unique. place. this is g w news law from berlin a inter-national concern grows over a young saudi women in thailand the eighteen year old says that she is fleeing abuse and will be killed if forced to return cold now u.n. refugee officials have granted access to her. also coming up. a u.s. navy destroyer tested chinese resolve with a closer sale by of disputed islands in the south china sea this as trade talks between washington and beijing kick off and the bones government says that it has

failed to attempt a rescue for soldiers who are trying to seize power this morning so is this the end of the rebellion and tonight a surprise the golden globes in los angeles a movie about rock band queen defines expectations and takes the top awards for best drama and best actor and veteran actress glenn close is awarded for a film that she says no one in hollywood wanted to make. i'm sara kelly welcome to the program. thailand has granted temporary entry to a saudi teenager who says that she is fleeing abuse so that she can meet with officials from the united nations refugee agency mohamad noon barricaded herself in a hotel room in a bangkok airport to avoid being returned to her family she began posting on
3:02 pm
twitter with calls for help on sunday she hopes to travel on board to australia and apply for asylum there i'm not leaving my own until i see you and h. . i won't. i have no choice. this it i have to go tomorrow. no one can help me right now no. this cry for help was recorded by rob mohammed ok noon an eighteen year old saudi woman who was fleeing from her family the woman was on her way to claim asylum in australia when she was stopped to bangkok airport tyo authorities pulled her aside and her passport was seized by a saudi diplomat she was then brought to an airport hotel room she barricaded herself in and took to twitter with incredible success her tweets went viral tyo
3:03 pm
authorities now seem less likely to cooperate with the saudi government. we will talk to her and do whatever she requests she escaped trouble to seek help and we are the land of smiles we will not send anyone to their death we don't do that we live here to the human rights principles under the rule of law. now that hum. the saudi woman says she's fleeing abuse and death threats from members of a family she is sent back to saudi arabia. to her family they will have essential impunity to abuse her to inflict on a related violence against her and saudi arabia has a very poor track record in investigating and prosecuting these kind of cases the un refugee agency has kohl and has now sent a delegation to meet in the airport hotel room but there are also reports her
3:04 pm
father who is a senior government official is on his way to bangkok and let's get more now from gadhafi is florian nationalise covering this story for us from bangkok florian bring us up to date what's happening right now. yes so apparently the saudi woman has left the help forge under the care of the u.n.h.c.r. under the refugee organization we have seen pictures on her twitter with her outside her hotel room with that person front u.n.h.c.r. and it has actually been confirmed by several media outlets so i guess it is actually credible it is confirmed that rafa has left the hotel what we know is what the u.n. h.c.r. is tweeting is that it's probably be under their care for the next five days this
3:05 pm
is how long it might take to find another country where she might. actually go to and apply for asylum there now human rights watch they've made the claim they say that they're concerned about her safety that she might be in danger if she is returned home just walk us through why. well. she said in her twitter account that she had been the victim of physical and mental abuse that for example she had been locked into her room for six months just for having her hair cut short so this was one thing and then she said that she renounced islam now that there's a a very capital crime in in saudi arabia and you actually can get the death penalty for that so she said she had to flee the country she used the opportunity
3:06 pm
after a family visits to kuwait and helped on a on a plane to bangkok and apparently. she will actually move on to another country the human rights watch has actually and u.n.h.c.r. have fanged one country specifically for actually being. a lot of help during this process that basically went on all day and that is canada so i'm not one hundred percent sure what that means but we might actually see the saudi woman getting transferred onto canada and maybe applying for asylum there but that is not confirmed yet and we have seen these thai authorities say that they will not deport her just walk us through the significance of that statement and what do you think happens now florian well that was actually i didn't feel i understand your question but i guess you asked about the thai authorities it was a remarkable turnaround over the course of this day because this morning title
3:07 pm
for it is basically said that they would deport her back to where she came from so are back to kuwait and then all of a sudden and that came as a surprise to basically everyone here they said no thailand is the land of smiles that is the claim that the tourism authority actually uses and a land of smiles can never return anyone to their death so i would just assume that the pressure that had been building up quite a bit especially from western diplomats who all urged the thai government not to departure that that actually. sort of bore fruit and this is why we have seen this development florian lurch in bangkok thank you flora. mohamed al qa noon has been using social media as we've heard to draw international attention to her case and i'm joined now by frederica baggio from date of use
