that's here in berlin. is beijing trying to send some sort of signal with this prison sentence right i mean i think there are two different messages that are being sent and the first one is if you work on certain issues and you defend certain kinds of people will come after you but perhaps more important the one issue that's been the case with a lot of the lawyers that beijing has gone after is they were able to actually galvanized forces across different social strata and so now other another message that's being sent here as if you're the kind of person who will inspire across social. movements we will also not tolerate because if there's one thing the party doesn't like is society organizes outside of the official framework you mentioned some of the issues that that was when john was working on in china civil rights religious tolerance how are those issues playing out right now in china what's the

rights cases are desperately needed. and i do think there is only speaking there is quite a bit of unrest right now especially as china's economy is doing badly at the moment so that really exacerbates tension this is a four and a half year prison sentence in your opinion what are the chances could he possibly be released early will he be in jail for the next four years i would assume that the time served i think he's already been in jail for three years or so so that the time served would be weighed against that sentence but we'll have to wait and see if that's the case marca oberg or china analyst thank you very much. thought to some of the other stories making news around the world american and taliban officials have reportedly agreed on a framework for an afghanistan peace deal the u.s. envoy says the taliban have committed to preventing the country from being used as a base for terror groups america is considering withdrawing all of its troops in

a bloodbath. meanwhile has called for fresh protests against president nicolas maduro the venezuelan opposition also wants new elections several european countries have warned that they will switch their support to mr glide though if no vote is called i don't has also been able to persuade army generals or is trying to do so to abandon their support for president maduro by offering amnesty. in a carefully staged show of solidarity even as well as president nicolas maduro joined soldiers for morning drills he also took part in military maneuvers intended to display government strength and its preparedness. letter you're going for tomorrow i'm calling on all members of our armed forces to show maximum unity and discipline to be ready to repel the imperialists coup attempt. regular citizens delivered military personnel an offer of amnesty from opposition leader and self

declared president one. at numerous barricades the letter was immediately burned or torn up meanwhile why don't we tend to the church service to remember the dozens of people who have lost their lives in recent days he says he's ready to negotiate but only if certain conditions are met. and so this illegitimate government a transitional government and the promise of reelections that's simply what the people of venezuela demanding. later why don't call for fresh protests both at home and abroad to take place later this week. with this we want to support the european union's initiative and their ultimatum. but that's an ultimatum that president murder has already categorically rejected. earlier we spoke to correspondent oscar schlink in caracas and we asked him to explain why president nicolas maduro enjoyed such strong support in venezuela's
8:11 pm
military and why past attempts at dialogue with the opposition had failed to produce any results but was a strong support in the military because high ranking officers have a huge economic and political interest in misrata and they also share the responsibility of human rights violations and torture there are being investigated for example in the hague and other international ports your position as so they are open to negotiations but they are not want to sit through any more all starts with models government since members of the office in two thousand and thirteen people are going to swell and have seeing there have been at least three of them about the routes between opposition and government and there is only almost there is because most government fails to deliver their end of the bargain the main one being elections with a new electoral council that has been accused of being rather fraudulent not only here but as well but also international so in the past that resulted in by immigrants and people are tired of that you want to go to elections with
8:12 pm
a new electoral council and that is something one would not have said has to happen in the coming in this. now those and i'm a dural protests are driven in large part by venezuela's dire economic situation food and medicine are in short supply electricity is unreliable and hyper inflation is raging venezuela is an oil exporting nation and was once one of the wealthiest countries in south america so how did things get so bad our next report plots out the country's swift economic to. boil venezuela's greatest natural resource but also its greatest curse oil kit majoris predecessor google child is afloat for a decade before the price fell dramatically in twenty zero eight after a child was death and twenty thirteen nicolas maduro became president he continued the chavez government's economic policies but oil prices fell dramatically again in

twenty fourteen for years the low price of oil has put a strain on the venezuelan economy to help it recover macdraw introduced the petro in february twenty eighth in a crypto currency pegged to the price of oil but in september twenty eighth in the petrol tank two in august twenty eighth the majority announced a three thousand percent hike in the minimum wage to quell unrest over inflation and shortages but by december of last year inflation hit a whopping one point seven million percent the bloomberg news agency came up with the coffee index the price of a cup of coffee reached two million both of ours in june of twenty eighteen at the time around fifty u.s. cents but doura revalue the national currency the believe are slashing five zeroes that brought the cost of a cup of coffee down to twenty both of ours but by the start of twenty nineteen the price again soared to one point four million of the new bowl of ours that's equal

