truth's detectives starts feb fifteenth on t.w. . you. claim. this is do or use live from berlin a reality check for britain's brags that we negotiation hopes of being told. what the special place. in the her looks like photos cool promoters great to result even a sketch of the plot of how to cover the safety of europe's tempers fray as theresa may prepares to go cap in hand to brussels well for now she's still trying to sell
5:01 pm
her deal in northern ireland also coming up another devastating revelation from the catholic church pope francis admits for the first time that some priests and bishops have sexually abused not so i'll speak to a survivor of sexual abuse within the catholic church and u.s. president donald trump delivers a second state of the union address calling for national unity but at the same time lunching out at his opponent is. a lot of think you so much for your company everyone. well the narrower the bridge the deadline comes the more frayed the nerves of political leaders seem to get on the eve of british prime minister teresa mayes crucial visit to brussels european council president donald to screw revealed mounting frustration over the impasse he
5:02 pm
underlined once more that the european union insists it will not reopen the existing brigs the deal and he did it in a rather remarkable tone here's what he had to say. by the way i've been wondering what that special place in looks like for those who promote a great feat without even a sketch of a plan on how to cover it so you. think. well talks a statement came at the very moment to recently was meeting northern ireland five main political parties as she seeks to break the deadlock over the terms of britain's exit from the european union talks were focused on arrangements for the irish border while the issue were maine's the single biggest obstacle to the british parliament ratifying the deal. all right well for more on
5:03 pm
all of this let's bring in quite an appeal he's an associate fellow at the europe program of the think tank chatham house in london a very good evening mr pm now mr tusk is known for not mincing his words for being at times provocative intentionally so but this is particularly strong wording coming from him as you council president. yes i think it just shows the enormous frustration that is being felt in brussels that. the british government simply not coming up with clarity and a clear plan of what sort of deal it wants in the end because the reason may is still desperately trying to find some way of uniting you have a very divided government and party in essentially proposing how we get out of the european union and mr tusk is saying i think very
5:04 pm
understandably that to have entered these had to negotiations with one to game plan and without clarity is just very frustrating to everybody involved in the prospect of a new deal bret's it is looming larger and larger which would not only be a disaster for britain it to be a disaster for oland village be very painful for the rest of the european union now mr peel reaction that where you are has been fast and furious especially from a leading up breaks of tears in great britain nigel for russia leading the pack former leader of the euro skeptic party ukip tweeted this in response to mr tusks comments. after a break that we will be free of i'm not elected arrogant bullies like you and run our own country sounds more like heaven to me. mr peel sounds like
5:05 pm
to say there. that though the reaction has been swift and immediate in the united kingdom walk us through some of the reactions there when you are. well the leader of the house of commons who is a member of the government and relents and was also very outspoken and said these remarks were described as well and quite an exceptional and he should apologize the truth is though that both mr for russia and indeed misled some have been clearly among those who did not have a clear plan as to how the british should leave the european union not just whether they should leave that was what they said we're going to leave but they never had a plan and the internal problem with these negotiations over the last two years has been that the european union has been negotiating with a government that didn't have any agreement on where it wanted to go how it was
5:06 pm
going to do it and to reason may is still desperately negotiating now in northern ireland today trying to see whether there's any way that she can amend this insurance policy to ensure that there is no irish border inside the republic of ireland between the republic of ireland the northern ireland after bret's it and she's come up with no clear solution the that is going to be acceptable to either side and all of this of course when it happened today a unfolding a less than twenty four hours before prime minister may have goes to brussels i mean this just doesn't bode well for her or the u.k. at the moment. it does not i mean the opposition labor party which is also divided on what it wants to do has come up today and say look we got to ask some sort of extension because it's perfectly clear that we're not ready to leave on the
5:07 pm
twenty nine months which is supposedly the deadline but again the european union side has said look we'll certainly consider an extension but you've got to have a plan as to what might be deliverable and i think this is the problem in brussels i hear more and more people are afraid that the british made by accident crash out without any deal of trouble and that in a way is precisely the the game of chicken that juries a man her government seem to be playing that trying to terrify the hard line breaks it is in their own ranks into voting for a compromise deal but i terrifying the there might be no deal but there's a big problem with that game of chicken that some of these hard line breaks it is i don't care if there's no deal they actually want to crash out and those are the people i think mr dustings there may be

