7:02 pm

7:03 pm
meet visa requirements the eighteen year old then barricaded herself in an apple tart tell room she drew attention to her plight on social media quickly gathering tens of thousands of followers she said she feared for her life after her family threatened her for announcing islam and cutting her. i'm not leaving my own until i see you and age. the title forty seem to perform a dramatic about face ben promising not to deport a. lot i don't quit how i found him we will talk to her and do whatever she requests yes kate trouble to seek help and we are the land of smiles but we will not send anyone to that. we want to do that by we will adhere to human rights. principles and to the rules of all that pipe that need come.
7:04 pm
thailand is not a signatory to the un refugee convention and provides no legal protection to asylum seekers books the united nations says it will do everything in its power to help welcome new. well for the latest let's talk now to phil robertson from human rights watch in bangkok who has been helping coordinate efforts to prevent deportation certainly to have you with us so immediate deportation has been averted but just to be clear is one half now under the care of the u.n. h.c.r. . that's our understanding she has been registered as a refugee with them and they're going to continue doing interviews with her to fully assess her status issue is confirmed as a refugee then she will. presumably be assisted to seek safety in a third country it's not quite clear where what country that might be but.
7:05 pm
eventually she would be able to find a safe and secure your place oh and do you expect the u.n.h.c.r. to take to process and assess her case. i think they recognize like everyone that this is an urgent and sensitive case and they'll try to move as fast as possible on this you know i don't expect it's going to be months or years i think it's probably going to be weaker maybe months but not too long because i think that is a very high profile case and everybody recognizes that she's still at risk what are you being concerns right now well one of the main concerns is that her father is a saudi government official is supposed to arriving here tomorrow in thailand and we're concerned that he might try to do something to try to take her back or to try to assert control over her she's eighteen years old she should be allowed to decide
7:06 pm
who she wants to see and who she doesn't want to see and we want to make sure that there are no games played by the saudi government to try to do something to take her back have you been in touch with her have you spoken to her how is she yes yes i mean obviously relieved but she was tremendously tired night sleep for a very very long time. has any country a come forward at this stage and showed willingness to offer a half asylum. it's a little bit too early to say what will happen is that you and h.r. will complete their process probably in the next couple days and then they will turn to various different countries and find out who might be willing to consider right now perhaps a case has been unfolding and real time on social media what happens when a tension wanes. well i think that we will not see attention wane i think that
7:07 pm
there is a great deal of interest in the global community in her case i think that the media you know turned out significant numbers it's been a huge story globally and i think that people will continue to be interested in till she actually gets to a safe place phil robertson from here in the rights watch and bangkok thank you sir for your time thank you. and as you've been hearing social media has helped draw international attention to a case i'm now joined by our very own for that it got bashar from our social media department physica good to see you it's been quite an extraordinary day to see this unfold in real time on twitter more specifically how did she manage to get her story out well so for the last couple of days she has been really documenting her struggle on twitter also with the help of a friend who also has access to her account and this is a twitter profile was created on saturday it's using the name mohammed
7:08 pm
so her real name it's been tweeting both in arabic and english and this is one of her first tweets she says i'm the girl who run away from kuwait to thailand i'm in real danger and it really tries to convey the sense of urgency and also to prove that it really is her and that she's really in a neat and to do that she posted a picture of her passport for example and the account features dozens of appeals also to western officials asking for help here she says i seek protection in particular from the following countries canada united states united kingdom and this way rap managed to really get the attention of prominent human rights and also feminist activists across the world to help their spread her message and in just. over two days her account has now gathered over sixty seven thousand followers and
7:09 pm
counting scatter such momentum in such a short time this is not the first type of case that we've seen unfold as we know and they have been a number of saudi women who attempted to flee the country who have been documenting their journey on a social media to try and i'm pleased by their calls for help some of them manage some of them didn't and actually the case of the story of her half has a lot of similarities with another case from two thousand and seventeen that of another young saudi woman. who she tried to flee australia to seek asylum there she was flying from kuwait to the philippines but she was stopped at many airport and she was taken back to saudi arabia by members of her family she still managed to get the phone of the canadian tourist though and post a message to twitter where she was asking for help and since she had arrived back in saudi arabia her fate has been unknown so we don't know what happened to her or
