russia was accused of a series of cyber attacks that stole data from computers in the german parliament and last year the german government's i teen network came under a fresh attack russian hackers were also blamed for that. i'm joined here to be
9:04 pm
table now by our political correspondent reviewer of auld rupert we want to make sure that we get this right the government saying that no sensitive data was taken or published right what does that mean means in the end that no data was published that could breach national security most of the data we have seen today in a flick through this morning and will some of it because as a whole mass of it most of it's private content it's cell phone numbers it's picture is it's chat protocols from facebook and what's up and and other social media channels. could go as far as some real estate contract account details of politicians but not only polluters and but also public figures as artists songwriters and other people so this means that that's a reason sensitive for national security but could be quite sensible information for the personal people don't you have private information it could be embarrassing for some people i guess specifically it happened a month ago i mean it's been on the internet what for four weeks so why did it take
9:05 pm
why are we just finding out about it after that the one big question everyone is asking right now and we have learned that the national defense unit is holding a special meeting no of these moments everybody is thinking well what happened you know what why didn't you learn of this this information has been tough since the first of december every day a little bit bored a little bit more from the twentieth of september political figures within this information and the reason we found out about this is not as the national security services found out and told us about it no it was a petition. to call from a stranger on my cell phone and this number was secret how did that come out and then other journalists and other public figures when to the police and said well there's some some information on me in the internet something normal people should know why is it there and that will. only the the moment when the government learned
9:06 pm
we have really big problem that is amazing and the government or the security agencies they've dealt with cyber attacks before what is being said about possible suspects right now well it is early days now it's all speculation of course but what we have seen in the polls of the many fingers have been pointing towards russia and the possibly three years ago there was a big cyber attack on the german parliament which is to much of the information that book was pulled away then is said to have gone to russia there was a russian hacker group that was made responsible for this and we have seen another side cyber attack just last year again all the fingers pointed and then to russia right now many say well is it just coincidence that the parties the only political party in germany. doesn't have any it is not affected at all we talked to the party and they said well it is a mere coincidence a lucky coincidence for us probably house to do that we are rather young party and most of the information that has been published so far as well the old information
9:07 pm
well many say. nevertheless the finger is pointed to right wing association right now what we concert for sure would be to vote as always robert thank you you're welcome. here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world police have carried out a major operation in the german city of cologne after shots were fired in the city center no one is reported to have been injured and one man has been arrested police are looking for three others who fled the scene local media reporting the russian man has connections to the local biker scene authorities in sweden have cleared a patient with a suspected case of ebola tests showed that the man was not infected with ebola as previously feared doctors said that the man had shown serious symptoms and had recently returned from burundi foreign ministers from across the americas have met in the peruvian capital lima they issued a statement that we not to recognize the recent reelection of been its way then
9:08 pm
president nicolas maduro who by the way was not in attendance the so-called lima group said it would consider further joint means to restore democracy in venezuela and stop the outflow of refugees a palestinian television station says its offices in gaza have been ransacked a group of men broke in and destroyed cameras and broadcasting equipment and stations supports the fatah party of president mahmoud abbas they blamed the raid on the hamas group this follows increasing tensions between the two rival parties in the palestinian territory. and the united states congressional leaders have met with president trump at the white house for another round of talks over the government shutdown now in its fourteenth days so far they've agreed to more talks over the weekend democratic leaders are refusing to give in to trump's demand for billions of dollars to fund the u.s. mexican border wall and the president isn't conceding either a reporter asked him if he is prepared to shut the government for a year over funds for the wall here's what he said. i am prepared and i think i can
9:09 pm
speak for republicans in the house and republicans in the senate they feel very strongly about having a safe country having a border that makes sense without borders i've said it many times we don't have a country i hope it doesn't go on even beyond a few more days it really could open very quickly. and meanwhile two democratic congressmen have begun the process of attempting to impeach president draw they have the support of high profile new congresswoman rushy batali who called the president a bully and used an expletive to refer to him however the democratic leader leadership doesn't support impeachment at least not why now speaker nancy pelosi says only consider trying to remove trump once an investigation into his campaign's alleged russian connections is complete. back here in europe in