a special place in hell and then quentin p.-l. who is with the chatham house in london sir always great to have you on the show. all right and next up we're going to shift our attention to the catholic church which has been hit by yet another abuse scandal for the first time pope francis has acknowledged that high ranking members of the clergy have sexually abused and raped nuns francis admits suspending priests and bishops for abusing women and promise to do more to eradicate the problem in a moment we'll hear from a german nun who was abused herself but first this report on the vatican's culture of secrecy. nuns throughout the world abused and even held as sexual slaves by priests and bishops faced with a growing international outcry about the latest scandal to rock the catholic church the pope could no longer remain silent. on the mistreatment of women is
5:09 pm
a problem. i would dare to say that humanity has not yet matured one quarter. women are second class citizens that's where it starts. that is a cultural problem. problem of. a cultural problem that the holy see itself isn't immune to the vatican has reportedly long known about nuns being sexually abused by priests and done next to nothing to address the matter it was first publicly acknowledged as a structural issue by the vatican magazine women church world. basically the church has a great tradition and habit of not seeing women at things they don't exist they don't count then this is a mentality that is resistant to all changes with and there's another problem many of these women have been forced to have abortions with money from the church
5:10 pm
bishops and priests have paid but this is a very bad thing for a church that fights abortion and this is dramatic that. last year various media outlets in clerical women's organizations denounced the culture of silence and secrecy that prevented nuns from speaking out. and that's one of those out there that if an abused nun goes to her superior and says that she has suffered abuse she will be told to shut up with because if you don't this bishop will turn against us the noise. the power that these bishops and priests have has become truly dreadful for madeline that i mean. the consequences have been too difficult for them to bear but would have put up. with more and more abuse cases being brought to light pope francis is now vowing to step up efforts to protect nuns from unwanted sexual advances by clergymen. i can't slow you this doesn't happen in
5:11 pm
my heart this is true. should something will be done yes you do have the will yes. but it's a process that we've been on for quite some time. the pope has off the faithful to pray for progress on the issue but many want to see action now not just was. our offer more on this so i want to bring in doris start rising or she is a former nun and has herself suffered sexual abuse by a priest and today she is a catholic login and author and has published a book about her experience as a very warm welcome why you're joining us from the german city of fiber. what do you make of the pope publicly acknowledging that sexual abuse of nuns took place within the church. well on the one hand it's definitely
5:12 pm
a relief it's a my assume because it's the first time ever a pope has moved at these cases ixus and i think i'm a person and relief that this has happened on the other hand it's. that and i'm wondering you know when the pope is speaking about what he has done so far and really wondering what has he done because i know many of those cases and i don't know any case spirit somebody would really have stepped in and pepper trick has gotten some sanctions so i'm wondering it also to the rest of the amount you know there has been these cases have been known for over two decades now and they have been known publicly that since at least since two thousand and one then reports been more i don't know where to buy the new york times and back then there were still statement no reaction from the church so today after what you've seen and what you've just
5:13 pm
a detailed as well how much faith do you have in the church that they will now punish and fight sexual abuse within the church. i'm afraid i don't not really favor take any proper sanctions on any and the proper. reaction to these cases. the church will only ever admit what it cannot longer deny but. i don't have any hope that. proper reactions are being taken now how you were to book detailing your painful experiences may i ask you to sure with us some of what has happened to you. well you know i don't like to speak about it actually. i entered the crime and been ever us nineteen years old in two thousand and three and at first i experienced spirit to abuse various forms of you know i was not a right and how to read books i was not allowed to go out i was not about to
5:14 pm
contact my parents when i pushed. and i had to do very simple broke you know collect cleaning and cooking all day long and that was very hard for me and in the end you know five years. after i had been treated like this that was a priest of the community who came into my room and ripped me. and as i said it took me three more year as two to leave that community and after that evan i wrote my book i was contacted by other women who told me their stories and i did research being i thought oh sure i did research on this and i found a study that was carried out in one thousand in one thousand nine hundred in the usa by three researchers and they and tip night dr and world of and they'd ask of women from three different communities in the united states and felt out at approximately forty percent of them had experienced various forms of sexual abuse
