space agency is working to solve mankind's problems from above. how poker skills can get you back next big promotion. we're here at the back magic mountain famous german writer thomas mann immortalized in this building a former senator for tuberculosis patients when he wrote about life in this facility in one nine hundred twenty four much has changed since then including the way we deal with illnesses in the future it could be robots taking care of us that's in part thanks to artificial intelligence a topic very present here in davos and i'm not only talking about the world economic forum. this little paper figure moves as if by magic it's the brainchild of pupils at a school in the swiss town of davos they programmed the small machines themselves and are showing visitors at the world economic forum what they can do artificial intelligence no not quite. the same deal again says for me for me artificial
6:18 pm
intelligence is somehow like a robot that can just really move things like a person. what we're doing here is more like creating little movements with robots or programming kalina be a vehicle in the middle getting sesame to program even here. despite that modest assessment it's the young generation that will be carving out the new era of artificial intelligence. so it is in a hassling our ability to solve problems and across collaborative way across sectors business government technology as well as nonprofit organizations so i think there's a lot of promise in artificial intelligence and there's also a lot of concerns one major concern is jobs according to one study in just a few years time robots and intelligent machines will be doing more work than human beings that's a thought that makes many people shot or others however take
6:19 pm
a more optimistic view i think is going to create jobs and for for the developed countries it will help us position ourselves at a place where we haven't been for many many years if you take if you look at europe there's hardly any software industry left other than small ones where as an artificial intelligence we have a chance to really play big we just need some governments and some institutions to get a and agenda behind it and make it a bigger play than it is today. artificial intelligence is a major topic at the world economic forum many see it as the business of the future as a tool for solving problems but there is also concern over the potential for misuse some are calling for. ethical guidelines to be produced and for the promotion of diversity and programming. so what we need to do so make sure that ai is relevant to the entire world is to make sure that the developers of algorithms are

also who come from around the world artificial intelligence is said to conquer ever more areas of our lives in the years ahead. are ahead of the curve. given the very low temperatures here in davos it's easy to forget that the world has a massive problem called global warming raising awareness for the fight against climate change require some extreme measures scientists decided to sleep here in these tents and invited as many people as possible to give global warming a thought and step out of their comfort zone. most people in davos this week live in warm hotels but there are exceptions polish scientists the team of fifteen international researchers and crew have been camping here in subzero temperatures for the past few days and nights the worst part of sleeping in the tent is actually getting idea sleeping bag in the morning because then you actually back into the call you see a lady of warm little crew and into the cold. but the residents of this arctic base
6:21 pm
come on not camping out just to cut costs from a science perspective we try to give the reality check we try to give the evidence which is without question worrying the arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet those change the same right across the arctic. the team of been setting up their replica of an arctic base camp for three years now in davos using the space to host events about climate change and sustainability. according to the researchers economic interest on protecting the environment do not have to be at odds. the full cost of climate change is in the trillions of us dollars without question that if we continue business as usual it will be very expensive our data definitely shows from an economic perspective it makes sense to save the arctic sea ice. on the scientists will keep camping out of the form until the global sea is genuinely warm to their message. we already know that the world

economic forum works internationally trying to bring the world together but sometimes is also transcending the frontiers of our planet i'm now joined by alice byrne she is the international director of the u.k. space agency thank you very much for joining us here on the w. and i'm going to start with a question you have answered many many times but of course we also want to know what is going to happen after breakfast considering that your work can almost impossibly be done without the international cooperation yeah absolutely nasa space is a truly international endeavor it will always remain the case so we work internationally already primarily through the european space agency to support a lot of r. and d. in collaboration with the rest of europe but we also cooperate internationally on the safety of the operating environment and that's something that's increasingly important so i feel very confident that we will continue strong international partnerships in the u.k. space sector and how would it work with the european space agency change so we will
6:23 pm
remain a very strong participant to the european space agency we are looking forward to the ministerial meeting at the end of this year when member states make commitments to new programs and you know you may know the last such meeting was in the back end of twenty sixteen we had already had a referendum votes and at that ministerial meeting we were the number one subscriber. all of the european space agency applications programs it's a very strong sign now you have been talking to many leaders about many possible solutions that we can't even think of if we don't know the space if you will could you give me an example of how you are working here at the world economic oh it's incredible the uplink ability of space technology to some of the discussions happening at davos this week is incredible so in the u.k. we're very proud to have our own international partnerships program it's one hundred fifty million pound program working with twenty nine different developing countries tackling ten different sustainable development goals to give you an example of what that might look like we've got an amazing project at the moment
6:24 pm
with vietnam it's using it's using that unique vantage point of space to give you a really wide scale perspective to look at water levels we can then link that information on the water levels with mosquito breaks and we can then link the mosquito outbreaks with outbreaks in twenty feet or so effectively you begin to get a predictive capability for some of these you know truly horrendous diseases affecting the world and if you can do that for twenty feet i think of all the other mosquito borne diseases that you can begin to tackle it's really phenomenal really fascinating now let's talk about the actors in space because we also have private companies offering for example tourism in recent years do you think there is a challenge considering that no one really owns based on how this is going to go yet it's a challenge that's why we will continue to cooperate internationally i mean it's right now there's over one hundred countries with space programs and we're seeing this very interesting trend where you've got an increasing number of entrepreneurs . characters like. running their own space programs but we have to cooperate
6:25 pm
on the operating environment and we have to work very hard to make sure that we all follow the same rules of the road in space i'm working in particular with the world economic forum on an initiative that is industry led to demonstrate that best practice sustainable operations in space thinking outside the box thank you very much international director of the u.k. space agency for the insight. of course there is a lot to learn when you visit the world economic forum most panels focus on complex solutions for very complex problems of the future but others offer very practical advice like our game can actually change your life i'm about to meet maria conic of a best selling author turned poker champion and i want to know what a poke a novice like me can learn from the game in business and in life on it you know lee not only was not in booker it's never played or it's never had any desire to get a bill or to do anything like that but i became very interested in the nature of.
6:26 pm
that's why maria conic of us started playing poker two years ago to do research for a new book but she quickly started winning high stakes tournaments and got so good that she even took a break in writing to this you hope a korea. think poker is the best way to help her feel like decision making skills you have to be so conscious of your emotional reactions because they're going to your decision making and they're going to make you make a perfect decision to poker has actually. made me better able to. say you know i've played my best way i can play it let me focus on really controlling what i can try bluffing can also be very important in business knowing i'll be delighted if the patient has left the other person as to when they're coming. down and if you don't have any for me evidence of that in all their own race to see that your

car this is a show that he's new to the red cross was interested in just to look for and they come to believe that the world would be a much better place to live that if they think it's going to make you a happier person with a better life. i could need a lesson in a lot of what you mentioned maybe i should start learning poker too. and that's all for this special edition of e.w. business from davos and the magic back we're going to go grab some hot chocolate you stay tuned and remember you can always stay up to date with all things the world economic forum on our website that's the w dot com and an hour of commercial .