7:10 pm
for that of our children did every social media thank you. here in germany police have begun questioning suspects in the latest data rich to afflict some of the country's best known people a hacker released personal details belonging to politicians and other celebrities in the run up to christmas while now with ortiz search a home in the southern city of how brawn and grill possible witnesses as the hunt continues for the latest culprit to expose the shortcomings of germany's there's whole security. much remains unclear but this much is known almost a thousand politicians and celebrities were affected by the data leak personal phone numbers home and e-mail addresses were made public and in some cases private messages and photos as well. we know that in fifty to sixty cases large amounts of data were published we found indications that the data was acquired in various ways including unauthorized access to use accounts the unknown
7:11 pm
perpetrator published the data in december on twitter investigators have begun questioning witnesses they also searched the apartment of a nineteen year old in the south of germany authorities learned about the data theft late last week it's now been revealed that the responsible government agency already learned about five such cases last year they only made the connection to the recently leaked data after it happened opposition members criticize authorities for not reacting fast enough. if any good can come out of this but it's that politicians and investigators are getting a wakeup call to become more alert hopefully in the future digital communication will be more secure. the. federal interior minister horse they hope for will comment on the data theft this tuesday until then investigations into how much knowledge the authorities had previous to the data leak continue. well for more on
7:12 pm
the story did or he's just a fossil buff spoke to german justice minister qatari not partly. minister how serious is the damage caused by the hacking and so. we don't know exactly yet how how high the damages can sending the data but the damage is high consenting to your confidence people have in debt security so we. we all together have to face this have to take action politicians as well as the social media companies as well as people themselves they have to secure they had a to as good as possible job but what can the government do to prevent it in the future some people say germany's quipped worse than all those. i think that the the level where we have to find regulation is the european level we do have
7:13 pm
the. regulation on data protection since may so there we have a much higher standard than anywhere else in the world but of course on national and national negative legislation we have to act to we have done that on different and different fields but of course we will take this scandal as an occasion to to find out if there is any more action to be taken. the government's end up on says the military officer who led an attempted coup has been arrested a group of armed soldiers seized the state radio station early on monday morning when they broadcast a statement the cleric that president ali bongo was unfit for office officials say all the soldiers involved in the coup have now been captured or killed the boss president meanwhile is currently in morocco we're covering from a stroke i'm. joining me now is
7:14 pm
a ruth mcclean foreign correspondent for the guardian newspaper and the car. what is the situation right now well the government has just announced quite in the past few hours that they've arrested the last one of the coop doctors who took over the state would cost a very early this morning and that they were staging a coup and called on gabby's people to join that uprising and to occupy public buildings and to at will and the streets of the rebel. so the government now says it's arrested all five or perhaps even more of the coup plotters the main one who read out the declaration on the radio was apparently the last one to be arrested. according to some reports was found hiding under a bed in a house quite nearby state would cost the others where apparently it sounds that
7:15 pm
before that there was some indications from the government that we want to go to might have been killed but we have no confirmation on that yet so you know it seems like we're looking at a very short coup attempts here starting it will set us here this morning in labor hill but already according to the government already over can you tell us more about present all the bongos rule who is present. well president. has been president for quite some time but even in power for even longer with his father together they ruled in since about nine hundred sixty seven with only about four months break in between the end oh my god the father died you know i'm not going to go it was noted for really having looted the country of
7:16 pm
a vast oil wealth and. i don't go has tried to distance himself from the sins of the father as it were. but you know he came in for a great deal of criticism over the last election in twenty sixteen when he apparently won with in his home province ninety five percent of a ninety nine percent turnout so you know those look like very improbable figures and so people really said at the time that that was was a rigged election and so he went down on people's estimation and then said that the man that we're dealing with but he he's been ill recently and out of the country which is probably why the coup process decided to take advantage of this particular time risk mclean and a car thank you so very much. and i'm going to hand you over now to javier because there's a possible truce on the horizon in the us china trade war that would be
