bialik guest. managed by for. this is g.w. news live from berlin tonight while the people of venezuela go hungry the even it's one of the regime tells the outside world keep your aid to yourself nicolas maduro has ordered the army to stop a humanitarian convoy eighth at the country's border self-proclaimed interim president one is calling on the military to defy those orders to allow feigele food
8:01 pm
and medicine into the country also coming up the u.s. and france want brylin to abandon the pipeline supplying russian gas saying it could undermine security for western europe the german chancellor angela merkel says that criticism is unfounded plus the curtain goes up on this year's berlin film festival there are seventeen films in competition this year including the kindness of strangers by director chair feet we'll have a preview of that and the many other treats the hitting the silver screen this year . i'm burnt off it's good to have you with us tonight the people of venezuela again now look set to pay the price for the country's pollute. economic collapse after
8:02 pm
a tense standoff over a humanitarian aid convoy of venezuela's government led by nicolas maduro has ordered the army not to allow it into the country from neighboring colombia so the road has been blocked at the border the aid has been organized by the united states and venezuela's opposition who want to see madeira removed from power and it's why those military now faces a choice to obey government orders or to let the aid go through and get to the people we have this report. that is wailin soldiers keep watch at the barricades of the ten deep this bridge border crossing president nicolas maduro has called aid supplies offered by the united states a form of foreign intervention he's ordered the soldiers to turn the assistance away. but the soldiers have also been given another order by one why don't the opposition leader who last month declared himself venezuela's interim president.
8:03 pm
and it was not a. lunatic and i gave a direct order to the armed forces seen any allow the necessary humanitarian aide to enter to take care of your own family. that is put the focus on the military personnel at the border and their commanders which president will they obey. pedestrian bridges of the border remain open venezuelans can still cross to buy goods they can't get at home but many who have no money to go shopping in neighboring colombia don't understand why the aid shipments are being stopped. i am asking you to please open the border. and let the food pass. if like you say you really love been a swale or if you really feel something inside of you only if you love your family your children and you should to love them then you need to love us venezuelans as
8:04 pm
well i am asking you please open the border mist in the jura that. might do or has dismissed the us aid offer as a political show in the capital caracas supporters signed a petition that's to be sent to washington telling donald trump to keep his hands off of venezuela. make him are not bad we want to safeguard our rights and interests because external forces are attempting to seize our national wealth i. had a military rally on wednesday when they were called on troops to show patriotism and unite against the us. ima feel i mean we've been threatened by the us empire by the president of the united states of america mr donald trump. as you know the not. for now the border troops still appear to be following the orders of nicolas maduro there are concerns this aid standoff could escalate.
8:05 pm
all right i'm joined now on the phone by journalist he is at that border between venezuela and colombia can you hear me it's a contender for. good we understand that the u.s. and aid shipment that convoy is expected to arrive at the border soon so are we supposed to imagine that we're going to see this long line of trucks with aid basically stopping there where the blockade on that highway is no absolutely not we've been waiting a few dates that are ready for day care center right and click on the border with friends around. a sort of search confirm that at this moment we can expect the first truck there right there will basically carry a good product i've seen a critic and so medicine but that but most of it. we don't know how many trips
8:06 pm
exactly right but they're not spend it's only the first everything that's coming be expect more right there right over the next day and in the meanwhile it will be stored. in a hangar close to the border there are security measures and prevent this and there's no guarantee that they will cross the border so ok so so those trucks then when they arrive they're going to be able to unload their goods or at least store them in a hangar but the people are not going to have access to that as it stands right now so what are the people telling you there and what is the mood there near the border . the mood is pretty much determined by a mass presence of local venezuelan and international media outlets. thirty's have been pretty dramatic and i quite understand it because there is no guarantee you get it and it's. through the federal government for the proof the entrance of packages so there is no guarantee. that can move forward and they're
8:07 pm
also discussing here aren't troops on the border but might back up the french ready . to make their united so i think that has international fame first needs to negotiate yen terms of course it will if not it will be a last mission well we understand these european in latin american leaders that came together today in montevideo in europe why they called for an international initiative and for that it's a way let this initiative is that what you're looking for you're looking for that initiative to be the one that's going to get this border open. no i think it's a different issue to the united states with colombia organize a different approach basically trying to force your might there you. know now that that's not going to happen easily and you're being union on the other hand and the international partners that are president montevideo uruguay they're looking for a more negotiated approach. which is not right in the face of saying it's right in
8:08 pm
the border they want to have more. security about humanitarian aid and. dialogue with effective israeli government ok so we've got two approaches they are in the process all the while the people of venezuela are still waiting for food and medicine journalist from a bus joining us tonight on the phone from the venezuelan border with colombia thank you. well now to south africa the president there. has promised reform in his state of the nation speech though he also announced that parliamentary elections will take place on may eighth roma hoess ruling a.n.c. party is under pressure after mounting evidence of corruption of flagging economy not to mention the high unemployment opposition parties are accusing the president of failing to address the problems since president jacob zuma was. a year ago.
