this is. an emergency meeting of germany's cyber defense agency is called after the data of hundreds of politicians is released online private phone numbers documents and credit card details have been published on twitter was this the work of a foreign power or someone in germany so far there are no leads it's also coming up

shifty migrants on a ship but not allowed to disembark in europe and i will talk to the mayor of an italian city who says the migrants are welcome in his town. good to have you with us it is one of the biggest the data breaches ever in germany it happened last month and only now are we learning about it the personal details of hundreds of german politicians were stolen and published on twitter in the form of an advent calendar today an emergency meeting of the country's cyber defense agency was called and there remain many unanswered questions what we do know is that lawmakers from every political party were targeted from every party except the far right. the data breach goes right to the top german chancellor angela merkel victa information includes a fax number email addresses and several less. it is purported to be from her
10:02 pm
office and it's not just the chancellor resume his personal data and documents from hundreds of politicians and public figures were published on the internet internet for family. based on a first analysis politicians and officials from all levels were affected from the european parliament the german parliament means regional state parliaments and local officials of cornell in mind that. politicians from every german political party were targeted except the right wing populist a f d the leakers use twitter to publish personal data such as phone numbers identification documents charts invoices and even photos of their children justice minister cancer going to said the leak was a deliberate attempt to damage faith in the country's democracy the left parties called for a full investigation. is this. an attack on the social cohesion of our

country i've read and heard that many artists journalists and politicians are affected. the aim is obviously to create a climate of fear a climate of insecurity in our country. the leak was first discovered thursday evening but it seems the first documents started appearing in december with a twitter account releasing information daily in the style of an advent calendar none of the internal documents that were released a thought to be highly sensitive at the moment there's no known suspects or any clear motives. it's not stock let's not kid ourselves there's no such thing as personal privacy and we're all vulnerable to attacks like this but they need to be stopped at the far side and this isn't the first time german politicians have been hacked in twenty fifteen russia was accused of a series of cyber attacks that stole data from computers in the german parliament and last year the german government's i t network came under
10:04 pm
a fresh attack russian hackers were also blamed for that. and i'm joined here the behavior now by our political correspondent reviewer of auld rupert we want to make sure that we get this right the government saying that no sensitive data was taken or published right what does that mean means in the end that no data was published that could breach national security most of the data we have seen today in a flick through this morning and some of it goes as a whole most of it most of it's private content it's cell phone numbers its picture is it's shot protocols from facebook and what's up and and other social media channels. could go as far as some real estate contract account details of politicians but not only put it is but also public figures as artists songwriters and other people so this means that's a reason sensitive for national security but could be quite sensible information for the personal people don't you have private information it could be embarrassing
10:05 pm
to some people i guess specifically and it's it happened a month ago i mean it's been on the internet what for four weeks so why did it take why are we just finding out about it and that's the big question everyone is asking right now and we have learned that the national cyber defense unit is holding a special meeting know at the moment everybody is thinking well what happens you know what why didn't you learn of this this information has been puffed since the first of december every day a little bit boy a little bit more from the twentieth of september political figures within this information and the reason we found out about this is not as the national security services found out and told us about it no it was a petition. got a call from a stranger on my cell phone and this number is secret how did that come out and then other journalists and other public figures when to the police and said well there's some some information on me in the internet something normal people
10:06 pm
shouldn't know why is it there and that was only. the moment when the government learned we have really big problem that is amazing and the government or the security agencies they've dealt with cyber attacks before what is being said about possible suspects right now well in his early days now it's all speculation of course but what we have seen in the polls of the many fingers have been pointing towards russia and the possibly three years ago there was a big cyber attack on the german parliament building just much of the information that house was pulled away then is said to have gone to russia there was a russian hacker group that was made responsible for this and we have seen another side cyber attack just last year again all the fingers pointed and then to russia right now many say well is it just coincidence that the a of d. parties the only political party in germany. doesn't have any it's not affected at all we talked to the party and they said well it is a mere coincidence
10:07 pm
a lucky coincidence for us of the probably house to do that we are rather young party and most of the information that has been published so far as well the old information well many say. nevertheless the fingers pointed to right wing us is right now what we concept for sure we would be to vote as always robert thank you you're welcome. talks are set to continue this weekend between u.s. president and congressional leaders over the government shutdown which is entering its third week democratic leaders are refusing to give in to trump's demand for billions of dollars for a mexican border wall trump says he's prepared to keep parts of the government shutdown for months or even years he's also considering declaring a national emergency to get the wall constructive more than eight hundred thousand federal workers remain furloughed and there is no guarantee that they will ever be paid. for from a real shutdown to a possible impeachment to members of the u.s. congress have begun an attempt to impeach u.s.
10:08 pm
president drop they have the support of high profile new congresswoman where she batali she has called the president a bully and she's used an expletive to refer to her however the democratic leadership does not support impeachment at least not why now speaker nancy pelosi says only consider trying to remove trump once an investigation into his campaign's alleged russian connection is going to an. aid workers say that the health of nearly fifty migrants stuck on ships off the coast of malta is deteriorating the migrants were rescued within the last two weeks but malta italy and spain are refusing to let them disembark activists say many are suffering severe sea sickness brought on by rough seas and heavy weather. imagine being stuck on a boat in such rough seas not knowing well you'll go next since their dramatic rescue of the libyan coast in december this is spending reality for about fifty

