exactly you are reading. my name is the name too and i work at it dept. this is d w news live from berlin and allies heading in different directions champneys germany's chancellor merkel calls for more multilateralism and warns that international political structures off falling apart but u.s. vice president mike pence choices allée file allies for not supporting the u.s. on iran will be live at the munich security conference also coming up.
1:01 pm
nigeria's presidential election postponed for a week electoral commission made the announcement just hours before polling booths would you to open. and the man who played his left bruno god has died at the age of seventy seven it claimed swiss x. it was considered one of the most important stars of german language cinema. hello and welcome to the program i knew cooper's mckinnon to our allies but heading in very different directions that's how it looks off to contrast in speeches by germany's chancellor angela merkel and the u.s. vice president mike pence at the munich security conference muckle made a plea for multilateralism for nations to work together to security but pence
1:02 pm
criticized the u.s. as allies accusing the europeans of undermining sanctions against iran has some of what they said starting with chancellor merkel. multilateralism may be complicated but it's better than simply staying home alone and i think that is exactly the right answer to the motto of this great puzzle who will pick up the pieces we only all of us together thank you thank. our chief political correspondent melinda crane joins us live from new munich melinda we've heard three major speeches of german chancellor angela merkel the chinese pilot bureau member for responsibility for foreign affairs young she and us by the president mike pence please tell us what the most important points of vice president pence a speech were. yes. i would say
1:03 pm
absolutely not taking the hand that chancellor merkel had stretched out to him in the sense of saying we need to work together to solve the challenges that we face we need to be using all of the tools and means at our disposal from diplomacy and development cooperation to military measures and we need to keep our influence open even where we're facing nations whose behavior we may not like such as iran rather than simply jettisoning all all ability and all institutions and processes that we might have to influence them instead he took a very very narrow view of what constitutes strength and leadership in terms of u.s. leader she says shippey said we are exercising leadership because we are pushing
1:04 pm
our fellow nato allies to contribute more of the air of their economic budgets to defense expenditures whereas the chancellor had said you know what that's important but we need to look beyond that to what are we contributing to development cooperation and there we have greatly increased our investments he also took a pretty confrontational stance on issues ranging from. way the chinese telecom company that is looking to build five g. networks in europe he said europeans absolutely must reject that he told them they absolutely must reject any further time in office for president maduro and venezuela they must now recognize. and he was also very very critical to the point almost of. embarrassing his host germany when it came to the

german. push for the natural gas pipeline north stream which would bring russia natural gas to germany so essentially a very confrontational stance from the vice president in response to a very cooperative appeal from the chancellor. this is a very confrontational. can you give us an idea of what muckle was saying about those issues that really highlight the differences between germany and the u.s. what was merkel position on those issues when she spoke to day. well let's take that nord stream natural gas pipeline and there she said you know what we need to try to work with russia where we can and if we don't do that we will drive russia into the arms of china and that was kind of interesting not only in terms of then vice president pence's very strong condemnation of that pipeline but
1:06 pm
also in terms of what we've just heard from the chinese leader who has just been speaking who talked about china's good cooperation with russia and by the way mr sergei lavrov the russian foreign minister is speaking at this very moment and he too is talking trying to present russia in a way as a multilateral lists and talking about cooperation also with china so a certain irony there beyond that the chancellor as i mentioned talked about the need for a holistic view of human security and she began her remarks by saying that human security our whole point of view on it has changed in this moment in time where we recognize that human behavior starting with climate change but in any many other ways as well has had a fundamental impact on our planet so she said we need measures of cooperation we
1:07 pm
need all the soft power tools at our disposal diplomacy and others in order to try to address the roots of conflict where they began and with that she specially referred to africa and the vice president on the other hand when he talked about africa he again talked about exclusively. military initiatives they are like the g five military mission in the sun hell so essentially we have two real differences in world view absolutely clashing on that stage in the main conference room today all right. chief political correspondent melinda crane thank you so much for your reporting from the munich security conference. ok let's have a look at some of the other stories making news around the world pope francis has expelled the former u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood a church disciplinary panel had found him guilty of soliciting sex from adults and
1:08 pm
mynahs over decades from this comes just days before the pope hosts a church summit on preventing child abuse. at least seven people have died in violent protests in haiti the protests have been going on for nine days protesters are accusing the government of corruption and a calling on the president to resign. nigerians were supposed to be heading to the polls today to choose a new president but in a shock move the election was postponed for a week the delay and now it's just a few hours before voting was scheduled to start and polling stations remain shut it was expected to be a tight trace between president mohammed who bihari and the main opposition candidate businessman and former vice president asif above called the chairman of the independent national electoral commission made the announcement. we would eat your food if you will in the office loses it's over so.

