the berlin film festival is underway and you don't use finest film buffs have been taking a first look at the newest cinema offerings. that's right with life in the great cop it from the legendary that is not and will be bringing you to the world premiere of talk french director post war zones latest drama. ilar thank you so much for your company everyone we begin with a devastating fire in brazil where ten people are believed to have died after a blaze tore through a soccer dormitory for young players at least three others were injured when a fire broke out before dawn on friday at brazil's biggest soccer club the flamingo in rio de janeiro at a training facility there all teenagers from the flamingo youth team are among the victims who were sleep. in the dormitory about the time that the fire broke out the
6:02 pm
expense of legal training center opened just two months ago because of the fire is not yet known. all right let's get you more on this developing story andrew downey is a sports sports journalist and author based in sao paolo brazil and he joins me now on the phone what more have you learned. there we know there are people who are being killed we know that at least one of the changes a young player at the club a young goalkeeper we have shot other reports of at least another five players among the dead we are still waiting to confirm that but it does seem certain the some of that there will be young players who were being at the club and training with the call of and and when you say young what what age range are we talking about. literal teenagers decision to use that were taken to hospital who were injured we were all between fourteen and fifteen so just the k.b.'s group that
6:03 pm
we're looking at it's pretty common you personal or close to one forming or like sounds like groups been to house clearance jump clearance or come from both saying the city there they are treating with the club will be to make the biggest players something that will be there for a short video trial or because of comparable say the city will father we be close to fill accommodations and lodgings and it is very common for the players to be to be provided by the club or to stay in the facility tell us a little bit andrew about this the training center what are facilities like there. well it's existed for quite a while but i really it would help get you to refurbish plus you have the audience of new facilities to it are open to all new in the same boat it was about four point seven billion refurbishment c.r.v. the whole reach of facilities including gyms you aquatic center it's for for
6:04 pm
training and for rehabilitation center open to the house since you appear to be huge to have a stroll studio this is all true to create the player. but will to want to play for what they want the club will be sold for your difference of money to two to europe one of those players was you need to lose your job it was sold to the officers last year for forty five million euros which treat that the disability was a typical example of agreeing to pull your results because of who is using will facilitate. this of course begs the question was there no smoke alarm or were the dormitories not we furbished. well we're told will be taken from darted to the fire department some say and then the are still investigating this they don't have a statistic called yet one young player said that. he said that the fire started in the newsroom and your conditioning unit you said that it caught fire so fire if
6:05 pm
you run or anybody could see we have also read reports of over little want to brazil's biggest newspaper saying that the club did not have the correct care but four of the four for the facility were still we've taken from die we there's a lot we feel that we just those just don't know you're all right and are down in sao paolo thank you so much for the update. over a dozen european and latin american countries have called on venezuela to hold free and fair elections to solve its deepening crisis after some five hours of talks in europe why a coalition of countries warned against rash intervention in venezuela foreign policy chief for the commodity nice at the group was committed to finding a peaceful democratic way out of the power struggle between nicolas my brutal and opposition leader. the u.s. statement came as trucks carrying u.s. humanitarian aid arrived at colombia's border with venezuela the bridge into the
6:06 pm
country or means blocked by the military present nicolas maduro says the shipments are part of a u.s. led cooler temps. this is where their journey ends on the colombian venezuelan border desperately needed humanitarian aid is aboard these trucks but the gates into the crisis stricken country have been sealed on the other side venezuela's military still largely loyal to president maduro has been ordered to prevent any shipments crossing the border next to the soldiers anxious citizens wait and hope for food and medical supplies to be let through yet the point that sooner or later that righteous going to open and the humanitarian aid will arrive the people affinis we let tired of being hungry. and my mother died nearly two weeks ago the doctors were unable to operate on her we had to find all of the medical supplies and equipment ourselves even in barrio it's impossible
6:07 pm
there's not enough money to bury the dead and anybody that let hundreds of kilometers away in the capital kara counts president maduro denies there are any humanitarian problems at all going even further he said the american aid shipments were a ploy for an invasion. through a little because of our immense oil resources minerals and other great wealth the critics are pushing an international coalition led by the imperialist government of the united states that sold that they can militarily it's hot in venezuela under the false excuse of a humanitarian crisis that does not exist. but international pressure is mounting meeting in europe why ministers from more than a dozen european and latin american countries are calling on madeira to hold free presidential elections and allow humanitarian aid into venezuela. this is what
6:08 pm
that aid looks like on the colombian side of the border bridge these venezuelan refugees or rely. on a community kitchen to get them through the day. i'd like to welcome now mr neil's on he is germany's foreign minister states are very warm welcome and thank you for taking our time of your busy schedule to be with her with us here in person now there is melting global pressure on mr murderer to step down germany's long that some of the leading nations in the world to call for him to leave basically and have put their weight behind the opposition leader one though why it seems like such a big gamble by doe six months ago nobody knew his name he's not democratically elected should you first look underneath the hood or look mr democratically elected and the things that disappoint you she represents the democratically elected national assembly and that election to that body has been democratically and has been
6:09 pm