migrants they are in limbo in the narrow confines of the two ships operated by eight organizations sea watch and c i q a p n countries have so far refused to let them disembark but mayors of several large italian cities refused to obey the country's official tough anti immigration law slamming it as unconstitutional. in naples us and other cities we apply the laws only if they conform with the constitution thus the constitution prevails are the ordinary laws. people's rights are restricted according to the color of the skin the constitution must provide. and this official letter to majesty offered to let the watch come to the heart of naples assuring them that the refugees will be able to disembark. but according to see watch this is easier said than done official rescue centers have to assign available ports and the weather conditions are simply too bad deeply affecting the

people on board. but the biggest problem is also that. the thirty two people that we have here on board already for thirteen days. show mental problems. florence and palermo as well as several german cities have also offered the migrants refuge as more and more official to unite in solidarity with the refugees hope increases for those in desperate need of help. during the year the big table now is she's from sea watch it is good to have you on the show. previously been aboard see watch three of us one of the two ships that are now stuck off the coast of malta is the ship equipped to tape. here of so many people for so long the sea watched me as a very well equipped best to ship we can conduct rescues few can bring people to the coast as part of safety but what we are witnessing right now at the moment is
10:11 pm
that we don't get any point of safety assigned by european stage which means to be already stuck at sea for now fourteen days and we're not a cruise i mean it's went on the mediterranean and yes we can keep a life show. but it's just not a state where we can ensure the wellbeing of the people who bought it what is the word was the condition of the people on board right now well i. must imagine they come from libya war they come week they come on nourished and they come traumatised and right now we of course took care of them and so far the situation is stable on board. but we don't know for how long because the fear that we're going to have a really traumatized nation actually is really high and we have to keep them under attack because of the bad weather and you have one today where you were one of these migrants jumped off of the ship and there are critics of you or your organisation who say that your presence there is only making it worse that if you
10:12 pm
weren't there you wouldn't have the numbers that you have of people risking their lives to get to europe what do you say to that. first point is just a logical one when we started our operations in two thousand and fifteen we were actually responding to an incredibly high death rate so how can we be the source of something we are responding to aside from the fact that there are no empirical evidence that we are actually you know dragging these people out there and i mean look at libya. they don't you don't risk your life at sea unless the sea is safe and the land and the land is libya where they're coming from and whether fleeing from that is a failed state yeah yeah detention centers i called concentration camp like so everyone would flee earlier we spoke to the mayor of palermo in society sicily and he's one of several italian mayor says that he would welcome the rescue ships i want you to listen to a clip from what you have to say. darko palermo was
10:13 pm
a corporate lawyer of the migrants and his hope and against in the telling government that was adjuster leading something like it intolerant fight against the magazines and i wish to say to him daily contact with the people in his he watch just to say a mauser that icky and to say that we welcome everybody. no it's nice that he says that but the reality is he has to abide by it tell you what we can't let the those passengers disembark how do you read that or politicians doing things like this to make political capital on the suffering of migrants i can imagine that there are politicians doing that but in this case we were incredibly happy about this message because of course we know that we can't go there because we first of all would have to go miles and miles and leave the shelter searching right now in front of malta. but actually these mayors and these sort of devotees sit is that they have all over
10:14 pm
europe at the moment are those who are defending human rights in europe and to actually showing that this at least something like european solidarity and if not ministers of interior doing that at least may and the society are doing that and because you do have european countries that are blocking access right now is see what's going to be able to continue its work because we are also deeply buried of how we can actually continue our work i mean what we're facing right now is just a european union who is not able to find a solution for the situation where people drowning at two european borders right. so we are hoping to find a quick european solution and one that is quicker than fourteen days so it cannot be a case to case this isn't a decision every time we are rescuing people and used to be one solution for every time we would say to people. with see watch over there we appreciate you sharing
10:15 pm
