welcome to your business update i'm john elder thank you for joining us u.s. job growth the surge in january with employees with employers hiring the most workers in eleven months that's in spite of the partial government shutdown and a darkening outlook which has made the federal reserve shy away from more interest rate hikes the u.s. labor department said last month's jump of three hundred four thousand jobs that was the largest gain since february twenty eighth. job growth was mainly in construction retail hospitality and business services the unemployment the unemployment rate did rise slightly in january to four percent mainly because roughly one hundred seventy five thousand federal workers were counted as temporary relief unemployed because of the shutdown. now for a quick check on the markets with our financial correspondent yens court of. expectations

and massively surpassed without u.s. jobs report is that cause for optimism after months of concern over growth. yes certainly hardly anybody is talking about a possible recession in the u.s. middle east in the next couple of months at this point and it was a very strong jobs report for the hundred consecutive months jobs got created in the united states that is an all time record the previous record came from the ninety's so when we had forty eight consecutive months of job gains not everything might be picture perfect was the u.s. economy but at least for now things are looking quite solid when this comes to the u.s. economy and look at another big number so amazon made a record breaking seventy two billion dollars over the holiday season alone but has warned of a slowdown so what are investors expecting well i mean the stock came under
12:33 am
quite some pressure here on friday dropping by a good five percent but if you look at the size of amazon it's not that easy to keep growing as they've done in the past couple of years for the third consecutive quarter and as a record profit more than three billion dollars and if you have the size it is not easy to keep growing as much and that's what is making investors a bit nervous you also have to look at the stock performance of amazon and the past couple of years in the past three years the stock has increased by more than two hundred percent it is the most valuable company on the planet and you need more growth numbers to push stocks further and that's the reason why we saw a brief sell off of amazon here in the friday session. he hands carter there for us

on wall street thank you very much for your analysis now staying with corporate news germany's largest lender deutsche bank has reported a profit for last for the last fiscal year it's the first time germany's erstwhile premium lender was in the black since twenty fourteen according to the bank's numbers dortch a bank made around three hundred fifty million in profits slightly lower than analyst expectations they again brace speculation about a merger with germany's smaller rival comments by a solution favored by the german government but skeptics say the resulting bank would still be too small to be competitive bank has been under intense scrutiny amid ongoing legal troubles or recently it's all raised in connection to a money laundering investigation. ugandan officials seized the largest contraband shipment of ivory and pangle in scales they've ever taken in a single operation all told the hall is estimated to have a market value of around eight million dollars ugandan authorities have been

stepping up efforts to crack down on illegal trading and elephant tusks rhino horns and pangolin scales especially to asia there they sell for thousands of dollars a kilo for use in ornaments and medicines. the ugandan customs checked every container but they were suspicious about this one because it came into the country boy a convoluted route from the democratic republic of congo through south sudan to the ugandan border inside to tropical timber but the tree trunk said be hollowed out and filled with ivory where the book to intercept city are by trying to contain as we've. been containing oaktree to vietnamese nationals have been arrested and officials believe the ivory was headed for the asian market three hundred twenty five elephants had to be killed for these ivory. they were also the scales

of hundreds of endangered paying delimiters. for us this is one of the biggest koch interception of boards which are prohibited to be traded in on the international. sites so we believe that this is a vice that's of one session the nature of the two stocks we are now getting them attacking us from them the smugglers hadn't reckoned with state of the out scanners at this border crossing but as long as there is a market they will be smuggling. now one of europe's most ambitious engineering projects seems to be back on track with italian politicians really expressing interest in an alpine rail tunnel that was a sore point with some parties of the new government the tunnel would transform logistics between italy and france by connecting turin and with a high speed rail way under the alps shaving hours off the journey the last link is a tunnel between italy and sunshine to my all in france where the length of fifty

seven kilometers. italy's euro skeptic interior minister matteo salvini had previously said he supported a review of the high speed rail way project he was singing a different tune on friday when he visited the construction site. it's an incredible work it's something to be proud of infiltration everything on time and money saved stopping the construction work would be disrespectful to the workers and would be of no advantage to italy having men and goods travelling on the rail and not on highways is better for the environment it reduces pollution. the project goes right to the heart of the division between italy's populist coalition parties italy's hard right pro-business league party wants the tunnel to go ahead as do two thirds of the telly. range anxiety is one reason why electric vehicles have so far failed to get significant traction in germany that's the fear your car will run out

of battery before you get to where you want to go charging costs don't help either but a push for a cleaner city and greener transport has put the german city of solving and ahead of the game they have buses that travel on overhead electric lines take a look. your guys and has been driving the obama for thirty six years old bus installing and this is a cross between a bus and a tram before starting the journey the driver has to connect the car and collectors to the overhead power line to establish contact with the power grid. the trolley poles have to connect to the contact wire with centimeter precision if it's windy it can take a while in. the city of and near cologne has one hundred kilometers of overhead power lines during the journey the trolley buses have a constant supply of power. it's normal i don't know any other way you know
12:39 am
first of all they're quiet or they don't dirty up the city centers so that's great but. at a construction site or a detour the buses can also disconnect from the contact wire. the vehicle has to remain motionless so that the electronics can carry out the switching process it takes less than ten seconds. even without an overhead line the new buses simply drive on electrically while driving on the wire they fully charged they have better ease and can like to travel twenty kilometers on their own. four particularly powerful batteries in the rear of the bus make it possible. to design for. the future is simple we can recharge the battery in a very short time and extract a lot of energy from it is no difference when driving so passengers don't really
12:40 am
notice that the buses and driving on the power lines anymore that's. the new battery trolley buses should only detach themselves from the overhead line you know exceptional cases but that happens regularly starting in the spring of twenty nineteen they'll also be driving routes. normal diesel buses are still in operation step by step as all again wants to move away from diesel. for six we already drive sixty five percent electric and after they electrify the next diesel bus line will be at seventy percent we're considering how to get to eighty percent and perhaps we can do it all by twenty twenty one twenty twenty two so that we're quite close to achieving the complete transition by twenty thirty. you've overlooked we're really saw. there are buses on the overhead line in almost three hundred cities worldwide diesel buses now same old fashioned compared to brand new trolley buses.
