a resurgence of empty semitism and asked germans to remain vigilant. also coming up waving flags and calling for free elections venezuelans take to the streets and tell president nicolas maduro it is time to go they want the country's armed forces to back his rival the self declared interim president. plus america's midwest in the grip of a deadly deep freeze with temperatures colder than antarctica are reporters in chicago where daily life has ground to a halt and five years after the launch of the clean india campaign is the government for filling its promise to install millions of working toilets our correspondent visits several villages where people are still forced to relieve themselves in the open. and a visit to the gandhian town that has become a breeding ground for africa's boxing champions will meet the. next generation

hoping to make it big. i'm sara kelly welcome to the program in a ceremony marking the seventy fourth anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz concentration camp germans germany's parliament has held a ceremony honoring the victims of the nazi regime the nazis murdered an estimated six million jews as well as hundreds of thousands of cinta and roma disabled people and homosexuals over a million people were killed in auschwitz alone and well thanks i've led the president of the german bundestag and holocaust survivor and historian saul friedlander spoke to lawmakers and guests. and watching that speech for us was our very own peter craven and i mean really an impactful commemoration that we saw this morning what stood out to you today what
11:03 am
sort of to me was there was an impressive individual soul fruitland there isn't but in his double role he's a historian on the one hand has an international reputation of course as a historian of the holocaust and the jews and he talks about of the gruesome details of the terrible numbers and of the facts and figures of what happened in the final solution and what people knew and what people didn't know that then he went on to his other oh he's knows the story and he's a survivor of the same time he told from a very personal details about how he was separated for example from his parents and i think is nine hundred forty two in vichy france he was he then survived the war in a french boarding school but they were then they were taken off to auschwitz and they were murdered and he asked the question what do we thinking we spent those last seconds together looking at each other knowing what was going to who were likely going to happen and it was very very moving to contemplate that and especially you know considering the backdrop against which he against which wolf was speaking
11:04 am
today i mean there's this is really a time of growing concern because anti-semitism is on the rise in europe and that is something that both of them addressed i just want to have a quick listen and then get your reaction there after. this regime it is a source of great shame to us that jews are once again thinking about emigrating from germany because they do not feel safe in our country because they are exposed to hostility even physical attacks because jewish children in schools are bullied. but it is not enough to experience a sense of shame. in addition to exerting the full power of. our resistance in every day life is especially needed. racism and discrimination of all kinds. of the. me this was. semitism is just one of the plagues that are now creeping into one nation after another.
11:05 am
us. the temptations of authoritarian government. growing nationalism on the rise everywhere in the world in disturbing ways. so. often for. smuggling. and we can see the lawmakers there sitting listening to what extent is what was just said there on their minds today. and that as a people we saw sitting there right at the front of the area of the parliament where the representatives of the alternative for germany elissa vital and alexander golland were sitting there and this is what immediately comes to mind for very many parliamentarians the fact that he is now represented in the german parliament and in all sixteen regional parliaments across the country there going to be three key
11:06 am
regional elections this year where he is expected to search so still further and there can be no doubt about it that have been anti semitic comments from within the ranks of the day in recent times and comments also when it comes to remembering the holocaust. there. i'm interested. many house become one of the strongest bastions against exactly the dangers i just talked about. we all hope that you retain the moral rectitude to stand for tolerance and inclusion. not empty on liberty and the future. are the words that you continue to fight for true democracy. and is that what we're hearing from the politicians it's interesting to hear so friedlander talking about germany being a change germany because people. say concerned about the future there is definitely
11:07 am
a rise in anti semitism globally as soul friedlander said around europe and in germany as well in germany very many jewish people say that the vast majority say that that in their personal lives on a day to day basis the number of anti semitic incidents in and attacks indeed has been on the rise there's great concern about that house of address that at this point in time especially know that the whole culture of remembrances is beginning to change because the generation who can give original personal testimony the generation of the survivors people like so friedland they're beginning to pass away significant numbers and that is a huge concern because how do you how do you go what's the next step in the culture of remembrance after that so what is being done right now in that or to prepare for that peter to prepare for the fact that you know the holocaust should never be forgotten. there's a lot of talk about addressing young people and their concerns but there's been a survey recently that suggested that as many as forty percent of young germans have practically no idea about what the holocaust stands for what really happened
11:08 am
and how would you address those young people it's been tried germany has tried very very hard indeed and been praised by israel and israelis and jewish commentators for this. addressing the very very darkest chapters of its history in the. ghouls and exchange visits taking young children to concentration comes but it all has to be done the there's a whole science to this about how you it's not just taking young children to concentration camps it's making it so allowing them to think and think for themselves and develop their own response to the challenges posed by these great crimes to really feel it it's unclear that they're craven from did the unions thank you so much for joining us. from now to some other news and us president donald trump has been reacting to protests across venezuela reiterating his backing for self-proclaimed interim president one quite oh from called fresh protests against incumbent president nicolas maduro

going to. be a business so how exactly is this game supposed to function aaron well basically the insect system will allow european companies to do trade with iran by said it kind of a triangular trade system basically iran will be able to sell oil in other products to european companies and they are the money that they would actually be earning from there will be transferred directly to iran instead will be held in escrow by the. group and then if iran orders products from european companies instead of transferring that money from iran directly this insects ripple pay those european companies where their products and then they'll send them to iran basically allows them to circumvent the u.s. sanctions that were recently put back and it was going to be interesting to see how the united states indeed response to all of this because i mean now they know that they're trying to circumvent them but ultimately you know the founding nations what are they hoping to achieve here well i mean basically it is a message sent directly to donald trump and washington i mean the european powers have made no secret of it that they don't support the unilateral reintroduction of
11:17 am
sanctions that we saw earlier in the trumpet ministration they're trying to send a message to tehran to run saying look you know we've got your back we're standing on your side when it comes to this issue because at the end of the day we're only really talking about rather small amounts of products that can be sent back this is only really targeting agricultural goods and medicine this isn't the type of thing that could turn around the ill fated marine economy right now so more than anything else this is a message directed both at tehran you know that they want to support them and also at washington saying that they don't support the current policy of the trump administration fascinating stuff that's in its infancy so we'll see how it develops and thank you. now it's being called the biggest toilet building spree in the world but in twenty fourteen indian prime minister narendra modi launched his clean india campaign the aim to eliminate the widespread practice of people relieving themselves in the open in the countryside now five years later is the program working our india
