of chemists in august twenty eighth. it was just one of more than sixteen hundred anti semitic crimes committed in germany last year that's an increase of ten percent on twenty seventeen particularly worrying the number of violent incidents like this one in berlin has increased by two thirds if. i am concerned but not really surprised it fits with what i hear from jewish organizations and representatives when i talk to them but. it should give us the impetus to take preventative action soon and to make sure that anti semitism does not arise in the first place. that much of this hatred comes from far right supporters but experts say some of it derives from opposition to israel including from migrants from the muslim world and germany is not alone anti semitic incidents are becoming more common in other countries too france this

week reported a rise of more than seventy percent in twenty eighteen compared with the previous year. unfortunately anti-semitism is on the advance everywhere in europe we need to find european solution is i support the idea of making the fight against anti-semitism a priority for the german e.u. presidency next year. another part of the picture in germany is that the jewish community is growing and demonstrations of solidarity with them by non jews are common while most germans recognize that from the holocaust comes a special responsibility to protect jews there is sadly still a minority ready to turn violent aggression against them. and staying in germany police have arrested two syrian citizens thought to be former members of the syrian regime's secret police federal prosecutors here say that they are suspected of having committed crimes against humanity including torturing prisoners at

. the german justice minister of the social democrats culture in a body has welcomed the arrest saying that of course crimes against humanity can and should indeed be prosecuted here in germany that is before when the only comment all other spokesperson have referred to the chief federal prosecutors currently investigating the matter but we also heard from independent observers who've been saying it's no surprise that such a arrests are taking place in germany now because we've had an influx of refugees coming from syria to germany and of course there's also people who have been allegedly pods of the syrian regime who could come to germany as well and one of the commentators has been a kassam from the european center for constitutional and human rights who's been commenting on that today let's have a listen it was for us always a question of time. that someone is dented fight and and will be. accused and to run arrested and most probably indicted

and put on trial in germany or in the other european countries any of those trials allow. all of us to to point to what has happened and is happening in syria and that's the important thing i mean. it seems that assad and his people have won the war and that they want peace and it's to victory speeches and what we claim is that they cannot be any kind of peace without justice. well this is quite interesting because the efforts that have been taking place towards the arrests that was taking place yesterday have been done by both german and french authorities and there have been in the past and with this arrest they will certainly come forward again claims or or quests that the international community will prosecute the assad regime for crimes against humanity even former members of

the international criminal court have been asking the security international the united nations security council to prosecute these crimes and with germany being currently nonpermanent member of the security council in the united nations and taking the lead in april it be interesting to see how germany will be reacting on this arrest further on the international scene maximillian akasha thank you. let's get a quick check now of some other stories making news around the world according to iranian media at least twenty members of the country's revolutionary guard have been killed in a suicide attack in southeastern iran the suicide bomber reportedly struck a bus carrying the elite troops on the road between the cities don and cottage insist on baluchistan province. the head of the philippines news site critical of the country's president has been arrested maria reza says that the accusation of cyber libel against her is the latest attempt by bradley go to tear to his

corruption cold fresh elections as you say he's expected to the days and to come in the b.b.c. speculation currently suggests that this will be held in the us in april suggesting it will be dissolved in. now the prime minister i mean if we just look at the back story here he faced a lot of criticism over have his efforts to establish a dialogue with these cattle and separatists why have they now turned against him. well a sticking point for this government house with several previous governments the request to hold a referendum on independence ice you say this would require constitutional amendments would require a two thirds majority in parliament and that's it is all of them to go freshen lections bones of the current circumstances that's of course we will consider it and since it is also it would set a precedence a very uncomfortable one for other parts of spain and indeed other regions around

europe which were essential. in part this would be very keen to force a man that political uncertainty what is the opposition saying how is it positioning itself right now well the three main opposition parties that the rights of such as governments are actually rather happy because on sunday they jointly held a rally attended by fifty thousand people here in times have a trade calling on centuries to resign and call the pressure actions within minutes of the. leader of the main opposition party was already appeared to voters who had left his party. conservative people's policies the new policies to come back to him and he also used the opportunity accuse senses of being empty patriotic so basically the election campaigns already have the voice of take us through that election campaign and the possible results i mean who stands to gain the most hair and what could the next government potentially look like. well what we look like

