this is news coming to you live from berlin and venezuela's self declared interim president is winning over the international community but can he get the country's powerful military to switch allegiance and renounce their loyalty to nicolas maduro also on the program chinese court sentences a prominent rights lawyer to four and a half years of course a person of state power human rights groups are calling him a gross mistrusts and another democrat jumps into america's twenty twenty
9:01 am
presidential election many see california senator a couple of harris as one of the heavyweights in what promises to be a crowded field of candidates. and defending go to sleep champions by munich stay hot on the heels of league leaders dortmund after a rocky start to the season by and showed they're back in form again stood guard and near certain to make it a tight race for the title. hello and welcome i'm terry march and thanks for joining us the national indorsement of venice where the self declared interim president is growing israel and australia are among the latest countries to recognize one. that's after his rival president nicolas maduro rejected a european ultimatum for fresh elections to be held within eight days both men are
9:02 am
now engaged in a fierce contest for the backing of venezuela's military to shore up their claims of legitimacy. target practice under the eyes of president nicolas maduro it took place a fourth. twenty seventeen a group of soldiers rose up against the government this time it was about showing loyalty. are you plotting a coup. or are you constitutionalists. traitors never always loyal. to their. murderous sees the hand of western governments behind opposition protests he says they're trying to overthrow him he knows the military is key to staying in power the opposition leader wanted why though is trying to convince the military to join his side following a church service for victims of violent street clashes he made
9:03 am
a direct appeal. from his will and soldiers i'm talking to you this is the moment to be on the constitution side. don't be afraid no doubt about it all. supporters are spreading out across the country going to army barracks to spread the word. has proposed an amnesty i thought it would be good to convince venezuelan soldiers to join the opposition. none of the soldiers wants to be seen switching sides on camera one says that the military is still firmly on the side of manure and i want his supporters hope that this will change in the coming days. you know but we're not out of the way gets let's get more now from jennifer communicate on sabah she's a venezuelan journalist with d.w. in jennifer how important is the military's role in resolving this crisis.
9:04 am
well there are critical i mean this is the institution in mina's where that the sides honestly because they have the weapons who is in power and who's not at a critical moment like this of course the top leadership has sided with my rule but the thing is it is about the lower ranks in the lower ranks break from the military than the military weekends and then they have to sort of in a divided situation they could mean the difference between mother or being strong and mother of being weak and so right now as the top brass is backing him the opposition is clearly going for those people in the barracks of people at the lower ranks to try to make the difference right there now talking about the opposition the self declared president why though who is not or as a rival at this point is calling for public protests this week on wednesday and saturday numerous people were killed in previous protests what can we expect this
9:05 am
time. well you should expect a showing because the opposition and its supporters are fired up right now this this declaration this proclamation of his interim presidency has really reached new life into the opposition now of course there's a fear and maybe bo fear of reprisals of violence but they know that the world is watching so i think that we should expect people to come out but this is also going to be the test how many people actually come out can the opposition bring another showing quite like the one in the last week on the twenty third of january it remains to be seen but i would say that they will come out well several european governments including germany have said they will recognize wideout as president if more duro doesn't call fresh elections by sunday any chance of a doro doing that. it's not likely and neither are knows that if he were to have an election it would also be heavily monitored because they haven't just asked for an election they've asked for a credible election and this is exactly the problem the last election that he held
9:06 am
he can hold elections it's just that the last election was was basically being the sham it was it was not credible and so he would not want to invite all of that in and all of that international attention not to mention that if a credible election weren't to take place it is not likely that he would win he doesn't seem to have a whole lot of occupation that he used to so it would be it would be shocking to me if he did and if he did do that it's not likely that the election would actually be credible now for people who are just coming in on this crisis has been dealing with it for a while remind us again what led to right why did it would declaring himself interim president. so glad no one has declared himself in turn president based on the constitution the venezuelan constitution allows for this because if a president is in the case of what they say which is illegitimate or a great president is not present then it falls on the national assembly president
