a huge riot police brutality almost two thousand demonstrators some of them seriously since the wave of protests began french police say they're just protecting themselves. and the latest from day two of the international film festival. by the grace of god french film sexual abuse by catholic priests is a fictionalized account of a real life story i'm just in the running for the gold of the. welcome to the program at least ten people have died in a fire. flamengo in brazil the blaze broke out before dawn on friday at a training facility official say some of the victims were teenagers from the youth team was sleeping at the center in the center at the time. friends and family of

those killed or injured are in shark some of them are glad to find their relatives alive while others wait anxiously for news outside the training ground of the flamingo soccer club. the blaze broke out just before dawn and this accommodation block firefighters were called in just after five am local time but for at least ten people help came too late. obviously we're all devastated. this is certainly the biggest tragedy this club has seen in the past one hundred twenty three years at the beach three. flamengo is one of brazil's biggest and best known clubs internationally its most prominent former players include. as well as eighteen year old vinicius junior who played for flamengo before joining spain's ryall madrid last year. he tweeted just remembering the nights and days i spent at the training ground sends shivers down my spine i still can't believe it i pray for
8:03 pm
all of them may god bless each of the families. the cost of the blaze is being investigated but according to local media the fire started in the air conditioning system in one of the rooms. whatever the cost it brought a sudden end to the victim's dreams of becoming professional footballers. as friends sports journalist time to. welcome her what more do we know at this stage. appears that eight of the dead of the ten dead where young players we haven't had that officially confirmed by the club yet but look when you support see eight of them were teenagers only aged between the ages of fourteen and sixteen and the three players who were injured were also age fourteen fifteen one of them is in serious condition in hospital right now. in this training center one of facilities
8:04 pm
like why would people sleeping that well that's one of the big questions we're trying to get to the bottom of no it's very common for big clubs like flamenco to have training centers where young kids fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen become there they spend their time in the at the training center on this and they live there because they often come from from all over brazil some of them only there for a few days to come on i understand these centers and a couple of talk of them what we see today we saw a couple of hours ago which real was the mayor's office they said that the. did not have permission to build a competition on the site where the competition actually was and when important they said that e.t.a. in french because that's like car park so with that should not be any building there so that's one thing that we're going to have to look into you know a little bit farther explain what the real story behind that is this is a facility that had only recently undergone
8:05 pm
a multi-million dollar upgrade. that's right as i said all these clubs across brazil the how they know how state of the art center is that have your football pitch you small studio must be your therapy units gymnasiums all that kind of thing and flamingo is one of the biggest clubs in brazil they recently spent twenty three million reality which is about almost five million pounds in the u.k. money they spent this money to to expire and then to refurbish the area it seems that this c.d.o. where the fire took place was in one of all those parts of the of the facility and was it was going to be knocked out it was going to be was going to be raised to the ground and so wasn't it wasn't part of this new this new modern area that had been built well we'll leave it there thank you for joining us andrew downie in sao paolo thank you. i'm a zone boss jeff bezos has accused the national enquirer newspaper of blackmailing him he says the u.s. scandal she threatened to publish intimate photos of him unless he did as he was
8:06 pm
told the inquirer says it will investigate these claims but there are also political overtones mr bezos also the washington post which has published many investigative reports on the president donald trump the national enquirer zona meanwhile is a fervent trump supporter to prove a tabloid scandal or a politically motivated attack jeff bezos has accused to publish a link to president donald trump of blackmail and a post published on the web site media. last month after the amazon c.e.o. and his wife announced that divorce the national enquirer published intimate messages revealing an extramarital affair eager to know how the paper came to possess these messages hired private investigators he suspected it was driven by dirty politics his suspicions grew stronger when he says the national enquirer parent company am i threatened to publish lewd photos of him if you didn't make
8:07 pm
a public statement saying its previous coverage of him was not politically motivated. well that got my attention but not in the way the likely any passionate. could cause me takes a backseat because there's a much more important matter involved here and from my position i can't stand up to this kind of extortion how many people can. just his ownership of the washington post has made him the enemy of powerful people including the saudis and the us president trump relies on favorable coverage from am i even admitted to withholding damaging information about trump to help him win the twenty sixteen election. it's boss david peca is a close associate of trump. am i says it has acted lawfully in

