began i spoke to correspondent oscar schlanger in the venezuelan capital caracas i asked him if the pressure coming from european countries was having an effect on the power struggle in venezuela. both have a lot of influence and they influence up to this point because it was the european union and many of the european countries that along with over sixty countries rejected the elections of the twentieth of may and last year that elected president when the new term began on january tenth he was no longer president because they did not. see those as fair elections so that immediately puts the president of the national assembly which is one way though as president interim of venezuela so they are actually playing a very big role in how this comes about but other foreign countries are supporting

the durham turkey china and especially russia how important is that well it's no surprise russia will support him. a few months ago moscow delivered to russian bombers to caracas when tensions ran high between motherwell and washington there is a lot of economic and political interest in venezuela for the russians but it seems like they have backed down a bit saying they are open to being mediators for dialogue between mother in law and the opposition suggesting they want not to back him up militarily however we also received information that russian military contractors were sent to aid my huna for his security in case any attempt to arrest either defense minister has commented on that report. and what signs do you see as close as you are to this unfolding story that. goto is winning or losing this contest. well it's been very impressive how his support has grown over the past few weeks

this is a congressman that we knew very little about he wasn't in the media all that much and came president of the national assembly because it was this party strove for that presidency and his fellow leader congressman who was up for the position is sheltered and she was embassy of waiting the government's persecution even the party's founder label or not this is an house arrest so you can imagine the risk of holding that position however when i go has done an impressive job of talking to the masses and masses even calmly and constantly holding these open air assemblies that have gathered huge crowds that we've seen some of the largest in the past twenty years so for many people here it's a fresh face in politics that people wanted to see and that has managed to unite the opposition a task many thought wasn't possible towards the end of last year. oscar shanker in caracas thank you to brazil now where around three hundred people are missing after

lawmakers president donald trump has passed a short term funding bill to temporarily reopen the government but his funding request for a five point seven billion dollar border wall with mexico the issue that started the deadlock is not part of the deal and trump still wants a wall. this was the announcement federal employees across the country have been waiting for and not just them thank you very much my fellow americans i am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government. agreed to temporarily reopen the government until mid february even without having received the funding for his key request a will on the border to mexico. his retreat came after intensifying delays at some of the nation's biggest airports and another missed pay day for hundreds of

i spoke to our correspondent in washington earlier and i asked her why trump was backing down no but it was an interesting confluence of events one of which was the chaos in specifically the northeast of the country that occurred during the day on friday early in the morning several major airports had to basically shut down for a little while because of staffing issues due to due to the shutdown there were people who simply weren't showing up to work and the airports couldn't function and that was one factor and the other factor was just the blame being placed upon the republicans and specifically trump for all these very negative effects that we solve rippling throughout the country because it wasn't just the government workers who were going without paychecks it was the small businesses in their towns are suddenly weren't getting any money because people can buy things and the poll numbers for the president were just. in an avalanche downward it was really clear that people were not supportive of what was going on so after. both sides of

congress sort of smacked each other's versions of opening the government down they were able to meet behind the scenes and then present basically what was exactly the same plan that we saw on the table in december before all of this started. they called trump as you know the twitter president at times i want to bring in a tweet from a conservative commentator ann coulter who tweeted good news for george herbert walker bush as of today he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as president of the united states isn't that a big ouch for trump and his party faithful well it is interesting to see the cracks that are now suddenly starting to appear in the republican party trump's base is still very much a fan of the president but ann coulter was one of the biggest cheerleaders of the president from early early on in the campaign season back in two thousand and

fifteen two thousand and sixteen and it was actually another one of her tweets that was sort of the impetus her and several other similar conservative commentators it was the impetus for the president to not sign the package that was put in front of him back in december because it did not include this five point seven billion dollars for border wall with mexico and that missing key piece was something that the president has said he now needs and is possibly going to shut the government down again in three weeks because of this but we are basically back to exactly the same place where we were it began december something started again because of one of and coulter's tweets ok my waiter in washington thanks so much for that. time for tennis now and japan's now me osaka has won the australian open osaka beat