9:07 am
to be the interim president until elections can be called now what led to this well basically twenty seventeen is the key here that is when they were decided to strip the national assembly off of its power and create an alternate legislature and so because the national assembly is controlled by the opposition it basically stripped the opposition from any power so of course this was a move that he won but now this is the next step jennifer thank you so much jennifer a communal gonzalez there talking to us from bomb. now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today rescuers in southeastern brazil are searching for more than three hundred people missing in an area buried under mud from a collapsed mining down fifty eight people are confirmed dead it's not clear why the dam containing mining waste collapsed in september inspectors found that them to be safe. hundreds of spanish taxi drivers blocked one of madrid's main roads
9:08 am
over the weekend as part of their open ended strike against bride hailing services such as goober the spanish government has already agreed to clamp down on her but taxi drivers and demanding further restrictions on the services which they say unfairly undercut their business. and in australia hundreds of thousands of fish died overnight on a stretch of a major river in new south wales state it's the third mass fish kill in the area in recent weeks local officials blame the deaths on drought but critics say water mismanagement is partly to blame. a court in china has sentenced the prominent rights lawyer wong jiang to four and a half years in jail for subversion of state power one defendant political activists and members of the fallen gong spiritual movement rights groups have denounced the sentence wang was detained in august twenty fifteen as part of
9:09 am
a wider crackdown on lawyers for more on the case i'm joined now by d.w. is about to spurling in beijing mathias first of all tell us more about why young and the crime that the court says he committed. well one turns on is what people here call a human rights lawyer he took up cases against the state against the government against the communist party defended citizens against state abhi tree. actions etc and this led to. the accusation of undermining state power subverting state's power which is quite a severe accusation which amounts to something it is an ex an accusation actually that he had been influenced by foreign forces and try to undermine state power it's a very severe accusation that's why the sentence is so high now one was detained as
9:10 am
part of a crackdown a understand on lawyers in twenty fifteen in china what is china trying to achieve with these arrests. their crackdown on lawyers at the time about two hundred lawyers would change some for shorter why some for a longer while. john is now the last one of these in jail it's part of a crackdown on civil society across china the chinese communist party is strengthening its grip on society on the state on the economy and these lawyers were obviously in its way by reminding the communist party to govern according to its own laws and it is aside from the crackdown on rights lawyers china is also putting pressure on a number of other groups including ethnic weaker is and muslims they've been i mean widespread reports about detention camps for wiggers in the north west you've been looking into those reports i know and efforts to repress muslim culture in general
9:11 am
we've got your report let's check that out and talk again in a minute. it's not unusual for iran to get offended when he logs into china's social networks the writer is keenly aware of the growing islamophobia wave spreading through the country including a so-called anti helen movement who supporters accuse muslims of dividing the country they're calling on airlines and universities to stop serving her lao food dishes prepared according to muslim law china's internet censors have nothing against these kinds of messages. you hear for sure the goal of this movement is to clamp down on muslims. cortical sure what i meant to limit their rights as part of a minority. shuffle inflatable show. none of the members of the entitled movement we contacted were willing to speak on camera but
9:12 am
one because i'm served the association of pork eaters agreed to answer a few questions in an online chat he said islam in china is on the rise and that chinese majority culture is under threat but he wouldn't provide examples to back as clear. muslims make up less than two percent of china's population and iran whose real name is so we haue seen belongs to the queer minority a mandarin speaking group of muslims was mosques often built in typical chinese style for centuries and iran is birthplace jeana in eastern china has been the home of a substantial muslim community. the government strict rules controlling religious practice are apparent in the mosques courtship the head of this congregation says he supports state policy jewish
9:13 am
outerwear so religion should serve society first and foremost a lot it should be managed in harmony with our social system so that's the right way and that's what's going on. even though daily life in jena is muslim quarter looks like business as usual state back pressure on chinese muslims is mounting a new five year plan calls for stiffer control over mosques in a few provinces some of them have been closed and restaurants were forced to remove any signs in arad extract. the government points to the police state in the western region of seems young as a perfect example of religious control but in reality that's where hundreds of thousands of ethnic muslim we go are being detained in reeducation camps according to human rights i. our camera team was stopped by guards when we approached one of them and we were headed for allegations. that would you like to
