a bad deal also coming up venezuela's self declared president wraps up his revolt of one point zero balance balance to keep fighting until the country gets a new transitional government the u.n. security council is set to discuss the crisis in an emergency session today but its members have different ideas on who to back. and it's a nordic head to head a handful of cops norway wins that semifinal against germany and now takes on hosts denmark. i-man ukip as mackinnon thanks so much for joining us the longest government shutdown in the history of the united states is at least for now the five days into the standoff with. lawmakers president donald trump has passed

a short term funding bill to temporarily reopen the government but his funding request for a five point seven billion dollars border wall with mexico the issue that starts at the deadlock is not part of the deal. i this was the announcement federal employees across the country have been waiting for and not just them thank you very much my fellow americans i am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government trump agreed to temporarily reopen the government until mid february even without having received the funding for his key request a wall on the border to mexico his retreat came after intensifying delays at some of the nation's biggest airports and another missed pay day for hundreds of

thousands of federal workers the american people do not like it when you throw a wrench into the into the lives of government workers over an unrelated political dispute working people throughout america empathize with the federal workers and were aghast at what the president was doing to them since the beginning of the shutdown the president's approval rating has hit an all time low he was increasingly accused of being out of touch with the ordinary people. but despite all criticism trump has not given up on the border wall just yet republican and democrat lawmakers will now negotiate in order to find a mutually agreeable solution for border security and trump already made clear should he not be satisfied with the outcome this shutdown could continue. for more on this i'm joined now by nick hogan from the german council on foreign

foreign policy thanks so much for joining us nicolle this is a clear defeat for trump wouldn't you say absolutely the democrats can claim for victory here then no negotiations about the war before the end the shutdown so i think it is a very big success for the democrats and especially for nancy pelosi now this is a temporary measure this is funding for only three weeks but what happens then i mean there's been a huge cost to the country during this the shutdown what happens after these three weeks where the negotiations would be even tougher because the atmosphere would change even more. even though people will get paid now a will. be compensated for the time. of the shutdown there are a lot of people who are dependent on this money which are not directly working for the government so all the services the people who provide. goods and
9:05 am
services to the government we're not to be paid so you have hardening off the atmosphere and the issues if the democrats are willing to include the budget for the wall we'd still be on the negotiation table so i expect another crisis on the horizontal because trump has to deliver to his electorate and he we're not back down even though his situation has now fundamentally changed he even looks wimpy to some office. supporters and this is something which will incite and mood debate and most possibly another crisis so as you say an even further hardening of of the atmosphere and of course his standing he does not like to lose what is. this going to do how will this affect affect trump's support
9:06 am
specifically amongst his base where he still has to deliver and the base still expects him to come up with an idea or up with a plan to build the wall and it's interesting because yesterday when he announced the temporary. end of the shutdown he didn't talk about the fact that she wanted mexico to pay for the war which is very interesting because this is something he promised to the people who voted for him and you know seeing him doing this might change some of the elements of what he promised his electorate to do and they have very closely observing what the president can and cannot so it's it is a very tricky situation and the government shutdown is extremely unpopular or identical rembert from the german council on foreign policy thank you so much for your time today. at least seven people have died after a dam collapsed at an iron ore mine in the brazilian state of menasha sure ice in

the country's southwest quiet firefighters have saved more than two hundred workers that around the same number still missing the dam had been holding back waste its collapse unleashed a torrent of mud destroyed homes and farmland and cut off land access to the area. the u.n. security council has called an emergency session today to discuss the crisis in venezuela the country's self declared interim president. has said he won't give up his fight for fresh elections he's announced large scale protests from next week and has called on the army to switch their allegiance and support him. the man who declared himself president came out of hiding on friday in the venezuelan capital caracas opposition leader one rejected an offer of talks with incumbent president nicolas maduro and urged supporters to protest until
9:08 am
transparent elections are held i think so are you accompanying those this saturday and sunday brothers to prepare for next week's large demonstration of course we're going back to the street. i don't know when i'm on i got here but maduro refuses to budge he's backed by the military who refuse quite his pleas to change sides and he put trey's gliders rise as a conspiracy against his government. calling anything they put together a coup attempt together with an international. media because there is a media coup against venezuela. to distort the real situation. and to put pressure on a country. and oppose washington's model of intervention. that washington madieu rose severed relations with the u.s.
9:09 am
after washington rushed to support his opponent while some u.s. staff have left the embassy for the airport the trumpet ministration says it will keep the embassy open and self-proclaimed interim leader one why dole is promising the people of venezuela a humanitarian aid supplied by the united states. ok for more on the story let's bring in peter he's the scientific director at the american institute in thanks so much for joining us today and why don't has reappeared and in caracas surrounded by his supporters has his support been steadily growing i think so but we will have more information about this next week but what we can say is that he has been able to we animate the opposition with his idea of the beatles are you have done so open assemblies to make people pros that protest once again ok now my dear it doesn't seem to still have the
9:10 am
military leadership behind him is there any indication at all that he's ready to back down that he would consider fresh elections it's not a surprise that he has a military leadership behind him the question will be next week how is the bigger the bigger part of the military acting when there are once again protests like this for the moment no sign that he will step the honorable step back no sign until a case of why don't he's calling for a major demonstration next week what do you think will happen how is this power struggle going to unfold well we have seen in internationalization all this conflict so that's also what we are going to see him the night it's in the united nations security council today all the different positions above as has been happening in then when as well. though has announced some kind of road to transitions so he says the use open has to step back then you have to create
9:11 am
a transitional government and then there must be free and fair election and of course human tell you in eight also for the people in the country so that's what he is proposing we have to see next week really people are joining the streets because that sees only power he is or other powerless u.s. policies are humans. powerful arguments but he has no real power up to now ok talking about washington washington has said that it will divert oil revenues to one by doe is that a credible threat how much damage would something like that do to the jury that's quite a difficult question because we all know that president trump and some of the people who are now are talking about democracy and when as well i'm not the best friends of democracy for what we know them also the new special in charge of foreign as well and though is known as a hawk for a lot of time so but it's a difficult situation and i think we have to accept all. possibilities
