sumi so much going to thank you for joining us greek lawmakers have ratified a landmark name change deal with macedonia under the agreement greece's northern neighbor will rename itself north macedonia and athens will drop its objection to the country joining nato but the deal faced fierce opposition and greece and has already cost prime minister alexis tsipras his parliamentary majority there were more protests outside the assembly ahead of the vote although torrential rain in athens kept many demonstrators away friday's vote was delayed by a day to accommodate the large number of lawmakers who wanted to debate the deal further. let's bring in our correspondent at the chorus of issues in the greek capital athens for us hi andy so the greek parliament did go ahead and approve this name change but it was a narrow vote wasn't it. absolutely one hundred fifty three
5:02 pm
steps just shoot over the one fifty one which the prime minister needed it's enough however to ratify this agreement and it's enough to serve the prime minister alexis tsipras a significant a major diplomatic victory in this after a tumultuous week and tumultuous events violent protests and a political turbulence that nearly cost him his government so he's if there is it is so it's no surprise that he's calling this a historic deal a historic moment one that normalizes relations between greece and macedonia after thirty years of almost toxic relations it remains to be seen however how this will go down with the rest of the people seven in ten greeks here continue to oppose this deal yancey it has been to mulch was on the streets as well there have
5:03 pm
been violent protests do you think that this vote could finally calm things down. no it will not come things down greeks are very impassioned and they're very they feel very very strong about this deal we understand that there are several mayors across the country who have submitted their resignations in protest we don't know what more will unravel on the political spectrum and we don't know how this this deal will be accepted if at all by the people don't forget the ratification is one thing their terms of the agreement would say that was in the next few months there are several details that have to be ironed out the tween these two sides for example scratches that there are references to alexander the great greek laurier and other ancient greek emblems have to be taken down from the macedonian side
5:04 pm
their whole so trade issues over how to deal with these things so we will there will be several samplings are along the way and they just briefly if you can if the public is not in support of this what is the government doing to assure the people of greece that the solution ending the suspect is in their best interest. well again the prime minister these past couple of days has been trying to assure agree that this is ultimately in the interest of greece that it normalizes relations between these two balkan states and normalizes and bring stability to this volatile region the balkans by limiting the influence of russia and anchoring macedonia straight to the west primarily to the e.u. and nato but again. passions are high here and we expect to see more

political developments are right at the cross over for us in athens thank you so much. now to some other stories making headlines around the world roger stone a longtime ally of u.s. president donald trump has been arrested she's been charged with obstruction of justice witness tampering and making false statements the charges are in connection with u.s. special counsel robert muller's investigation into alleged links between the trunk campaign and russia in the twenty six thousand election a referendum in the southern philippines has given overwhelming approval to the formation of a new muslim autonomous region it is hoped that the move will bring peace to the area and much needed investment now creating the bung some moto autonomous region was part of a deal between the government and the largest muslim rebel group which is spent decades fighting for independence. and britain's queen elizabeth has called for opposing factions in the u.k. to find quote common ground her statement is seen as
5:06 pm
a veiled plea to end the bitter fighting over brags that as the march deadline looms for britain's exit from the european union as head of state the queen is expected to remain politically neutral in public. un human rights chief michele bachelet has called for talks to deescalate the situation in venezuela she also called for an investigation into claims that venezuelan security forces have killed at least twenty protesters they allege a crackdown followed a bid by the opposition leader won by the will to oust president nicolas maduro about bhutto says he's the victim of a u.s. led kuwait and has cut off diplomatic ties with washington. a defines nicolas maduro has gone on the offensive severing diplomatic relations with the u.s. a day after washington codman duros regime in egypt amount i. get it all couldn't move i think there is no doubt in the world that donald trump
5:07 pm
wants to bring in his own de facto unconstitutional government a coup d'etat in venezuela against the people and democracy. let there be no doubt that donald trump in all his madness believes himself to be the world's police believes that he is the boss of latin america and the caribbean. washington has refused to comply with mn duros orders to close its embassy in caracas but still instructed non-essential staff to leave the country the u.s. has put its support behind opposition leader one guy doe washington wants to increase pressure on the duro by starving his regime the funds we're focusing on today is disconnecting the illegitimate doro regime from the sources of its revenues we think consistent with our recognition one why go is the constitutional interim president of venezuela that those revenues should go to get him a government but madeira who has his own international backers moscow in particular