7:17 pm
a desired outcome at least from the point of view of the financial markets but it's going to be very difficult this is in the midst as we know of the strait dispute and let's have a look perhaps on how we got here we could say that this all began when donald trump first announced higher tariffs on chinese steel and aluminum before adding several other products leading to a full blown trade war which is we have what we have now that china is america's biggest trading partner and exports over five hundred billion dollars worth of goods to the u.s. so far washington has threatened to slap tariffs on chinese goods worth around two hundred fifty billion dollars china has also retaliated but to a smaller scale and that's mainly because as you can see china exports were the u.s. rather exports far less to china now china had said that it couldn't post extra duties on goods worth one hundred ten billion dollars the two countries declared a ninety day ceasefire last month now the pressure on the talks that are now starting is on to result the dispute before that ceasefire expires at the end of
7:18 pm
march most experts though think that won't happen. the u.s. and chinese representatives will need one key quality staying power these trade negotiations are set to be long and difficult nonetheless there's real hope that the trade conflict may finally be brought to an end china has already opted to ease tensions by lifting its ban on imports of us beings and suspending extra tariffs on american cars business leaders are expressing cautious optimism we're seeing an acceleration of many of the policies that china is committed to implementing to fall within this ninety day negotiating period indicating that we china is making signals to show that there is opportunity for progress here. with tumbling markets pressure from agriculture and from industry the conflict is clearly making itself felt in the u.s. the latest example being apple's revised outlook over falling sales. tweet
7:19 pm
we've been convinced since the beginning that friction between china and the u.s. is not a good situation for either country or indeed for the world economy as a whole china has confidence on the basis of mutual respect and equality that it will be possible to resolve the bilateral trade dispute. as all. china is suffering too as a result of the conflict import prices and reduced exports weakening economic growth both sides feeling the pressure. for more on the subject i am now joined by stephan legere at the university of tonight good to see you mr leggett thank you very much for joining us there has been so much that has been said on this trade dispute let's just focus on what's happening right now i know donald trump has repeatedly said that he loves tariffs and that trade wars are easy to
7:20 pm
wear no has that changed giving the pressure is now experiencing bad home as we just saw. well president doesn't it don't trump still focuses on short term narrow victories that he can sell to the public but increasingly we see that the trade conflict between the u.s. and china has an impact both in china and in the united states recall that the stock market both in china and and the america in america is down. some companies in the u.s. are under intense pressure including soybean farmers so donald trump must now respond to that pressure in addition because he lost the midterm elections now there are different options he he can consider one is to help those companies in need the recent ten or twelve billion dollar bailout scheme suggested this could be an option maternity leave would be to seek another trade truce a so-called deal like the one that he signed with north korea in twenty eighteen
7:21 pm
a superficial deal that would not solve the underlying problems but one that he intends to sell as a victory to his voters let's take a look at the giants we've seen some companies with important operations in china like apple as we just heard experiencing losses and profit warnings what does the ongoing trade dispute mean for the biggest u.s. companies. well first of all the trouble we see in the stock prize of apple has less to do with the u.s. china trade war and much more with the fact that there's a limit in the willingness to pay of customers for i phones given the competition of android phones and given that apple no charges more than a thousand dollars for i phones but overall apple is doing fine they're still making lots of money they still have a nice profit just a little bit less than what was priced in the stock market in general if you look at american firms the impact of the trade war is different different from company
7:22 pm
to company there are some companies that are facing competition from chinese companies they might benefit especially in the short run from some protection is tariffs that have been imposed others those companies that depend on imports from china and other countries suffer from these tariffs and they see their costs go up they lose competitiveness over all the negative impact will prevail so the u.s. has to think about whether it wants to bear the costs of this trade conflict some bigger goal but ultimately it seems to be that the the china nor the u.s. will benefit but rather some third country potentially brazil all right thank you very much. from the inverse your stand out for us i. actually i went out with a story that has caused anger among brazilians absolutely and what we're talking about here have here is that a new hydroelectric power plant has just been completed in the middle of brazil's