its reporting on bezos but if investigations find otherwise the media company could be in trouble. let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world princess has been criticised by have brother the king after announcing that she will run for prime minister in much of the elections the princess who became a comma after marrying an american said she would campaign for r.t. loyal to the country's ousted former prime minister says her movies inappropriate and unconstitutional. and of thousands of livestock of thought to have died in heavy rains in northern australia the rains are swamped and large parts of the outback in the state of queensland authorities are planning to drop the fodder to stranded cattle. at least begun to remove a large section of motorway bridge that collapsed last year the operation in the northern city of genoa is expected to take about eight hours the crossing the partially collapsed in august during high winds forty three people were killed and

dozens injured. british prime minister to resign may is meeting her irish counterpart me over at care in dublin which is made seeking changes to the so-called a backstop a plan to afford to return to a hard border between god for public and northern ireland it's been the main sticking point in the kosi asians. of the european union has backed a compromise between germany and france of the nordstrom to pipeline the deal will see berlin continue as the main negotiator with the russian with russia over the gas pipeline of france had threatened to hold construction of the project which critics say a could undermine your appeal in security. ships like these have already laid six hundred kilometers of the north stream to gas pipeline a mammoth task and one that's caused consternation at both ends of the line germany's betting on the projects to secure its future energy supplies. this is what it will eventually look like the pipeline will follow the route of an existing
8:10 pm
line between russia and germany via the baltic sea it will be controlled by russian state energy firm gas from and it's that level of russian control over a key european supply that's made some of germany's allies uneasy france surprised and disappointed bell in on thursday by signaling it would back tighter e.u. regulation of the project putting its future risk wrangling in brussels appears to frustrate to the kremlin. for sure but the question there's no unanimity of opinion on nord stream two in the european union at the moment. which we hope that the nation members of the european union was sort this issue out for themselves. we still believe that this project is beneficial to both the european gas consumers interests and also to the russian federation as the gas supplier of. the group particularly. despite france's reservations paris and berlin today reached
8:11 pm
a compromise that was quickly backed by the european parliament responsibility for enforcing the rules on such projects will fall to the first e.u. member state where a pipeline connects in this case that's germany. i despite that come from mars questions remain over how well the europe's dynamic do you have off airing in a surprise move french president emanuel macro has pulled out of a meeting with i'm going to back out of the forthcoming munich security conference we are still going to wolf and what's he what he might of the president's absence even if president marco isn't going to speak himself in munich we will have plenty of other senior representatives of the french government in munich to explain french positions. there will be a huge american delegation congressional delegation there will be a half a dozen german ministers etc etc so i think the purpose which i which is important to me the purpose to demonstrate in munich that the european union is alive and
8:12 pm
kicking that purpose can still be maintained not. in times where it may appear that the european project is faltering fishing i made a strong plea for european unity for me it's very important that we demonstrate is specially to the anglo-saxon community that. the impression that may be created elsewhere that because of breck's it the european integration project is about to crumble that that's wrong actually popular support for the european union in most countries is up not down. and beyond europe with the recent standoff between the us and russia if the i.m.f. missile treaty issue warned of a new politics of rivalry. we have enough in
8:13 pm
common between even russia and the united states to try to work together to put cooperation to put integration. above the kind of rivalry which seems to be the motto of twenty ninety and we will need to talk about that next week and in munich we'll have some pretty tough hard talk i hope in order to clarify what the priorities of responsible leadership need to be in twenty nineteen. i was a lack of digital learning in germany holding students back german schools of being behind when you compare their digital educational equipment to that of other european countries according to the latest worldwide test on student performance call the call the p.s.a. germany still ranks within the top twenty globally of the country's federal government wants to spend more money on topics of high speed wife eye for schools
8:14 pm
the local government taking issue with a plan if you know which welcomed by students. now the on my own moderates what's known as digital natives but they spend most of their time in a rather analog environment their school and the violence connection is spotty and the computer room and that exactly the most modern three student reps think this has to change and. got to be possible for each school room to have digital media we need computers that are capable of uploading graphics and complicated darter right of course we need teachers who know how to use these computers. commanded us but didn't come german schools like badly behind when compared to international equivalents that was supposed to have changed. the german government wants to spend an extra five billion euros on digital technology in schools but the
8:15 pm
sixteen individual states don't want any interference in school policy so while federal and local governments debate the issues the students must wait for their technology to be upgraded to school lessons the traditional way this school needs more than just new equipment before digital media can become a proper subject. when we are most concerned about is that there isn't enough staff available that is capable of using digital media time you know and that means of course more than short term help we need new long term staff positions. to be created we need someone in charge of tech support on the staff. up until now there were a few teachers who could take things into their own hands the eighth grade math class has just begun using tablets once in a while it's a pilot project the students are creating their own digital math book but every day school lessons don't include this kind of project yet. we don't do this kind of
8:16 pm
thing enough we should have projects like this in other subjects as well. we don't use digital media enough especially considering that we all have cell phones they could also be used in class we don't need books everything is available on an i pad but with only thirty i pads for more than six hundred students that won't be happening any time soon until more funding is made available for tech it's back to the blackboard and germany's old school education system. france is seen weekly clashes between yellow vests protesters and police for three months now both nineteen hundred demonstrators have been injured some of them seriously protesters accuse the police of using disproportionate force the government says officers are only protecting themselves doubly is a nice nurse has been has more from paris. this is about the only view that vitale gets of the outside world these days she's too weak to walk more than a few meters and has been suffering from almost constant headaches and heavy nose

