chilling and multiple. well look let's look into this a bit further i'm not joining the studio mohamed transparencies regional advisor for south asia thank you for joining us on business is a. transparency has been doing this list for a long time now we've been reporting on it every year for a while has anything actually improved in south asia what we're looking at in stagnation and this is this is disappointing toss to a certain extent but also what this also means is that there is a lot of space for improvement for a lot of space for the governments of south asia to work towards making things better but how. many things have been corruption is not an innate inevitable reality of life you look at if you look at communities that are quite clean states that are quite clean. what the number one thing that you'll find in common in most of this is that the top ranking countries would be that they have integrity
3:54 pm
infrastructure in place hence the link that we are making to democracy what is integrity it was done how very strong independent and to corruption agencies free press vibrant civil society calling for him to corruption clean and independent judiciary that doesn't look into who's coming to the court to win they are prosecuting. many factors like that closely linked to democracy. we've been reporting on this for a while you've been working on these reports for a while isn't it time we accept playing the devil's advocate here isn't it time with the we accept that corruption is a part of human life or it will always will be not at all you know i think this is this is a this is a pessimistic view of how we're looking at things at the end of the day we cannot
3:55 pm
afford not to fight corruption because of the cost of corruption is just too high if you are looking at it's not something that you can you can ignore because the cost comes in terms of health care. of indication lack of infrastructure these things you know inevitably come back in other forms of social ills so it's not something that we can afford to do tom but you know it will gruffness before by laws laws have to be made by governments and enforced by civil servants if these people are corrupt how can you ever fight it. if you look at the general trends in in the countries that that we are in pessimistic about what you will find is that the majority of the population are young people and young people in general are becoming less and less tolerant of corruption new things in every trouble in change into election results and politicians are finding it harder and harder to know so at the end of the day it might take time but this change is coming change is coming