7:23 pm
rain forest environmentalist and indigenous populations say the construction as a disaster the huge damn near the city of all time era has let to the rio shingo river being diverted it's a major amazon tributary and as a result vast tracts of land have been flooded about ten thousand people have lost their homes the political atmosphere isn't helping much either the newly elected president. also narrow threatening to dismantle the country's environmental policy water everywhere you look and tree tops they mark the spot where i'm going to gome as his house once stood. would give us a good time that's why the square on those islands which we had our own names full janani be something on the side of the. numerous villages along the shingle river have disappeared under the water backed up by the below munchie dam it's brazil's

prestige project for generating clean hydroelectric power. but for right one to gomez it's a nightmare. she was forcibly resettled and now lives with her husband in a remote part of the forest. he's had to give up fishing after stocks were depleted once construction work began. their village community has been destroyed forever. or. for that we just finished building our dream house along the river it took us fifteen years once it was built when we lived in it for a year before the dam kind all that what fanaa thing. it still drives my husband mad. with no money. the megaproject has turned to life along the river upside down thousands of workers from all over the country were brought in to help build the dam. it's changed the face of the city of all to mirah along with the arrival of
7:25 pm
criminal gangs. barbed wire fences have gone up to protect the homes of employees working for the dams operator company. next door is one of the new settlements for the twenty thousand riverbanks inhabitants forced to relocate they live in fear all to mirah now has one of the highest murder rates in brazil. daniel of us is silva was recently as hacked you could be and if you forget the gangster approached me with a knife and said where is your money here i said i don't have any but someone else came with a gun being the first i yelled shoot him that i can't get it out of my mind did it appear that you need me to fight you even yet another person forced to move to alter me or was claudio from the indigenous cora wyatt he's had to trade life along the river for a slum the dam has torn apart his family and the entire coral why a community. but the company has relocated to relatives
7:26 pm
to a completely different tone so we're isolated here it's a hard situation. the dam's operator rejects suggestions that it is responsible for broken communities and rising crime saying its policies are exemplary. you feel our company has helped revive traditions. to just turn to mice we regularly check on how to form a river bank and help things are doing. and this process of dialogue has improved noticeably. claudio hasn't seen improvement instead he says energy bills here are among the highest in brazil. the effects of been fatal for the environment for water quality and fishing for the river banks and for history it makes me sad to see the rio in this condition. the power plant doesn't even
7:27 pm
operate as it supposed to with a third of its turbines defective and yet the plan is to build more dams and what was once the unspoiled amazon basin. you're watching you bring yours so we have a lot more to share with you here's what's coming up actor kevin spacey appears in a u.s. court to hear charges of sexual assault against him he says he's not guilty of groping a teenage waiter and surprise winners at the golden globes including bohemian rhapsody a bio pic of the late queen singer freddie mercury the wife starring veteran actor glenn close also picks up awards including best actress. don't forget you can always get to for you news on the go just download our hour from google play or from the apple store to give you access to all the latest news from around the world as well as push notifications for any breaking news. you can also use if you

7:31 pm
a public radio station. oscar winner winner on winning actor kevin spacey has appeared in a massachusetts court to face claims of sexual assault spacy is alleged to have groped a young man in a bar in twenty sixteen if found guilty he faces up to five years in prison space his lawyer entered a not guilty plea and another hearing was set for march this is the first criminal case launched against the actor after a wave of sexual misconduct allegations brought an end to his career. all right let's cross over now to my a schrader she is following the story for us maya kevin spacey appearing in the tuck it of all places the getaway for america's rich and famous what has happened there two and a half years ago. as you mentioned he's been alone
7:32 pm
alleged to have groped a young man and this is an allegation that we see now fairly commonly coming out against spacy one of the first allegations against him that was came out into the public at the end of two thousand and seventeen was about someone alleging that he had tried to seduce him when that person was about fourteen years old so he seems to have a taste for younger men but it's definitely illegal to engage in sexual relations with a minor and it's also very illegal to get someone who is under the age of twenty one of the united states drunk which is also what's alleged in this case so there's a lot of layers to this in addition to the whole very high profile i mean it's quite a fall from greece for this movie star there are different accusations maya from several young men so we'll spacy face different more trials.