8:09 pm
on a difference a year makes i'm joined here at the big table now by my colleague christine no one wants she's from our africa desk you know we've talked about this situation many times and now we're talking about president ramaphosa that in his message to south africans here tonight so what was that what was the biggest takeaway you know what tonight you heard a president who was basically saying to the country the rate i came to you and i said when i go into office i'm going to create jobs i'm going to bring investment into the country and i'm going to tackle corruption and so you pretty much outlined a few things that he has done in that regard he talked about how foreign direct investment into the country had grown exponentially in the give that he was president ok he compared that to the year that zuma was there before and it is a very big number he also talked about the fact that state institutions branch these are institutions that we've seen in the country being used by corrupt politicians to protect them or to promote the interest he said that their
8:10 pm
independence was going to be restored he talked about the fact that jobs were going to be brought back into the country so if this was really a prison i mean tonight he was speaking in his capacity as a statesman right this wasn't about the head of a government this is the head of state so he's got to speak more broadly to the whole country but he was basically telling south africans that i've kept my promises and there is an election coming up keep me around and one of those promises has also been the land reform i want to hear take a listen to what room if i had to say about this. you know as part of what celebrating very beautiful we have i didn't too far lend apostles owned by the state for the distribution start to do can be located. were released to our address human settlements. and very. strategically located what in ok you know what if he goes no further on it gets even more confusing the point is this branch of got some radical parties that have
8:11 pm
into the political scene right namely the economic freedom fries and they're basically saying to south africans we get their land back as black south africans and what our problems will be that's pushed the a.n.c. into a corner suddenly they see now has to talk lend when they talk to other africans because of africans say to them well why can't you get our land back for us so he has quite a play this balancing act the way he can sort of a peace people right now without outright saying we're going to take the lead without compensating some of those radical parties all morning all so this is him diplomatically saying look we've got some land as the stage and we're going to give that to homeless people to live in an urban area so it's a way of sort of managing expectations ican come out and say what the other parties are pushing him to say we're going to take this man without compensating people but he also needs to say something and that is that something that we heard from him ok kristie one month or more african just as always we appreciate your insights she's been. well here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world officials in the brazilian city of rio de janeiro say heavy rain and high
8:12 pm
speed winds have killed at least five people and left a trail of destruction experts say a full month's worth of rain fell in just two hours the mayor has declared three days of mourning british prime minister to resign may and european commission president john claude younker have pledged to continue talks about it but young girl once again refused to renegotiate the terms of the already agreed upon withdrawal deal overseeing britain's divorce from the e.u. regs that you may recall that is set to begin on march twenty ninth france has recalled its ambassador to italy christiane must say after a series of verbal assaults by italy's two deputy prime ministers on president. relations between italy and france have grown increasingly tense since the mid two thousand and eighteen mostly because of disagreements over migration policy.