malta there are concerns over the health of dozens of migrants stranded on board two german rescue ships now they were picked up in the last two weeks but authorities in valetta every fuse to allow them to disembark earlier one of the migrants and had to be rescued again after jumping over the side of the boat in attempting to swim to shore the incident happened while several german members of parliament were on board the ship one by the german in g.o.c. watch and we're going to talk to a spokeswoman from that organization in a moment but first this report. imagine being stuck on a boat in such rough seas not knowing well you'll go next since there dramatic rescue of the libyan coast in december this has been the reality for about fifty migrants they are in limbo in the narrow confines of the two ships operated by eight organizations see watch and see i q a p n countries have so far refused to let them disembark but mayors of several large italian cities refused to obey the
9:11 pm
country's official tough anti immigration law slamming it as unconstitutional. in naples says and other cities we apply the laws only if they conform with the constitution thus the constitution prevails are the ordinary laws to get people's rights are restricted according to the color of the skin by the constitution must prevail. and this official letter to majesty offered to let the watch come to the harbor for naples assuring them that the refugees will be able to disembark. but according to see watch this is easier said than done official rescue centers have to assign available ports and the weather conditions are simply too bad deeply affecting the people on board. but the biggest problem is also that. the thirty two people that we have here on board know already for thirteen days. the
9:12 pm
show mental problems florence and palermo as well as several german cities have also offered the migrants refuge as more and more official to unite in solidarity with the refugees hoping creases for those in desperate need of help. joining me here at the big table now is alina she's from st watch it's good to have you on the show. previously been aboard c watch three of us one of the two ships that are now stuck off the coast of malta is the ship a quick. to take care of so many people for so long the sea watched me as a very well equipped best to ship we can conduct rescues bring people to the coast as part of safety but what we are witnessing right now at the moment is that we don't get any point of safety assigned by european stage which means to be already stuck at sea for now fourteen days and we're not a cruise i mean once went on the mediterranean and yes we can keep them alive sure
9:13 pm
. but it's just not a state where we can ensure the wellbeing of the people who are what is the order was the condition of the people on board right now well i. must imagine they come from libya war they come week they come on the rest and they come traumatized and right now we of course took care of them and so far the situation is stable on board. because the fear that we're going to have a really traumatized nation actually is really high and we have to keep them under attack because of the bad weather and you have one today where you were one of these migrants jumped off of the ship and there are critics of your your organization who say that your presence there is only making it worse that if you weren't there you wouldn't have the numbers that you have of people risking their lives to get to europe what do you say to that. first point is just a logical one when we started our operations in two thousand and fifteen we were actually responding to an incredibly high death rate so how can we be the source of
9:14 pm
something we are responding to aside from the fact that there are no empirical evidence that we are actually you know dragging these people out there and i mean look at libya. they don't you don't risk your life at sea unless the sea is safe the land and the land is libya where they're coming from and whether fleeing from it is a failed state yeah yeah detention centers i called concentration camp like so everyone would flee earlier we spoke to the mayor of palermo in society sicily and he's one of several italian mirror says that he would welcome the rescue ships i want you to listen to a clip from what you have to say. parco palermo's a corporate lawyer the migrants in this hope and against the talent government are always just. leaving something like intolerance fight against the magazines and i wish to say to him daily
9:15 pm
contact with the people in these he watch just to say a mauser that icky and to say that we welcome everybody. no it's nice that he says that but the reality is he has to abide by a tell you law he can't let the those passengers disembark so how do you read that our politicians doing things like this to make political capital on the suffering of migrants i can imagine that there are politicians doing that but in this case we were incredibly happy about this message because of course we know that we can't go there because we first of all would have to go miles and miles and leave the shelter such thing right now in front of malta. but actually these mayors and these sort of devotees sit is that they have all of europe at the moment those defending human rights in europe and to actually showing that this at least something like european solidarity and if not ninnis as an interior doing that at least and the
9:16 pm
society at doing that and because you do have european countries that are blocking access right now is see what's going to be able to continue its work because we also deeply buried how we can continue our work i mean what we're facing right now is just a european union who is not able to find a solution for the situation where people drowning at two european bodice right. so we are hoping to find a quick european solution and one that is quicker than fourteen days so it cannot be a case to case this is a decision every time we are rescuing people and has to be one solution for every time we are say to people. with see watch we appreciate you sharing your story coming in tonight it's an important story thank you now to ski jumping japan's rio you kobayashi has continued his dominance at the four bills to
9:17 pm
be followed up his two victories in the german rounds with another success in the austrian ski resort of innsbruck the omens are good for kobayashi ten of the previous eleven jumpers to win the turn of its first three rounds went on to claim the overall title. rio you kobayashi is standing on the verge of a four hills grand slam and in spirit like he had twice this tournament already the japanese jumper launched himself into first place he won with the two biggest jumps of the day as he aims to become just the third man to claim a tournament clean sweep. only stefan kraus came anywhere close to kobayashi austria's double world champion back on form on home snow after two people rounds in germany the office it was true some marcus ice in the german had to second place finishes to his name coming into this round but he could only manage thirteen thousand in spirit and now trails by more than forty five points a role equivalent to around twenty five meters in distance the tournament wraps up
9:18 pm
on sunday as well as winning the grand slam kobayashi could become the first japanese jumper in twenty one years to claim the four hills crown. manchester city beat title rivals liverpool two one in the premier league's top of the table showdown on thursday the game pitted former bundesliga coaches. against each other late in the first half city's sergio aguero knocked in a goal the put liverpool under pressure but the visitors responded in the second half brazilian striker. tying the game of the hour mark in the seventy fourth minute the boy standing got the winner to move manchester city within four points of league leaders liverpool let's hear what the coaches had to say after the game if he was it would spin cycle and both teams play to win. and nothing so is not the final it was a final four as it was in today was on this all and when today we already know the