7:33 pm
it's looking like this is the one to focus on for now a lot of these allegations are very old and therefore out of the statute of limitations or can't be verified or corroborated one way or the other so this out there is allegations and it's interesting to note that spacey himself tried to avoid showing up at court this morning allegedly because he didn't want more negative press and that's very much what his defense has been simply negative press attempts to bring him down and that none of these have any none of these are true and that is why he entered a not guilty plea today and what's going to happen next mio. he's going to be he's going to have a free trial court hearing at the beginning of march as you mentioned so he has now a couple of months to get his defense in order but it very much looks like we won't
7:34 pm
be seeing kevin spacey back on the screens big or small any time soon irish raider reporting thank you. now it was a night to surprise us at the golden globe awards in l.a. a number of the movies fancied by the critics fall short of expectations but we hear absolutely was one of the winners a biopic about the late freddie mercury singer of the british rock band queen another was the wife starring veteran actor glenn close the night of high drama in beverly hills. romney model at. the top price came as a true surprise. the jury chose bohemian rhapsody as best drama for romney male the expert trail of queen front man freddie mercury his performance also earned him the best actor in drama some people feel belongs to thank you to freddie mercury for giving me the. time i love you you do for me this is.
7:35 pm
the reason we're. going to be there in a glenn close was named as best actress in a drama for her role and the wife. and it came. close appeared stunned when her name was called and her deeply personal except in speech marked the emotional high point of the night. you know women we were nurture is that that's what's expected of us we have our children we have our husbands are for lucky enough and our partners whoever but we have to find personal fulfillment we have to fill our. heart. we have to say i can do that and i should be allowed to do that. the award for best foreign language film went to roma filmmaker alfonso quote owns ode to his childhood in one thousand seven hundred mexico he also picked up the price for best director. and lady gaga
7:36 pm
who everybody expected to climb to the stage as this year's best actress didn't have to leave empty handed together with her co-writers she received the golden globe for best original song. right here to talk more about the golden globes is robin merrill from our culture a desk lady gaga we just finished that report with our looking five as always i getting awards but still a lot of disappointment out there that a star is born didn't get more i mean it had five nominations. and i mean bradley cooper was up for three of them as best actor best director best film and he didn't get any and also the golden globes always considered the sort of you know tease of the also because i have to say in recent is this hasn't been the case so maybe he'll clean on the film will a bit better anyway in february i should just mention the singing that song some fabulous that it is
7:37 pm
a good one i should also mention that the jury for the gold grows is of course the hollywood foreign press association is a very different to other juries i mean the press are funny. oh pride carol carol ok let's talk about another big winner best film in the category of musical or comedy was green yeah now first of all there are two best film categories in the golden globes is one for drama which was for him in the day and the musical comedy was a green book. and this was stop stop the alley who will know from the moonlight as a pianist who tools of the racially segregated deep south in the nineteen sixty's and robert like jazz musicians like you're getting some before him back in the night. he played in these fancy hotels but he wasn't allowed to say that. but actually the film is very much about the relationship between him and his drive
7:38 pm
a come bodyguard who's played by morton morton's a and by the way green book in the title was a real guide book for black people as to where they would be safe to eat and stay in the segregated south in the nine hundred sixty s. that's where the title comes from a very poignant now that film unfortunate was not even the favorite to win instead of course the movie portraying dick cheney vice was on everybody's now vice has the most nominations. six in ole including best film but only god won which was for christian bale playing take cheney and i mean this i mean i don't i mean it's he they got he got the award for best actor in a musical or comedy this well it is it. is a comedic fold one has to say but it is also quite disturbing film beltran see hold
7:39 pm
himself in the role as we can see putting on over forty pounds i was interesting in his sort of bravery speech acceptance speech i should say at the golden globes he's going to say inspiration in this acceptance speech i mean you know more except i think vice and indeed as far as star is born i think they'll do better at the oscars that will have to wait and see on a side note of course as all of this is on folding out a former gold loeb's winner has appeared in court today yeah. kevin spacey won a golden globe in twenty fifteen for of course his for trial in a house of cards but he wasn't it was lost like he was on the other side of the sites on the east coast in massachusetts where it's alleged that he's accused of assaulting a young man in a bar in none talking and that's why the the trial is taking place there.
