11:01 am
and i've been a very warm welcome to the program i'm on your trip as mckinnon and ellen germany's chancellor angela merkel has made a plea for multilateralism in a world dominated by three superpowers speaking at the annual munich security conference she warns that international political structures were falling apart we cannot simply break them down she said in an apparent reference to u.s. president donald trump let's have a listen now to some of what michael had to say. but it's better than simply staying home alone and i think not is exactly the right answer to the motto of the great puzzle who will pick up the pieces we only all of us together thank you. all right to break down now what michael had

to say i'm joined by our political correspondent for million. start with you we heard knuckle talking about the transatlantic relationship talking about the importance of talking multi-lateralism did she make a step towards the u.s. with her speech or was it the opposite so it only was the quote we've heard her say just at the beginning was that actually a quote that she was taking from you thought system lindsey graham of the republican party and yes she certainly has in her speech shown that she's not only promoting multilateralism but these she really wants to embody it so she's reaching out the hands to all parts that are currently sort of vacillating for being a superpower in the world both the united states and russia but also china is a rising superpower and she's really shown that she wants to be a brokering part in facilitating peace and stability in this rather than secure its

moment or if we can turn to you now melinda you you're in munich you were listening to the speech what was it that really jumped out at you from what merkel said were there any surprises or what was there as as expected. i think the surprise is what a strong speech this was probably the best one i have ever heard her give at this venue and one of the best i've ever heard her give it all and i've been here reporting from the conference ever since her first year as chancellor that ringing endorsement of multilateralism was one of her strongest messages not surprising but very very well phrased indeed including statements like when i meet with president xi jinping we talk about what we can learn from each other those are rare words these days where china more and more is portrayed by many people and certainly by many u.s. decision makers as an adversary also ringing words about russia saying do we really
11:04 am
want to force russia into the arms of china or can we find ways to work together then i think in terms of the message that she was sending to u.s. decision makers besides saying that nation first american first policies won't help us solve the challenges that we face she had a couple of other messages as well starting out her speech for example with a reference to what's called the age of the anthropocene to the fact that human traces are now to be seen in every aspect of life on this planet climate change at the very outset of her speech as a major issue that we will only face if we work together then moving beyond that she also pleaded essentially for us european cooperation both on iran which has been as you know a source of great tension between the europeans and the u.s.
11:05 am
and on syria saying if we don't retain our leverage and our influence of the these situations and these countries then we are simply going to be facing more chaos in future so a very strong response there to the u.s. pressure just this past week on the on the europe to essentially break off. all ties with iran and then finally she has some words on trade that actually got a big laugh in the audience she pointed out that the u.s. is considering once again imposing trade sanctions on european and german cars and she said you know what we're proud of our cars and the reason you want to do this is you say it's a threat to u.s. national security but the biggest b.m.w. plant is in south carolina is that a security threat and that got a big laugh in the audience and i think again a very clear message there to a very big u.s. delegation at this conference melinda you are right i mean she covered a huge array of topics in this speech terrorism global security enron africa and
11:06 am
development now one important issue that she didn't mention was the global refugee crisis can you tell us a little bit about what she said about. well she said in this is a message she had given here a couple of years ago as well in her speech the fact that we got that enormous influx of refugees in two thousand and fifteen had to do with the fact that we ignored this crisis prior to that and she has certainly taken responsibility for that neglect herself and then she said but we must find a way to work with the countries of origin of migration meaning with africa with the middle east to ensure that there are sufficient opportunities for the young and that they will not feel impelled to leave their countries and this was in the context of talking about security as a holistic issue saying we can't take this solely military approach to these challenges that again is also an interactive message on the u.s. the u.s.
11:07 am
has been pushing and pushing for germany to increase its cooperation to nato she's saying look we are contributing to security not only with military expenditures but also with all of the work we do on development cooperation and she said there we have increased our budget our expenditures too in the same measure we have as we have increased our military expenditures and that needs to be acknowledged and counted. all right linda crane reporting for us live from munich thank you so much for that and much of indiana thank you as well will be continuing our coverage of the munich security conference as it continues today but for now we're going to have a look at some of the other stories making news around the world at least seven people have died in violent protests in haiti the protests have been going on for the nine days attempt to use the government of corruption and according on the president to resign. north koreans are celebrating at the seventy seventh anniversary of the

to the live shows. to. see you the election. a little bit. now a correspondent is live for us in lagos i have ali and we didn't hear many details about exactly why the elections of being postponed what more do we know about that . right indeed quite a sketchy explanation the commission did not go into any details they just cited logistical and operational reasons but what we know is that in the last days and weeks several offices of the electoral commissions where set ablaze in various parts of the country and apparently lots of voter id cards were burned but also caught trudeau's which are necessary for the operation of the election so this might be one of the reasons why do decided to postpone it why did the announcement comes so late i mean it was in the middle of the night just before polls were supposed to open that's indeed

a big shocker nigeria has seen it before that election where postponed the past two elections where postponed but not that spontaneous just five hours before the elections and i just went out in lagos a little bit to talk to people and most of them are really angry and frustrated they just woke up ready to reload and then they got the news that they not be able to vote and you have to know that people really have to reschedule their days here for election days because the movement of vehicles is not allowed on election days and nigeria's everybody really had plans to go out to vote and now they learnt that this was not going to be possible you can still be see behind me there's rarely any movement on the streets is not a normal day yet and now people know that next week the same thing will happen again so they will have to make their time available next week. so people are feeling angry what about the opposition has there been any reaction from the opposition yet well actually both the opposition party the p.d.p. of article the and the governing party a.p.c. . condemned the elections where postponed they criticised the electoral commission
