and the world the peace security and freedom they deserve. applause for pence was more restrained than it had been from naxal. but despite the major differences of opinion the two did meet face to face with a friendly hen shake for the photo op at least. and joining us now from the munich security conference is political correspondent teri schultz terry tell us german chancellor merkel and u.s. president vice president attends laid out very different visions about how the west should address the crises the world is facing or these differences entrenched behind the scenes as they appear to be in their speeches. we certainly don't see any sign that either side would back down in private after such strident speeches america was stronger than we normally see her very bold statements saying that
9:05 pm
we're going to keep talking to russia we're going to keep supporting north stream two we believe the iran nuclear deal is the right way forward and even criticizing u.s. policy in syria the decision to possibly pull out troops as actually giving iran more leverage so the chancellor really stole the day here and everyone here is talking about miracles speech vice president pence went along well well they expected lines of of u.s. policy the same criticisms that they've had of the european union but the threat as you just heard in that piece that that perhaps u.s. protection won't extend to american allies if they continue to have ties with russia i mean that's something that certainly perking up ears around her around here says. merkel was as you're saying urging the u.s. to continue international cooperation. spoke with the chairman of the munich security conference will staying issue who commented about her speech earlier in an interview let's hear what he had to say. chancellor merkel of course has made her

point with lots of roots in the position namely that we are not in favor of zero sum games we want multilateralism to prevail we won to win win situations we want cooperation and i think she got a standing ovation at the end which is something that has never ever happened before in this conference in fifty five years. or something about it me terry the theme of this year's need security conference was supposed to be here's the question the big puzzle who will pick up the pieces are there any answers out there . i think as europe often has in the past they would turn to chancellor merkel and of course have said she will no longer be heading up germany everyone is going to be looking for another strong figure leading europe at the same time as much as the united states is considered to be one of the reasons why the world is in pieces you have a stronger congressional delegation here at the munich security conference than
9:07 pm
ever before chairman issue here told me that he didn't invite more senators and congresspeople they asked him if they could come they know the transatlantic relationship is in trouble and they want to do their part to try to preserve it at least at the level between parliamentarians and speaker of the house nancy pelosi will be heading to brussels after this to continue those talks so it remains to be seen whether the pieces can be put back together but at least you have europeans and americans trying to do so. ok to diffuse a teri schultz many thanks for that. and now to some of the other stories making news around the world. pope francis has expelled the former u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood a church disciplinary panel had found him guilty of soliciting sex from adults and minors over decades the move comes just days before the pope posts a church summit on preventing child abuse. and hundreds of yellow vest protesters have marched through paris for the fourteenth straight weekend police fired tear

so how are nigerians reacting to the last minute postponement correspondent adrian creech was out on the streets of a somewhat deserted lagos' to find out almost empty streets in the center of lagos that's a very rare thing to see in the city of almost twenty million people but today the elections were scheduled in just cancelled five hours before offices schools businesses everything still remains closed and many people are disappointed that the elections were postponed. i'm sad i'm angry i'm annoyed. and. i'm disappointed. that all those words that's how i'm feeling today because you wake up. all excited about going to food are you we call. on you going to your social media i know you see what you see is it has been postponed people have a lot of things to do to d.
9:10 pm
which we can know what. you say you should from now to ministry to prove to be disappointed to get. the electoral commission said they had to postpone the elections due to operational and logistical reasons without going into further details but we know that several offices of the electoral commission is we're set ablaze in the last days and weeks voters' i.d.'s burned as well as the coppery dust that were necessary for the elections to take place despite the frustration in many places nigerian cloonan here in lagos many people are also trying to make the best out of their day and just have some fun. and today's the big day at the birth berlin international film festival the bears have been handed out at the berlin alley for us our share of the chance until and scott roxboro who join us now at the red carpet took the golden bear.
9:11 pm
i have a neg yes we know who won the battle not as top prize to do to create our own show do it that a little over a synonym yes it is rated film is by the director never had lockheed and it really tells the story of a young israeli man searching for his identity he's a full name is very defensible soldier trying to escape his past yeah this film was really interesting because it sort of falls apart of a lot of films you've probably seen it's about an ex-pat in paris trying to find their way what gives the still a bit of an edge is the connection to israel this is a former i.d.f. soldier who's trying to escape his house by the century throwing themselves into the paris nightlife into the paris streets and also into the language. of french he he goes to the entire field of voiding speaking hebrew and desperately trying to create a new identity for himself in this in this new language and this what really got me
9:12 pm
about this film that was the lead character the lead actor in. a complete unknown and here i mean he's amazing i mean he's he's naked through half of the movie which could be also peeling for some of it for me remind me a lot of young tom hardy i mean he's a really powerful force of nature in this movie and well deserving of having been on or so tonight right i mean the jury said ahead of this vessel that what it was looking for is a film where the past no combines with the political that was the whole theme at the festival and this is a film where you can really say that's the case you can then understand why it did get the top prize definitely and what made this festival stand out otherwise. well for me i have to say it was the number of female directors with films competing this year of the sixteen films that were in competition seven were directed by women and that is on her in the international film festival circuit that is far more than than anywhere else can except it's
9:13 pm
a big deal yes definitely definitely cannot be overestimated over emphasized how important is that female representation here and one of the people responsible for that is the outgoing director dieter calls like this is his last festival after eighteen years at the helm and for me that was very special moment i've known peter a long long time and he was given a real a real sendoff at the board ceremony tonight they finished it off after they had all the gold and silver bearers with a huge teddy bear that a broad stance for him for him to embrace and i think that symbolized the basically how the whole city of berlin would like to give her a huge bear hug and thank him for what he's done for this festival what he's done really for said of un general yeah i think it's quite a nation an emotional moment for a lot of people hand saying goodbye to dita causing the people outside here on the right carpet wearing his trademark black hat and red scarf just town chanting his name yeah yeah like dieter writes little to right a little many of us all all across the red carpet it was quite something to say
9:14 pm
just to us quick question if i may so long my son was a big favorite i know scott you're a big fan of it how did it do. yeah we were expecting not to take the gold and that she that is the that's what we had. money on didn't fight it did still walk away with two major prizes it got back to shane and best actress for young men they were no no in this film they played it and married couple who lost their son in this film really deals with china's film a one child policy citizens like plants and it's good enough that you and i all i really expect this film to win it was the best film for me of the bad in all of this year but i think there's one of the reasons maybe why it didn't is there was another very big chinese film that was supposed to screen here lose one second it was pulled from the festival some people are thinking that might have been censorship and i think. berlin didn't want want to give a chinese film the top prize for fear of maybe being seen to be to the beijing
9:15 pm