but first the nato defense ministers are meeting in brussels to discuss steps needed to protect europe if a u.s. russian nuclear disarmament pack falls apart nato secretary general again urged russia to return to compliance with the i.n.f. treaty it said that the alliance was making plans for a scenario without the deal which bans the development and possession of intermediate range nuclear missiles the pact is under threat after washington announced its withdrawal earlier this month accusing russia of violating it and teri schultz following the nato meeting in brussels sent us this analysis. nato allies met for the first time since the us announced it would withdraw from the i.m.f. treaty if moscow doesn't agree to destroy the missile system that breaches the treaties limits all twenty eight other allies have come to back the u.s. on this because they agree that a one sided treaty is not effective arms control it doesn't mean it doesn't make

them nervous because of course any future battleground between the u.s. and russia would be european territory u.s. acting defense secretary patrick shanahan sought to reassure nato counterparts by saying the u.s. has no plans to deploy nuclear weapons in europe at the same time nobody knows exactly what the u.s. plans will look like because washington says it's been abiding by the treaty and so it hasn't further developed its thinking on this germany is one of the countries most uncomfortable with any talk of nuclear weapons and defense minister ursula vanderlei and was asked if she could rule out this possibility she said it's too early to do that she said it's also too early to speculate on what any future arms control or defense systems would look like until we're truly in a post i n f world and that won't happen until august at the very earliest germany may have benefited from all the focus on i.m.f. because dinner was to focus on defense spending and of course germany's is quite a bit below where nato would like its allies to be and germany is interior minister says that he wants to change legislation to tighten restrictions on foreign

telecoms providers horsed as a whole first proposals would require companies to obtain security certification in germany and to sign no spying over a month's berlin is considering the changes as its sides whether to allow china sua way to take part in the development of its five g. network the telecoms equipment manufacturer is accused of being too close to the chinese government and the military. connecting the world at high speed it's all in five g. and chinese companies are dominating the market for the latest telecom technologies two of them and competitor who are way banned in the u.s. but still hopeful to get into the e.u. market. which is an idea the release of our five g. products is just waiting for telecom carriers to announce their commercial network and verification standards for their terminals of the with you that have neither of

which will. but it's become difficult for hallway to sell goods these days the company's close relationship to the chinese government and military has brought up accusations of spying china strongly denies these accusations. in the interest and neither the united states nor any of its allies have brought up any solid evidence that can prove poses a threat to their national security their reasons nothing more than the issue of china's national intelligence long course or. indeed there is no proof but governments have become cautious germany is discussing tightening telecommunication laws and making huawei sign a nose by agreement poland is on the fence and under direct pressure from the u.s. to ban huawei to. we've also made clear that there is a certain set of decisions that it will be more difficult for the united states and for the first side of the pump ailment the same threat in hungary and slovakia it