5:08 pm
has been propping up his socialist government with arms deliveries and loans and within venezuela itself both the military and the supreme court has reaffirmed their support from a during. his rival one fido meanwhile has gone underground his whereabouts have been a mystery since he was symbolically sworn in on wednesday before tens of thousands of cheering supporters he made his first public comments since then from an undisclosed location. based do. you know what are you also offering amnesty to nicolas maduro. that would have to be looked at. he's also a public employee unfortunately though he's also a dictator and responsible for yesterday's victims of the. remnants of the turmoil in caracas earlier this week are slowly being removed more than twenty people were killed in violent protests and there are fears of further unrest as the standoff between duro and the opposition continues. let's go right to crack ass our
5:09 pm
correspondent is standing by for us there hi oskar bring us up to date i understand that supporters of the opposition leader why though are gathering there again that what is the situation right now in caracas well there is a real tension in the air yesterday the national assembly last two quarters to get it out to us in the shock we were good were people are expected to see one way go also expected to speak today was a little less motivated now when they got it in an interview earlier that he is aware that he could go to prison today but he is expected to make an appearance what was most people as the by the protests in doing that service not informed the u.s. human rights commissioner is still much of it issued a statement today urging an investigation to at least twenty girls caused by the repression of these protests throughout this week so more violence is expected as the political conflict persists asco where is the so heading you know my little
5:10 pm
does have the military behind him is there any indication that he would actually back down here. well it's hard to say because his rhetoric is defiant but we are definitely seeing tensions running high with danielle and forces and the rest of the institutions that support level when there is a clear aggressor audience with fans who take an action you just don't know what that action is going to be at this time and as time runs out for the u.s. diplomats to leave venezuela on sunday so does a lot of the strength and credibility to focus not only on the seventy two hour alternating for us to lead the country who are in prison in one way go exactly finding stand out where there is no clear out on the hand that washington is not saying it's going to try to divert revenues to his rival one by the all who is the in hiding as we said he's been in hiding is that a credible threat and how much damage would that actually do to moodle. well yes it is a boot credible threat considering the u.s.
5:11 pm
is vital it's big it's clear and oil industry that is at its lowest production in history of this one not only three it's the already crippled economy and that was one government has been handling without any advancement resolvable it so i don't see that the twenty million dollars and immaterial aid the u.s. announced to one without these are really important tools for the political and diplomatic game being played in venezuela at this moment and oscar just you know pretty briefly if you can hear what about the pressure building up here in europe germany's demanding immediate elections and venezuela says if they don't take place it will also push for an iraq admission away though how significant is that for motherhood oh. well we cannot speculate it's an important step we saw how this riddle must have to specify they were supporting the national assembly today we see a clearer picture of what it means so it is very important pressure on us to take action and say well what's going to happen in venezuela in the coming years
5:12 pm
all right our correspondent our scotch thinker for us in caracas following all the latest developments thank you so much. in indonesia authorities say floods and landslides have killed at least fifty nine people heavy rain has pounded south sulawesi province that caused reverse to burst their banks thousands have been forced to flee their homes and the country's disaster management agency says twenty five people are still missing. the high water mark may already be behind them. but the danger has far from subsided on slow easy on land. at least three thousand people were forced to leave their homes as rivers burst their banks and hillsides gave way under the heavy rains. and flooding is hardly a rarity here during monsoon season. but still residents say they were caught unawares one of them that it made the water started to rise here but then suddenly
5:13 pm
a nearby river burst its banks after ten minutes the water was already a metre and a half high we didn't expect it at all but. emergency shelters have been erected in local mosques. the military has been deployed throughout the island. their first challenge keeping evacuees warm and fed. was that they're starving they are kids asking for milk and fades it's hard to get to them. rescuers continue to pull people from the water throughout the island. however with dozens missing and many villages still under water the they warn that the number of the dead will continue to rise. in the getting done. now today could see the beginning of a big change in germany's energy industry the government wants to close the country's lignite coal mines so the country's coal commission is needing in berlin
5:14 pm
