been from natalie. but despite the major differences of opinion the two did meet face to face with a friendly hand shake for the photo op at least. ok let's bring in political correspondent simon young his at the security conference in munich hi simon the contrasting priorities between the the u.s. and germany have never been saved clear is this the point where germany and europe have to admit that me historic alliance isn't sustainable anymore and that they need to strike a more independent course. was certainly john's le meur hasn't gone to that place yet said in that speech yesterday that you saw there she was talking trying to answer the question that this conference is posed who will pick up the pieces if the global multilateral system somehow falls apart will her answer at the end very clearly only all of us together can do that and she was talking to this

audience of europeans of americans but also chinese are very global perspective that she presented and she said you know well look at the nuclear missile treaty that the doubts have been raised about you know we've got america and the russians are pulling back from that but who picks up the pieces is the europeans so interconnectedness if the united states pulls its troops out of afghanistan other nato allies will be forced to pull out early perhaps as well and they don't want to do that so that the nexus is what she emphasized and she also said you know there's nothing there's a small country of eighty million people like germany as she described it can do if the economic might of the united states with these powerful dollar or indeed the population weight of a country like china is put against it so to solve the world. problems you need to bring the countries together of course some could say well if you if you go too

much for compromise it's going to be too difficult to get a deal in this idea of network security in defense has also been suggested you know we need to have a flexible bilateral alliances like the americans want but angela merkel presented this strong vision of a multilateral order and she really said that there is no alternative to that going forward in case there are real focus on working together now obviously there was a lot said about iran as well and the iranian foreign affairs minister will be speaking in munich this morning how is he likely to respond to the heated discussions over iran at the conference a. year will be interesting to see if he directly responds to those comments by the u.s. vice president yesterday might pence saying that you know more pressure needs to be put on the uranium the americans want to follow the route of economic sanctions really turning up the heat and he called on the europeans to stop on demining as he

put it u.s. efforts to get iran to be compliant we've been in the in only its nuclear ambitions chancellor merkel said well we share that goal but we want to use the iran deal that we've agreed with other partners to do exactly the same thing so it'll be interesting to see if the iranian foreign minister refers to that or whether he prefers to sort of drive a wedge between us and american positions that discussion between parents and medical after their speeches was described as frank by the american side of things that's code for not all that friendly or productive all right political correspondent. and key say much. hope front has expelled format u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood and the move came after that six. officials found him guilty of sexual abuse against both adults and minus

a characters the highest ranking catholic cleric to receive the sanction in modern times and else went was made just days before the hosts a church summit on preventing child abuse. the punishment handed down to this american cleric is unprecedented the former archbishop of washington theodore mccarrick soliciting sex from aspiring priests and abused at least two minors between one nine hundred seventy and one nine hundred ninety. he had already been stripped of his status as a cardinal last july in itself a bombshell for the church father bad haagen caught the vatican you say the move is a good thing. is quite clear in this regard the problem in the past was that it wasn't applied the issue was covered up people look the other way now it's simply gone through official channels with a very prominent figure it's not a papal decision but it really should be. last summer pope francis ordered an

investigation into mccarrick the vatican reached its verdict on january eleventh mccarrick some pills were rejected beginning this thursday leaders of bishops conferences from around the world will meet with pope francis for four days in rome on the agenda abuse in the catholic church and how to protect children critics accuse the pope of doing too little too late in dealing with allegations of abuse victims of charge the vatican with not paying enough attention to their claims. i'm joined now by religious affairs correspondent mustn't jack lawson thanks for joining us now this punishment is significant but why is theodore mccarrick the first former cardinal to have been dismissed for sex abuse when we know that being thousands of cases of abuse in the catholic church i think that to some degree the fact of such an occurrence already out of the loop is somebody that has been sort of essential to resign his position to sit cardinal prince of the church for a movie known in july of last year or so and this was a bit of a foregone conclusion at the same time it's

a very strong sign that he's being sent from from essentially the pup a-c. but the fact is that in some sense it's also quite ornamental so what does it say about the catholic church's efforts to deal with sexual abuse within the institution it's a it's a plaster of the wind basically in some senses a bluster over the wound i think that that's a correct assessment of the very same time because this is really unprecedented for a cardinal to actually be the frocked we're really just talking about somebody loosing essentially full color not only clerical duties but clerical old clerical titles and credentials. in the face of this four days of summit that we will have beginning on thursday that will run until sunday it could also be the first salvo or a warning shot for things to come in terms of policy i mean that you know this vatican essentially will not left any stone unturned and will go west for us it needs to go on as high as it needs to go to essentially impose reform this or however i must

say speculations and you know this is something that over the last twenty years let's keep in mind this in two thousand and one we really have the first explosion of this kind of hers nothing concrete really has happened ok so it's a positive sign but in the long term is it even possible for the catholic church to truly reform itself i think the short answer to that is no i mean the catholic church is a must have institution which essentially extends throughout the globe and you know it blows millions of people. quite literally so they did that you actually can reform a culture that is so ingrained and so broad it's probably just a pipe dream at the very same time the fact is that there are few standards that an institution can uphold that would actually lower the impact of this kind of abuse what we have here is not just a question of sexual abuse and this something that we have to remind ourselves constantly what we have here in our hands is actually a long long history of a major cover up that is running across

a very very large institution so the question here is not just where the church can reform itself and rid itself of sexual abuse no institution and this is something that we see across the board in all human activities the question that we have to ask is where the church actually smiting the right efforts in order to prevent these things actually being protected within its walls all right. thank you so much for joining your welcome. but an international film festival rounded out yesterday evening with a hollywood style ceremony the top prize the golden bear was awarded to the israeli direct hit for his film about leaving. the golden bear for best film ghosts to see no need. to add that. soon and then was directed by and he tells the story of an israeli man who moved to paris to escape the politics of his home country and discovers

some pill and scott roxboro have been following the festival the better known as made its name as the most political of the festivals this year the jury went as far as to say they were looking for in these where the past will collides with the political and that was in evidence with all the films that won this year and i think it's a real tribute to ocoee director peter cause look who said his goal in running this festival was to make the villain carpet a place for political statements not for taking selfies the jury had a fond farewell for a call slick who's directed the belinelli for eighteen years. we have a new surprise for you. thanks. ben as the festival wrapped up it was time for khosla to join the winners one last time. all
