their further now i'm joined by mona eltahawy she has written extensively on feminism in the arab world she joins us tonight from montreal in canada good evening to you on a glad to have you on the show talked to me a little bit about the the situation for women in saudi arabia i know people are probably wondering is rojas alco nds is is her case is her plight similar to that of many other saudi women. yes right the only difference about rob's plight is that we've seen it play out so publicly which i believe is the main reason that it has saved up in the entire world was watching and advocating for too many cases go anonymously and we have no idea about it just to give you an idea of the magnitude of what's at stake there are at least fifteen feminists in saudi prison since may since the de facto ruler crown prince mohammed bin salmen instigated an
8:05 pm
unprecedented crackdown on women's rights activists and feminists and they have not been charged with anything they have not been put on trial one of them has been water boarded we usually associate the word waterboarding with terrorism and that's just to give you an idea that the saudi regime thinks that feminism is terrorism and other activists have been tortured using electric shocks and flogging and several of them have been subjected to sexual harassment and one has been threatened with rape and this is because they're fighting something called the guardianship system which is exactly what russia is escaping from exactly because as a woman she is not allowed to travel outside of the country without permission from her male guardian which is exactly what she did today you have called for a sexual revolution in the middle east as part of you know the reforms that need to take place there how is that going to happen in saudi arabia. well the crux of the
8:06 pm
sexual revolution that i'm calling for is the declaration i own my body from that declaration wanting to live freely and with dignity as rough words east part of the sexual revolution wanting to define for yourself what you do and don't believe is because of that now obviously i am in i wrote a book about this in which i go into greater lengths but for saudi arabia or any other country in the middle east and north africa it is essentially recognizing consent and agency as to principles that every woman must be able to enjoy and this is why again the guardianship system is the antithesis of this because the guardianship system subjects every woman girl in saudi arabia to the guardianship of a man to entire life from birth to death get health care so this is something that controls saudi women's lives and basically decimates consent and agency this is this is something that is completely normal in every day to me and you but this is
8:07 pm
radical inside saudi arabia do you think the crown prince who has been challenged as the resource. friends is he going to be the man he's going to make sure that women have equal rights. not raff will be the one who would ensure that women get equal rights the fifteen to seventeen feminists in saudi prison today being tortured because they want to get rid of the guardianship system of the ones who will bring women equal rights it is not a crown prince who has fooled the world and sadly the world has bought his life that he is an emancipator woman he is not he has not invented patriarchy but he is the current one in the long line of what i call gender apartheid in saudi arabia which limits almost every aspect of a woman's life so if you want to talk about freedom for saudi women it's the same minister in prison and it's this eighteen year old incredibly courageous young

8:11 pm
from the young man who's accused him of sexual assault. for the fifty nine year old actor this court appearance is the kind of return to the spotlight he would have preferred to avoid. it was in this nantucket bar that spacey is alleged to have plied a minor with alcoholic drinks and then sexually assault him and twenty sixteen the state prosecutor has not named the accuser. but heather a former news anchor has already said publicly that the accuser is her son who was a restaurant and toy at the time. spacey broke his silence on the allegations in a video two weeks ago he spoke in the voice of the criminal president he played in house of cards i know what you want. and you want me back. of course believed everything you know just been waiting with bated breath for him a confess it all but you wouldn't believe the worst without evidence or you would
8:12 pm
rush to judgment with facts would you. like this court case represents one of several allegations against the oscar winner. another actor anthony rapp says he was sexually harassed by spacey in october twenty seventeen. the judge has set the next court date for march fourth. all right let's cross over now to our correspondent my swager she's following the story for us from washington good evening to you miles so let's talk about where this case is taking place in massachusetts in like it and what happened there two years ago exactly. well yes we've heard a lot of allegations flying around and these are allegations that spacey himself has been rather forceful about tonight and even not only vs but since the beginning when accusations started flying he's been very vocal defending himself defending
8:13 pm
his career trying to salvage what's left of his legacy and what happened in that bar allegedly happened in that bar is potentially very incriminating especially considering the age of the accuser who was under age. at least alcohol alcohol wise at the time so the point is one of the. exactly that that is the point of all of the common thread in all of these accusations against ken spacey has been that it has been a lot of young men who have come forward or people who were young men at the time when they're alleging these assaults took place accusing him of at very least inappropriate behavior is you know worst criminal behavior is as a what happened in that bar is of course up to the courts to find out but it's not looking great for heaven yeah exactly i mean the who is making it via accusations
8:14 pm
in this case was eighteen at the time which makes him in the door but the drinking age is twenty one so allegedly he became drunk and that is where the crime began will there be other cases against speaks we know there are more accusations on through. absolutely this is a question that's been asked about a lot of these men have had to reckon with past behaviors because of the rise of this me to movement a lot of the allegations specifically against casey are simply very old they're out of what would be a statute of limitations this seems to be the one to watch right now he faces as we said five years in prison if he's found guilty but he has then as we've seen very vocal about defending himself saying that this is merely a smear campaign and there are no facts to support this my sweater on the story
8:15 pm
