paychecks we meet workers in washington who's been forced to take on new jobs just to make ends meet. and once they were born in callahan's the german women's team has started of late these glory days of the euro some twenty thirteen seem a long time ago can germany take full again in time for the most welcome. from having a home from home free welcome to the program heavy snow has brought chaos to pulse of europe and there's no sign that the situation will improve anytime soon more than twenty people have now died in what is some of the heaviest snowfall in two decades and for costas say that more snow is on the way to use on the n s it is in one of the worst affected areas in austria where the biggest fear now is avalanches . warning. over one hundred people have been forced to evacuate

a few come back to clear their roofs or driveways in a constant battle with the snow it has been snowing out here for nearly two weeks the residents tell us they haven't seen anything like it in over a decade was a break in the weather now the sun is out but even if the sun shines it does not mean the danger of avalanches is gone the snow is accumulated it's sitting there and it could fall off the mountain onto these houses at any time breaks in the snow fall had been only temporary here and. the residents are getting on with their lives even if that means hard work. thank you used to a lot of snow but it's a bit rough this time because we've had so much at once so far my colleague you're going through the overnight shift trying to clear just the top layer the new stuff cuz if it rains into this then it will become really heavy up in the middle of. the

village is normally packed with tourists at this time of the year and stayed luxury hotels like this one have opened their doors to evacuees free of charge. he has pulled together before in two thousand and six he had to evacuate for a few days. it's that community spirit that locals say will help them through again avalanche are not. and covering this story for us is the w.'s only in east if he's in the austrian town of say good to see you tell us how are people coping. well most of the people we talked to are pretty proud of their spirit here proud of their ability to deal with snow they say they've dealt with it before but they also say that they've never seen anything like this in their in their lifetime some have likened it to two thousand and six when there was a snowstorm but it just wasn't this bad people are working around the clock like i said the they have the equipment they need to get through this but for some it's

become a part time job just to clear the snow we met some guys yesterday who were up on the roof we asked them how long they've been up there they said well it takes it took them two days to get just half of the roof cleared working too like two people up there so it's really a full time job. for a lot of people but of course the biggest fear here is an avalanche now in this part that i'm standing right now there is no avalanche there is no avalanche warning it's just for the people that are in this kind of narrow valley that sits under a bucket of snow on the mountain and you can hear helicopters trying to get rid of avalanches. they can detonate an explosion and trigger an avalanche but they can't do it here because there are houses under there and those people have had to evacuate right so clearly a sense of resilience where you are that i mean what are you hearing from the other side in towns in the region. we talked to the austrian

military and they are very hopeful about where this is going there very optimistic about their ability to free all of the villages that have been snowed in earlier this week there was about two thousand two hundred people in villages that were completely snowed in that means no access to the outside world just living off the resources and you can see the fire patrol is also helping out here and not just the military everybody's pitching in but yeah so in the mountains there is not only one thousand five hundred people stuck they cleared a path to a village that had quite a few people in there yesterday that was a big success of the week right and not to quash that sense of optimism and hope that from authorities about the job they're doing but of course the situation isn't over yet we know that more snow is full cost so how are people preparing for that. that's right there's just snow snow snow in the forecast if you check your phone

you look at the weather it's snow all week nobody knows when this is going to let up actually that we just heard this morning that the snow up on the mountain is five meters deep and they won't be able to measure it soon because the measuring center will be completely buried in so that gives you an idea of what where this is going. the thing is that even if the weather lets up even if the sun comes out even if it rains that does not reduce the risk of roof caving in or avalanches because water is heavier than snow it will sit on a roof and will create a sit very very dangerous situation and of course for avalanches the problem is that snow which weighs tons and tons and tons and comes down like a train is just sitting there waiting to go and sun and rain can trigger that morris potentially in measurable amounts of snow where you are in the austrian town of onion he says all reported there thank you very much indeed thank you.

in the partial government shutdown is now entering its twenty second day making it the longest in the country's history as the round wave of funding president donald trump southern border wall drags on as a result some eight hundred thousand workers have not been paid receiving wait shit showing nothing zero and as a washington correspondent my sway to reports many government workers are now turning to alternative employment. for rent is due you got bills and there's no sign of a paycheck coming anytime soon so maybe if you're a government worker it's time to find a second job the fairfax county school district outside of washington d.c. has a shortage of substitute teachers and fairfax county now has an excess of furloughed government workers problem solution at least temporarily so that twenty percent of the population in the greater d.c. area works for the federal government that's now one in five people with no paycheck and nothing to do for. who knows how much longer but even with the dire

predictions coming out of capitol hill this local community saw an opportunity to do something for their people but when the school district advertised the event it filled up to capacity within twenty four hours the interest was so overwhelming that they added a second and then a third hiring day well it usually takes a few weeks to be approved as a new substitute teacher these people will all be processed and ready to work in just a few days the school board says it's really the least they can do for employees here really realize that we have a community in need right now we have many displaced federal workers and as part of our caring culture this is just a small gesture to be able to be out and help and support our displaced federal workers and give opportunity to substitute in our schools and earn a paycheck we've heard lots of teachers in the classroom are actually thrilled to have this influx of talent as you know we have people in the federal government who have all sorts of skills whether they're in mathematics statistics and medicine so just bringing that into the classroom will have

a big effect on our students. the shutdown could and any time many federal employees at the event said they're doing ok for now but in the meantime they want a contingency plan and the whole situation is disheartening. two thousand and thirteen shut down over the affordable care act so. that was a little bit different the situation there was more talking between the president and congress and the senate so this was all first starting because there's really no. no discussion or very little discussion. i'm frustrated. because i think. services to the citizens are being compromised there and even behind the scenes when a government is shut down people don't realize even when you. we have served in national parks we've served museums we never know what unobservable things are not getting done i don't know right now it's looks like it's at

german women's football team has won six european championships in a row since one nine hundred ninety five but two years ago only managed to reach the quarterfinals of the euros this year the world cup is coming and alone so the question of whether germany nearly he's a bump in the road or if the glory days are truly over. the germany women's football team have an outstanding resume two time world champions takes time european champions and twenty sixteen olympic winners but the golden days seem to be over as other countries are starting to catch up. until we sure do something we missed out on creating a playing style for our women's national team one that represents all virtues we have to think about what they are and what they were. on from. their coach to being. potsdam for forty years winning the women's champions league twice and won just to get clubs like frankfurt involves board dominated that competition for

years but there's been a shift french side all the in peak leon have won the last three in a row england two is witnessing a change big clubs like manchester city and chelsea are investing heavily in women's football i can see. i think the role of women in society has also changed when i think moments football has become more professional and it was more people are recognizing its potential cunto the he's put in selling phone for especially the heightened competition in europe is also being felt by of all sport the defending bonus league champions have players from ten different countries but holding on to their best is becoming a real problem i don't get over problems a slowly rising money comes to buy a new player as simple and keeping up with sally race in the european market can those problems could mean a long road ahead as german clubs and the national team aim to get back to winning ways. you're watching news from by name plenty more coming up at the top of the
