the old. grey. card you mentioned starts in january thirteenth on w. . this is d w news live from berlin germany is our chief security agency defense how it handled a massive data how the security breaches rocked in germany as data from hundreds of politicians and public figures is released online some victims say authorities failed to inform them about the suspicious activity soon enough. also coming up salvaging a fragile truce the u.n.

special envoy arrives in yemen support city who data to urge rebel leaders to uphold a cease fire there will speak to oxfam on the world's worst humanitarian crisis with millions on the brink of famine in yemen. and a polish city mourns after a birthday party goes tragically wrong for five teenagers they were trapped when a fire broke out during an escape from challenge. time sumi so much going to thank you for joining us germany's that cyber defense agency is defending the way it handled a massive data leak personal information from hundreds of german politicians and celebrities was published online back in december but only became public knowledge yesterday and victims are demanding to know why the cyber security body says it didn't alert them earlier because it wasn't able to connect. the dots and didn't
6:02 pm
know the extent of the preach until yesterday now the data was posted on her twitter account over four weeks and the leak impact of politicians at all levels including the chancellor angela merkel of the foreign minister heikal mosse and also the president of the bundestag gun shy blip in fact there were very few politicians who were not targeted most were from chancellor merkel's conservative also from the center left social democrats and the left party the notable exception the far right f.t. the party confirmed yesterday that none of their lawmakers were affected german authorities say the government's i.t. network was not compromised and they're looking at where the information came from the intent remains unclear some politicians are demanding action but what i heard shocked me this is a grave attack on democracy in our country. there are massive problems in our digital security architecture we put tensions haven't
6:03 pm
looked off as enough in recent years can we commit to the government has gross and neglected its if you find nothing this least we have to think. this is a turning point for more of the story we're joined in story here by is of us she is an expert on cyber security currently at berlin's digital society institute's isabel thanks for joining us here as we mentioned the cyber security agency the b.s.i. as it's called here in germany this is agency is defending itself right now saying it couldn't connect the dots between the information that they were seeing leaked and also that they only realized the extent of the sleek yesterday what do you make of that. yeah so i think right now we don't have enough information to judge their exact behavior but what we do know is that in early december they were alerted by people whose data had been hacked and also politicians from political parties. so they say that they couldn't connect the dots because they did
6:04 pm
not know also at the time that the twitter account would leak the data they did not know about this twitter account however. it doesn't really make so much sense right now. to understand whether they had alerted other agencies because they said they fed the information into the national cyber defense center so the question is what happened with the information there and if there have been different data points could they have connected them and actually with that have let's who to the account into all of the are going to ration of data earlier ok so you're not entirely convinced by the defense here that the it is giving if this was an issue probably has more information given for more information maybe that will be revealed in the coming days and weeks that we're waiting for and i think at that point in time they could have also already alerted to the police which they did not do when victims are definitely demanding answers we say in politicians as well we need answers that's why they agree on we need more answers what about the severity
6:05 pm
of this breach you know this was private information numbers a credit card information it wasn't the government networks targeted does that make it less serious in a way. so what we can say is that this leak did not reveal any sensitive political data or its secrets data as because of imagined from hack of government computers for example so in that sense i would say on the political level it's not that serious. and it is it can be embarrassing for the people involved so it actually does carry some political damage for the people who were involved in the hacked with information has been exposed and what we do see is that these tactics can be employed for example in the. election right so in order to discredit politicians in order to we can trust in the
6:06 pm
political systems system and in politicians and democracy itself so i think this is a warning that we should take seriously so it can be destabilizing what about who is behind this and we know attribution is difficult but is there any indication here so we don't know who is behind that and we need to be very careful with attribution because technically right now we do not have enough details about this however we do know that there might have been more than one individual involved in this attack and it might have taken it it probably took a lot of effort to put the leak together to to get to get the data and then also to leak them in this advent calendar formant war over a lot of the data is copied in a way on two different service which is called mirroring so that it is very very hard to remove the data from the internet and even if you delete some of even if you take down some of the information and the servers it's not possible at the moment to say whether it's actually in
6:07 pm
a short amount possible to delete all the data and that is what makes me say that was a lot of effort in a lot of manpower involved in this attack here at a very professional attack it's about skerrick an expert on cyber security act of berlin's digital society institute thank you so much for joining us here and thank you. a u.n. special envoy is in yemen to shore up a fragile cease fire in the port city of her data martin griffiths arrived in yemen's capital sana'a to meet with her the rebel leaders to later travel to saudi arabia for talks with yemen government officials who the loyalists in who data are calling for a full implementation of the un backed truce held as a breakthrough in efforts to end yemen's for your civil war the conflict has unleashed the world's worst humanitarian crisis at the port city of data is the entry point for most of the food aid that comes into the country. let's bring in motion said dickie he is the director of the charity oxfam in yemen he joins us from santa wilson thank you so much for being with us and as we just heard the u.n.

his visit here and also. there will be a meeting in the end sometime in january all right so this could be an important step forward now the city of poll data as we said it's a key port city it's very crucial for a chipman what is the situation on the ground there at the moment in terms of aid. i think the situation has improved after the cease fire as i said both parties are constructive so for the risk we didn't have a started returning to the cities. and the shops began opening shops been closed that began opening and the aid agencies have better access to provide. this system to the affected publishing and we do have plans to even expand our programs over there so we do hope that the build the focus will remain at the same time we would also expect from the general

conversation but the ceasefire is the. country wide at the same time also. the budget with respect to the international human shield laws and we will be we will be able to deliver aid any hindrance to read to publish and in need just very briefly if you can this is still the world's worst humanitarian crisis what do you need to see from the un and the rest of the international community to stabilize the situation. i think the faster we need to see that both parties continue respecting the cease fire and who did that and they also have an expanded scope of work on the conversation to have country cease fire to end the war and then opening of the airport for commercial flights and then i mean there would be no him. from the international community to access. the population in