9:14 am
see that on live on the ranch we come on. and ron is one of few chinese intellectuals who have openly criticized the state specific usually of the week it was this has led to police questioning him for two days he says he is afraid but refuses to remain silent. when you turn once you speak the truth and the communist party takes offense at you with them they will certainly take their revenge at some point you shutting up will not protect your. young man. and ron fears the worst for chinese muslims may be yet to come. how are chinese muslims dealing with these growing restrictions and the threats you imagine. i think we need to see two cases separately once there is the massive repression the totally tarion
9:15 am
oppression of week is and other turkic muslim communities in scenes young in the western region there are a deep mistrust of the communist party against minority people who are very much distinct from the one people comes together with an oppression of religion over there going into a mosque into a state run mosque can already get you in to do these detention camps there is a massive pressure there's almost it's almost impossible to practice religion there on the other hand we have the holy muslims the chinese the more assimilated muslims who have child mandarin chinese as their mother tongue and they are starting to feel a lot more pressure now religion is suspicious to the communist party with this at least ideology and the communist party is now trying to enhance.
9:16 am
control over these mosques and it and to to suppress also muslim identity of these people. a lot of there's some voices or forums and on the internet have been shut down accounts have been shut down there is a fear that some of the repression we've seen in scenes young might spread over to these communities some provincial governments of province provinces where there are a lot of who we have been traveling to since young signing corporation agreements and that is of course a very weary some development but here's thank you so much for filling us in there did obviously tears welling up in beijing. now moving on to the united states democratic senator connelly harris has formally launched her bid for the presidency she's one of the party's front runners and she's hoping her background as a prosecutor will help her win the right to challenge donald trump and twenty twenty kicking off her campaign in oakland california harris presented herself as
9:17 am
a leader who could unite america. long lines in downtown oakland kaamelott harris drew a big crowd here for her companion kick of rally among them many young women like in portugal eager to hear what the senator has to say. we really love how strong she is unlike criminal justice reform immigration she just doesn't allow people to believe her like she asked the hard questions she keeps her composure he's really will spoken i am excited to see her or her pop for. the about what matters and ultimately be reinvigorated by her this really was supposed to be a show of political force and it certainly looked that way when kaamelott harris to put a stage the daughter of jamaican and indian immigrants promised to be a fighter for the people stating that it was time to restore what she views as

in south america but how successful has the pontiff been in getting young people into the church given all the scandals that it's faced there is absolutely no doubt that we have through countries in latin america africa even europe really reenergized church and particularly at the bases so i think that this is a spin very effective i mean this we're you know in this sort of periodic mold us the woodstock of catholicism to put it in some ways and it really does attract lot of people and people come from every continent however obviously this does not address the fundamental questions about policy and about the things that actually are being demanded by the international community from the church so we have two different stories the church has regained a bit of its footing in the sort of general population the bigger questions about the institutional doings have not been addressed now the pope has been speaking out about the crisis in venezuela he says he's praying for an outcome that respects
9:22 am
human rights is he going beyond that is he saying anything else no one and i do not expect him to to be quite honest i mean the issue that is very visceral in venezuela for anybody who has a bit of memory about left american history is that the country that's not simply have a political problem the country sexually extremely polarized and you have actually a base for the chavez side that will still be there even if there is a change of government given the fact the difficult position that. church in general has tried over the last couple of years to establish a political harmony or at least political dialogue in these different countries i think that the vatican has a very clear idea that even beyond the mother of government there will still be a need for conversations and i think that that's the way that they are babying successfully or not we cannot really tell right now martin thank you so much religious affairs correspondent martin guy you're welcome to test down the world number one novak djokovic is celebrating his record seventh australian open title