3:08 pm
social media team you've been online you've been monitoring the situation how did she manage to get her story out for free so on saturday two days ago this twitter account was created using her real name or half mohammed moon and in just over two days it's gathered close to fifty thousand followers and we have seen she's been using to succumb to really document her struggle through pictures videos both in arabic and english one of her first tweets here was this message i am the girl who run away from kuwait to thailand i'm in real danger so she's really trying to convey a sense of urgency there that she's also trying to gain people stress that she it's really her and that she really is a need and to do that for example she posted a picture of her passport and she has also been appealing directly to western officials asking for help for example she wrote this i seek protection in
3:09 pm
particular from the following countries canada united states was united kingdom and it really looks also like someone close to her was also helping her out. using this account to keep up the pressure as she mentioned kuwait she was on vacation with her family there it's been reported but she she's from saudi arabia do we know much more about her life there well i mean if we look at this twitter account it's it was only created two days ago so it really gives a provides a narrow window into her life before this incident but we looked into it and we believe we have found we have managed to identified an older account of hers and it's this account it's only in arabic and it's running under a different name to be likely so that she could. speak out more freely and we believe that this is the account we believe this was her account because
3:10 pm
a number of guinea szell tweets from the airport including this video for example were posted to this older account hours before they were posted to the new account which uses her real name and this is interesting because this older account has existed for years and digging through the twitter history it really gives a picture of someone who was very critical of saudi arabia who spoken out against the lack of women's rights whose cold so demand even backwards and where also it was speaking out against the killing of dissident journalist for instance and this is not the first case of its kind in a way that actually there are a lot of similarities between this case and another case from twenty seventeen where another young saudi woman dina. she was trying to flee to australia and she was on route from kuwait through the philippines but was forced back to saudi arabia from airport by her family and she was also able through social media to send out
3:11 pm
a video asking for help and ever since she arrived back in saudi arabia and her faith remains unknown so it's not the first case of frederica baggio on the story for us you know going through all of these different things on line thank you so much for making sense of it for us. when our u.s. guided missile destroyer sailed to near disputed islands in the south china sea the destroyer cruised within twenty two kilometers of the paracel islands where beijing has military installations the islands are claimed by china taiwan and to vietnam a spokeswoman said that the u.s.s. mccampbell was on a freedom of navigation operation to challenge excessive maritime claims poor china resolutely opposed to the actions of the u.s. . we urge the u.s. to immediately stop such provocative steps china will continue to take the necessary measures to defend its national sovereignty and and security. ok so
3:12 pm
hearing some of the reaction from china there ben is here now to tell us what this could mean actually for. if you look at global stocks today there's a lot of caution traders don't know what twenty nine thousand is going to bring for them could it be the beginning of the end of this trade war we do not know it's been probably gone for almost a year now but let's take a look at what's at stake the negotiations to smoove smooth over the u.s. china trade happening right now in beijing this is the spirit of course it's all u.s. president or trump announced tariffs on chinese steel and million first but then adding several other products later in the year china remember is america's biggest trading partner and exports more than fifty billion dollars worth of goods to the united states so far washington is threatening to slap tariffs on chinese goods worth around two hundred fifty billion euros a dollars rather china has also retaliated o.b.s. was smaller scale because the u.s. exports fuel goods to the country it said it could impose extra duties on goods
3:13 pm
