so we just saw there in our last shot of the bundestag on covering this this event we have with us in the studio here peter craven peter has been listening all along with me through these events there at the holocaust remembrance ceremony taking place in the german bundestag what stood out for you peter i thought initially what was very interesting in seoul friedland this address was i mean it was obviously incredibly moving and incredibly immediate because it's his own personal testimony but he began by doing it the job of a historian he teaches u.c.l.a. in california he. has an international reputation as being one of the the great historians of the holocaust and he did his job of showing that very early hitler said that the holocaust would happen that the german people were involved in it that it was not the it was not germany it was german individual german people and the numbers rose from tens of thousands of people being killed initially to
10:06 am
hundreds of thousands then to the they absolute horror of millions being killed in in auschwitz birkenau but then he went on to give his personal testament i thought it was as is always the case in these instances so incredibly moving when he talks about the last moment when he was split up from his parents in vishy friends they were taken away they were arrested they were taken to paris and they were deported to auschwitz birkenau with many other young old jews from paris and other parts of france and once again the question from so three glenda what were those people in those trains in those courage is who knew where they were going to be taken away to and what was probably going to happen what were they saying to each other and these are the big questions that the really move somewhere so very very grateful for the personal testimony of somebody who is eighty six years old and is still there willing to talk to us willing to talk to jim is a nation an extraordinary address very moving he thought he did also a great job of combining the historical facts of the. eckerd together with these
10:07 am
personal anecdotes says his speciality is a historian this is what he's so well known for for the analysis but the emotion of history is we're getting very close to the people involved the victims and the perpetrators indeed now this service in the book to start today comes at a time of growing concern about rising anti semitism in europe saul freelander also raised that we have a sound bite from. who delivered the opening address the president of the bundestag let's listen in to what he had. it's a shame it is a source of great shame to us that jews are once again thinking about emigrating from germany because they do not feel safe in our country because they are exposed to hostility even physical attacks because jewish children in schools are bullied and ganged up on but it is not enough to experience a sense of shame. in addition to exerting the full power of the law allow
10:08 am
resistance in everyday life is especially needed and against anti semitism racism and discrimination of all kinds. of guns they present the bundestag saying that he's very concerned about the fact that jews in germany are again thinking about immigrating because of anti semitism is this something that german parliamentarian's are thinking about and talking about it or very very much i mean people are very concerned it was as if there was a survey recently that seem to indicate that among young germans forty percent indicated that they have they knew hardly nothing about the holocaust so although so friedland said that in a time of rising anti semitism globally european injured and in germany. he still said that he had positive things to say he said today's germany is a is a developing country is a is a changed country but nevertheless as a very liberal germany i think to reduce it to two quantities does there's
10:09 am
a there's a liberal open germany and there's a much less liberal and illiberal germany view so well that we now have the far right populist party the alternative for germany in the german parliament in all of the german regional parliaments and just one quote for we would see we could see xander goal and one of the leaders looking on as the addresses were being given today and one really wonders what what was going through his head we saw him actually applauding it's one stage but i i really want to what he was thinking this is the man after all who said that twelve years of nazi rule in germany were mia and i'm going to use. bad language here i have to say we're mere burchett's you know for one thousand years of successful german history. it's the this is the f.t. the biggest opposition party in germany at this point in time great concern among commentators politicians and ordinary people and deeply disturbing and it should be noted all also that charlie no global she addressed the the bavarian parliament
10:10 am
also on a holocaust remembrance day the a f t faction there apparently got up and walked out because of statements that just a few days ago. the resurgence of such as in germany do you see that is that something when witnesses i mean are there incidents increasing incidents of very much so the government has established a sort of official. votes mano a commission for to to take the battle against anti semitism up and they have begun now collating the figures the figures do appear to be on the rise the question is are they on the rise because there are more incidents of because people are reporting the instance more frequently there can be no doubt however in germany that jews do feel very very threatened by incidents on the street incidents in public transport incidents in restaurants incidents on school yards and it goes all in all i'm so this is a myth you know this is
10:11 am
a major concern and i have spoken to jewish leaders personally jewish people who are if he meets every day here in germany who are saying yes they are beginning to think about what happens if it gets worse still i found it also very interesting what cell freelander was saying in his commemorative address he was saying that the resurgence of anti-semitism is not just limited to the to the far right but you're hearing it also on the far left he says he also got quite political in that respect said that it exposes itself at the summit is also in the questioning of israel's right to exist you know very poignant for there was quite strong in that no i mean he made the point that you know when. he told his own personal story about how he was split up from his parents about how he survived the holocaust in a french in a french boarding school and then he went to israel and discovered his jewishness in israel he fought for the israeli forces in israel before going and really
10:12 am
settling more in the united states but israel is very very much his home his heartland and that was a very important point for him to make there i think the another thing that he said i thought that was very important aside from chronicling the the grisly details of the holocaust and also the knowledge that germans head about the holocaust on its way already in the early one nine hundred forty s. . was what he was talking about in terms of values today in order to counter anti semitism he mentioned tolerance inclusion humanity and liberty and true democracy and praising germany also for upholding those values to some degree we have a sound bite also from freeland let's listen to just a section of what he had to say during his speech today. and for two days germany is
10:13 am
a changed germany as. thanks. to. our transformation is this experience since then what it is this one of the strongest. against against exactly the developments i just talked about we all hope. you. retain the moral rectitude to stand for tolerance and. humanity and liberty in the future in other words for true democracy. when a very interesting that he would make that statement at a time when in the german bundestag we now have a far right party we're seeing the rise of far right populism throughout europe. the contrast between those i found very interesting here although i mean when you to our viewers it's important to for them to hear this statement for example from
10:14 am
one of the f.t. leaders beyond her who's a particularly controversial figure but it credibly influential among the ranks of the t.v. we're talking here about today's remembrance ceremony in the bundestag and beyond her to not too long ago came out and said to germany was crippled by what he called it stupid politics of remembrance in germany did a one hundred eighty degree u. turn away from the current culture of remembrance this party is set to get maybe twenty percent plus. of the vote in free regional elections very important regional elections coming on as you know terry later in the year in in order and this is i mean clearly these are people who who believe in what their party propagates but there are germany very generous comments from seoul friedlander about germany being a change country but concerned about how germany is changing it or thank you so much put it. correspondent peter craven has been with us today covering the
10:15 am
remembrance holocaust remembrance ceremonies in the german bund his talk thank you very much for your observations and analysis peter you were watching d w news just a reminder of our top story of course german lawmakers have held a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of the nazi regime in his keynote address holocaust survivor at historian saul friedlander war against research. first cloning listen. as grand moment arrives. to join in on her journey back to freedom. now working interactive documentary. and already getting returns home. don't come to tanks.
