the most senior top flight clerics be defrocked in more than time the vatican expelled a little by u.s. cardinals from the priesthood and the sexual crimes against adults and children. plus the gold and that goes to israel direct enough that lockheed wins the top prize at the but international film festival because drama synonyms about leaving one tehran will bring you older but not a highlight. i'm on your campus mackinnon thanks so much for joining us is the final day of the munich security conference and today's focus is the middle east a clash between the u.s. and its european allies over iran was already in evidence on. saturday u.s.

vice president mike pence cold on the e.u. to follow washington's lead and pull out of the twenty fifteen iran nuclear deal accusing europeans of undermining u.s. sanctions amid a growing divide between the u.s. and germany charts i'm going to machall defended the iran agreement as a kid channel to terror on it and stressed the need for international diplomacy iran's foreign minister zarif took to the podium a short while ago and to live it this response right here in the. midst of. repeated scores. written here on the demand that europe must join the united states in undermining its own security and bricking to talk with huge. his hate will accuse asians against it all. including his ignorant obligation of unto semitism against the years of the man

described as messiah. in the holy took off for satan to do. is both ridiculous but at the same time very very dangerous. ok let's bring in political correspondent simon young his at the security conference in munich hi simon very strong words there from iran's minister of foreign affairs how was the reefs criticism received by the audience in munich. well that hasn't been the chance yet for all the europeans to respond directly to the year that session is still going on in the main hall here but it was a strong speech i thought from the iranian foreign minister he talked about what he called the united states the logical obsession with iran and he said that the united states is the main source of destabilization in the region and
11:04 am
you know he also referred indirectly at least to the activities of saudi arabia in intervening in yemen and also you referred to the dismemberment of the journalist in turkey recently so he was you know pointing out that sort of through proxies as he called them in the region of the united states also working against the stability that it says that it wants and really sharp attack and also called on the europeans to decide which way they're going to have to fall on this debate about the iran nuclear deal he said in europe will need to get weight if it wants to swim against the tide of unilateralism clearly trying to sort of drive a little bit of a wedge between the european and american positions we saw yesterday in those speeches from anglo-american mike pence how far apart they really are in their approach on iran that's right now their if referred to what u.s.
11:05 am
vice president mike pence said yesterday at the security conference that's got a quick reminder of what exactly it was that pence said. the time has come for our european partners to stop undermining u.s. sanctions against this murderous revolution the time has come for european partners to stand with us and with the iranian people our allies and friends in the region the time has come for our european partners to withdraw from the iran nuclear deal . a murderous revolutionary regime very confrontational what's that what is this going to do to us e.u. relations. well i think it is a a rift and angela merkel acknowledged that directly but she said it in fact europe germany and the u.s. they pursue in the same goal in iran they want to make sure that iran doesn't get
11:06 am
nuclear weapons incidentally the iranian foreign minister said it was ludicrous to suggest that you had a ballistic missile program designed to create missiles that could carry nuclear weapons he said we don't have any nuclear weapons so that was used bold statement but angela merkel said you know we share the goal of preventing that we just think that the way to go about it is a different one we've carefully negotiated this j c p o a agreement and we're sticking with it for the moment and so are the other european allies but the americans are going a different direction saying it's time to turn up the heat and force to use economic forces in chile to put iran where they want them all right simon young at the security conference in munich thank you so much. no makers in berlin are bracing for washington to classify car imports as a national security threat that's according to a german business newspaper the hundreds blatt is reporting that u.s.

president donald trump will decide on the maps a soon which could place tariffs ranging from ten to twenty five percent on imported cars could make their calls from the european union exempt from the levies an option expected to be discussed in trade negotiations with the pla. now pope francis has expelled form a u.s. cardinal theodore mccarrick from the priesthood and there came after vatican officials found him guilty of sexual abuse against both adults and minors mccarrick is the highest ranking catholic crack character cleric to receive the sanction in modern times the announcement was made just days before the pope will be hosting a church summit on preventing child abuse. the punishment handed down to this american cleric is unprecedented the former archbishop of washington theodore mccarrick soliciting sex from aspiring priests again and abused at least two minors between one thousand nine hundred ninety and one nine hundred ninety. he had
11:08 am
already been stripped of his status as a cardinal last july in itself a bombshell for the church father bad harken caught the vatican you say the move is a good thing. is quite clear in this regard the problem in the past was that it wasn't applied the issue was covered up people looked the other way now it's simply gone through official channels with a very prominent figure it's not a papal decision but it really should be. the. last summer pope francis ordered an investigation into mccarrick the vatican reached its verdict on january eleventh mccarrick subpoenas were rejected beginning this thursday leaders of bishops conferences from around the world will meet with pope francis for four days in rome on the agenda abuse in the catholic church and how to protect children. critics of the keys oppose doing too little too late in dealing with allegations of abuse
11:09 am
victims of charge the vatican with not paying enough attention to that claim was. ok i'm joined now by the religious affairs correspondent mustn't jack russell thanks for joining us now this punishment is significant but why is theodore mccarrick the first former cardinal to have been dismissed for sex abuse when we know that being thousands of cases of abuse in the catholic church i think that to some degree the fact is stuff mccurry is already out of the loop you somebody that has been sort of essential to resign his position as a cardinal prince of the church for a movie known in july of last year or so and this was a bit of a foregone conclusion at the same time it's a very strong sign that he's being sent from from essentially about the city but the fact is in some sense it's also quite ornamental so what does it say about the catholic church as efforts to deal with sexual abuse within the institution it's a it's a plaster over the wound basically in some sense is a bluster over the wound i think that that's a correct assessment at the very same time because this is really unprecedented for
11:10 am
a cardinal to actually be the frocked we're really just talking about somebody loosing essentially full color not only clerical duties but clerical old clerical titles and credentials. in the face of this four days of summit that we will have beginning on thursday that will run until sunday it could also be the first salvo or a warning shot for things to come in terms of policy i mean that you know this vatican essential will not left any stone unturned and will go west for us it needs to go and that's how it needs to go to essentially impose reform this or however i must say speculations and you know this is something that over the last twenty years let's keep in mind this in two thousand and one we really have the first explosion of this kind of heard nothing concrete really has happened ok so it's a positive sign but in the long term is it even possible for the catholic church to truly reform itself. i think the short answer to that is no i mean the catholic church is a must have institution which essentially extends throughout the globe and you know
11:11 am
it did the blows millions of people quite literally so they did that you actually can reform a culture that is so ingrained and so broad it's probably just a biped dream at the very same time the fact is that there are policy standards that an institution can uphold that would actually lower they impact of this kind of abuse what we have here is not just a question of sexual abuse and this something that we have to remind ourselves gunston doing what we have here in our hands is actually a long long history of a major cover up that is running across a very very large institution so the question here is not just where the church can reform itself and rid itself of sexual abuse no institution can this is something that we see across the board in all human activities the question that we have to ask is were the church actually making the right efforts in order to prevent these things actually being protected when it's what's right. thank you so much john you're welcome. time now for some of the other stories making news around the world