worth one hundred ten billion dollars the two countries the ninety day ceasefire last month so the pressure is on to result of this trade spat before that truce expires at the end of march a goal few think is achievable. the u.s. and chinese representatives will need one key quality staying power these trade negotiations are set to be blown and difficult nonetheless this real hope that the trade conflict may finally be brought to an end china has already outed to ease tensions by lifting its ban on imports of u.s. only be an suspending extra tariffs on american cars business leaders are expressing cautious optimism we're seeing an acceleration of many of the policies that china is committed to implementing to fall within this ninety day negotiating period indicating that we china is making signals to show that there is opportunity for progress here. with tumbling my. pressure from agriculture and from industry
3:14 pm
the conflict is clearly making itself felt in the u.s. the latest example being apple's revised outlook over falling sales. we've been convinced since the beginning that friction between china and the u.s. is not a good situation for either country or indeed for the world economy as a whole china has confidence on the basis of mutual respect and equality that it will be possible to resolve the bilateral trade dispute. on the order it is all. china is suffering to as a result of the conflict import prices and reduced exports weakening economic growth both sides are feeling the pressure. let's talk about the trade told us we have stephen bids alessi and how critical is it that a resolution be found. then i think it's getting more critical as we've seen with
3:15 pm
the stock market gyrating up and down we know that investors are already nervous about slowing global growth that doesn't really have much to do with this trade dispute but that's in the background they're seeing that they're saying everything's already slowing down and then what is this going to bring we know that really in the last two quarters the trade has really hit bottom lines for companies and they've been setting up red flags more and more and saying hey this is cutting into our revenues and so there is more of an urgency behind this so how do we get a resolution which additionally would get a resolution the same way any two negotiating sides get it by concessions and by the escalation of course with anything involving president trump it's it's nontraditional right he's very impulsive sometimes form an image an optics matters more than substance so it's hard to really say which way could go we know that at the heart of the u.s. complaint are two issues one is the trade imbalance the other is. technology transfers which is code for ip theft intellectual property theft from china and so any efforts to resolve those would be wins in his book but they could be
3:16 pm
complicated so you can't really escalate this whole trade or you can only deescalate a bit who is in a position to do that because the u.s. obviously as far as trade volumes go is in a stronger position and has boliver it but china at the same time is going to overtake the u.s. economy at some stage which i'm guessing the u.s. is quite worried about well i mean i mean yes you could escalate this further right because there is a large amount of these tariffs that were supposed up to twenty five percent of the american side and that's been the late so there is that in the back pocket but yes both sides have leverage over the other i mean china's economy has been so built around exports that it's really getting hit hard right now it's seeing that without the domestic consumption that it needs to be able to fill in for this that it's really suffering on the american side there are major corporations like apple like boeing. caterpillar they do a lot of business in china hurting which are hurting and they're also very politically connected they're big businesses they employ a lot of people so they can raise alarms as well so this goes way beyond soybeans
3:17 pm
and intellectual property right for sure i mean this gets into a larger narrative of as you said china's emergence as a real economic threat to the traditional west which is something that's not just hitting the u.s. but also the e.u. the problem is with these tariffs the u.s. has really isolated itself and again what we see with the chinese economy is what's really been sort of a superficial or maybe sort of a one sided. plan around exports and now it's being it's paying for it it's a thank you very much for coming in. of fuel theft is a major economic problem in mexico along with violent criminal gangs the country's new president under face manuel lopez obrador has vowed to solve the problem but his first step in fighting back is creating a whole new mess for his country. long lines that fuel stations drivers waiting patiently but without much hope most gas stations in mexico have run out of fuel
3:18 pm
since the government shut down a major pipeline and started delivering gas by tanker trucks only. one of the. truth is so it's really bad because we already went to several gas stations and we didn't find gasoline it's been three days already yes. it's a disaster it's a disaster everywhere and i've been to two gas stations already and they don't have any fuel look at this wells can i go see them. for years criminals have tapped into pipelines stealing millions of leaders of fuel and depriving the state run oil monopoly pemex of over seven billion dollars in revenue that's according to government estimates. this is not petty theft we're talking about major robbery one thousand attacks on the pipeline per day fifteen thousand liters stolen each time.