7:40 pm
this is of course the results of the me too in times of movements which started over a year ago in fact you may remember the golden globes year ago will all the women dressed in black to show solidarity with putrid subtle suffered sexual harassment i mean that's trial as we've heard from my will go on in march and we'll hear more about that no doubt in the next months but he is. arguably the most high profile you know of course weinstein as well but the fall of fall from grace for kevin says that we're never going to see him on the silver screen or will we i don't think so i don't see that anybody would hire him that is a simple as that i mean he's a wonderful actress of there's no i think there's any doubt in any person's mind that he's done some fantastic work on the screen and on the stage when he was at the national theatre in london for quite
7:41 pm
a few years did some wonderful work there but i think his career is over. now thank you so very much and i am going to hand you over to vieira now because the tech world gets ready for the first big event that you had a little preview of me there exactly starting tomorrow the consumer electronics show in las vegas will showcase the most recent developments in the tech sector and it will once again show that times are changing artificial intelligence is revolutionizing how we interact with electronics more and more hardware includes ai technologies from autonomous cars to smart household helpers. this robot gets upset when it can't help with chores. like folding towels but there's another machine for that just one of the many highlights from the twenty eight hundred consumer electronics show which also featured. and do backflips. artificial intelligence will remain
7:42 pm
a major focus of this year's c.d.'s in las vegas but his firm cambridge consultants is among the more than five thousand exhibitors it's developed deprave and based system for vision the technology is learning how to read blurry images. the machine is essentially creating a new image from scratch purely baseless understanding of what is the real world look like so in a way it's doing something quite similar to our mind's eye where we look at a distorted image through you know kind of glass which might be a pipe but we can kind of construct in a model what we think the image looks like on the other side the technology would be valuable for driverless cars it could help the vehicles cameras deliver a clear image even when it's raining autonomous cars will also be in the spotlight of this year's c e s. on a related note tech rivals apple and samsung are known for billion dollar lawsuits against each other but now they are cooperating on at least one front they've struck a deal that will see i tunes video content made available on samsung smart t.v.'s
7:43 pm
apple plans to offer more services like i had to use to reduce its dependence on i phone sales last week its shares dropped after lowered its outlook to tweet demand for i phones in china deal with the world's biggest t.v. nacre could help apple expand its reach. to mexico now where fuel theft is a major economic problem along with violent criminal gangs the country's new president on that is manuel lopez obrador has vowed to solve the problem but his first step in fighting back is creating a whole new mess for the country. long lines at fuel stations drivers waiting patiently but without much hope most gas stations in mexico have run out of fuel since the government shut down a major pipeline and started delivering gas by tanker trucks only. lover of the earth thought. truth is really bad because we already went to several
7:44 pm
gas stations and we didn't find gasoline it's been three days already yes there's all this us that are it's a disaster it's a disaster everywhere and i've been to two gas stations already and they don't have any fuel look at this wells can they go. on. for years criminals have tapped into pipelines stealing millions of leaders of fuel and depriving the state run oil monopoly pemex of over seven billion dollars in revenue that's according to government estimates. this is not a petty theft we're talking about major robbery one thousand attacks on the pipeline per day and fifteen thousand liters stolen each time. how do they distribute all that stolen gasoline. well there was an attitude of
7:45 pm

we're preparing for plex it. demands have always been against britain leaving the e.u. and everything they've heard from london in the last two years makes them think bricks it is going to be a chaotic process. they've bought a water tank with a filter and because the u.k. gets some of its electricity from europe they're getting ready for power cuts. so we're being a bit balanced to me listicle not expect next be unexpected power cuts frequently more rationing of power much like the seventy's where there was set times of the day where there wouldn't be power. the whole family helps out with the weeding they hope that their home grown greens will soon be ready to eat. is all this a bit too much maybe. but midwife nuveen says they're simply going on what they've heard from their government. the u.k. government has then said they expect up to six months of. in imports running on fifteen to twenty percent efficiency i think. so

shin will only have had three weeks to integrate four players from north korea into the team a massive challenge in modern handball but the north koreans don't stand out much in training except for maybe their shoes which are the blue red and white of their flag. we felt a bit distant from each other when we first met the north koreans but you're going closer in the days we've spent together so i was and now we've become friends. and everything sounds rosy for the captain but his new teammate from north korea. has a more level take on this our first world championship we've got lots of expectations about what will experience and what we'll learn of course we also want to strong showing you. north and south korea made history with a united women's hockey team at the winter olympics and kyung chain of pre-selected north korean fans went by role in a p.r. coup for the regime but on the ice the first ever appearance of
