a chicago museum. that the o.p.'s question is you know. all the call survivor up close is bearing witness in the twenty first century. i'm broad thomas thanks so much for being with us today two of the major players in the syrian conflict are set to meet for talks that could have broad implications for that country russian president vladimir putin is hosting his turkish counterpart. now topping their agenda is the future of syria's kurdish controlled areas kurdish militias control much of northern syria after pushing out so-called as long as state i-s. has now lost almost all of the territory it once controlled in syria and that's led president trump to withdraw all the two thousand or so american troops supporting

the kurdish militia. erda one regards the kurdish militia as terrorists and sees their presence along turkey's border as a threat to its national security now in a phone call with president trump he proposed a turkish controlled safe zone along turkey's southern border there in the north of syria turkey is also seeking control of mung beach that's a city the kurds captured from i-s. back in two thousand and sixteen with the u.s. poised to withdraw the kurds are trying to avoid a full on turkish military assault and of turn to russia for diplomatic help the kurds have long dreamed of one day establishing an autonomous region in northern syria but strategically the position of kurdish forces has become precarious in the wake of washington's planned withdrawal. this was the scene in northeast syria two days ago when a convoy of u.s.

and kurdish led troops was bombed in an attack claimed by islamic state. and exactly one week ago in kurdish held man bitch near the turkish border. in. another apparent i asked attack that killed four americans. despite the ongoing fighting washington remains committed to withdrawing its troops meaning syria's kurds are about to lose a powerful ally then there's the issue of a safe zone along the border with turkey a u.s. proposal. but who should create it and who should police it for russia which backs syria's government forces the answer is clear. we are convinced the best and only solution is the transfer of these territories to the control of the syrian government the syrian security forces on the ministers of

functions. but turkey equally wants control of this buffer zone to protect against what it sees as the kurdish threat you are liberal your thicky views our proposal for a safe certainly comes with the goal of keeping terrorists and terror organizations away from our borders. ancora insists syrian kurdish fighters are linked to the kurdish rebel group the p.k. k. widely branded a terrorist organization it doesn't want syrian kurdish militia gaining power on its borders fearing that might encourage the kurdish insurgency inside turkey. this time last year turkey launched its military operation on the former kurdish enclave of a freen in northern syria kurds marked the anniversary with protests they have reason to fear that turkey will strike again that's why kurdish fighters are now

reaching out to syrian government troops for protection. so what's in store for northern syria did have years and may share one as in moscow where those talks on syria are underway today and lay the planned u.s. withdrawal from syria would leave a power vacuum in the area how does the kremlin want to fill it. well absolutely the announcement of the u.s. u.s. withdrawal would have been basically music to russia's ears if the u.s. withdraws its troop troops as it says then russia will be largely in control of syria's skies and also russ that russia will essentially be the only non regional power at the bargaining table and with a stake in syria's future now russia has been saying all along that actually the u.s. is as they say an occupying force in syria because its presence has not been agreed with the syrian government who russia very much still see as the rightful.

government in syria and this kind of hints as well as what putin wants which is basically to consolidate the power of the syrian government in syria in order for russia also to have a stake in syria's future including as a military state they want a foothold in the middle east i'm not so what they're trying to get out of this whole situation ok well turkey has a very different view it's proposed a safe zone going thirty two kilometers into syria that it would control could sit in with russia's strategic interests in northern syria. well the safe zone is certainly something that turkey has been pushing for very strongly. and i think it's very much a turkish plan so it could be kind of something that russia would be willing to compromise on however russia also knows that the assad regime the assad government

have been strongly against a turkish controlled safe zone they have come out and said that is categorically not ok with them and putin has previously proposed a sort of compromise where syrian government could truly could be in charge of that safe zone and we heard in the report as well that love rauf said this month that that is the only solution for those territories to be kind of passed over to to syrian control and he also welcomed the fact that the syrian government has been holding talks with kurdish forces so that could perhaps be a sort of compromise on the table today turkey get some kind of a safe zone and russia. keeps the syrian government in charge of that area that could be a possible solution today ok we'll see what these talks come up was sure one for us in moscow thanks very much. off look at some of the other stories making news this