3:19 pm
how do they distribute all that stolen gasoline. well there was an attitude of total complicity. of premix. violent criminal gangs have long relied on fuel theft to supplement their income but the government accomplices within the industry also seem to be a major part of the problem back to sara and an aborted coup in west africa thank you so much ben in fact we're talking about four of the five military officers who attempted to stage that coup in the central african nation of cup on they have been arrested in the capital libor villa courting two government officials this after armed soldiers seized the state radio station monday morning and declared president
3:20 pm
ali bongo unfit for office sporadic gunfire was reported in the capitol hill and tanks were patrolling streets the leader is currently in mexico. where he is receiving medical treatment through a stroke joining me now is ruth mclean a foreign correspondent for the guardian newspaper in dakar thank you so much for joining us ruth what can you tell us about what is happening in bonn at the moment . well as you say very early this morning in the japanese capital libra there were two men arrived at the state broadcaster and took over the radio and when announcing that they were basically station who they said that the day had arrived when the army had decided to take the side of the people in order to what it said was saving gone from chaos and called on the galleries people to rise up and take to the streets and occupy public buildings and the athel
3:21 pm
and the country is media organ that said that was that at about four thirty local time in labor bill that that happened and there were reports of shots being fired also near the state broadcaster at about same time. you know several hours later now and it does look like dooku might be all over even before it started there are reports from the communications minister that some of the coupons just have been arrested although i've also heard reports that. the main person who went on the air waves and read out statement is still on the run so it's a bit of a not clear picture. the government says that they'll have order restored in the next two to three hours but it's a question of really watching this space and. just briefly before we go why was there satisfaction with president goes well would you say. well the voters have
3:22 pm
been in power for a very long time and gotten out of bunkers father omar longo took power in one nine hundred sixty seven and it's been almost nothing but bongo since then so because i want people are quite set up they also point to the twenty six thousand election which was extremely close between early voting go and you know. there was a lot of violence around that election and you know a lot of people thought that it was raked at the moment and he goes out of the country and he doesn't seem to be very well he hasn't hardly had a stroke and that was one of the reasons that the plotters cited in their broadcasts they said that he wasn't fit to run the country anymore with mclean foreign correspondent for the guardian newspaper joining us from dakar with the very latest on the situation and up on thank you so much. thanks. to some other

liters of whiskey a year that's not that much compared to the big names in the industry but scotch is in demand around the world. our exports of about eighty five percent of our turnover and consult about forty two countries around the world. mainly as the as is a big market for us over here over of probes a very keen access to things go smoothly and the bricks that do in fact rex it is worrying the scottish whiskey industry scotch is still a trademark protected under law however some distillers feel they will lose the protected trademark scotch has within the e.u. . ok to a sport i've never really liked but i love cricket her row wix you never liked cricket now i have played ok here from australia so here we go to cricket where india has ended a seventy one year wait for their first ever test series victory in australia their

two one win was confirmed when the fourth of the final test in sydney ended in a draw a straight defeat is the latest embarrassment for their team following a major ball tampering scandal but for india captain kohli the success could not be sweeter. it's always a very proud moment more so because. for the last twelve months we understand what we have gone through as a team we understand the kind of cricket that we have been able to play and i was just mentioning the fact that after losing doses we have been in the competition throughout the games that we have lost. so we understood as a team we are on the right track but the fact that they do ward has been the most historic cities for indian cricket is you know a cherry on top of the cake. to football's asian cup in the usa you are thailand to have sacked their coach me live on right after just one game in the tournament an opening for one loss to india on the field china narrowly avoided their major upset

of their own clawing back from one goal down against tournament debut debutant excuse me just on a late goal from you about how sealed the two one victory for china. well meantime the handball world championship starts it's thursday in berlin and it opens with a unique match germany versus korea this will be korea's first ever unified appearance at a handball world championship with north korean players being integrated into the south korean team they've been training together in berlin for two weeks to make sure that their athletic impact is as big as their diplomatic one. the match between the korean handball world championship squad in german third division side potsdam may have just been a pretty tournament warm up but it was still somewhat historic for the first time ever korea has a unified handball team with players from both countries in the tournament opener korea coach cho young shin squad will face co-host germany in the german capital.
3:47 pm
of the world championship is really meaningful for us especially since we'll be playing in berlin we're in was a divided city have found a way to peace after the fall of the wall as a unified team we want to show that korea can also find this way to. show young shin will only have had three weeks to integrate four players from north korea into the team a massive challenge in modern handball but the north koreans don't stand out much in training except for maybe their shoes which are the blue red and white of their flag. we felt a bit distant from each other when we first met the north koreans. grown closer in the days we've spent together so i was and now we've become friends. and everything sounds rosy for the captain but his new teammate from north korea. has a more level take our first world championship we've got lots of expectations about what will experience and what we'll learn of course we also want to strong showing
3:48 pm
you. north and south korea made history with a united women's hockey team at the winter olympics and young change the pre-selected north korean fans went by role in a p.r. coup for the regime. but on the ice the first ever appearance of a combined team was a sporting disaster. coach show you i'm sure in is hoping to avoid a similar showing but that gap in quality between players from the north and south is significant. technically the north koreans aren't the strongest but they really want to integrate into the team. they're in top shape so while incorporate that into my tactics to take advantage of their strengths. and. promise to play at least one north korean in every world championship match in the tuneup against pot stam only riquelme son made an appearance his three countrymen to watch from the bench as korea fell to the german third division so.