to decide how to move forward now there is a lot at stake there around twenty one thousand jobs that depend directly on lignite that's a type of soft coal that's a heavy pollutant that if you add the suppliers and the sub contractors that number actually increases to around seventy thousand jobs that lignite is still the source of around twenty two percent of germany's energy production so it is an ambitious goal to replace it with renewables in just a few years we'll get more on that decision in a moment but first clean energy campaigners gather to make their views known in berlin today. school can wait for lucas like now today he and his classmates have driven three hours from lubec to join a student demonstration in berlin they are here to protest about climate change. what you are. the general problem is that there's not a lack of knowledge but of action that's why it's good to go in the streets now and express our views but we'll see what will come out of it. going over the christmas
5:15 pm
and. these young students are demanding action from those sitting in the building across the street the german coal commission a group of experts that advises the german government on how to end coal production economics minister peter altmire wants that this is about more than just climate change. then. if we act smart there will be no losers there will only be winners and we'll be supporting those regions affected by structural change and the government must stay committed to its climate policy goals. it's not clear if the politicians are listening to the school students but the young demonstrators have caught the attention of chinese artist and activist i way way. they're taking responsibility. clearly states their mind and they have to say stop it you know we we have enough
5:16 pm
regardless of the outcome today lucas and his fellow demonstrators are set on their gold. our political correspondent simon young followed the coal summit for us hi simon good to see you so this is a pretty heated debate and jobs are dependent on this industry but there are also big climate policy goals to meet that germany is falling behind on what is the commission going to do. you know this commission is there to make recommendations to the politicians but whatever they recommend it's clear that the government will have to spend billions of euros to help with the transition away from coal and it will be a money that will need to be spent to be spent to help the companies that produce the coal make that transition but also to help energy uses because there is concern that of course energy prices could go up but it's also about the structural
5:17 pm
economy in the regions where coal is produced around germany and supporting them as they go through this difficult transition or you know the question that this coal commission is looking at that it perhaps seems like a technical one it but it's actually a political one how quickly can you make these changes those environmental protesters are showing the environmental pressure to do it quickly is definitely growing but if you do it too quickly you could plunge certain regions of the country into economic difficulty and also threaten germany's energy stability sam you said it yourself this could cost the government billions according to some estimates the turning away from core coal and how is the government going to pay for that. yeah it's a really difficult thing to do and as we've said you know more than a fifth of germany's energy production still comes from coal energy users are
5:18 pm
already paying a premium to help help with the costs of the transition away from coal but what i think is clear as i say is that this is going to have to come from central government you know that the numbers are huge france is one that one of the big coal unions today was saying that five billion euros would be needed alone to you know help people he's jobs are going to be under threat as a result of this transition right our political correspondent simon young covering the story for us thank you simon. to sports now and germany is currently co-hosting the world championships in a sport that many in the english speaking world might not be familiar with and that's handball arena have been packed with fans from around the world excitement is building here in germany out of the country semifinal clash against norway tonight. the main train station in the northern german city of kiel.

year the dives into dwindling exports or by global trade conflict and a lack of clarity over breaks it domestic demand meanwhile. is expected to remain intact. over to booze in our financial correspondent in frankfurt part of the stock market's reaction to this was rather muted the fourth week of twenty nineteen was another strong while this is optimism coming from. you know might sound counter-intuitive but the fact that there are so many things to worry about gives investors reason to buy stocks the reasoning goes like this the weaker the economy the greater the chances that interest rates in the euro area will remain low super low much longer than anticipated up until now the european central bank also might be
5:23 pm
inclined to prolong the phasing out of its quantitative easing you know the bomb purchases this scenario is what's driving stock prices here in europe was also playing into this is the government shutdown in the united states which is bad for american stocks but good for european stocks while the german share index dax compared to last friday is higher the dow jones industrial average and the nasdaq composite index both are trading lower than last friday come out let's look ahead what will be important on the markets next week. well a couple of earnings reports are you know hotly anticipated on the trading floors here in germany for example s.a.p and the bank will open their books also from other countries a few big ones philips for example amazon apple facebook and in terms of politics well the vice premier of china you will hear will travel to washington with a delegation in order to discuss