to one hundred forty million old both of ours people run to buy groceries as soon as they get paid before their salary loses its value and that's if they can even find. that is whalen's are tired of shortages and inflation more than three million of them have left the country in recent years clean mainly to colombia but the anger is growing among those who have stayed. there watching d.w. news still to come the german football champions by munich are not giving up their title without a fight we'll show you all the goals as they demolished stuttgart over the weekend . of denmark started building a fence today along its border with germany copenhagen hopes the seventy kilometer metal construction will halt the spread of african swine fever which is transmitted by wild boars it's attracted lots of controversy for environmental and political reasons as well. to abuse pablo foley has been doing some
8:15 pm
muckraking on this story and joins me now in the studio first of all why is denmark so concerned about african swine fever well first and foremost it exports around four billion euros worth of pork products every year on almost half of those are exported to countries outside the european union so if this disease were to enter denmark those exports would be immediately affected because they would be able to export any of that european union and it's as you said seventy kilometers long denmark is also the country with the it has more pigs than people so it's a. pretty big industry there too you were talking as well about the fact that it's a one and a half meter high fence it goes as well then fifty centimeters deep it's expected to be built by the end of this year and it's costing the taxpayer four million euro they're now they're also introducing it's not just this will because it's sort of a kind of a bigger topic and they're going to be looking at. the vehicles which are bringing
8:16 pm
in animals to denmark and they have kind of got pretty strict rules about those and there's also a pretty hefty fines. for cars or vehicles of any sort that haven't been properly cleaned or disinfect so it's really more than just a fence here but talking about this fence i mean how effective will this be can really stop the spread of this disease and what are environmental groups saying about this one of our mental groups of obviously been very much against this in fact a w w f warn that the barrier will disturb other animals including wolves and otters and they've also said that wild boars are perfectly capable of crossing the border because there actually are holes will say in this border. you know there are waterways where obviously there's no wall or fence vailable and also at wild boars interesting we are very very good swimmers so we can actually see in these images here. there's a group of wild boars swimming across to do that in these holes that exist in
8:17 pm
denmark and they've also environmentalists appealed to the european union and in fact the european food safety authority concluded that there's actually no evidence that these large fences have been effective for can't containing this disease from passing from country to country and then across the border interesting don which is the german state which borders on to denmark the environment and agriculture minister there said that he doubts about the sense and assess of the of the fence so it seems to be you know not being well received both politically and by environmental groups let's get political quickly there's been some questions about other motives for this fence does does this mean denmark is closing its border for example to a certain degree this is what critics have been saying in fact one of the there's a far right group in denmark called the danish people's party and they said that we should add a couple of metres of the fence not just keeps german wild boar away but also illegal immigrants asylum seekers and adventurers so you know there's definitely
8:18 pm
sort of some voices within denmark who would like to see a stronger or a tighter border between their southern neighbor of germany and there's also talk that perhaps this is an attempt by the danish government to appeal to will say more right wing voters within their country ok a lot to it there. thank you very much. in the united states democratic senator camila harris has formally launched her bid for the presidency she's considered one of the front runners to win the democratic nomination and therefore challenge donald trump in two thousand and twenty the former prosecutor began her campaign in her hometown of oakland california presenting herself as a leader who could unite the country. long lines in downtown oakland come along her is drew a big crowd here for her companion kick of rally among them many young women like in portugal eager to hear what the senator has to say. we really love how
8:19 pm
strong she is unlike criminal justice reform immigration she. just doesn't allow people to believe her like she asked the hard questions she keeps her composure he's really will spoken i am excited to see her or her pop for. be about what matters and ultimately be reinvigorated fire this really was supposed to be a show of political force and it certainly looked that way when kaamelott harris took to the stage the daughter of jamaican and indian immigrants promised to be a fighter for the people stating that it was time to restore what she views as a loss of american values president we are here because the american dream and our american democracy are under attack and on the line like never before and we are here at this moment in time because we must answer. a fundamental
8:20 pm
question. who are we. who are we as americans let's answer that question. america we are better than i the democratic party is looking for fresh faces and come along harris who's been a u.s. senator for only two years certainly fits that bill she grew up here in oakland a diverse industrial city known for its toughness high crime rates and political left wing activists now she is the first female black candidate having a buyable shot at the presidency. dozens of democrats lining up to run in twenty twenty the crucial question will be whether the party things come along harris has a chance of beating down old trump supporters definitely think she does understand
8:21 pm
people she understand them either understand the needs of our country and she has morals which we don't have right now. with a year and a half until the democrats pick their presidential nominee kaamelott her is still has a long way to go but her oakland rally was beyond doubt a good start to. football now and dortmund there in the driver's seat after the bonus leader's nineteenth round of matches over moody if indeed of his forces here. there's a there's still some way to go in the season right but as far as it looks now is this basically it's two or three horse race yeah it's looking at why when you know the usual suspects out there the top dog in the boy. currently with a six point lead six point cushion of the top of the table there from by the bye you know that they're not going to give it up that easily they're not going to give dominant easy ride they've now gone to seven wins in a row in the bundesliga with a win over stuttgart this weekend that absolutely hammered them for want to score
8:22 pm
there you know by the. they so used to winning they've got that mentality and you've got to think that they're going to keep pushing on this. because coming form in the right at the right time as well to give them a kind of boost at the start of the recorder kind of after the winter break he's been pushed for playing a more attacking role he's scoring goals and that's exactly what by and made so it's got all the all the signs of a brilliant run and it could be fun but byron of course they're not used to being in second place maybe an unfamiliar role how do you rate their chances of them climbing to number one yeah absolutely i mean by and of won the league the last six years in a row but pretty much every season they have been ahead of the game by this stage they've been top of the table already and it's been the other teams chasing them so it's going to depend on how they kind of psychologically deal with this different kind of challenge you know i think a lot will depend on that psychology but also on keeping players fit on you know the champions league as well they've got that coming up that's going to be
8:23 pm
a different kind of challenge for them physically as well so the big from that they have is that dortmund just don't look like they're dropping points they've only lost one game all season it mild come down to the match between the two sides in april could be what decides the title race not just byron of course there was another game on sunday to talk about that's right we had lights against us off on sunday as well i thought just sort of had a good chance in this when they won their four games going into this but as it was they didn't turn up at all and it was light secure to the points and we can take a look at the highlights from that game right now. dusseldorf open the match by honoring world cup winning former keeper tony turk who would have turned one hundred but the players attention was focused squarely on route from nick's visiting leipzig were in the hunt for a champions league place a poorly cleared corner in the second minute so used to breakthrough that disoriented dusseldorf. vital one new lead in. i jumped up beyond. calmly striding forward in matching his birthday ever been. it's

