this is deja news live from berlin allies heading in different directions germany's chancellor i'm going to mask of the calls for more multi-lateralism and warns that international political structures are failing a part of u.s. vice president mike pence chides his allies for not supporting the u.s. on iran also coming up. the vatican dismisses a former catholic cardinal from the priesthood in connection with child sex abuse charges is the most senior catholic cleric to receive punishment in modern church history. the berlin international film festival comes to

a time with the coveted golden they're going to no doubt keeps film synonyms it's about an israeli man tries to suppress his origins after moving to paris. hello and welcome to the program nick spicer political heavyweights made speeches on the second day of the munich security conference with both german chancellor i'm going to meth and u.s. vice president mike pence taking to the podium fence has repeatedly criticized europe of late mathilde made an appeal for more international cooperation but she also didn't shy away from the major points of contention between berlin and washington. america was not going to mean so words relations between the u.s. and germany have been tense recently and energy policy is one of the points of
10:02 pm
contention the u.s. criticised north stream to america defended the planned gas pipeline linking russia to germany if the month no one wants to become unilaterally dependent to russia but during the cold war i was still living in east germany and we only got russian gas anyway but the former west germany also imported a lot of its gas from russia and i don't know why the times are supposed to be so much worse now that we don't say russia's still a partner. america also spoke out against threatened us tariffs on german cars trump claims that all too imports are a threat to national security but marital poing to doubt the german companies also produce cars in america. then yes these are otoh if these cars which are no less of a threat if they are made in south carolina than if they were made in bavaria are suddenly a threat to the national security of the us that shocks us. trumps daughter did not

seem impressed. though continued with a passionate plea for multilateralism and cooperation at the end standing ovations risking munich. mike pence didn't even arrive in the auditorium until after american speech he responded to the issue of germany's business links with russia with the threat we cannot ensure the defense of the west if our allies grow dependent on the east. with the us vice president also criticised over iran. the time has come for our european partners to withdraw from the iran nuclear deal and join us as we bring the economic and diplomatic pressure necessary to give the iranian people the region and the world the peace security and freedom they deserve. applause for pence was more restrained than it

had been. but despite the major differences of opinion the two did meet face to face with a friendly hen shake for the photo op at least. simon young caught up with the german foreign minister heiko mass at the munich conference simon to quiz the minister on the issues topping the agenda there. by mia is with me is heikal mask the german foreign minister thank you for being here with much of ella today there are many differences of opinion among the countries represented in munich here today for example regarding the line of missile treaty but you how can germany respond to russia and the united states saying they're withdrawing from it. does or slant on the family can start and sarkozy taking dolls . they are definite i guess well for now the treaty has been put on hold by both sides there's now a six month time limit before the cancellation takes effect and since the russian
10:05 pm
breached this agreement by developing nuclear mid range missile systems it's actually very simple to reinstate the treaty by restoring contract compliance within those six months whether it will turn out that way is uncertain because they could have already done that in recent weeks so when it comes to the issue of disarmament an arms control i think we should not just be talking to russia and the u.s. but to china soon and those talks also need to cover new types of weapons robotic weapons or cyber weapons for example which aren't covered adequately by international regulations so those issues need to be put on the table and as we're currently sitting on the security council we plan to bring them up isn't thought of . and it was because. moving on to another topic gas from russia north stream to the chancellor said today that it doesn't matter where the gas comes from germany and europe will need a lot of gas in the years ahead is that how you see it also. now this is good yes
10:06 pm
and it's also good that we've reached agreement with the european union about how to deal with this and regulated in law that's an agreement we reached recently of heart from that it's an economic project and it's important for us politically to get gas delivered from russia to europe and to have an alternative transit route through ukraine and then ukraine also profit from the transit fees they need the money very urgent. you there so it's a major issue that's the political side that we in the german government also expect the russians to comply with and president putin has promised the chancellor that if that's guaranteed then i believe it's a good thing for ukraine and then the fear that ukraine will be bypassed along with the loss of income from fees won't become a reality you know. in afghanistan to afghanistan where the u.s. will probably soon want to pull out to withdraw its troops early the chancellor
10:07 pm
said today that germany has a european nato partner is likely to be left in the lurch there what basis for negotiation do you see with the us to avoid that situation. well how could we won't be left in the lurch because honestly we wouldn't be able to stay on without the american armed forces since we depend on them we rely on the capacities and capabilities of the americans it's all interconnected it's important for us that such decisions aren't simply announced out of the blue and that we don't just learn about it from the media but that we are consulted. we provide the second largest contingent of troops for afghanistan it's of central importance also for our own involvement there and that's why i was assured in talks that i held in washington that there's apparently no plan yet regarding when and to what extent troops will be withdrawn and that any such plan should be discussed with us in detail because we have to know because there are consequences for our military