that it's an issue for him to be there for the live shows. the issue to deal with. but of course you know they should pursue. this a lot of. this group to do. that will be sure to decide who is who the person who will listen to the sooner that. sort. through this is the way to the. now a correspondent is live for us in lagos oddly and we didn't hear many details about exactly why the elections of being postponed what more do we know about that. right indeed quite a sketchy explanation the commission did not go into any details they just cited logistical and operational reasons but what we know is that in the last days and
1:10 pm
weeks several offices of the electoral commissions were set ablaze in various parts of the country and apparently a lot of voter id cards were burned but also caught traders which necessary for the operation off the election so this might be one of the reasons why decided to postpone it why did the announcement comes so late i mean it was in the middle of the night just before polls were supposed to open that's indeed a big shocker nigeria has seen it before that election where postpone the past two elections with postponed but not that spontaneous just five hours before the elections and i just went out in lagos a little bit to talk to people and most of them are really angry and frustrated they just woke up ready to reload and then they go to the news that they're not be able to vote and you have to know that people really have to reschedule their days here for election days because the movement of vehicles is not allowed on election days in nigeria so everybody really had plans to go out to vote and now they learnt that this was not going to be possible you can still be see behind me there's rarely any movement on the streets is not

a normal day yet and now people know that next week the same thing will happen again so they will have to make that time available next week. so people are feeling angry what about the opposition has there been any reaction from the opposition yet well actually both the opposition party the p.d.p. of barca and the governing party a.p.c. . condemned the elections where postponed they criticised the electoral commission for it and they blamed each other basically for trying to fake some things in the elections they didn't go into details it's just the good old blame game that we've also been seeing in their campaigning time without any evidence whatsoever. now what happens next there are any guarantees that the election will actually take place next weekend. well no guarantees but i think it's very likely that they will happen i think is and the electoral commission is under fire right now many people

angry and also the whole world is watching there's a lot of journalists in the country a lot of election observers and i do believe that they will really have to make sure that the elections will happen except today all right thank you reporting for us from lagos thanks very much the acclaimed swiss act of bruno has died at the age of seventy seven considered one of the most important contemporary ounces of german language cinema is international breakthrough crate came starring in them venders nine hundred eighty seven movie wings of desire one of his most challenging roles was playing adult hitler in the oscar dominated nominated film downfall a pretrial he told the w. had been a particularly overwhelming task to start a new morose international productions. and some more on this i'm joined in the studio by. correspondent scott thanks for
1:13 pm
joining us scott and bringing guns was one of the greatest actors in the german speaking world what was it that propelled him to such fame i think it was his style of acting i mean he started as a theater actor and he stayed in theater also his entire career but he wasn't a stage actor even though he was incredibly successful on stage it's all style of performance was interior so he was always incredibly restrained it was really the show not tell style of actor not the sort of output you know screamer but someone who is always going to be introspective and withdrawn and that particularly played well on screen so after success in theater he moved to television first and then he was discovered by filmmakers people inventors and. incredibly interior performance where you could see to read everything in his face that was that was what allowed him such success but at the same time he could flip it and he could become volcanic in an instant and i think that combination really was almost

unique and was what made little dance especially when he covered a variety of roles faust a fallen angel and of course to great critical acclaim. why did that particular role generate so much attention from around the world yeah i think it's because. possible role and up to that there's been many hitlers performed by also great often british actors but they were always sort of parodies because no one really could imagine how you could do a figure like hitler as a human being and what guns banshee do in this film is not to humanize hitler but to somehow embody him and make him physical and put him in this world his performance is quite incredible the there are the raging scenes everyone knows because they've been copied so much online but his real performance is restrained and human and i think that was it was completely unique and was groundbreaking all right. thank you so much for joining me. all right that's