well now for many getting rid of the family christmas tree marks the end of the holiday season but in s. and germany it's much more with the city hosting the christmas tree throwing world championship yes it is a thing that the competition which sees chill feel participants launch trees as far as ten metres of volved out of the city's traditional day for christmas tree removal and build the biggest trees have quite some help to them competitors and their trees come in a lot sizes. this was the thirteenth edition of the annual celebration. it was a night of surprises at the golden globe awards in los angeles where a number of the movies the fancied by the critics fell short of expectations bohemian rhapsody was one of the winners a biopic about the late freddie mercury singer of the british rock band queen

is that that's what's expected of us we have our children we have our husbands and for lucky enough and our partners whoever but we have to find personal fulfillment we have to fill our. heart truly. we have to say oh i can do that and i should be allowed to do that. the award for best foreign language film went to roma filmmaker alfonso quote owns ode to his childhood in one thousand seven hundred mexico he also picked up the price for best director. and lady gaga who everybody expected to climb to the stage as this year's best actress didn't have to leave empty handed together with her co-writers. received the golden globe for best original song. doug marr bout the golden globes is robert merrill from arco sadowsky we just saw her there lady gaga wearing that enormous dress for office of awards dress but it was really a disappointment for the film a star is born yes it was actually because it had

five nominations and i guess bradley cooper was very disappointed because he was in three of them he was up for best actor best director and it was up for best film was why i didn't get the golden globes were always considered the teaser for the oscars but in recent years this hasn't been the case so maybe he'll clean up and he'll get do what at the oscars as well as a beautiful song but you see him singing also i should mention that the globes of course voted for the jury is the foreign press association in hollywood so they perhaps have very different tastes i mean the press officer or a funny lot. says he i won't respond to that i'm. not in a statement there we have to talk about another big winner and this is from a different category of comedy and it was green yeah first of all i should explain there are two best film categories is one for drama which but he didn't win the one for musical comedy. and musical comedy it was green but which.

alley famous of course for moonlight even a compromise and he's a playing a world class pianist who tours the racially segregated deep south in the nine hundred sixty s. america rather like jazz musicians before me plays in tall hotels but he can't stay there he can't eat. however the film is also very much about the relationship he has with both and son who we sold if you've got me. who plays is dr and indeed his daughter and it's based on a true story and one of the rights is actually. the son of the character. but it wasn't the favorite to win interestingly the favorite was vice which was this movie about dick cheney the former u.s. vice yeah i mean vice have the most nominations had six nominations in in all but
3:54 pm
only one won which was for christian bale playing dick cheney this was best film in a musical or a comedy again a bit strange but actually one has to say that this film is very much just. is of course a comedic form however it's also a quiet disturbing film i mean bale transformed himself you see in him you can't believe that christie about he's put on forty pounds to play this and it was also very interesting that in his acceptance speech at the globes he thanked state for his inspiration and. i should say them all except i think vice will do better at the oscars and i think a star is born will do better at the oscars as well now kind of will hold you to that robin let's check in with you the day after to see if that doesn't it correct we have to talk about the face which is quite familiar to the goals and globes you know one who has won golden gloves in the past appearing in court today so yeah
3:55 pm
that kevin spacey kevin spacey is appearing in court today on charge of the not alleged sexual assault in a bar none talk in twenty sixteen this is as we know a result of the mitsu times up movement all this and in fact last year at the golden globes everybody will black. you know to show solidarity with people that suffered sexual harassment this ship that much more colorful instead spacy disappeared from view for balance a year. and really we didn't hear or see or hear of him authorities made this strange video in a sort of christmas eight from where. he was playing the role he used to play as u.s. president in the house of cards i have a very weird move anyway he'll be appearing on nantucket island in court today he won't be appearing in the christian safe or not facing some serious charges
3:56 pm
