i don't want to go. into systems. or search turned her into a. w. repeat of the fact that. this is deja vu news live from berlin germany security agency defends how it handled a massive data half the security breaches rocks germany as data from hundreds of politicians and public figures is released online some victims say authorities failed to inform them about the suspicious activity soon enough we'll speak to a cyber security expert in a moment. also coming up a birthday party goes tragically wrong for five teens during an escape room challenge in poland they were trapped when fire broke out. and in the bundesliga
5:01 pm
winter training camp is in full force with title favorites dortmund and find me during our for the second half of the season. i'm sumi so much going to it's good to have you with us germany's cyber defense agency is defending the way it handled a massive data leak of personal information from hundreds of german politicians and celebrities was published online back in december but only became public knowledge yesterday and victims are demanding to know why the cyber security body says it didn't alert them earlier because it wasn't able to connect the dots and didn't know the extent of the breach until yesterday now the data was posted on a twitter account over four weeks and the leak impacted politicians at all levels including the german chancellor angela merkel of the foreign minister heikal mohsen also. the president of the put the stock both on choice in fact there were very few
5:02 pm
politicians who were not targeted most were from chancellor merkel's conservatives also from the center left social democrats the left party the notable exception the far right a.f.d. the party confirmed yesterday that none of their lawmakers were affected german authorities say the government's i.t. network was not compromised and looking at where the information came from the intent remains on clear some politicians are demanding action. and what i heard shocked me this is a grave attack on democracy in our country. there are massive problems in the digital security architecture we put titian's haven't looked off this enough in recent years can we commit to the government has gross and neglected that. we have to take action this is a turning point i mean. for more of the story we're joined in story here by is of
5:03 pm
us she is an expert on cyber security currently at berlin's digital society institute's isabel thanks for joining us here as we mentioned the cyber security agency the b.s.i. as it's called her and her body this is agency is defending itself right now saying it couldn't connect the dots between the information that they were seeing leaked and also that they only realized the extent of the sleek yesterday what do you make of that. so i think right now we don't have enough information to judge their exact behavior but what we do know is that in early december they were alerted by people who used data had been hacked and also politicians from political parties. so they say that they couldn't connect the dots because they did not know also at the time that the twitter account would leak the data they did not know about this twitter account. however. it doesn't really make so much sense
5:04 pm
right now. to understand whether they had alerted other agencies because they said they fed the information into the national cyber defense center so the question is what happened with the information there and if there had been different data points could they have connected them and actually with that have let's who to the account into all of the. data earlier ok so you're not entirely convinced by the defense here that the it's giving if this was an issue probably have more information given for more information maybe that will be revealed in the coming days and weeks that we're waiting for and i think at that point in time they could have also already alerted to the police which they did not do when victims are definitely demanding answers we politicians as well we need answers that's why they agree on we need more answers what about the severity of this breach you know this was private information numbers credit card information it wasn't the government works targeted does that make it less serious in
5:05 pm
a way. so what we can say is that this leak did not reveal any sensitive political data or secrets data as we could have imagined from hack of government computers for example so in that sense i would say on the political level it's not that serious. and it is it can be embarrassing for the people involved so it actually does carry some political damage for the people who were involved in the hacked with information has been exposed and what we do see is that these tactics can be employed for example in the in the. election right so in order to discredit politicians in order to we can trust in the political systems system and in politicians and democracy itself so i think this is a warning that we should take seriously so can be destabilizing what about who is behind this and we know attribution is difficult but is there any indication here
5:06 pm
so we don't know who is behind that and we need to be very careful with attribution because technically right now we do not have enough details about this however we do know that there might have been more than one individual involved in this attack and it might have taken it it probably took a lot of effort to put the leaks together to get the data and then also to leak them in this advent calendar formant war over a lot of the data is copied in a way on two different service which is called mirroring so that it is very very hard to remove the data from the internet and even if you delete some of it even if you take down some of the information and the servers it's not possible at the moment to say whether it's actually in a short amount possible to delete all the data and that is what makes me say that was a lot of effort in a lot of manpower involved in this attack here at a very professional attack it's about skerrick an expert on cyber security at

5:08 pm
investigators pointed to a possible gas leak and faulty electric wiring as the cause of the blaze one official says the fire started outside the escape room and blocked employee from moving the girls to safety the employee suffered severe burns polish media reports show people had already voiced concerns on the game center's website complaining of a strong gas smell inside and said the set up was little more than a decorated garage the local fire department has called for immediate change the. decision has been issued starting tomorrow all escape rooms game centers and clubs will undergo fire safety inspections. of which special attention will be paid to evacuation plans and escape routes in these types of locations. there should be a moderator able to unlock the rooms and let people out we will check this and it