bleeding since the fifth of january that was the day that she was hit by a rubber bullet that fractured her cheek bone in three places. we were running down a side street as thirty riot police were chasing us banging their shields with their batons it was really scary suddenly another group of police blocked our way and started shooting rubber bullet at us. i was hit on the cheek and fell to the ground. then one of those grenades with rubber bullets and tear gas exploded next to me. i mean i couldn't hear any more i completely lost my bearings and just sat there. as says someone helped her to get out of the crowd but what she saw that day keeps her up at night the mere sight of policeman now gives her panic attacks. when i turned around i saw police protesters with their batons they didn't ask

questions they just beat everyone it reminded me a very dark periods of our history so they seemed crazed it was frightening and it was unrestrained violence. says that if. you need she's not the only demonstrator to have suffered life changing injuries more than one thousand nine hundred protesters have been voted since the demonstrations began three months ago some people have lost eyes a hands others have been left with mutilated faces or limbs. human rights groups say the police have been getting more violent the use of rubber bullets and so-called sting bore grenades that contain t.n.t. high explosive and deliver a deafening explosion of small rubber balls is making the situation worse. he's on the o.c. ski french police could very easily keep protesters under control with water cannons and tear gas no one should be enough but it is for british germans and
8:19 pm
italian police they have to deal with an extremely violent demonstration that the sun seems to take for granted that people will suffer irreversible injuries inflicted by these this book few know. if you've seen it but the police say they need the devices to defend themselves and that one thousand two hundred officers have also been injured in the protests about them over their ear and we never use our battens without reason and only in accordance with our regulations for example if someone is resisting arrest we need rubber bullets to keep protesters at basically going without them there would be even more injured protester also more violent infiltrated by extremists. and there is no well trained security that union demonstrations are going to keep such protesters under control at all nor do they view or i phone look weak. we tell you our rejects these

arguments she will sue the french state for damages. it's important for me to take this to the european court of justice i want people to know what happened to us and how many of us have been injured. maybe the court will order french police to be less violent. even if she wins the case italia has lost faith in the country once she feels better she's planning on leaving france and the violence she has experienced. in the body recovered from the wreckage of a plane in the english channel has been confirmed to be that of football i mean. the twenty eight year old arjun time was on his way to join cardiff city when contact with his flight was lost and his family's worst fears have been confirmed. after nearly three weeks of pain and uncertainty the search for a million or so law is finally over british police identified the body recovered

