and so watch the language of. speaking the truth global news that matters g.w. made for mines. this is news live from berlin a massive cyber security breach rocks the german capital as data from hundreds of politicians and public figures is released online private phone numbers documents and credit card details were published on twitter last month victims want to know why it took until yesterday for them to be informed also coming up donald trump

raises the stakes in his showdown with democrats saying the two week old government shutdown could go on for months or even years unless he gets money to build his mexican border. i'm carl kasell and welcome to the program german authorities say berlin needs to step up its online defense in the wake of a massive hacking attack the head of germany's cyber security council said the leak of personal information from hundreds of german politicians and celebrities shows it must be quicker to detect breaches and track down attackers the data was published in december now many of the victims are asking why it took so long for them to be informed. for german m.p. florian post finding out that his credit card information and private chats were available for all to see is a digital nightmare turned reality. this is

a. very nice feeling knowing that your most private. insurance information. on the internet and it anybody anywhere in the world. experts call it docs ing publishing sensitive information to violate victim's privacy online the link has been deactivated but not before data involving hundreds of politicians and celebrities were shared via twitter the data was leaked in daily batches throughout december all germany's political parties were affected except the far right f.t. . i don't think we're dealing with an army of professional hackers here it looks like someone was snatching data over a long period and looking to steal passwords. the breach was discovered by former us leader martin schultz who received calls from strangers on his private
9:03 am
telephone number and reported it to police. chancellor merkel was briefed on the matter but many lawmakers first learned of the mass hacking from the media. and what i heard shocked me this is a grave attack on democracy in our country. there are massive problems in the digital security architecture we put tensions haven't looked off as enough in recent years the government has crossed and neglected that . we have to take action this is a turning point. and this will findings suggest no politically compromising data has been leaked still the government says it is a serious case and that almost all security agencies are involved in the investigation good come on you can't really make money off this since the data have been made public so there's limited blackmail potential we used to speak of hacktivism but we'll see what all the investigation turns up.
9:04 am
it's not yet clear what authorities knew when should bomb says his agency had become aware of the security breach in december and contacted individual lawmakers but not florian post he only found out late thursday after a call from his political party so far he's had no word from security officials even though he's among the politicians most affected by the hacking. maximally on the kosik has been tracking this story for us he joins us now in studio max as we heard there german authorities they've known about this for weeks i mean why didn't they make this public sooner well one. claimer one accusation people are giving now is that it was the christmas period that people were on holiday if they weren't paying attention this is never the last public agency. what we've heard already is that the federal information security has been starting to act as of yesterday they've had a crisis meeting with the intelligence services we also have it on good authority
9:05 am
that the american intelligence services are helping on investigating but the question of course is why did they not try to prevent first of all for the distribution because the leak was published almost a month ago and why they did not inform better so they said they were reaching out to a couple of will make us but there was a lot of broad information sort of strategy and this is showing how still germany needs to work on how it handles security cyber security in general what about bees burning questions i mean are we any closer today to answering who did this and why did they do it what we know so far is that that was her account has been active as of two thousand and fifteen and already back then could be tracked or like affiliates towards the right spectrum but has never been active both as like a political sort of platform or as a sort of agent in within the hacking communities about that was really new to that account as far as you could track a bag what that was quite interesting to see that it only like to get
9:06 am
a couple of hours until it was finally shut down both on twitter and the blog on a google platform that was also used to. publish billings but that could have happened within a month already now some politicians before them calling this an attack on german democracy but we do suspect are we pretty much know cyber security officials say at least the government infrastructure was not affected so how big of a deal is this how serious of a threat is this act this is not a classic hack in the sense that this is an attack on a search system a platform for example in social media or an infrastructure critical infrastructure this was something that was more the accumulation of data so this was. all status some dike dating back to two thousand and twelve to old for example has that happened on facebook in the last years and that data was accumulated and that's kind of the remarkable and also likely concerning part of this is because it was more about profiling public personalities accumulating data on them in sort of data sets also. looking at select how the data can be used for example they were like oh
9:07 am
you could use this for the other suggestions in these data files how to use the data and it was more a question of what kind of profiling these people showing one of the will or ability of these public personas and using it more psychological wolfensohn. thank you very much. to the u.s. now where talks are set to continue this weekend between president donald trump and congressional leaders over the government shutdown which is entering its third week democratic leaders are refusing to give in to trump's demand for billions of dollars to build a mexican border wall trump says he's prepared to keep parts of the government shutdown for months or even years he's also considering declaring a national emergency to get the wall built or than eight hundred thousand federal workers are affected and there's no guarantee that they will ever be paid. i'm very proud of doing what i'm doing i don't want to shut down i call it doing what you

have to do for the benefit and for the safety of our country if i build a steel wall rather than a concrete wall it will actually be stronger than a congressi i was stronger than concrete ok. listen if i build a wall and a wall is made of steel it said of concrete i think people will like that that was what the president had to say during a press conference on friday from a real shutdown to a possible impeachment two members of the u.s. congress have begun an attempt to impeach u.s. president donald trump they have a supports of a high profile new congresswoman that's russian leader was called the president a bully and she even used an expletive to refer to him however the democratic leadership does not support impeachment right now as speaker nancy pelosi says she will only consider trying to remove trump once an investigation into his campaign's alleged russian connections is complete. now to some of the other stories