8:13 pm
if a migration to energy here in germany plans for a pipeline supplying russian gas had been thrown into doubt by concerted international opposition the us ambassador to berlin has urged germany to ditch the nord stream two project and now france says it could halt the construction process by subjecting the russian company building it to tougher european union rules critics say the pipeline which is due to start pumping later this year will make germany dependent on moscow and undermine european security bet leaves a key part of germany's energy strategy under threat. construction of the north stream to pipeline is already well underway but the face of the project lies in the balance e.u. members have not yet agreed on how to proceed and germany and france in particular and pair to be at odds over regulation of the pipeline but transport gosford russia to germany via the baltic sea the project in its current form is operated by
8:14 pm
russian state energy company. several german energy firms and one french company have also invested in assets at the heart of division within the e.u. is a plan to extend the blocks rules to foreign operations pipelines e.u. regulations require a separation of sales and pipeline operation activities should those rules be extended to gas problem it would mean that the project in its current form at least could not precede. changes in the pipeline the story. kate at the big table and in brussels our very own barbara let me start with you this last minute announcement by france that it could support. extending the european control over the project i mean how much of a of a setback is this for. that is a rather serious setback for germany and also throws some doubt of course on the
8:15 pm
state of french german relations because france has had germany's back if for this project for quite some time now the two big countries so formed a blocking majority minority in the deliberations of the european council of and governments meet and discuss this and so this is the regulation couldn't go ahead france no turns away the question is why is some speculate that they are finally caving in to us american pressure in order to save guard their own energy investments within russia and their own economic interests there and then there is also. the fact that in munda mccrone the french president is not going to be here next on the weekend long side under the americans the munich security conference so there is a lot of whirling around and nobody could knows quite what's what at the moment that is a surprise to hear that about the munich security conference so what does this mean
8:16 pm
then for german relations play certainly not a positive sign and it could be just another issues to add to that ever growing list of disagreements that we've seen growing over the past few months now between france and germany on any kind of issue from finance to energy to military to e.u. reforms you name it that is on that list of disagreements right now between france and germany but if you compare that to the symbolic friendship that's a completely different bowl game say obviously when it comes to policies france and germany still have a lot to agree on you know they just renewed the friendship pact two weeks ago which is makes it even more disturbing what we're hearing tonight the u.s. ambassador richard grinnell he has also weighed in on the issue would he's urging germany to abandon nord stream the german chancellor angela merkel she has responded to that take a listen. and i not think it will be
8:17 pm
become dependent on russia because of this gas pipeline when i say no if we diversify at the same time. germany will expand its gas terminals with regard to liquefied gas. is that means that we don't want to make ourselves dependent on russia and that in these circumstances. but russia was a source of gas during the cold war and it will remain so today without us entering into a one sided dependence. is that enough to. reassure critics of this deal i don't think it will be enough to quieten down that criticism right now based defense of the project that we heard from merkel today is nothing new she's been defending this project for months now and so complaints even from the u.s. which isn't actually directly involved in this project i don't think they are going to go away overnight if anything since donald trump became that the u.s. president the those complaints over this project have been getting louder and
8:18 pm
louder from washington so i think there would have to be an awful lot of opposition again even maybe even from the e.u. as you were discussing with barbara that it would take a lot of opposition to bring this project to a halt and of course a lot has also been infested in it and there are also already being huge environmental impacts right brady here the big zipper with me involved in brussels to both of you thank you germany's antitrust watchdog is cracking down on facebook moving to restrict the social media giants ability to collect data in the country authorities say you cannot gather information from third party sites without user consent more evidence that facebook's business model could be under threat. the focus was on the data facebook collects from third party websites examples include the like and share buttons under news articles similar functions are enabled on it instagram and
8:19 pm
walked up platforms according to the ruling these data streams give facebook an overwhelming advantage in the digital advertising market is this officials argue requires users consent. is being used to say good news for fans in the whole conclusion is that facebook. on its platform invites. facebook facebook can also continue to gather data on its other services. or instagram third party sites. they may in the future. only with the user's explicit consent of the. indies it's. very clear. like in most countries facebook is the leading social media network in germany it has more than thirty million users it also owns the second most popular
8:20 pm