premier league has every right tie again to the top in the future to relax rest because in three days we have another big test and if a cup. quite often that two inmates lighting tech lives and blocks in their own six out books that doesn't happen too often for a cd i would say so that's a big that the credit to my boys that we did that but in the end we lost it and we have to take the take that some of us came in last in our life and from that point of view. it's not really cool but it's one of the three results they could have happen it's with the one we didn't like but still have to take it so no let's keep a moon. or see his eyes with a cap on our brushes anti-doping lab has failed to meet an end of year deadline for submitting data to the world anti-doping agency want to and this was a condition of the ban of the lab being lifted now sports bodies and athletes are pushing for want to reimpose those sanctions. the world anti-doping agency wada is
9:20 pm
again under scrutiny the criticism first flared up in september following its surprise decision to reinstate recess under the condition that the russian agency provide access to data by year's end while this handling of the scandal and lax response to russia missing that deadline has sparked anger among athletes in anti-doping agencies and as you know it is a joke and frankly in the barest minutes for all of us not just water themselves but all of us who are in the global fight to protect clean athletes because you know athletes are wondering what the world is going on i'm after time after time after time there's a lot of talk but no action criticism has an only come from outside of what is rain the anti doping agency's own athlete committee and waters vice president who voted against the september reinstatement expressed their disappointment with the agency's response to the situation it was suspended in two thousand and fifteen
9:21 pm
following a report from wada investigator richard mclaren which concluded that widespread doping by russian athletes was state sponsored shortly before missing the deadline the head of the agency made a plea to russian president vladimir putin. as we were on the edge of a new pair and i asked president putin to protect the present and future of clean sport present and future generations of athletes. critics want risotto to be banned immediately for failing to comply with the conditions outlined in september twenty eighth what is compliance review committee will meet in montreal and generate fourteenth and fifteenth so a final course of action could be determined then. are held as you know with biz wall street volatility no sign of abating now that's five percent of the new year way down we're back up again how long it will last brant is anyone's guess but nevertheless wall street stocks off to a monthly labor market report showed that some three hundred twelve thousand jobs have been added to the u.s. economy that was in the month of december and now those figures far outweight.

expectations investors were also feeling upbeat off the federal reserve chairman jerome towel implied there were no imminent plans for further interest rate hikes he also said that he had no intention of resigning over the fed's previous decisions to increase rates despite facing fierce criticism from u.s. president donald trump. meanwhile here in germany unemployment has reached an historic low the german jobs report released today shows that the u.s. closed with a less than five percent of the country on employed cerate that has been reported since one nine hundred ninety one. rarely has it been easier to get a job in germany anyone who has the proper training and fluent language skills is likely to find what they're looking for. the latest jobs report marked the lowest unemployment rate in decades and a considerable improvement over the past five years in two thousand and fourteen
9:23 pm
the unemployment rate was six point seven percent dropping last year to an average of only five point two percent. the rate in december even dropped below five percent a level economist consider full employment that means the greatest number of skilled and unskilled employees available are active in the workforce and the demand for skilled workers remains high with nearly eight hundred thousand jobs still waiting to be filled. or christmas has come again for those living along the dutch coast toys furniture and t.v.'s have been washing up on beaches often a cargo ship lost many of its containers and some of it dangerous goods. as almost four hundred meters long the m.s.c. zoe is one of the biggest cargo ships in the world this footage from the dutch coast guard shows containers becoming dislodged before tumbling into the sea. two hundred seventy of the nineteen thousand containers the vessel had been carrying

fell overboard. over the years the size of cargo ships and their capacity has increased significantly when accidents happen the containers often end up washed ashore that was the case for the cargo on board the m.s.c. zoe two some twenty containers have so far been washed up on dutch and german shores. three of the containers lost by the m.s.c. zoe are said to contain peroxide a potentially harmful chemical. the number of containers lost at sea is difficult to ascertain the world shipping council says the number is about sixteen hundred per year but others say could be as high as ten thousand. now just before the holiday season roy managed to clinch a budget deal with brussels that will avoid disciplinary steps against italy but doubts over the italian economy continue and many italians are growing tired of the a use fiscal policy so we went to northern italy to hear some of the opinions of

most entrepreneurs would prefer to stay in the common marcus'. political problem other i believe that the problem with the e.u. is the one size fits all rules from member states but we're all in different situations we need more flexibility to different situations of every state need to be taken into account that we think that your new play is a. great company produces sparkling wine exports to the e.u. account for thirty percent of sales. it's a pity our all here is mine and i hope our politicians will think of companies out of those of us who don't want to leave the european union. will see that the italian government has backed down in its budget standoff with the e.u. but until the country finds a way to boost its economy more confrontations can be expected. christmas is well and truly behind us you might be wondering what happens to all the christmas trees that don't get sold here in berlin unwanted christmas trees are