from the wreckage of a plane off the islands of jhansi as a law. the twenty eight year old argentine had been missing since january twenty first when his plane disappeared in route from france to wales shortly after he had left his father a voice message saying he was so scared that they were about to crash the plane now confirmed to be that of salon pilot david if it was discovered in the english channel earlier in the week had been since body is yet to be found. so i was headed to wales to join new club cardiff city after they broke their club record signing him from both clubs that paid tribute to the striker and argentina's president mockery offered his condolences via twitter to slots family after the confirmation . but discovery provides closure for salon's family who say they can now more but they must now wait until an interim police report scheduled for february twenty first for answers on why the crash occurred. then two movies on the

bell in ali butlins international film festival is well underway four hundred films will be screened over the next ten days and they don't use a shot at chelsea and david leavitt's on the red carpet. they welcome both what is happening. that. hey though yes it is while underway we've had three wild premieres today those seventeen films competing for the baton on its top prize fail seven of those seventeen odd directed by women that is a huge deal here at the ballot no this year that is way more than can that is way more than that it's been a really big issue at the festival this year and they've been huge crowds coming out of the films that we've seen safe out today that's right actually the mood was pretty we have to say pretty down after yesterday the opening day the first film in the belly sort of crashed and burned so there was a lot of pressure on this festival to turn things around today and i have to say
8:23 pm
after the movies we saw the premiere today to really strong european dramas i think it has i think that the competition is finally starting to heat up dolly's no surprise that the belting out is noted for the miserable films that it and shows tell us about is this controversial by the grace of god which has its world premiere tonight. yes he is slightly difficult film so this really was a prime example of that this film was about young boys who were sexually abused by a priest over decades in france the film details a group of those boys who are adults then shy and seek justice and try and break the silence of the catholic church now what's really interesting to point out about this film is that that repaginate did exist in front of a group of young men did chinese space allegations of sexual assault they say that they and you now the two that the priest and the cardinal depicted in the film have
8:24 pm
both gone on trial legal proceedings are taking place in france at the moment that it's had not yet come through the cases of have just got under way really say the film to make clear that the people that they're depicting are innocent until proven guilty nevertheless i think it is still cause a lot of legal issues for the director of the film fraternity phones close oh you may know him from movies such as eight women swimming pool he's one of france's top directors his movie is supposed to be out later this month in france by the grace of god and there's legal action to stop it including by the lawyer of the priest who is at the center of this film who allegedly molested dozens of boys over decades and this was really this was quite a gut wrenching drama we were both at the edge of our seats right it was a bit of a ha and watch it times he really did not shy away from tackling this issue head on right from the beginning you really brought into the issue and really good engaged
8:25 pm
in in just how how wrong it was for the boys that he's depicting and it's also really fascinating to see how differently they handle it you have. one of the central characters who at the beginning comes forward and he comes forward to the church he wants to try to deal with this within the church he's very religious catholic himself and he quickly sees that that's not going to work out that the church is not going to really address these issues and it really snowballs and other victims come forward. and form this group. which which really is a cross-section of french society and its people who have really filled dealt with their abuse in completely different ways to ok so that's by the grace of god and less than forty seconds tell us what else is happening today. that's quite a difficult ok so the first german film of the festival system crusher also hard
8:26 pm
topic it's about an emotionally disturbed violent young girl if you want to know more about that what's arts and culture coming up on d w as well say the fast to chinese films in competition that is going to have its well premie ad today a lot of people are very excited about that as well i challenge such else until they could have it so well done you brought in on time. british five time oscar nominee albert finney has died at the age of eighty two his career spanned five decades but it was best known for his nine hundred sixty three starring role in the film tom jones in his later career here he had a big budget action films including the james bond three of us skyfall. to chill up to date old or environmental news is coming up but next to africa's a stage about i'll be back at the top of the aisle don't forget you can get so old new stock around the clock on our website at www dot com could.
