5:09 pm
condemned the bombing fears have been rising that the political turmoil surrounding bricks it could lead to a return to widespread sectarian violence in northern ireland it was ended by a nine hundred ninety eight peace deal known as the good friday agreement now joining me in the studio to break this story down for us is reporter pablo foley welcome tell us about the blast first off well the latest information that we have is that two men and their twenty's have been arrested by the police in northern ireland the police there said that a pizza delivery van was hijacked by two armed men in the city and then several hours later the bomb blast went off in the center of town in front of the courthouse there and the p.s. and i guess the police service of northern ireland said there was a very significant attempt to kill people here in this community so you know very serious words there and there's been widespread condemnation understandably from. here in northern ireland and in fact in the republic of ireland the foreign
5:10 pm
minister and he was very clear and he said that he condemned the bomb car bomb terrorist attack in derry this evening and he said there's no place or justification for it now there was also a statement from the secretary of state of northern ireland and she said that our voices across the political spectrum are united intolerable violence there's no place for it i mean want to move forward and build a peaceful future for all in northern arc as you mentioned there before of course there has been a peace treaty in northern ireland since one thousand nine hundred ninety eight the police in northern ireland have also said that they suspect it was possibly carried out by. dissident republican group called the new ira run who are they well the new lawyer a was formed in twenty twelve they believe by a number of dissident republicans organizations that they said they were unifying under wouldn't leadership then we have to go back to one thousand nine hundred eight of course for when this peace deal was signed from both sides in the conflict
5:11 pm
in northern ireland agreeing that they would move forward and set up a center be a power sharing executive there and there were many people on both sides who were against this peace treaty and notably of course from the republican side now those people have more or less remained fairly quiet but there has been violence in the past number of years we can't forget of course that this group is believed to be responsible for a number of attacks including the murders of prison oftener prison officers david black and adrian is made just a couple of years ago so violence has been present in northern ireland in recent years but very a lot less so than we saw before nine hundred ninety eight well before nine hundred ninety eight as you know better than i do three thousand people approximately killed in three decades of violence brecht's that is less than two months away is there a risk of returning to all that well this is being one of the main issues of course there is now a fluid border we'll call it between the republic of ireland and northern ireland
5:12 pm
people cross the border many times on several times per day derry is just several kilometers from the border with the republic of ireland and of course it's an issue of symbolism for many people is the fact that there is no checkpoint there are no british army officers on the border it's a fluid border where people cross and that has helped many people to sort of come to people in many respects and there has been peace in northern ireland and there have been many strides made by people on both sides to build a future together but of course is two key issues here one there has been no government in northern ireland for the past two years and if there is a return to a hard border there are many fears that this is going to anger people from particularly those groups who are not am in favor of remaining part of the united kingdom ok thank you very much for that insight.