a good goal just seven minutes later person was again at the center of things starting from a pass from comradely the pope dremiel in a little over a quarter of an hour marcel sub it's a rip job in a quiet second half forcing a solid sea of lima poundstone rounding out the scoring for low to get for neil in the sixty eighth minute. person in lights so you could soak up a critical way of grouping them one step closer to a top four finish. leipzig in fourth place can they make it to the champions league you know in spite of that brilliant performance that we just saw from them they're not actually my favorites to make it to that fourth spot and get champions league qualification and they just haven't been consistent enough in attack bases and i think a lot comes down to the coach the coaching situation is very strange this year they've got rough running in the only for the one season as coach so if you're a play you know even if you play well the next coach might come in and throw you on
8:25 pm
the scrapheap might not want a player like you in that position so i think it's a it's a weird kind of challenge for the players at leipzig and it seems to be affecting them to their squad fewer goals than all of the other teams in the top six i think frankly who have a very good attacking lineup this season i think they have a great chance of leapfrogging leipzig they're currently in fifth place so they only need to go one place and then they're in the champions league spots so i think is going to be a real struggle for life to keep hold of that spot they've got a moment an exciting year in the buddha's league i like it are all removed from the boards like love for. in tennis world number one novak djokovic is celebrating a record seventh australian open title by saying he's in the hunt for many more grand slam titles djokovic and will be world number two rafael nadal with ease in a straight set finals win on sunday the serb claimed his fifteenth overall grand slam victory that puts djokovic two behind a doll for career titles and five behind roger federer who leads the all time men's
