this is the news live from berlin a massive cyber security breach rocks the german capital as data from hundreds of politicians and public figures is released online private phone numbers and documents and credit card details were published on twitter last month victims want to know why it took until yesterday for them to be informed also coming up a birthday party goes tragically wrong for five teenagers during an escape room challenge in the poland they were trapped when fire broke out in. the world.

i'm calling assman welcome to the program many of the victims of a massive data leak in germany are asking why it took so long for them to be informed personal information from hundreds of german politicians and celebrities was published online in december but only became public on friday the stolen data was posted on the twitter account over four weeks in the style of an advent calendar now the leak impact of politicians at all levels including chancellor merkel foreign minister. and president. in fact there were very few politicians who were not targeted most were from merkel's conservatives the c.d.u. with some four hundred and ten affected also the german s.p.d. the social democrats and the left party but there was one notable exception the far

right of d. the party confirmed yesterday that none of their lawmakers were affected german authorities say the government's i.t. network was not compromised and they're looking at where the stolen information came from the intent though remains unclear. it come on i mean yes we have abuse difficult to make money with this daughter because most is already publicly available so there's limited black mode which i'm sure we used to speak of activism but we'll see what the investigation turns up middle ne of years maximally on the kosik has been tracking the story for us she joins me now in studio max you heard there german authorities they've known about this for weeks why did it take them so long why didn't we know about this sooner well it's not uncommon for investigators for something current a case is to keep the public uninformed for certain terms of like keeping the investigation going like strategic reasons bus in this crisis rather problematic because they said they knew by mid december when the initial publication of the lings where the data was circulated with became public but the early yesterday
1:03 pm
stated that the now looking into it they had yesterday crisis meeting with the intelligence services and the internet the german federal agency for information security problematic it is because the links that have been circulated within the last month could contain potentially malware so if people are just digging into it which is sometimes quite tempting if you think of like oh i want to be a detective myself then that could contain malware which then again cause of course could cause harm to the computers of those use it and of course they didn't inform a lot of the victims or some people had been informed but not everybody and that's of course a concern because people trust these agencies to take care of this during your personal information is out there you want to know right in two thousand and fifteen so the suspected russian hackers they infiltrated the german parliament what about this time around how serious was this act well this is not a hack in the classic sense as it happened in two thousand and fifty in two thousand and fifteen the german parliamentary infrastructure technological
1:04 pm
infrastructure was attacked it was crazy the data leaked that then affect over twenty thousand accounts in the german parliamentary system and that was data leaking continuously throughout the year what happened this time is that it was an actual ation of data coming from. previous data breaches but also some data that has just recently been hacked and that data have been accumulated into profiles of public personas for example politicians but also other celebrities german moderates are present as journalists and the state of profiles have been also analyzed so the people behind the state of race have time to kind of profile certain public personas and really think of like how can we make them look want to bill how can we target them pacifically and that is something that is different because it's more of a psychological wolf in a sense you mentioned who is affected so hundreds of politicians nearly every german political party except for the far right does that tell us anything about the motivation may be behind this attack so experts looking at the account that had
1:05 pm
initially published these links where the data was circulated with said that the account which was found in two thousand and fifteen on twitter on the social media platform had affiliations to the far right at the same time the count was in active for a while so there's now suggestion that it may have even been hacked itself and one problem that security x. was always one about is that it should be you ssion and hacking with cyber security cases like this is always very difficult because you can always make it look like a certain picture like this paints in a sense of very clear picture that maybe this is coming from the far right but that could also be something that hackers have been manipulating to look like so it's very important and how can cause like this to always jump not to jump to conclusion and always be careful and white interesting stuff is maximally on the cocksure thanks very much five teenage girls have died after a fire broke out in an escape room game in northern poland typically the games involve locking participants inside a room where they find clues and solve riddles to get out escape rooms have grown