engagement in afghanistan. is on those more in afghanistan i call must be undone. and now to some of the other stories making news around the world. nigeria's independent electoral commission postponed today's presidential election just hours before polls were due to open the two leading candidates condemned the decision and blamed each other the delayed voting is now due to take place next saturday. hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets of barcelona to protest against the trial of catalan separatist leaders trough politicians and activists promoted an independence referendum in twenty seventeen in defiance of a court and if a sentences of up to twenty five years on charges of rebellion and other offenses. and hundreds of yellow vests protestors have marched through paris for the fourteenth straight weekend police fired tear gas after some demonstrators left the

approved route polls suggest support for the weekend protest is waning it began over fuel taxes and expanded into a more general rules against the government. pope francis has dismissed former u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood the move came after vatican officials found him guilty of sexual abuse and soliciting sex over decades and characters the highest ranking catholic church men return to receive this sanction also known as defrocking the announcement was made just days before francis hosts a church summit on preventing child abuse. the punishment handed down to this american cleric is unprecedented the former archbishop of washington theodore mccarrick soliciting sex from aspiring priests again and abused at least two minors between one thousand nine hundred ninety and one nine hundred ninety. he had already been stripped of his status as a cardinal last july in itself
10:10 pm
a bombshell for the church father bad haagen caught the vatican you say the move is a good thing. is quite clear in this regard the problem in the past was that it wasn't applied the issue was covered up people look the other way now it simply gone through official channels with a very prominent figure it's not a papal decision but it really should be. last summer pope francis ordered an investigation into mccarrick the vatican reached its verdict on january eleventh mccarrick some pills were rejected beginning this thursday leaders of bishops conferences from around the world will meet with pope francis for four days in rome on the agenda abuse in the catholic church and how to protect children critics accuse the pope of doing too little too late in dealing with allegations of abuse victims of charge the vatican with not paying enough attention to their claim. and on as i'm happier news today is the big day at the berlin international film

festival the bears have been handed out at the barely nalley forests are charlotte charleston phil and scott rocks who join us now right from the red carpet tell us who took the golden bear. yes we can tell you who won the top prize at the sixty nine annual bat in film festival but first drum roll please don't know that. it's senator. it's an israeli film and it tells the story of the young man a full net member of the israeli defense force who is trying to find his identity in a new country that's trying to escape his heart. and be the interesting but this film i mean it's a story probably seen a lot before you probably see a lot before it's the ex-pat in paris story but it's given a certain edge because we have a former israeli soldier who's so desperate to escape the horrors that he's seen an experience of the politics of his home country that he just immerses himself in

paris street life and in the parent parasite and also in the in the french language a big big thing about this film is that he's desperately trying to avoid speaking hebrew to only speak french throughout the in tire film as a way of sort of scrubbing away his past head and emerging as he has someone new right that is not going to being a. particular jury said that they were looking for films web politics collides with people's personal lives is not something that you can really see in this film definitely definitely there was a lot of talk about a movie called so long my son a big big favorite how did it do. yeah there was actually a tip for the when they're all this bike it wasn't her just something i think you'll find i agree with you on that occasion it is our top tip that the film prize yeah i didn't get it. they really think prizes it was top prize the actress the young may and the act at the wang scene should and they were by have saved the

nominal and so they had to have gotten some sort of prize yes the film itself just briefly it's it's a story told over decades of chinese history starting in the culture of illusion coming up to the present day and it follows these two husband and wife and essentially it's a critique of china's one child policy there are a couple that lose a child in the cultural revolution and because of the then policy that they can only have one child are unable to have another child throughout their in the rest of their lives it's a heartbreaking story it's excruciating again it's the what it was saying it's the personal as political event that shows up there is political critique here but it's told through a very very intimate very deep personal story and i defy you to sit through this movie without bawling your eyes at the end of the film is so tragic it's it was a phenomenal film i expected could should have expected with actually the golden bear but there might even be a political issue there because there was another political film another chinese

film that was supposed to screen here in competition moves one second but it was pulled at the very last minute just before it was supposed to screen on friday and though officially the line is it was because of technical difficulties there's also been the suggestion that it could have been because of censorship because the film itself deals with the cultural revolution it set in the cultural revolution and that is a big no go area for most chinese filmmakers so it could have been i'm not suggesting this was the case but it could be the jury let that influence them somewhat and thought that maybe giving the top prize as well as the two acting prizes to a chinese film might be too much supporting too too much p.r. for the chinese government would be the. without a whiff of politics can you tell us was there anything else that made this festival stand out. well for me i have to say it was number female directors with films competing this year that was seven out of the sixteen films in competition with directed by women and that is record breaking it is already