transparent and fair and real coup has been taking place long before one minister mr maduro decided to virtually take all the powers screwballs the polls from that body and implemented own body which was not democratically elected and then initiate a presidential elections which were not under international observation which are quite frankly oil letting all standards of international law and the electoral law so we are recognizing the choice of the venezuelan people and the very constitution of gifts that body the responsibility in case that the president is not longer able or justifiably in this or in his office to assume the responsibility so i think what is needed right now is a real and concrete step in order to make sure that this country goes back to normal that the situation which is devastating in terms of the humanitarian
6:10 pm
situation is going to be addressed and that we have free and fair presidential election and that is something that mr ahmed. must accept and i think that is really the point here let's talk about this meeting and that took place in in europe where it was a major meeting of this so-called international contact group germany was one of them if i understand correctly basically testing the waters for a democratic transition in venezuela but the us interesting lee was not part of this contact group so i'm just wondering how effective can this group be well look we have we are trying to make a contribution as european countries and we are looking at when israel has a very important player in the region it's a rich country it's a big country and it has an impact on regional stability and we enjoy experience the political impact of taking more than been hundreds of thousands of refugees also in this country and missed them a duras way to run bankrupt the country has produced more than three million
6:11 pm
refugees so we made it clear that we are ready to support the democratically elected national simply and that we are ready to support the people of an israel or by delivering humanitarian aid and we want to achieve this by peaceful means so there's an offer on the table also to mr must draw in tests his team to talk about some concrete steps to that necessary presidential election and of course it's not only the united states of america i think this is very important to make this point the over vermin majority of letting american states group and other countries in the region are calling on mr moderate to agree to this path and we are stupid countries also the german government firmly stands behind mr why don't the democratic represented will of the venezuelan people and we are ready to work with the international community and especially the latin american countries let's not
6:12 pm
worry about that let's talk now about roughly forty seconds left so let's talk about the power while the power structure doing. names on the presidency of venezuela continue to the people of venezuela are suffering i'm wondering whether the only the only factor that can help them get mature or to leave office are the venezuelan people themselves well i agree and i think if we look at suffering families kids especially affected the first thing and that's what we're trying to do when to work with the venezuelan people is to make sure that humanitarian aid reaches the people that are most affected and political gambling off mr mugg world blocking z x those roles for example just shows the character of this regime this is simply unacceptable and they're really hope and i want to use that opportunity to appeal to mr madeira and to us and to rush to at least open the country for humanitarian help and exercise things that is what we need desperately is needed
6:13 pm
now is on germany's foreign minister of state thank you thank you. want to tell you now about some of the other stories making news around the world. in thailand prince says google rocks has been criticized by her brother the king after announcing she'll run for prime minister in upcoming elections in march the princess said she would campaign for a party a loyal to the country's ousted former prime minister but the king says the move is inappropriate and unconstitutional. amazon boss jeff bezos the richest man in the world has accused the publisher of an american tabloid newspaper of blackmail he alleges that the national enquirer threatened to publish intimate photos of him and his lover if you did not do as it wished and a long running political dispute. british prime minister theresa may will hold talks with her irish counterpart leo varadkar in dublin later may is seeking

changes to the so-called backstop a plan to avoid a return to a hard border in ireland while the backstop is the main sticking point in the present negotiations. with italy has begun removing a large section of a motorway bridge that collapsed last year the operation in the northern city of genoa is expected to take some eight hours the crossing partially collapsed back in august during high winds forty three people were killed and dozens injured. kevin chiles uncle america has confirmed reports that berlin has reached a compromise with paris over the north stream two pipeline friends have raised objections about the pipeline which will supply russian gas directly to germany it had threatened to use european union regulations to halt construction but chancellor merkel says that stumbling block has now been removed is this enough to doesn't see if we have indeed reached an agreement regarding the gas pipeline
6:15 pm
regulations and we reached it because germany and france work together very closely and with the remaining e.u. presidency and the other member states of course. you know how often i meet president mark or how often we hold talks we cooperate daily on all important european topics and even if the president said a few days ago that he wouldn't be going to munich there will be many other meetings between us where you will be able to see that the spirit of franco german friendship is very much alive obviously the chancellor speaking there earlier well the barber of as well joins me now from brussels so good evening barbara why that france have a change of heart. now usually later decisions like that are in mix have a mix of reasons behind them there might be a certain amount of tit for tat involved because just a while ago for instance germany didn't support france when they came up with the proposal to introduce a digital tax in europe and do this rather quickly and the german finance minister
6:16 pm
sort of left this drop like a hot potato so yes they have some grievances and then on the other hand we have to consider that the things like this are sort of ruled are regarded as a matter of national interest or not this is in germany's national interest north stream too but not in france or so when no france sets priorities and i think for instance they had to make a gesture in the european sense and the spirit towards the eastern european countries they would then finally do so so it might just be a mix of different feelings and ideas that the time was right to sort of show ball and that it wouldn't always get its way now what was the point of this meeting at all i mean or trying to was already under construction. i mean the new new regulation for gas in the european union that has been on the table for years now
6:17 pm
