a second term the president is scheduled to address the crowd this afternoon and next saturday the country will also vote for a new parliament. w correspondent adrienne critias at that election campaign event in lagos and joins us now for the latest so adrienne tell us what's going on where you are. well i mean you can see the little bit of the back right hopefully in fairy loud here it's very on here to thousands of people who came to see president obama who are you from the party a.p.c. you came here for one of his last rally just before the elections next saturday and lagos is of course a very important it's a crucial state it's the biggest city in the country and more than five million voters are registered here alone. all right so along with the incumbent who else is running what can tell us about the candidates and their supporters.
1:06 pm
so there's more than seventy presidential candidates who are running for the for the seats but actually it's only two people who have a chance and a neck and neck race is expected which we one hundred the president and i had to do i will back up from the party p.d.p. you so well mike why are you he's trying to tell people that he has to continue the good work that he's claims he has been doing so far especially in fighting corruption that is one of his lecture topics but i suggest we bring in one of his supporters right now we're here with me mistah you this voting for a.b.c. that's what he told me before i go why you say why have you decided to vote for the president you guys i'm so excited to do what a new what do you think coming. president which is going to be. because nobody who had been the president had done that was in the love changes yeah develop. a structure in everything yeah i don't so much and do with much more food . for thought for everybody that i think clearly you know caught my eye was about
1:07 pm
the bully thank you very much i used to you can you are you is of course a diehard support off president mamadou power but honestly speaking in lagos you also find a lot of his critics the especially in lagos because many here are saying that in terms of the economy and the progress that was made was not good enough nigeria's been going through economic crisis in the past years and many people here are complaining about the hardship they are complaining that nothing really has changed and that is why a lot of people will probably also vote for the opposition candidate for i think well bill baka he was the vice president before then he later was also a very successful businessman so many people you know if he would be elected then the economy would also improve you give us a sense of just how democratic these elections are going to be this time. i'm sorry i didn't hear your question we want to hear about how democratic these elections. going to be. well this is of course
1:08 pm
a big concern for observers certainly it is a big care debate whether they will be fully democratic or not we have seen in the last elections here we had a peaceful transition of power which was to many a big surprise but definitely a very good sign so i think there's hope for optimism that we can really see a democratic election here all right i did have a correspondent adrienne krishna in lagos thank you so much. now a u.s. envoy for north korea has expressed confidence that real progress can be made at a summit later this month between donald trump and kim jong un but the special envoy stephen begun also cautioned there was still work to be done ahead of the talks trungpa said the second meeting between the two leaders will be held in the vietnamese capital hanoi. it's the seventy first anniversary of the korean people's army and something to celebrate for north korea's leader kim jong un while the u.s. was buzzing with anticipation about the forthcoming summit he was saying nothing
1:09 pm
which was you know in june unsure what you wanted them to do or in washington president trump was convinced the great times lay ahead for north korea if the summit is a success it will become a great economic powerhouse he tweeted it will become a different kind of rockets an economic one. tribe believes there are grounds for optimism returning from pyongyang is envoy doing the groundwork for the summit met south korea's foreign minister and said talks with the north had been productive but he added a note of caution. the president is very much looking forward to taking the next steps we have some hard work to do with the d.p. r. k. to tweet now and then and i'm confident that if both sides stay committed we can make real progress or is. he going to stall to have discussed specifically just all movement steps that north korea could promise of the vietnam summit and what corresponding measures the united states would be willing to take that would be an

advance on the first summit where kim jong un pledged to work towards the complete denuclearize ation of the korean peninsula but did not provide a clear timetable. for more let's bring in a correspondent stephen burrow a quick joins us now from the south korean capital seoul so stephen we just heard from the u.s. special envoy he sounds optimistic but just how much progress was really made in those preparatory talks the talk to accomplish their main goal in that they set the stage for this second u.s. military summit to go ahead so you have confirmation that it will take place in a location and presumably they were able to work out its all of the kind of diplomatic minute the rank of the officials involved in iraq engender the skies how long the meetings will go ahead for it was possible that at this stage things could have hit a snag involving might have been called off that apparently didn't happen but now
1:11 pm
the real work of negotiation has to begin. all right so stephen just what are the issues that still need to be resolved between the north and the u.s. what are the sticking points. there is still a long way to go and for all the talk we've heard over the past several months about how things aren't quite good between the two sides they still haven't addressed the big questions which are north korea still has just as many of their weapons as they did before all of this started and they still haven't provided a roadmap or timetable as to how they will get rid of the earth craze of course not going to just do this for no reason they're going to put these their nuclear program ahead as a kind of bargaining chip and they hope to get from the us what they've been calling corresponding measures which basically means that they want to be relieved of the you trade international media and it's north korea wants to develop their economy and it remains to be seeing whether or not the few sides will be able to
1:12 pm
come to some kind of agreement where north korea will commit to nuclear station in some kind of binding way and the u.s. will do something to make that work there while well as far as these upcoming talks are concerned we've heard a lot from the u.s. from president trump himself also from the special envoy but what about north korea what has it been saying about these talks and the summit they remain pretty quiet it's you know they haven't come out and said much about it which is not entirely unusual for korea you know they don't have. the twenty four hour news cycle with the free press as we in the west needs to do it's kind of normal for them to really bide their time and pick and choose the right moments to notice these types of things when they decide that it has real propaganda value a lot of times they don't announce anything until after it's actually happened because only after something has happened and they designed if this is something that they think paints them in a lighter not so they'll say something of actually because their leader is going to

china and vietnam but they're probably waiting for the right moment and waiting for the time that they feel like they can spin this to their best advantage. all right stephen barwick reporting from south korean capital seoul thank you. well one of the world's most iconic aircraft is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its maiden flight the boeing seven forty seven nicknamed the jumbo jet took off for the first time on february ninth one thousand nine hundred sixty nine in the us state of washington it was the first wide body plane to be built and it held the record for carrying the most passengers until the twenty first century seven forty seven series was originally to be phased out after four hundred planes were sold half a century later more than fifteen hundred have taken to the skies. let's get a reminder now of the top story we're following for you. venezuela's opposition leader