could block walk away from important markets and make it difficult for countries to bring their networks up to speed. the european parliament has ratified a free trade deal between the e.u. and singapore an agreement that the bloc hopes will serve as a blueprint for future deals. virtually all trade barriers between the two economies over the next five years. trade amounted to ninety billion euros and goods and services last year individual member states must still approve the measure. and now we're heading to the berlin international film festival which is underway just across town from here and correspondent is on the red carpet for us this evening we have to start my own with some controversy because the chinese film one second has been withdrawn from its world premiere and from the competition what happened. we were all extremely surprised yesterday when we looked at our schedules
9:18 pm
and saw that this film which had been somewhat highly anticipated was suddenly canceled the press screenings have been canceled it was pulling out of the competition and the explanation that we were given was that there were technical problems that are preventing it from being screened but the thing is the directors john you mo is rather beloved at the berlin international film festival he was the first ever chinese director so when the golden bear back in one nine hundred eighty eight his films have had good runs here he's always well received he's also the man who directed the two thousand and eight opening ceremony for the beijing olympics which is something that so many people remember it was so memorable and one thing that our correspondent my colleague scott roxboro has found through his reporting and his connections that this may actually be unfortunately a case of censorship this film that he was about to premiere it was dealt with the time of the cultural revolution which is still a very sensitive topic in china in even though the director is also very highly
9:19 pm
regarded in china it looks like not even he could get the cultural revolution past the censors and if this is a case of censorship that's extremely worrying for international film and international free speech and that wasn't the only controversy right there's also one about another film in competition we used to and marcella tell us about that case. absolutely so just a few hours ago we had the red carpet premiere of that film and protesters actually crashed the red carpet holding signs that said in german cinemas and not streaming festival which is in reference to the controversy around this room which is that netflix was the one who gave the money to produce this film and this caused a huge up for in berlin cinema community resulting in this letter that with this open letter that was written to deter costa like the director of the berlin film festival demanding that he withdraw. all the film from consideration because it
9:20 pm
basically shrugged his shoulders and said no it's staying in we have to adapt to the times netflix and other streaming services are going to continue taking over so it's staying in. the berlin film festival i mean we have to say it's renowned for obscure or art house films too and i understand that you've actually seen one. funny you should mentions of the big film this morning was a documentary by legendary french filmmaker agnes varda called. agnes varda if you don't know her she was one of the original feminists in the filmmaking scene one of the original female directors she is now over ninety years old she is spry and sharp as a tack and funny and very charming which i hope you so lucky to be like her when we're that age but the film itself is sort of this mash up of like an autobiography documentary ted talk about her process in the way that she approaches the themes
9:21 pm
that she works with the way she approaches are art and her films i will say though if you are not familiar with her work you're not familiar with her maybe skip this one it's not for the uninitiated a maya stranger on the red carpet thank you now we're heading to the philippines where a comment by president. last december prompted us to look at the issue of domestic worker abuse in the country during a speech to tara today admitted to sexually assaulting his maid when he was a teenager into a widespread criticism from filipinos and women's rights groups and we want to know what this means for the nearly two million domestic workers employed in the country our correspondent anna santos filed this report. lucy was only fifteen when a relative hired her as her domestic worker her parents thought she would be safe with them she wasn't. been send them that they. don't
9:22 pm
want to do. well and given the lucky back that you. should not be quitters are lucky i mean yeah it but lucky luck with that was it but now i'm in the messiah what we end up buying at the end that will knock some condos i'm on the. high end i share my you really expand. domestic work is a default job for many filipinos but it can also be dangerous the president of the philippines even weighed in recently on the abuse of domestic help in what many saw as a shocking confession on what he did decades ago. yet all. yeah. yeah. yeah. yeah.
9:23 pm
yeah yeah when father being president rodrigo the character recently confessed to molesting his domestic worker as a teen he reveals a dirty little secret many domestic workers in the philippines are sexually assaulted by their employers. the police aka runs a union for domestic workers and was also shocked by the president's admission saw and often referred on degree sad and degrading. for you on the spot not just because workers have a low status. does that mean they can be treated this way. but you would. nobody that freddie sachs says that while rape is the worst that can happen domestic workers faced sexual harassment on a near daily. mail employer once groped her while she was changing
9:24 pm
a light bulb she did not complain thinking his wife would not believe her care pretty as a lawyer who has been at the forefront of women's rights for over a decade sexual abuse. domestic workers here in different opinions is very prevalent unfortunately we do not have statistics on that. and this is probably because of the silence of the victim silence of the families because it happens in their families there is a law to protect the estimated one point nine million domestic workers in the philippines but activists say it's flawed domestic workers can be as young as fifteen and when people are too young to know their rights and fight back against abuse and violence like the kind lucy experienced over twenty years ago. how. did not. i say you will.
9:25 pm
lucy endured a lifetime of shame and suffering she hopes that with the president's admission more domestic workers will break the silence on their past so that other women don't have to suffer. in haiti of these six people have died in nearly a week of protests calling for the country's president giovanna to resign the demonstrations have paralyzed the capital port au prince across the impoverished caribbean nation anger is mounting with people accusing the government of economic mismanagement and corruption. thousands take to the streets of port au prince to show their rage against the president. lawlessness is rampant and transportation has ground to a halt. protesters in the haitian capital of been venting their frustration for nearly a week several people have died some from police gunfire the demonstrators want
