or real kind which kind of christmas tree are americans going for this he said. welcome to do business i want to get jones good to have you with us u.s. treasury secretary stephen roach and has phoned the heads of the country's six largest banks over the weekend to discuss steps to calm ocket after a week of dramatic losses on wall street nugent called the chief executives of goldman sachs bank of america j.p. morgan chase morgan stanley citigroup and wells fargo who according to a statement confirmed that they have ample liquidity available for a lot of lending the calls came as u.s. stock markets experienced their worst week since the two thousand and eight financial crisis uncertainty over the partial government shutdown has added to concerns key indices tough wiped out all their gains for the here. and for more on what's driving the markets in these last few days of the year i'm
3:46 pm
joined by chip on the chin ballou my colleague of course will phone call do you think come markets well i mean if the reaction is anything to go by so far it's not doing any of that likely or reassurance that isn't quite the reassurance now investors actually thinking about whether they have to be concerned about the liquidity that he had to discuss with those six banks yolles in the u.s. that he spoke with yesterday and of course today he'll be having a meeting with the leading market participants in the u.s. regarding the current market volatility among other things and saw investors are wondering if there's more to be concerned about not really reassured of those points so everybody is i actually kind of wondering they want to be probably listening in on those phone calls and that's the issue right now you know i mean those phone calls is quite an unusual move in are not is necessarily instilling confidence there and that's certainly when you have that back backdrop of that government shutdown which i mean we see it every year but this year. somehow
3:47 pm
different i mean the last more than twenty thirteen and that was the one during the obama administration that one white point to two percent of the g.d.p. that year so in terms of this one is very probably bad for the market because it comes at a time when the market is already volatile that wasn't the case in twenty thirteen and investors have enough to be concerned about and now they actually have this one thing to also worry about and i think that's the issue at this point is the timing is terrible at the at a time when december is actually a great month when that's there's normally but this is sort of like the words december in years except for of course the financial crisis in two thousand and of course december isn't over just yet we've got the christmas season now we're coming up to new year do you think this could be resolved before the end of it you well i mean it's going to be a vote on the twenty seventh of december that's when a decision could be made and it doesn't look very likely because of course there's sort of an issue with that wall border wall with mexico and trump is not very willing to compromise on that and that makes it can supposedly pay for it anyway no
3:48 pm
i mean he wants now his own government to pay for it and nobody is going to really probably come to an agreement on that one at least not until the end of the year. to punish him thanks so much for joining me in the studio. pan-european exchange operate to you right next is in talks to acquire also boris the no reachin stock exchange for six hundred twenty five million euros the company is currently seeking the support of the board of directors its already secured support for its offer from also boys shareholders representing almost half of the outstanding shares here an x. which operates voices in paris amsterdam brussels london this been an dublin city found also bars position in seafood derivatives and oil services and shipping attractive. is. on the government's reelection campaign is that it is complaining different this time. yeah the ruling government lost three key state elections late last year which left them on
3:49 pm
a bit of shaky ground and has them concerned about reelection prospects in the upcoming general election so they are hoping to put forward something using the budget as a way of appealing to the wider public particularly those sections like farmers or the poor who are unhappy with them just to did the principal opposition party the congress announced a minimum income guarantee for poor people which will certainly force the government to have to respond as well so if they're able to put forward enough for farmers and the rural poor they might have a much better chance of coming back to power but much depends on whether there's enough fiscal space to spend their way out of the worries thank you very much ron venkataraman from delhi thank you we're going to the united states now where president on the trump has lifted sanctions on a number of russian companies leads to all agog to reprosecute the firms in

question include the j j a c power company and giant roussel. is an ally of russian president vladimir putin and is currently being investigated as part of robert miller's probe into alleged collusion between moscow and the drums twenty sixteen presidential campaign the us treasury department said the decision to renew sanctions was made because they're impossible no longer controls the company critics including some republican lawmakers dispute that claim. zoom in on this with our correspondent at the exchange part is the world's biggest element in produce outside china what effect did trans decision have on global commodities today. or hard one second the world's second largest player is absent that does get noted and back in april when the sanctions were
3:51 pm
first announced it actually drove. a limit on prices up to a seven year high the reaction today wasn't as big that's because throughout these negotiations the actual sanctions have been pushed back and pushed back with with improvements so the prices have recovered today though at the opening price dropped as much as one point four percent at the long london metal exchange and that's of course because a lot of material can now be used that couldn't be used before about three hundred thousand tons is the estimate of. aluminum that can now go into the london metal exchange stockpile us about a fourth of the overall stockpile size. let's look into this week the u.s. and china will be talking trade again from wednesday on would suspect a breakthrough that. the hopes for a breakthrough breakthrough are very minimal in fact the association of investment
3:52 pm
companies has done a little survey of. investment fund managers in asia and there's not a lot of positing positive things i read because while it would make sense economically to get together and stop this trade conflict it is so much bigger on the political scale it's about intellectual property theft it's about the power display from china that seems to threaten the u.s. with the belgian road initiative for example it's also about cyber crimes of this very little positive the only positive note i did see was it might benefit some other asian countries for production might shift from china to other countries around. the fronts and so strange for us thank you. we're staying in the u.s. hundreds of thousands of workers should be back on the job this week after the end of a thirty five day government shutdown them out of work and unpaid fortunately those
3:53 pm
workers will receive back pay economists say there's no making up for the lost spending of the past month and the price tag is quite steep about look. it might have been traffic chaos at the airports that brought an end to the u.s. government shutdown after more than a month with air traffic controllers calling in sick flights were delayed or canceled at new york's la guardia and other national hubs then washington came through with a deal an agreement between president trump and democrats in congress with no money paid for a border wall and sure things will go back to normal federal offices will reopen as well national parks workers will get paid and their relief to. the shutdown was really traumatic for a lot of people and i think it put a lot of american workers in a really challenging financial situation and i think back in the future i hope that shutdowns like this are avoided the family will be able to pay our bills they will
3:54 pm
be able to hear anything you know the off the street and out begging for through but the economic damage is done the shutdown came over the white house's demand for five point seven billion dollars for a border wall now analysts to standard and poor's say the shutdown cost six billion dollars mostly due to lost productivity and weakened economic activity the council of economic advisers within the white house takes the cost even higher estimating a weekly loss of point one three percentage points of quarterly gross domestic product according to their numbers the month long dispute could cost the economy about twenty six billion dollars. and it could all get even more expensive the current agreement will last for three weeks it is unclear what happens then. taxi drivers in spain blocked one of madrid's major thoroughfares over the weekend
3:55 pm
to vent their anger override. the drivers are demanding further restrictions on the service which they say unfairly on the business the spanish government already agreed to clamp down on including capping licenses for new drivers but the taxi drivers say the new regulations don't go far enough. and before i let you go we'd like to leave you with a special request and bring us closer to you and your stories closer to us what does that mean i reporter explain. hi i'm here the law from d.w. business for the past year i've been traveling across europe to find out how the economy affects everything people's everyday lives.