5:15 pm
and ever so shocked when i found that out and then i found that the report spend more or donaghue and others who reported cases in twenty three countries from precedent over ireland african countries to the philippines versus says had been sexually abused by priests by bishops had been forced to have abortions had been thrown out of the convents even sisters having die eight. through abortions and ever so shocked on this especially because it was all known to the vatican already in the one nine hundred ninety s. and it was known publicly at least since two thousand and one and nothing ever happened and i'm really skeptical of whether anything is going to happen now but at least a pope has admitted these cases exist. how difficult is it after all that you just shared with us is that to speak out about this issue. i would say for many
5:16 pm
for many nuns it is next to impossible to ever speak about these cases because they're so dependent on the system they're sort of pendant financially there are none so cannot be if they're convents because they're financially dependent the kind of build up and and i feel their own and their own and then they're also spiritually dependent on the convent you know their whole life the whole idea of them sort of said the book ation. depends on the convent and this religious system and they have no means to create a different identity for themselves and this is why they can't speak out because you should be inside the convents they don't have the support to report the perpetrators and to get justice done what would you ideally like to see happen now but i would ideally like to see that the perpetrators who are already known to the
5:17 pm
vatican being persecuted i would like to see that the victims who are already now known to the vatican get some kind of recompensation and i would like to that more research is being done independent research all over the boat on these cases how are you doing now. well on the one hand i'm happy these cases have come out and the pope has admitted them and there is much attention to these cases right now on the other hand i'm right doubtful as to what is going to happen but at least they're speaking about these cases and i hope this helps more victims realize what has happened to them and come forward course rising up thank you so very much for sharing your very deeply personal experiences with us we greatly appreciate it thank you thank you. all right want to bring up to speed now with some of the other stories making news around the world. the european commission has blocked

western arms to yemeni militias in a report the group says iranian forces received billions worth of arms from western states and siphoned them off to militias in yemen that have been committing war crimes amnesty also says countries like australia france germany and the us were involved in the trade and urges them to stop supplying arms to the conflict. all right i want to welcome now my colleague mathias fun hine he is w.'s investigative reporter good to see you now amnesty is accusing the u.a.e. of diverting arms siphoning arms basically off to militia in yemen arms incidentally supplied by a western states like germany does that make germany complicit in the in the conflict in yemen. i think it really does and especially since
5:20 pm
a lot of what's in the city report details has for a long time been known among experts and only now probably you know with the weight of an amnesty report it comes to light that. these end user to ficus that need to be signed by in this case by the. buyers of arms in this case the united arab emirates are not worth the paper they're written on we have seen a lot of incidents where some supplied arms have been sufficient off have been diverted to. various militias in yemen. actually even last november there was an investigative report by d.w. arabia. that detailed a lot of you know what was going on there ok briefly explain to us what would you mean by end you certificate what does that mean and you certificate means that in

order to get deals registered. buying country has sort of to promise that it will not divert the weapons they receive from a certain cell or in this case germany's that's what it means all right but a lot of times as it has been seen as a young conflict. goes and you the certificates are basically sand in the eyes of the public to make some. well known to not raise suspicions about those arms sales because it specially in western europe we have a very skeptical public when it comes to arm sales so what i wonder is why is the u.a.e. in the spotlight right now because i mean i'm guessing other countries are doing the same. well saudi arabia for instance is doing the same but i think. the united arab emirates probably nolen the spotlight because they have sort

of sailed a bit in the shadow of saudi arabia remember it took the murder of just the. saudi consulate in istanbul last year to put to yemen the war and what the saudi led coalition is doing there in the spotlight in the first place but role of the emirates has not yet been received the tension it deserves at least in my eyes and it seems that the emirates are playing a kind of game of like the enemy of my enemy is my friend and therefore as a supply salafi jihad this militia. those sometimes with links to al qaida with the weapons they receive from western countries always weapons they produce themselves with licenses from western countries right to my ts find hind of your best to get a reporter thank you. thank stuff we had
