i did mention to systems. global family starts january twenty third on t.w. . take football personally i do anything with a little bit wonderful people instantly that make the game so special. for all true fans dot com based on. little more than football online. going to. cheap clothes but at what price a german court is set to decide whether a clothing chain shares responsibility for deadly fire at one of its suppliers factories. and wages are rising in romania and that's proving a challenge for local firms will be a one business is doing to stay competitive. i'm stephen beard
12:17 pm
and welcome a court in germany is set to decide whether retailer kick can face a lawsuit for damages from a massive fire seven years ago at a factory in pakistan a factory was one of its key suppliers hundreds died in the blaze which was followed months later by the deadly collapse of another garment factory in bangladesh a kick argues that it is now too late to take legal action but the four victims behind the suit hope they can set a precedent more than two hundred fifty people lost their lives in this fire had a textile factory in the pakistani city of karachi back in two thousand and twelve it was reportedly an act of arson but the plaintiffs accuse germany's biggest close discounter of being partly responsible for the lack of sufficient fire protection at the site kick was one of the factories main clients the case also raises a more fundamental question related to globalization what responsibility to companies
12:18 pm
have for the condition of workers in low wage countries who supply them with cheap products keke has paid more than six million dollars for those affected by the fire that despite its call for the case to be thrown out due to the statute of limitations but whatever the outcome calls are growing for the law to provide more clarity on corporate liability. shovel shams from asia dusk and dawn has been following the case i asked him earlier if there was more than financial compensation at stake with this lawsuit. well the case is not about the compensation to victims and their families i believe it has a lot to do with it kind of sets a precedent. the golden dawn admits the case and i'll be going to dalton today to do the hearing if that happens set a precedent and the president is the companies. countries like pakistan
12:19 pm
and bangladesh and sri lanka they should be they should bear some responsibility to . the safety standards in these countries for example safety standards in. business because in these in these factories and these companies. we're seeing some pictures there of the conditions when the fire occurred remind us again how significant was this fire in pakistan and of course the rana plaza collapse in bangladesh was months after i think right. well at the moment i do not think that many pakistanis remember what happened in two thousand. it was a big. protests took place the trade unions you know you're. right but that has happened the safety standards. i think what is important is that it should be more important for the. people here in the west the consumers
12:20 pm
they need to put more pressure on the companies that they must do something what is happening in these countries. more important question is it is important for the rest of the consumers. in my opinion. this isn't the only court case related to this fire of course there's also something occurring in pakistan relating to the contracting company he sort of explain what the difference is between. investigating a number of issues because it was claimed that it was. a political body was involved so what is happening in germany is different from what is happening in the legal procedure in the case.
12:21 pm
but we know the legal system in pakistan is as good as what we have in germany in the rest. of time and political factors. but it has nothing to do with with. is going to happen today. so a lot of eyes will be on this case. thank you. now over to the auto industry folks wagon and ford will join forces in the effort to develop new technologies the two companies are set to unveil details of a deeper alliance at the detroit auto show next week sources close to management say the carmakers are hoping to fend off rivals in electric and autonomous driving technologies among them software companies like google and other reason for working together continuing trade frictions between the u.s. e.u. and china. ford have said in the past that any alliance would not involve merger.
12:22 pm
now let's dig deeper into the story with bars our correspondent the frankfurt stock exchange two big car companies one from europe one from the u.s. of the major players out there what are they getting out of what is this a partnership alliance. yeah we don't know yet the details according to the reports are set to be released when the detroit motor show gets going next week and of course everybody's interested what exactly this entails but we hear that it entails pooling resources in order to be more effective and more cost effective also getting into the future of the car business that is self driving cars and electric cars and that's a huge challenge not only from the engineering standpoint but also organizing production perhaps reorganizing production and also of course stemming all the money that has to be stemmed for for financing all of this together i think the two
12:23 pm
see a chance to get ahead of the game for other companies and especially from the v.w. side cost saving will be a big motive for entering into such a venture. and that was only bards for us in frankfurt now staying in the auto world like volkswagen before it chrysler has fallen afoul of us authorities in the diesel diesel emissions candle it's now due to pay more than seven hundred million dollars in a settlement the u.s. italian carmakers accused of using illegal software and more than one hundred thousand of its jeep cherokee s.u.v.s and ram pickups it however denies any wrongdoing and settlement is a far cry from volkswagens the german automaker has already paid more than twenty billion dollars in the u.s. alone meanwhile fia chrysler says it will issue an emissions recall for the affected vehicles but will not offer to buy them back. now in europe in romania a series of minimum wage hikes including one this year have lifted consumption and
12:24 pm
boost growth the downside businesses are finding it hard to compete overseas now they're looking for solutions in every possible corner. high and printed circuit boards are an important component in self driving cars only a handful of companies around the world manufacture them among them is how reyes the german firm has a factory in the romanian city of to mishra and is one of many western companies choosing to make high tech products in the eastern european country. the motivation for coming to remain here was not primarily cheap labor or race doesn't need that it was for the highly qualified engineers and specialists around to mishra. there's no shortage of work in the city. romanian company net x. employs technicians and i t specialists the company's services include designing web pages bookkeeping and
12:25 pm
dispatching goods but finding cheap skilled labor in romania isn't as easy as it used to be a company owner and there has already moved hundreds of jobs to countries like ukraine where wages are lower she believes romania is consistently strong annual growth rate of more than five percent is actually doing more damage than good. the engine of economic growth is totally artificial it was generated by the government increasing the minimum wage so this growth has to do with consumption. and in fact the economy has suffered a lot as a result of the minimum wage being hiked without an associated increase in productivity. wage increases of up to thirty percent have put rumanian companies under pressure one of them is metropole it used to produce goods for companies abroad but higher wages at home made it less competitive that prompted

entrepreneurs to start manufacturing his own products flags advertising material and sports kits. because not everything can be produced in china you know flexibility and quick delivery times will be very important in the future. thanks to high speed internet the company is able to process orders from abroad quickly it's also been investing in automation in order to avoid paying monthly salaries of over one thousand euros this human operated laser cutting machine is to be replaced by a camera operated automated system. complete with helping to replace to three or four jobs. rumania is changing fast the signs are everywhere many of the roads and now too narrow to accommodate the number of new cars. and more trouble for travelers on the horizon as security workers at three german