in north stream projects like that are just long running you were talking about many years and also reforms in the european union take you is so they can run parallel more or less and the e.u. has for years tried to gain more control over the e.u. the european energy policy to sort of get into the driving seat to sort of make the rules and control things on both ends not only the livery but also like on the receiving side with in the e.u. and that didn't work out germany sort of regained leadership in negotiations with russia on north stream to advance the attempt was there and the two things more or less to run just their their course without really touching over the negotiation time i wonder barbara did germany misjudge the situation or underestimate the amount of opposition there is to this gas pipeline. it's certain that might be true to a certain extent but also no you have to consider that of course the atmosphere and
6:18 pm
the whole political situation towards russia and with russia changed dramatically ten years ago you know the idea was russia could be our partner we should engage we should deal with them today many regard russia more as an adversary particularly after the russian intervention in ukraine and what happened after that and looking at for instance the interference in european or the us election and so on so today russia is looked at with a lot of skepticism and distrust and the atmosphere politically is not right for such big deals between one european country and moscow on the other side so that has changed and maybe berlin secretly and particularly the german chancellor is really that this is somehow sort of slowed down now and gets a bit more you opinion control and they're not really so much in the forefront of being best friends with president putin of
6:19 pm
a vessel reporting from brussels thank you. well saying with franco german relations well the spite that compromise that barbara was reporting on over the north stream pipeline question marks remain over how well europe's dynamic duo are found right now in a surprise move french president and many on my car has pulled out of a meeting with the american at the forthcoming munich security conference we asked the organizer wolfgang ischinger what he made of the no show even if president michel isn't going to speak himself in munich we will have plenty of other senior representatives of the french government in munich to explain french positions. there will be a huge american delegation congressional delegation there will be a half a dozen german ministers said red cetera so i think the purpose which i which is important to me the purpose to demonstrate in munich that the european union is
6:20 pm
alive and kicking that purpose can still be maintained not. in times where it may appear that the european project is faltering should have made a strong plea for european unity for me it's very important that we demonstrate is specially to the anglo-saxon community that. the impression that may be created elsewhere that because of brecht's it the european integration project is about to crumble that that's wrong actually popular support for the european union in most countries is up not down. and beyond europe with the recent standoff between the us and russia over the i n f missile treaty issue warned of a new politics of rivalry. we have enough in common between even russia and the united states to try to work together to
6:21 pm
put cooperation to put integration. above the kind of rivalry which seems to be the motto of twenty nine and we will need to talk about that next week and in munich we'll have some pretty tough hard talk i hope in order to clarify what the priorities of responsible leadership need to be twenty nineteen now it's time to talk movies again the berlin olive bronze air national film festival is well underway four hundred films are currently being screened over the next ten days and our reporters are down at the red carpet show itself until and day vet leavitt's hi there guys what's happening behind you. you have joined us an absolutely fantastic time just behind us is the print media one of the films that we are seeing today is the film directed by ponce what is all

6:23 pm
that's quite a harrowing film it tells the story of young boys who is sixty eight by a priest in the catholic church in front of it it details the story of the group these days boys who is idols came together to exist by those allegations tell their stories in the break the silence of the catholic church of all as well now what's really important tonight about this film is that the group that group of men did exist they did come forward with a number of allegations that there are actually cool cases going on as you confront at the moment in relation to the priest in the cardinal depicted and it's done so they school case is still ongoing and the film was clear to point out at the end that the men involved are innocent and who until proven guilty but of course that's cool some legal issues for the makers of this film but actually the movie is supposed to be released this month in france but there's legal action to try to stop that including by the lawyer of the priest who is named in the film who figures largely in this film which now we can't tell you too too much about it
6:24 pm
because it is a world premiere so actually we have to wait until the movies are underway before we can give you our review i will say that was all who was at the press conference for this movie he said that he hopes this movie will change society she says that it's absolutely true that there's nothing in this film that he made including the confession of the priest whose names who's going to trial in france currently and what was released what really struck me about this film is that it shows many different reactions of survivors of sexual assault and it shows how it's affected their lives in very different ways and it gives a real cross-section of french society as well you know just another quick note on plus was on the director of that film he is a big thinker here on the ballot although he was actually a member of the jury not say the only guys who are expecting a really warm welcome from the crowd just behind us when he takes that i caught her eye now earlier you guys also watched and saw the germans first movie featuring
6:25 pm
there at the festival what can you tell us about that. but it's called system crasher this is a translation from a german term steamship lang which means children who don't fit into the system particularly this film is about a i emotionally disturbed nine year old girl we found this movie but we agree pages on it we both of us are right and we're actually going to have a closer look for that coming up on studio b. use arts and culture so stay tuned to do you go to for more on that. hour and our very own child a child some pill and david leavitt's at their bella nala red carpet where there is a lot of action going on in the and the backdrop catch up with you soon guys thank you for now. now a sadly british actor and five time oscar nominee albert finney has died at the age of eighty two his career spanned five decades but he was best known for his nine hundred sixty three starring role in the film tom jones in his later career he