social network instagram which has some seventeen million users that leaves the competition far behind. facebook said officials underestimated the level of competition it faced within the country it's vowed to appeal. it has a month to do so and fewer must offer remedies to the cartel office or fines the decision is the latest by european officials to challenge the market dominance of american tech the firms and reorientation practices to favor consumers last year the e.u. interactive regulation to allow users to view and withdraw their data online and member states are still debating a special tax for digital firms. well it is barreling all the time again the sixty nine berlin film festival is kicking off today and if you are a movie buff you are at the right location i'm joined now by charlotte what's
8:21 pm
what's been what's been the action on the red carpet its first day yet for me going on ariely a route is lucky as i've been there been sewn many hollywood a listers hitting the red carpet here behind me and that is because it's the opening night of ballons legendary international film festival among those who hit the red carpet and the mcdowell i don't know if you remember her for a start the long side hugh grant in that amazing film four weddings and if you know she was here and of course all the songs of tonight's opening film the film that kicks off this entire festival that's the kindness of strangers not to say good stuff that it krakow phil might be you might remember for in love actually is one thing is really electric here on the right carpet tens of thousands of people come to this festival every single year to check out the movies on display here to get a look at the stars and it really is an eclectic mix of so here there are seventeen
8:22 pm
in total competing for that coveted golden bad the top prize but will surely tell us a little bit more then about about the opening film. the kindness of strangers while the world premiere of that movie is happening right now and it's a film that deals with the human condition people who are in a difficult situation uniting and coming together i witness calling it sort of a dramatic version of love actually actually speaking of bill nye he's in the home they can really show us different plots different characters coming together and uniting at the end in quite a quite a lovely way oh it's directed by a danish director luna sheriff she's huge and demo on some of those but she's also pretty big internationally as well she's critically acclaimed she's been nominated for three oscars in her career she's also won a silver back as well and she said that what she really wanted to point ounce in this film was just how difficult life can be in new york where the film is set in
8:23 pm
america she said she didn't want it to be overtly political but she did point out that she could understand why some people might read some of the politics into it in fact bill nighy in a press conference ahead of the premiere for this for this film said that he thinks that it's important that any any film that shows ways that people united rather than divided at the moment in this current political climate is important that's right you can never have too much time just especially in today's world what is special about this year's billion dollar charlotte. well you could argue the bell and i was special every upright but this here there are a couple things that really stand out festival the director of the festival these are costly he's a really well known figure here on the red carpet he is retiring this is his last year he just got a really big round of applause from members of the audience gathered for the world premiere for his work they said that he's always managed to make this a political festival
8:24 pm
a festival that deals with the real issues of our time like migration for example is what i think that was listed they said that they hoped that that would be continued over the next few years and then the other huge factor at this festival is just the number of female directors who have films competing in this festival of the seventeen movies up in competition seven female directors taking part now that is way more than cannes last year and venice as well it really is an enormous figure say that's really something to be looking out for. what about we want to hear something from the jury president this year degree from a miss but no. he i could see had problems but. as a producer he was wonderful most of the time. and i think he was a great producer and that we shouldn't forget even though it's been difficult for direct some directors and actors and specially actresses i want to see peace to his
8:25 pm
mind and let justice do what he needs to do. justice to what it needs to do this once and. yes i want to give you some of the background to that because that really does need some explaining now if we're talking about women in film you can't not talk about the me too movement that's the movement that's really been consuming the film industry over the last couple of years and she was juliette binoche was asked a question by a member of the press about that movement because of course you have been or she has worked with harvey weinstein the man that she's referring to there in that clip in a number of her huge hollywood blockbusters she said that she felt that he just a should be done when it comes to how he was that he's the man who's accused of assaulting a number of women in the film industry and you never know she is clips that was something that really surprised a lot of reporters i think the idea that she that she called him a
8:26 pm
a wonderful producer that was something that's really made the headlines so far in the better very early stages of this festival. on the red carpet where this year's barely knowledge is getting underway show thank you very much we'll be talking with you a little bit later this evening. arza sports news now alexander schaeffer has been reelected president of european football's governing body you way for another four years scheffer and it was the only candidate for the post and secured his second term that you a visit and you will meeting in rome earlier he found that there'd be no breakaway super league involving europe's elite clubs under his tenure any such league would be a direct threat to the champions league wafers most lucrative club competition. or a trip to the news i'll be back at the top of the hour with more world news followed by the day don't forget you can get all the news on our website at the w dot com we'll see you again in about thirty minutes.
